The Independent Opens in Georgetown, South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Opened February 14 at 615 Front Street as part of the forthcoming waterfront hotel the George, this Indigo Road Hospitality Group restaurant is intended to be a community 'connecting place'—a local gathering spot similar to a town hall. Executive chef Thomas Vance (formerly of Little Mama’s in Charlotte) leads a seasonal menu that celebrates Lowcountry flavors and the bounty of the sea, with an emphasis on sourcing from nearby producers such as Blue Truck Organics, Tiny Victory Farms, A&W Honey, Reed’s Greens, and Harrelson’s Seafood Market. Standout dishes include a blackened flounder topped with lump crab and andouille perloo, she-crab soup, fried chicken livers (recommended by the chef), grilled oysters, and seafood towers. The handsome interiors were designed by Charleston-based Jenny Keenan. Current service hours are Sunday, Monday, and Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m." - Erin Perkins

What a great experience at The Independent. Natasha was our server and no exaggeration she was one of the best servers I’ve ever had. The food was amazing—definitely recommend the deviled eggs, Parmesan fries, and Brussel sprouts. Our group had steaks, crab cakes, and shrimp and grits. Portions were perfect. The vibe was unmatched. From Jenn to Hunter to the gals running food/water and all the other staff we had an incredible dinner. Ended up outside at Eliza’s for some live music and a night cap. Highly recommend adding The George to your stop in Georgetown.

Google
Had an extremely nice Saturday Night dining experience here. The atmosphere was excellent, the staff were all professionals, and the food was superb. One of the better overall experiences I've had in a while, really enjoyed being able to have nice conversation with the people I was with.. without having to shout, or ask people to repeat the entire time! Our server was great and she had wonderful recommendations as well.

Google
Dined at the Independent during an overnight stay at The George. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the drinks and conversation with the bartender. The food was slow to arrive but the customer service more than made up for it. The crab dip was tasty, but as a Marylander, I was looking for more crab. The flat iron steak was flavorful, and came sliced for a tender bite. Really enjoyed both the hotel, outside bar area and the Independent and would come again.

Google
We had a nice meal at this fairly new hotel restaurant. They have done a nice job with both the hotel and restaurant. Service was excellent. The food was nice and well presented. The shrimp are the best deal on the menu- we did not care for the pickled strawberries!

Google
Everything from the atmosphere, to the servers (Natasha and Hunter were both AWESOME!!), to the food, was fantastic! My husband’s Pork Chop and my Ribeye were both perfectly cooked. The deserts were amazing! We enjoyed dinner so much, that we went back the next morning for Brunch! Once again, the food was amazing! My Shrimp & Grits and my husband’s Smashburger with a fried egg were FANTASTIC!

Google
Truly a fantastic experience from start to finish for a family birthday dinner. Service was impeccable and our server knew her menu very well, steering and guiding us in the right direction for entree choices. We showed up with ideas for appetizers and weren't disappointed in either the cornbread with the honey butter (so soft and with just the right amount of sweet) or the mussels, which were some of the best I have had. Our server also brought us the Fried Blue Crab Fingers and the remoulade with them was absolutely spot on. Our entrees were the scallops which are a slightly smaller portion, but delectable. Next was the Flat Iron, perfectly cooked at medium temperature for our taste. The Shrimp and Grits were a backup choice for one of us, but our server again cued us here, letting us know it was one of her favorite dishes and others as well. They were light and fluffy and packed with flavor. Lastly, the Red Drum was a highlight as well, having replaced the Flounder. Dessert was Mile High Key Lime Pie, home made vanilla ice cream and a newer dessert for fall with apple, cinnamon and vanilla ice cream that was like fall in your mouth! Oh and even the espresso was really delicious and I am saying this after having just gotten back from Italy 2 weeks ago. It is a little loud in the restaurant, but not nearly as bad as some other reviews made it out to be, though it was only about 2/3 full that evening since we were an earlier seating. You can make a really fun evening out of the experience though for sure and don't forget the outdoor bar at the back of the hotel, esp. about sunset!

Google
My experience at the Independent was not pleasant. It was very loud and the tables were so close that every time someone walked by, I was hit by their bum. I moved my chair as close to my friend as possible to a void this. The food was not good. I had a Caesar salad with shrimp. The 6 small shrimp completely covered the over grilled romaine. They were out of three dishes and had no specials. I had ordered a cup of coffee which did not come until after another person at the table asked the server. At that point we were ready to go. Not a good experience. I will not go back. I recommend Frank’s.

