The Huntsman of Brockenhurst | Best places to stay in the New Forest

"The Huntsman is a fantastic example of how to regenerate an old-fashioned pub; the revamped bar oozes an almost urban style, with metalwork booths and reclaimed parquet flooring. The thirteen rooms – all different – keep to the contemporary vibe with statement mirrors, bold wallpapers and small hits of green – on the furnishings, in paintings, as plants – to maintain a subtle forest theme. Loved by both locals and tourists, in summer, the garden is warmed by fire-pits in the evening, while diners tuck into pizzas, steaks and good veggie options. The Huntsman is ideally situated on the outskirts of Brockenhurst, right in the heart of the Forest. The village is the forest’s central hub – the perfect base to visit nearby attractions, or for exploring by bike, on horseback and on foot. For those looking for a cosy, homely stay in the Forest, there’s no better option. " - Annabelle Thorpe

We booked a family room for 3 nights as we were attending a wedding nearby. We were so impressed with our stay. The family room was perfect for our needs. The sleeping areas are comprised of 2 separate spaces and also has a spacious bathroom with shower and separate bath. The rooms had complimentary tea , coffee and a little welcome treat of flapjacks. We stayed Thursday to Sunday and had no issue with noise from the bar. The breakfast was delicious with a mixture of self serve items and ordering from menu. We ate one evening meal in the restaurant and it did not disappoint. The staff were helpful and friendly. We would happily book to stay in this hotel again.

This pub feels like it has been recently renovated, and to a high quality. The interior is comfortable and classy, while there is also a beer garden which includes an outdoor bar and burger shack (presumably for weekends/summertime enjoyment). The new menu is good, offers a decent range. Unfortunately this did lead to a misunderstanding regarding my meal - I got served a ham sandwich instead of the ham, hash and poached egg I wanted. The staff were apologetic and resolved the issue, but it meant I was waiting about 45 mins for my food, all together. I understand that these things happen, of course, but instead of comping my meal (or charging me the lower price of the sandwich) the waiter half-heartedly offered to take the price off, and I am far too polite to demand it. It is good customer service to just take it off the bill automatically, especially when the pub was so quiet, so there was really not much excuse for the mix up. Fortunately, the two pints of ale I was drinking put me in a good mood - I was on 'Forty-Niner', which was really very tasty, and the perfect temperature (just slightly cool). One of my favourite new beers in a long time.

My partner and I had a lovely 2 night stay at The Huntsman. The rooms being on a courtyard was a lovely surprise and meant you had your own front door. The rooms themselves were lovely and comfortable. We had a nice meal in the pub on one of the nights and the breakfast was also pretty good. I dropped a star for two reasons: (i) although the room was on the whole extremely clean, I felt the floor had not been properly cleaned; (ii) being wheat and dairy intolerant and therefore unable to eat a lot of the breakfast offering, I felt that the fruit offering could have been a lot better.

We came in for a roast yesterday evening, after hearing really good things from our clients. The roast overall was just okay? 7/10 at most. The sides at £5 each were incredibly underwhelming. The cauliflower cheese had hardly any flavour, or colouring to it, it needs another cheese added, some mustard, more seasoning, and the pigs in duvets, were three of the thinnest slices of half of a sausage I've ever seen. The yorkie was lovely, as were the roast potatoes, but we couldn't help leaving slightly disappointed. My partner had the veggie parcel, and it was a big strange, a pile of mushrooms dumped on top of the roast with a pastry top? it wasn't an encased parcel, and we couldn't really find any feta either. We were also coming to try out the Sunday roast, as we were looking at the huntsman being a potential for Christmas day, but sadly its a no from us. We would return if we were in the area, but just for a casual Sunday roast, nothing special.

Well what a lovely place. Staff friendly and welcoming. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Nicely decorated place. Was very busy. Reasonably priced. Had cocktails which were good. We had food, I ordered Crab burger which for me didn't work but did try. My partner had a burger which he said was good. This is situated in Brockenhurst on the main road between Lyndhurst and Lymington. Definitely would recommend and go again

Really lovely, had no idea that the rooms would be out the back in like an old stable block, had its own garden courtyard, really beautiful and special. Its its unique selling point and think that should be shouted about more. The room was lovely, very clean, lots of nice touches. Cant wait to go back in the summer months, as will make more use of the courtyard garden.

Fabulous 2 night stay at The Huntsman. Newly refurbished room, which was very cosy. Tasty breakfast. Great location, perfect for Forrest walks and even a trip to the Isle of White, which we did! Friendly and helpful staff, they kindly helped us with the trains and ferry as we were a little unsure. We'll be back.

Came here with family whilst staying in Brockenhurst. The staff were very friendly from when we arrived. Got us water for the table without us having to ask. When food was coming out our server went past a couple of times and looked to make sure all had arrived. He noticed 2 were not with the others and was going to chase as the remaining dishes came. The service was quick smooth and we were not rushed at any point. Our server Joshua was great through the whole night. Highly recommend coming here. Will hopefully return before going back home. At busy times would recommend booking so as to avoid disappointment. At the end of our holiday we decided to come here for breakfast. Didn't disappoint. Would highly recommend coming for any meal time they are open. Staff all friendly and helped book when they website messed up.
