A Rockport, Massachusetts Food Crawl | Eater Boston

"A cute spot with a Back Harbor view that serves American-style ice cream; it’s ideal for a traditional single-scoop sugar cone (mint chocolate chip is a highlighted flavor) while strolling the waterfront." - Terrence Doyle

Google
What a cute spot! Nice staff, came by earlier in the day and it was a line out the door. So at the end of the day we saw no line! They were out of a few items my wife wanted but the good options were plentiful! I got a chocolate peanut butter was yummy! Nice place to take some pics and selfies!

Emily T.

Google
It’s a cute little spot with a long line out front — lots of kids waiting excitedly by the door. Plenty of ice cream flavors and the staff was super nice. The taste was alright, but I was expecting something a bit richer and creamier.

Brian H.

Google
Might be the cutest ice cream shop on Cape Ann. Near the beginning of Bearskin Neck. Small building with 3 or 4 cafe tables that look into the ocean as well as a small outdoor seating area with 5 or 6 café tables with the same view. Lots of choices for delicious ice cream too...

Samantha R.

Google
The most expensive ice cream I’ve ever bought and yet… the ice cream flavour was so bland (butter pecan) may as well have been the cheapest supermarket vanilla you could find. The tiny cone was overwhelmed with ice cream, to the point it was impossible to eat as it was melting horrendously. I threw it away, an incredible waste when you consider how ridiculously expensive this ice cream was. Staff couldn’t even provide any level of friendly service either. Would never get again or recommend.

Google
Heard that this was a place full of good ice in the Rockport area, so I had to stop by and try it. First impression: the line was incredibly organized and not clumped, which is perfect! Though the customer service was not what I was hoping for. When I politely asked to try their Purple Cow Shake, the person at the counter got confused and spewed attitude towards me, which was something I was not pleased with especially since it was my first time visiting. After a couple of clarifications, I was able to get my order and leave. Trying the shake; it was just okay! The first couple of sips were perfect, rich and creamy, fluffy and cold, sip by sip! But as soon as I reached the end, it then started to lose that blackberry and marshmallow flavor, and then became icy and bland. Moving towards the ice cream, they look good, but portions can be oversized! There are a variety of flavors to choose from and good healthy alternatives. Overall, not sure if I’d come back, for I don’t know what the hype of this place is about. Don’t get me wrong, great selections, cute little shack, beautiful aesthetics. But things that could’ve been better are the quality of ice cream and frappes/shakes, and customer service. This place does have potential to keep improving though, so I’m not mad in the slightest bit. Keep it up 👌

Google
A cracking little spot with a big choice of flavors. We enjoyed our ice creams at about 5pm on a Monday and the place was quiet. The views are amazing and sitting with the water splashing against the window was a nice way to finish a few days in Cape Ann

Stella S.

Google
Tasty ice-cream and lots of options! 2 stars because the staff could be more polite and professional. They gave cut responses, no greeting/thank you, no smile, they did not look like they wanted to be there and serve customers. Maybe it was a long Sunday for them but this attitude ruins the client experience.

Google
All the ice cream here is that in which you could expect if you've visited a roadside ice cream place in New England. My ice cream was great, though strangely there was a hunk of ice in it. There were a couple of young girls here working hard. They were moving the line and accommodating customer requests with good attitudes. It's small and cramped and they made it work. Good to see. That said, it's a small place. Eating options inside are limited. The view from inside out over the water is incredible. We took our ice creams away and chose to walk down the street that's lined with shops and galleries.
google avatar

Yelp
Wide variety of ice cream options. We tried the NY cheesecake, and it was not very good. We got a waffle cone with chocolate and the special which was a cookie dough honey graham cracker mix (delicious!!) service was good, we got a few samples! Never have I ever paid $10 for a kiddie (2 scoop) ice cream cone until Rockport. Be sure to walk up the hill and check out the view! There's also a nice view within and outside the store.