Google
This restaurant is attached to Georgetown Hotel and our first night after travel was perfect! We ordered Crab Fingers, Blackened Swordfish with mashed potatoes and blue crab and the fish special; whole Red Fish! Our server Hunter did a great job!

Yelp
We have been here a few times and it never disappoints! Their staff is amazing and so much fun. It's a great place for dinner with friends because while nice and cozy, it doesn't feel like you are in a library. The food is great, more great choices on their specials than I can eat in one night. Good problem to have! Love this place!!

Yelp
Let's start with the one negative! I called (twice) and left messages to reserve 2 seats at the bar for 6pm 48 hours prior to visiting. When we arrived told you can't reserve seats at the bar. It would've been nice if I received a call advising me. Common curiosity? SERVICE: Frankie, our bartender made excellent drinks (3 mixed one glass of wine) and provided great service. She knew the menu and was very helpful. 5 stars FOOD I had the fruit salad! Outstanding! Wife had the she crab soup. Loaded with crab meat. Could've been warmer but delicious! Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly and delicious. Mashed potatoes were like silk. Wife had blackened shrimp and rice. Special coffees and cake for dessert. Over all a great atmosphere runners delivering food. Very attentive. The menu is limited plus several specials offered. Total dinner with tip $250.00

Yelp
Ambiance is delightful. Service is excellent. Food is amazing. My mother and I came up again this year from Charleston to spend the night at The George and have Thanksgiving dinner at The Independent. It was much busier this year than last year. We made our reservation at six o'clock, thinking that was early. But they began serving at noon, so were running low on food. The portions were a lot smaller this year, and they had completely run out of the chocolate pecan bourbon pie. Our waiter Zeke was excellent. We shall come earlier next year!

Yelp
Everything was absolutely amazing! Start to finish and what a great addition to the Georgetown restaurant community. I throughly enjoyed my experience there and would absolutely recommend and cannot wait to go back

Yelp
2/5 star Caesar salad Tomatos add too much acidity, croutons of fried cheese are great as well as the Parmesan, however the salad had too little dressing and was served in a way where you had to cut it yourself. This only stands to benefit the enjoyer in terms of a mix of lettuce maturity. Overall a poor salad, but great restaurant experience!

Yelp
Awesome food, great service. Had the filet mignon. Was cooked perfectly, excellent taste. Also had creamed corn, mashed potatoes, crab fingers and crab dip. Everything was great! Neat outdoor spot too. Clean bathrooms. Will be back.

Yelp
We love Georgetown, SC! It's the quintessential charming town of coastal South Carolina. And as liveaboards, we especially love good restaurants within walking distance of our boat. The Independent is located literally steps from Harborwalk Marina in the George Hotel, and offers fine dining at reasonable prices in a beautiful setting. Our family enjoyed meeting up with my parents to form our party of 6, and were able to get a reservation same day with a table next to the window view of downtown. Every dish was delicious with a twist on the typical. We started with the grilled Caesar salad with herbed walnuts and also, deviled eggs with smoked trout roe. Our entrees included scallops with pickled strawberries, crab cakes over red pepper aioli, and duck with roasted brussels. I have to mention the complimentary herb bread that is so good, and our fresh house made mango sorbet -so so refreshing and light, the creamy cre brûlée, and the decadent chocolate ganache cake for dessert. All were shareable and not to be missed! Our waitress, Lovee, was a delight, and very helpful with our selections and my Mother's celiac restrictions. We look forward to returning to enjoy the delicious cuisine, lovely atmosphere, and gracious staff!

Yelp
Quite a dining experience. Everything from the decor, service, personality/engagement with waiter and food quality and presentation of food was amazing. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend. Flavors were out of this world together. We all raved of our dishes. Hummingbird cake was so light and delicious for dessert- good for sharing!

Yelp
Truly the best dining experience we have had in the last 5+ years. We came with our 4 year old son to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They were so thoughtful and even brought us out a dessert and an anniversary card signed by the whole staff! They were also exceptionally accommodating to my son's gluten allergy and were extremely knowledgeable about their food and ingredients. Our waiter provided exceptional service, as did the rest of the staff. The food was incredible, large portions and came out quickly. We can't wait to come back!

