I went to the movies by myself. Here!s what happened. If you’ve never been to the Independent Picture House, you’re in for a treat. They don’t miss a detail. Ordered a soda, popcorn, and junior mints and ticket all at the concession stand, $20.85 total. Popcorn was fresh, soda was cold, and they asked me if I wanted my junior mints regular or from the fridge (nice touch). The theatre was packed, but the audience was polite and I was happy to see the movie begin when it was scheduled instead of endless commercials. The temperature was cool but not too cold, and the volume was not crazy loud. I thought I would look like a weirdo going by myself but that thought was eliminated when I noticed several other single patrons. The one thing that could be improved is the parking lot. It is too small for a multi-cinema theatre, but there was plenty of free street parking if you don’t mind walking a bit. Overall, great experience.

Support local businesses! Sure you can find flaws if you dig hard enough but this place is unique and well put together. Where else can you go and watch indie films and hard to find stuff.

Very clean place, sound was good, the picture was good. Photos of the theaters looked small but in person they really aren’t that small and you have lots of seating options. Lots of snack options, very easy and quick to get into the theater! Thanks for being amazing independent film house !!

I attended my first movie at the theater last night. It was an overall good experience. The seating was very comfortable. But there was one thing that really stood out. I ordered a few items from the concession counter. The young lady working the counter, then walked to my theater and opened the door for me. Now that is a first in all of my years of going to the movies.

I visited IPH for the first time last week. I loved the space. The theater was clean and welcoming, staff were friendly and helpful and the concessions were very reasonably priced! I loved that I paid a reasonable ticket price (about $13) for each ticket for a Friday evening! Definitely makes me want to go to the movies more and this will be my top pick of theater!

Very cute theater, I have been wanting to come for the longest and finally had the chance to. My employee does movies in her free time, so I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere of her latest movie. I love the colors in the lobby, and the theater was very clean as well as the bathrooms. The theater snacks and drinks are the typical priced ones. They do have beer and wine for sale as well.

The Charlotte Film Society is a non-profit, and in June of 2022 they opened this wonderful establishment. Their focus is on indie, foreign, and arthouse films. Their mission statement: "Non-profit community cinema that screens diverse, foreign, arthouse & independent film focused on educating, engaging, and enabling individuals through the powerful medium of film." It is always clean, the staff are friendly, the popcorn, which matters way more to me than it probably should, is delicious, and I'd wager it's the only theater in Charlotte that offers tiny cups of nutritional yeast to put on that popcorn. I always enjoy myself immensely whenever I go here!

This was my first time and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was clean and spacious with great service!

Yelp
Generally a great experience and great crowds. Highly recommend coming here if you'd like to watch movies with more conscientious people than what you'd usually find. I think the seats are fine for what they are. They're comfortable but my only complaint is that they're maybe a bit too close to each other in terms of row distance.

Yelp
Loved the Manor and now love the IPH! Incredible programming, great vibe, comfy seating ~ and fun wallpaper!

Yelp
I highly recommend supporting this small business. I think they offer a good selection of films each month that appeal to a diverse audience. There are also nice selections at the concession bar. There are three auditoriums with seating for 107, 77, or 17 people. The larger auditoriums have standard theater seating while the 17-person theater has reclining seats.

Yelp
I sat in the theater anticipating a good movie. Instead there were bright blue phone screens constantly coming on and off during the ENTIRE movie. This...is why we don't support movie theaters anymore. They are too PERMISSIVE. Back in the '60's, '70's and '80's the theater had FLOOR MONITORS whom roamed up and down the isles with a red flash light letting people know to behave during the movie. Bring that back! Tell these addicted assholes they will be asked to leave the theater if they are on their phones! There are a lot of people that share my sentiment. So....to the DEATH of independent movie theaters and the rest of them. Who cares!

Yelp
A great little theater. There's three rooms / one has less than 20 seats. It's perfect if you're into supporting Indy films - and some mainstream. The popcorn is fresh - and they have comp nutritional yeast to top it with - yummy!

Yelp
My new favorite theater. Went last night for to see the Terminator and it was great! Love they are having the summer of '84 series. The entire place is super clean and there is beautiful art to look at movie memorabilia. The popcorn is above the rest and staff is very friendly. Individual bathroom's which is rare and much appreciated. The micro theater is fantastic and the crowd had an awesome vibe. The prices for snacks and tickets are the most reasonable I've seen in Charlotte. I was so impressed I'm going to get the annual membership. Do yourself a favor and check this place out!

Yelp
What an amazing experience to see David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" in this space! Love that theaters like this still exist.