Yelp
This definitely was the perfect stop on my day trip to Rockport! Walking down the streets of Bearskin you'll find this gem. Amazing ice cream, warm welcome from staff as soon as you walk in, the views are stunning. The most relaxing ice cream date you'll ever go on!!!
google avatar

Himani M.

Yelp
The perfect ice cream in the most beautiful place! The Ice Cream Store was a must-experience in Rockport so naturally I had to get one. My Icicle Mint Chip was creamy, minty perfection! I couldn't ask for more as I sat in the shop looking out the big windows towards the ocean harbor. I also managed to get a quick pic outside the door, and, damn, this ice cream sure does photograph well ;)
google avatar

Alana S.

Yelp
I got a lemon sherbet mixed with the lemonade and it was SO GOOD it's called the summer breeze and it was so refreshing and not too creamy but enough to be satisfied. Service was quick even though only one person was working and she was very nice.
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
Rich, creamy ice cream, perfect for a hot day in Rockport!! I sampled the cookie dough ice cream, and was pleasantly surprised with the soft texture, and the (large) amount of cookie dough in it!! The store itself is SMALL, plan to be cramped inside while ordering (limited seating too).

R B.

Yelp
the staff is much nicer than the guy at rockin cupcakes up the road this place here has a nice view and their cones are NOT stale like the aforementioned place enjoy
google avatar

Fatboy S.

Yelp
A strong 4 stars for this ice cream spot. Tiny shop that serves up some great ice cream. Service was good. Just wish they offered up some more toppings.
google avatar

kristin c.

Yelp
Surprised that a small, which said kiddie, had at least 3 scoops so at less than $6, it was great. A large sundae, with fudge, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry at just about $9, is the better deal. Pick at least 3 flavors and find someone to share with bec it was huge. A lot of fudge but was thick enough that we just pushed it aside. Can't miss the cute house with usually a long line outside. Has a little indoor seating area but felt warm in the afternoon so outdoors was better, views of the water.

Diane G.

Yelp
A great place for ice cream! Plenty of flavors, and you can get 2 flavors in one kiddie scoop! (The kiddie scoop costs $6.25, but it's well worth it.) Don't miss this little place!
google avatar

Yelp
What a cute little shop! Tiny and well-positioned right on the water along the popular Bearskin Neck. We went after dinner on a holiday weekend and the line was LONG. Like really long. But the two young women in there were hustling hard to keep it moving and get everyone what they wanted. I got a small Moose Tracks on a cake cone. It was exactly as I hoped and was the perfect treat to enjoy while strolling through beautiful Rockport. I think the location is what really makes this place great!

S G.

Yelp
I took a low cal frozen yogurt . it had absolutely not taste whatsoever. Needless to say, I won't be back
google avatar

Adam F.

Yelp
Very easy for this place to skip quality based on location, but it's tasty and they have a ton of interesting flavors. But tiny.
google avatar

Victoria T.

Yelp
The cutest ice cream place! It's so small. I got a strawberry cheesecake kiddie sized cone. They have a ton of different flavors. I thought it was a little expensive, at ~$6, but the ice cream was pretty good.
google avatar

Adina S.

Yelp
The Ice Cream Store is a cute little shop on the main road leading to the beach. They had a bunch of flavors and the quality was great! Easy to grab lunch/dinner nearby and then dessert.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
This place does not need a Yelp page because within a few minutes of walking along Bearskin Neck your attention will be exclusively drawn to The Ice Cream Store. It is the CUTEST little building with (probably) a long queue waiting outside. They have a very large menu board by the door so you can deliberate which flavor to choose while you wait. There are at least fifteen flavors. Mint chocolate chip is my tried and true but I am a WHORE for cookie monster and I incorrectly assumed "cookie monster's cookie dough" was the blue filled-with-oreos-and-cookie-dough delight we all know and love but it is not. It just cookie dough. I suggest they change the name to avoid such confusion in the future. I'm reading one of the reviews on the side here and what started as a chuckle to see one reviewer commenting on the fact that "one scoop" here refers to four scoops has turned into horror to find out you can get more than one flavor in a "scoop"? WHAT?! That is NOT intuitive and should have been mentioned somewhere! This is especially savage as the war and peace length of their ice cream flavors menu has so many delicious varieties on there that it's torture choosing just one. Once you have obtained your cone or cup, you can then choose to sit inside, with a beautiful view of the bay and neighboring beach OR you can sit in one of their outdoor seats with the same beautiful view. If you haven't been, you will feel compelled to go to this place as soon as you walk by.