Mike L.

Yelp
The whole experience here was amazing from start to finish. The cocktails were well balanced, the appetizers were on point for elevated southern comfort food, and all of the mains were delicious. The staff was very attentive and made the meal a wonderful experience. We will definitely be back the next time we're in Georgetown.

Yelp
Had an amazing date here with my boyfriend. The waitstaff were so friendly and helpful. This restaurant is literally stunning, the decor is so beautiful. Classy. Food was good, the chef made me a special vegan meal which was very much appreciated. My boyfriend enjoyed his fish and crab as well. We both had a delicious and strong old fashioned which was very good. Recommended and I would love to go again.

Yelp
Our dinner was amazing! We were in town form NC for my birthday and the whole experience was phenomenal from the food to our server Samantha! Thank you for an amazing evening! I will be back!

Yelp
Great service and beautiful restaurant overall with a charming and cozy feel. It's definitely on the expensive side especially considering the portions are on the smaller side, yet the food was flavorful and not the same standard fare. They do have a great selection of cocktails. It's worth trying once but I don't think it will be in my regular rotation.

Yelp
I'm giving them five stars on the deviled eggs alone. Honestly. I didn't know I needed fried oysters on a deviled egg, but I do! They come three halves to a plate (that's one and a half full eggs). Our server even brought over another tray for us on her because we were looking hungry I guess. Either way, excellent! The other food was pretty good too. We made a reservation to meet up with some friends on Sunday and all eight of us fit comfortably at a pair of tables. My entrée was the crab cake eggs benedict. Superb. Coffee was caffeinated, tasty, and always full. Potatoes weren't has hot as I would've liked, but they weren't cold, just not hot. Otherwise, the service and the deviled eggs carried the show. I can't stop thinking about them. The deviled eggs.

Yelp
The Independent is the new bar/restaurant in The George hotel. The ambiance is welcoming with wood paneling, comfortable seating, and a rather large bar. Service was friendly and attentive. The food was very good though it's more quality than quantity. Definitely taste an appetizer and/or a salad to go along with your entree. This is a great spot to imbibe and converse with friends over appetizers, dinner, or dessert.

Patrick P.

Yelp
Don't eat here. Mediocre food with slow and rude service. The service at this hotel and restaurant was offensive and rude. You will regret going here, eating here, paying for it and dealing with the staff and waiters.

Dave T.

Yelp
We dropped in for our first visit this past Saturday for brunch. The service was really enjoyable, and we loved our food. My wife liked the breakfast sandwich and I can vouch for adding crab to the omelet this time of year.

Yelp
The Independent is the perfect addition to growing Georgetown. Chef Thomas has created a menu unlike anything else in the area, and it's especially fun to watch him and his team craft each dish in the open kitchen. To start, the BBQ carrots became an unexpected favorite at the table along with the burrata board, and crab dip which was on special. The flat iron meal was paired perfectly with Brussel sprouts, a vegetable I typically don't eat but ate every bite of, and the best sweet potato au gratin I've ever had. We especially appreciated the time and effort our server, Kim, took to make our evening special and ensure we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal. It's obvious that this team truly cares about the details and take pride in what they do. Cannot recommend The Independent enough, and cannot wait to return!

Yelp
Hunter took fabulous care of our party of five. Winning personality and attention to detail. We shared amazing wines, fresh seafood, and stunning craft cocktails. Our first time, but certainly not our last!

Yelp
Our family had a wonderful dinner at the Independent on April 30th. The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice and comforting. Our server, Ruthie, was exceptional and provided our dinner party with 5-star service, The food was also excellent from presentation to taste. The chef and his staff did an outstanding job with all our meals. We definitely will return to the Independent for another visit. I would highly recommend you try the Independent!

Wright W.

Yelp
It is a lovely environment. Very much a French brasserie feel. We were a large party (8) celebrating a birthday. It was the day before Thanksgiving, so the A-team may not have been in the kitchen. I would say the food was just OK. And the service was gracious but slow. We will definitely give it another try with a smaller party on a regular night.

Sandra N.

