The Best Wine Bars in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"The Independent Caveau is as cool as a wine bar gets, a storage unit-like building off the beaten path in Mid City. Husband and wife team Jim Yonkus and Joanne Close handpick a wide-ranging selection of old-world and cutting-edge winemakers, offering a collection so vast it requires an old-school library ladder to access. The pair’s use of wallpaper and color helps close in the high ceilings, creating a cozy nook for a bar at the end of the space where customers can enjoy a bottle and specialty meats and cheeses." - Clair Lorell

I took the WSET Level 2 in-person course at the Independent Caveau NOLA and was extremely pleased with the management, level of teaching, and the overall result. The Independent Caveau has three functions: wine school, wine shop and wine bar. It's a great atmosphere and the teaching facilities are good. The teachers were communicative, available, and knowledgeable in their respective subjects. This was a four-week class, so the volume of information was intense. But it was taught in a logical and approachable manner. Importantly, I've surveyed wine schools in the US (and France) and the Independent Caveau was the most affordable school I found. I am considering taking Level 3 there.

Came in with my boyfriend to enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese board and we had so much fun! Brittany and Biz were super friendly and knowledgeable! Loved the cheeseboard they paired with our wine and the vibes were just amazing all around! :)

I went for a WSET course. Great little place. Awesome wines.

Google
Great wine and meat/cheese selection! I think we were helped by the owners, who were friendly, patient, and had some great recommendations. There was quite a variety of wine to pick from, and I appreciated that they had bottle options at many different price points. Everything we had was delicious! Have a snack and a drink at the bar if you have time.

Very welcoming, great selection and cozy little bar in the back. Joanne might be the most knowledgeable proprietor in town and Jim knows his stuff too. Plenty of tastings, classes, and get togethers.

Unrelenting assault of coolness and oozing with vibes that I can't even find in my own Atlanta backyard. Knowledgeable and excited humans up front and a cheesemonger whose case looks like the cover of a magazine. Sherry selection made me go a bit goofy. GO HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT GOOD THINGS TO DRINK

Google
This is my happy place. Jim and Joanne are just the best and have incredible knowledge of all of their carefully curated products, but with zero pretension or hard sell. Upon entering the modern building is the retail section with some of the finest wines, artisan food products and a selection of cured meats and cheeses that is unmatched in the area. Those wines can move further back into the bar area for a small corkage and delicious cheese/meat boards can join. There are typically by the glass pours each day until closing. Any of the bar options can go with you outside to the pleasant backyard. Informative and fun wine classes are taught upstairs in the same unpretentious manner. Do yourself a favor and go immediately. You will become a regular.

Google
One of the best wine purveyors in our region, perhaps No. America. Selection of cheese and charcuterie are equally high quality and Jim is super knowledgeable about all of it. They serve by the glass, or bottles with small ($10) cork fee from retail at the indoor bar (pictured) or outside in a spacious and comfortable stone garden. Don't let the out of the way address fool you, this is the best wine bar in New Orleans. Jim's wife, Joann also runs classes on wine at many levels. Don't miss the Independent if you care about good wine.

Yelp
New Zion, Mid City Broadmoor, not sure what to call this budding little area yet, but The Independent Caveau is sure to be an anchor for the growing neighborhood. Located in what I think of as the bermuda triangle connecting broadmoor to central city, this wine bar and shop is everything the area has been missing. A laid back, but sophisticated social gathering spot, for the wine and cheese enthusiast. It's close enough to everything but off the beaten path enough to feel special. We stopped in on a Thursday at opening time to try ALL the wines and a sampling of cheese & charcouterie. The menu wines were an obviously well cultivated selection of sparkling, whites, rosè and reds by the half and full glass or bottle. Super unique flavors that I just haven't had before. The retail shop in the front isn't open for business quite yet but it should be soon. Plenty of room for a grand selection of wines plus a equally well curated offering of cheese and meats. Inside is cozy and stylish. Outside there's an expansive deck, and small gravel yard. Excited for cooler weather!

Yelp
My girlfriend and I loved this place!! Brittany and Bis were really great bartenders. We had a delicious cheese board (picked out by Jim) that really complimented our wine. It's a very welcoming atmosphere and a great place for a date night!

Yelp
Since we've been locked in our house we have ordered from Jim at The Independent Caveau a couple times with great success. Our first order was the "wine box" which is a mixed case curated by Jim and his team. It was a great introduction to both The Independent Caveau and some wines from around the world we never would have found on our own. Since we had such a great experience we've ordered again. You really do get a tailored experience based on your preferences and budget. We went with a whites and rosés theme this time in preparation for the summer heat. Currently, delivery is available and has been prompt and contactless. Jim is always a pleasure on the phone, ensuring he has captured our needs. Hopefully we will be able to visit in person soon to get the full experience.

Yelp
We've ordered a couple of the boxes of wine from Independent Caveau and absolutely loved them! We've gotten some new favorite wines, that we had never even heard of, much less tried! I also may have found a new favorite champagne called Effervescence that they picked out! They've got wines from all around the world, so this is NOT the wine shop that's got the same selections you can find anywhere. We FINALLY got around to visiting in person and it was just fantastic! Daily selections of wine by the glass or bottle + daily selections of cheese ! They are a little off the beaten path but parking has been easy and especially now, I want to go to a place with plenty of space! They are doing an awesome job spacing, restricting the number of guests inside the retail space and wearing masks. Jim, the owner is not only awesome but a genuinely nice guy! I really cannot recommend the Independent Caveau enough!

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing! This little tucked away hidden gem is a must. The ambiance is beautiful and simple. Staff is super kind and helpful with suggestions. If you are looking for wines your can't find elsewhere or a cute place for a date or just to grab a glass (or two, or three) this is perfect! Alexis is an absolute sweetheart.

Yelp
I really like this place. Interesting bar selections offered by glass and 1/2 glass, seems to change every 7-10 days. Limited but nice beer/cider selection. Excellent cheese, charcuterie, and other wine friendly snacks. Great music, 80's/90's college radio fare with good downtempo trip-hop mix, and some other nice eclectic selections thrown in. My only complaint is the complete lack of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey, but that's not a very fare critique, but it would make it an almost perfect bar then. ;-)

Yelp
What a wonderful place. So many different wines to choose from! Pair your selection with an amazing cheese plate! Off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.