Christine M.

Yelp
What a waste of money! I spent $6.50 on a small cone and didn't even get a full scoop of ice cream! I will never go back there again.
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
$4 for one scoop?! I almost turned away once I saw the price, but it was hot that day with some major ice cream cravings. So happy I didn't turn around because one scoop really means like 2+ scoops! I got the mint chocolate chip flavor and it was so refreshing and there was a sitting area inside and outside with a nice view of the water!
google avatar

Ren R.

Yelp
Cute quaint little place to get ice cream! I got the rockport pistachio ice cream and it's really good! The pistachios mixed in with the ice cream were crunchy and added a nice texture. There are not many seats inside the store but there is also an outside place to sit. Great view of the ocean! One thing: the one scoop ice cream was HUGE (refer to picture!) i was really surprised by how much they give for one scoop of ice cream and was happy I didn't get two or three scoops because I have no idea how I would finish that.
google avatar

Steph M.

Yelp
This place is so cute! It's a tiny shack that had 3 people working it. Only recommendation is do not get strawberry. It tasted so artificial.
google avatar

Laurie H.

Yelp
Good ice cream with a nice flavor list. Super small so I bet it gets pretty tight in here in high season...but it was the week after Labor Day so no line at all. Teen boy and I each got a small cup and it was plenty of ice cream - no complaints on the price.
google avatar

Eugene W.

Yelp
Nice little ice cream store. There were no other customers when we arrived. We got the black raspberry and cookie dough. Cookie dough was standard, tasty and what you would expect. Black raspberry was SO good!!! You have to get the black raspberry when you come here- it will blow your mind. Prices are a bit high, but it's worth it if you get the black raspberry (maybe there are other flavors that are just as good... we'll be back to find out).
google avatar

Jiachen J.

Yelp
Balked at the prices at first -$4 for one scoop??!? Then watched in silence as it turned out one scoop actually meant four scoops (yes you can get multiple flavors in one scoop!). Very generous with the sprinkles. The only ice cream place I saw with homemade ice cream in Rockport. Only complaint is that the ice cream was very melty.
google avatar

Judy C.

Yelp
While wandering around Rockport, we found this super cute ice-cream store off the side of the road. It's a little cottage with a sign out front listing a ton of interesting flavors. The girl behind the counter was really nice and let me try a bunch of flavors - maple walnut, pistachio, mint chocolate chip and low tide. They were all excellent, but the low tide really stood out! It's a combination of coffee ice cream, oreos, graham crust, and one other thing. It was delicious! Even though I ordered a single scoop, you actually get 2 scoops, which was perfect so you can mix and match. My bf got the chocolate peanut butter truffle, which was very rich but oh so delicious. I'm glad we got there when we did because a line started forming soon after we arrived!
google avatar

Rashid M.

Yelp
Free Ice-Cream!!! That's right! Was browsing around the neighborhood when me and my friends happen to stumble upon this little ice-cream shop. There was a huge sign up front saying "All Ice-Cream Free". I thought "yeah whatever, there's gotta be a catch", thinking that I might have to pay for the cone or the only free ice cream would be some strange flavor. But, lo and behold, everything was free because they were closing down for the season. Now I'm thinking "ok, she'll probably hand me a tiny little spoon". Nope, I was so wrong. She made me a huge sundae with 3 scoops of ice-cream, nuts and cherries. It was free and it was awesome!
google avatar

Kimberly A Z.

