"St. Mawes is one of Cornwall’s prettiest harbor villages, and The Idle Rocks has a grandstand view of the bay from the glistening waterfront. This relaxed but luxurious Relais & Chateaux is simply elegant, and exclusive enough that you’ll need to book well in advance. The hotel has 19 bright and airy bedrooms, most with a sea view, each subtly different and designed with utmost attention to detail—from perfect cotton sheets to fresh flowers in vases and televisions set in mirrors. The walls are lifted by local artwork, and colorful bedspreads and upholstered armchairs bring added charm. Bathrooms have lavender-scented Aromatherapy Associates products, some with standalone tubs. Downstairs, there’s a terrace for cocktails and dinner throughout the summer, while a fire crackles in the lounge in colder months. "On the quayside in the traditional fishing village of St Mawes, the Idle Rocks Hotel boasts excellent sea views and fresh seafood. It offers modern rooms and free Wi-Fi. All individually decorated rooms at Idle Rocks feature a flat-screen TV, vintage radio, Cornish tea, a Nespresso coffee maker and a bathroom with a bath or shower, and some with a rain-effect shower. Some rooms have views of the harbour and St Anthony’s Head. Some TVs also double as mirrors. Food is sourced locally and the head chef is also a keen forager. "When Aston Martin supremo David Richards and his hands-on wife Karen took over this prime seafront hotel in idyllic St. Mawes, they didn’t hold back. Out went the fusty English-hotel décor; in came a bright, nautically themed look with hints of St. Tropez and Scandinavia. Chilled music, cheerful Chino-clad staff and colourful Cornish artworks are set against white walls, sea-grass carpets and the azure waters of the Fal estuary. A long sea-facing ground floor segues seamlessly from snug fireside cosy to laidback lounge to moodily lit bar and white-napery dining room. French doors lead to the hotel’s trump card: a gorgeous terrace lapped by the tides. Upstairs are 15 chic bedrooms – all bar four face the sea, the remainder the village – with artful seashells and disguised flatscreens, free-standing tubs or monsoon showers; plus four more cottagey, tranquil harbour-facing rooms in an annex alongside.We arrived on a flawless, magnolia-strewn April day – the kind when Cornwall seems the most beautiful slice of land on earth – just 2 days after it re-opened.