Yelp
The word delicious comes to mind when I think about the dining experience at this restaurant. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but everybody who served was so nice. I highly recommend having the deviled eggs with oysters on top as an appetizer. The crab appetizer was really really good as well. All our food was fantastic. It was obvious the chef was an expert! You will not be sorry!

Yelp
So excited about this new spot in Georgetown. The hotel is gorgeous, the outside bar is great and the food at the Independent is great. Don't skip the skillet cornbread!

Bryan B.

Yelp
Excellent food, wonderful wine list. Waiter named Hunter provided impeccable service to the table all night. He's a keeper.

David B.

Yelp
Wonderful birthday dinner celebration! The decor beautiful, the food was delicious and the service top notch. Such a great surprise. At first we were disappointed they did not have the she crab soup. However, it meant we shared multiple apps that were all delicious and we would have missed: corn bread, crab fingers, carrots, burrata salad and beet salad. While a lovely selection of entrees we had 4 flat iron steaks and 2 flounders. Both delicious. They have an amazing pastry chef as the desserts were killer. All were just delicious - chocolate cake, key lime, blue berry cobbler and hummingbird cake. An amazing way to end the birthday dinner. We will definitely come back. Restaurant is attached to the George hotel. The lobby was just beautiful. Would be happy to sit there for hours. What a special addition to Georgetown, SC.

Richard F.

Yelp
If you are staying in or around Georgetown SC we highly recommend dining at The Independent Restaurant located in The George Hotel on front street. We enjoyed several meals there ... each time super succulent in a relaxed yet jam packed atmosphere. We must start with our unbelievable friendly knowledgeable personable absolutely wonderful server Gretta (2T's)! The minute we met her we knew we were in the best hands ever and had a new friend for life. Her sincerity is infectious...her service and attention to detail flawless...and her recommendations were terrific! Over the course of our week we enjoyed the salmon and filet mignon (both cooked to perfection...with steak frites side(unbelievably crispy and served piping hot...nothing worse than cold fries) mussels as an appetizer in the best wine and butter and garlic sauce (spoon needed to sip the last drop)and the entree of the week the bone in pork chop ...two inches thick cooked to perfection by Chef Alicia it was tender and juicy in its own Au Jus...it doesn't get any better than that! Now for dessert...the mile high key lime pie is a must(such a different spin you've got to try)then the BEST strawberry sorbet you'll ever have...such intense and refreshing flavor , then the hummingbird cake (recommended by Chef Alicia...thank you)which I call a spin on carrot cake only better served with a rich caramel sauce what a combination...and last but certainly not least and probably THE BEST of all the desserts is the unmatched chocolate ganache cake...five layers of rich chocolate decadence accompanied by a scoop of malt ice cream and thick chocolate sauce....you can take your time and eat the entire slice but we recommend saving some to enjoy with hot morning coffee! Finally our heartfelt gratitude goes out to General Manager Jay Balser and Assistant Development Manager Jamie Meador for making our times at The Independent SO relaxing comfortable and enjoyable! Gentlemen you are REALLY great at what you do and it's reflected in the quality of food...it's superb preparation and presentation...your chefs...your staff and your servers (ESPECIALLY GRETTA)! We'll miss you but you all give us a great reason to come back to Georgetown!

Abbey L.

Yelp
The food was stunning and so delicious. However don't go here if you are absolutely starved unless you plan on ordering everything on the menu. The serving portions are generally quite small. The scallops come with 3 total and the asparagus we ordered had 4 pieces. The only decent serving size was the order of fries we received. Service is also a touch slow. We received food before drinks. BUT if you have the stomach the size of a toddler then the dishes are perfect size. And they are quite delicious.

Marianne H.

Yelp
Very poor dining experience. The service was horrible. It took over an hour to receive our dinner and restaurant was not busy as we ate very early in the evening. Food was terrible. My husbands pork chop overcooked and my blackened flounder was with accompaniments that were so spicy they were not edible. In addition, their Yukon whipped potatoes were potatoes not made from fresh real potatoes but from a box! The dessert a blood orange sorbet was so sour not edible! The French press coffee was luke warm and we were told they couldn't make chocolate martinis as they don't carry the ingredients but ten minutes later I saw the bartender make one for one of his "friends" at the bar! Even though the restaurant is only open 7 months, the wallpaper above our booth in the bar area is already peeling off the wall! Don't waste your money here and eat elsewhere. Overpriced and poor service!