Yelp
Super cute ice cream shop. Small inside with a few tables. A couple benches outside. I got the "surprise" flavor.. it was graham cracker ice cream with marshmallow and chocolate chunks... S'mores favor! Seriously delicious but I'm glad I got a small because my waistline grew an inch after eating this.
google avatar

Bhumi P.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot to grab ice cream in Rockport! The woman at the counter was very pleasant, and they had a bunch of delicious flavors to choose from. We got kiddie sizes (super generous portions) of the rockport pistachio and winter solstice peppermint. My favorite part was the seating area with the view - usually all the views are taken up by restaurants and hotels, so this was a nice surprise! I would definitely visit again.
google avatar

Amelie S.

Yelp
good and fast service with no line. both i've creams were a little soft/melted but nothing too bad. my friend got the peppermint really liked it but he said it wasn't a very strong flavor. mine was really good with not too many frozen yogurt chunks, it had really good flavor. i definitely recommend stoping by this ice cream place. they've got so much variety!
google avatar

Jocy C.

Yelp
If you're in Cape Ann, you must go to the Ice Cream store and take a stroll down Bearskin Neck. Lots of little shops and stores. One place that you MUST go to on a HOT day is the Ice Cream store. I loved their Root Beer float and their Ice Cream Sundae.
google avatar

Betsy P.

Yelp
ok, this is the BEST!!! and cutest ice cream shop I've e er seen.. right on water in BearSkin Neck Rockport
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Really nice day in Rockport with galleries, food and naturally some ice cream. We ordered raspberry and peanut butter chocolate. Both were good and had a slight hint of peppermint ice cream. It was interesting but still good. Enjoy!!!
google avatar

Audrey K.

Yelp
So, I've only tried this place once - but the pistachio ice cream is so good, and so pistachio-y, and so green. The waffle cones are cheap and the store itself is adorable. There were a few other places for ice cream, not sure if they were as yummy? Shrugs!
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Long lines when we got there. Ice cream is delicious. Some of the flavors were unfamiliar. They weren't explained on the sign, but the employees were more than happy to explain. Great way to top off a long day.
google avatar

Katie O.

Yelp
Great!! Love the late hours & numerous flavor choices! Waffle cone is awesome. Fudge tastes homemade (maybe it is?). Ice cream is good. My fav was the Heath Bar Crunch. My husband liked the cookie dough. The family also liked the salty caramel pretzel (needs more pretzels!), pistachio, vanilla, and black raspberry. The cute shop, friendly staff, and great hours (open late!) make this place a winner!!
google avatar

An L.

Yelp
My friends liked this place very much. Maybe I'm in a mode for frozen yogurt (my last 3 desserts have been frozen yogurt), that the switch to a trial of ice cream was kind of too heavy for my liking (like the 2% to skim milk switch). Of the flavours tried: low tide, peppermint, black raspberry, cookies and cream, my favourite was probably black raspberry.

Spencer C.

Yelp
Cutest spot you'll ever find ice cream. Great couple of tables and chairs tucked away overlooking the harbor. Peanut butter chocolate truffle ice cream is very quality too.
google avatar

Allie L.

Yelp
In my opinion, this is the best ice cream store in town. And I've been to all of them. It's not much too look at. Just a tiny little shop next to the water. But the ice cream is fantastic! It's rich and creamy and handmade in a dairy called Puritan Dairy in Rosendale, MA. I've never been a fan of peppermint ice cream but that dairy even does that right. Their Winter Solstice Peppermint is delicious. It's usually really hot in the store and cramped so I recommend sitting on the benches outside which overlooks a little private beach. Edit: So I try never to update my reviews three times but I had to make an exception for this. The owner contacted me after my last review where I said that I didn't like their smoothies. He said that they'd gotten new better flavorings in. So I went in and investigated. I ordered a strawberry smoothie again and tried it. And it still tasted lousy. All of their smoothies flavors are still artificial which would normally be ok but they put so much milk and water in mine that it barely had any flavor. So the Ice Cream Store still has my endorsement as best ice cream in town but I'd skip the smoothies.

Yelp
4.5 Excellent find, thanks to Yelpers! Out of all the choices in this little town, we ended up here. Glad we did. This was the best rum raisin ice cream I have ever had. I used to hate this flavor but for some strange reason I love it now. Have tried many the past year and this was the one with the most perfectly balanced flavors of rum, sugar, cream and the plumpest raisins. Texture seemed nice and creamy too but then again it was a killer 95 degree day, so couldn't tell too well with the fast melting. Would definitely return if ever in Rockport again.
google avatar

Lesley A.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for ice cream in Rockport, hands down. It's better than the Dairy Train (sorry, Richardson's Ice cream! I love you so much, but not as much as the magical ice cream that The Ice Cream Store has.) I have trouble deviating from chocolate chip with chocolate sprinkles. That is my staple flavor. And it is so freakin good at this place that it's even harder for me to try something new here! But I have tried other flavors before, and this ice cream is just amazing. It's got that really great 'stretchy' texture that only the best homemade ice creams have. It's flavorful without tasting artificial or sicky sweet. If you order a flavor like chocolate chip or something with nuts and other things in it, it's always generously distributed throughout the ice cream. The staff is friendly. Don't be pulled in by the first ice cream place you see! Keep walking and go to this one and you won't regret it!
google avatar

Val W.

Yelp
Really disappointing. I thought, based on such high Yelp reviews, this place would be something special. Instead it was a tiny shop with ice cream no better than the mid-priced gallons you'd buy at the grocery store. They did give samples, but didn't even have all of the flavors they were advertising. I got the salted caramel pretzel, which did have mini pretzels in it (which was awesome), but I was expected salted caramel ice cream - not the vanilla ice cream with streaks of caramel and pretzel that I got. It wasn't bad, but like I said, absolutely nothing special. Given the adorable local feel of this area, I would love to see some local, homeade ice cream.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Awesome. Great ice cream. Perfect location. Very good ice cream. I ordered winter solstice peppermint with chocolate chip. My wife ordered her icicle mint chocolate. All flavors were delicious. I'm posting a shout of the flavor menu as well.
google avatar

Kirsten H.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot right in downtown Rockport on the water. They have a ton of flavors both unique and usual and a few spots to sit inside if it's a rainy day. Definitely my go to spot in Rockport for ice cream
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
Good ice cream, cute location, great views. Prices are reasonable ($3-$5) and portions are large. Eat your ice cream here, or take it for a walk on the small beach right behind the store or down Bear Skin Neck. Cash only.
google avatar

JR W.

Yelp
Chocolate carmel turtle sprite float YUM. It's a cute standalone ice cream shop with a pretty decent menu.
google avatar

Dave L.

Yelp
Great little Ice cream shop. I'm the water front with a great veiw. I enjoyed getting ice cream. They had a nice selection of ice cream and very very friendly Service. I reccomnd coming here.

Jessica S.

Yelp
The girls who work here are awesome! I'm allergic to soy and they took the time to read the ingredients on every flavor to make sure I picked a soy-free flavor. The ice cream was really good, it's on the water and reasonably priced!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Just superb service and product here. Should be no surprise. Exceptional flavors and just wonderful personalities with the workers.

Robert S.

Yelp
Walked in on a whim, and what a lucky whim! We were graciously welcomed by Jed, the owner, who let our group of 5 samples flavor after flavor. We ordered (receiving the "carried away kiddie" size) and, on Jed's advice, sat on the bench outside in a sunny spot next to the store. Ice cream was top notch. Creamy, but didn't melt too quickly. Had the salty caramel pretzel which I'd highly recommend. Others had the mint chip, Low Tide, and cake batter which they loved. And the best part? Sprinkles were FREE!!!!!!!!!! There's a handful of ice cream stores in Rockport, but this really was THE ice cream store.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Plenty of great homemade ice cream flavors - Low Tide is particularly brilliant, like a glorified mocha almond fudge. Portions are meant to share. Cute shoppe, friendly staff.

Cindi K.

Yelp
So yummy!! The raspberry, rum raisin and pistachio are all delicious. We ending up getting a second cone before we left rockport!