Yelp
Incredible little Indy movie house just outside the heart of NoDa. They choose really interesting films and we love their curated series as well. The staff is wonderful and so fun to talk movies with. Just a total gem of a spot. Please support IPH so we can keep this treasure of independent cinema thriving!

Yelp
Great independent selection, clean and friendly with the art house films we all loved when The Manor theater was around......

Yelp
Small local theater gem 5 minutes outside of Noda. Colorful decorations in the lobby + a combined ticketing and concessions counter greet you upon entering. They have all the candy you could possibly want at a theater, but then a variety of other offerings... Like the fully stocked King of Pops fridge! From local kombucha to espresso they truly had it all covered in the beverage department too. Seats were comfortable and theatre was clean! I'm excited to have a favorite movie theater again.

Yelp
This place is a breath of fresh air! I thoroughly enjoy Indi-films and B-side movies. Before this, Charlotte was dependent upon private events and IYKYK vibes, which works for the intimate feel but doesn't really help the independent film makers receive the credit/acknowledgement they deserve. Then here comes the IPH to save the day! They're located in a developing area off of Sugar Creek, which aligns with the dope-ness of the place. (If you attended the Black Boy Art Show earlier this year - then you know where this is). The parking is sufficient enjoy to accommodate those wishing to catch a show. The simplest thing I love about IPH is my ability to order my ticket and concession items in one transaction. This isn't always the case but I do appreciate the small convenience. I went here to view Daughters of the Dust to kick off BHM and I'm already planning to go back soon. The ticket is super affordable AND they offer a single serving of popcorn for us solo-enthusiasts that don't wish to have a large bag. There's also a few local beers on tap, so you can enjoy something a little more refreshing than soda if you want. So overall, I paid around $23 for my movie ticket, snacks and a beer. Yeah... I'm going back. IPH does a great job with marketing the movies that are in rotation on their IG page, so go check them out.

Yelp
Charlotte used to have a number of movie houses that showed independent and foreign films. And then there were none. Thankfully "The Indie" opened up this summer. Attributes: 1. Everything's new! (Except the popcorn machine which they say came from The Manor Theater, after it closed) 2. Beer and Wine! 3. Really cool movies (most recently saw "The Menu" there - wow, what a wild film). Now that it's "Oscars Season", more great films will be coming. 4. Great location. Is it NoDa? North Noda? Sugar Creek? Doesn't matter - just head up North Davidson and you're there. (Stop for a treat at Amelie's or Goodyear House, or a drink at Jack Beagle's or a beer at Wooden Robot before you get another at The Indie. 5. Nice to support a non-profit cinema. Charlotte really needs to support its local art community - they show films from local filmmakers, host the Charlotte Film Festival, etc. Will be back soon!

Yelp
Independent Picture House is so neat! It was my first time here today and what a treat!! I was in micro theater 3 to watch "The Master Gardener." Seats were super comfy and i love the living room feel. I had eaten prior to checking this place out so I didn't partake in any of the concessions, but they did look good. Also the bathrooms are cool- all of them are individual rooms any one can use them- not womens or mens only. I 100% recommend this place and I will go again in the future!

Yelp
Best independent movie theater! A friend and I went to for indigenous peoples day: shorts showcase (hosted in collaboration with the Levine Museum of the New South) AND we went to watch "past lives". This theater is intimate and cozy. The lobby area is so colorful and decorated with historic photos, film equipment, and movie posters. There's plenty of restrooms, and for my menstruating folk, they do provide period products. We love a thoughtful org! The theaters themselves are really cozy and the seats are soo comfortable! It also has a slight slope so you definitely can see the screen no matter where you are in the theater. There's also a concession stand if you want to grab a snack and they have some cute merch available. It's a really cool theater, located very close to downtown. And I love that they collaborate with local organizations to showcase film with folks of various intersectional identities. More of that always please! For folks who used to frequent the Asian corner mall area, like myself, the theater is literally right next door. Perfect location that's a short drive to downtown. This non-profit theater is run by volunteers, so definitely make a stop through!

Yelp
Intimate space where your fellow audience members love great films as much as you do!!! Community owned. Charlotte focused. A gem . Oh ... and Private individual bathrooms! Hot tea at the concession stand! Small Indy films you'll see nowhere else in the region. Five stars

Yelp
Had a stellar experience here with a friend! Love how fun and bright the entrance is and that there's history in this place! Friendly and approachable staff members, as well as a great menu of snacks and drinks to enjoy during your show! Very clean and tidy space. I really love the overall atmosphere here and highly recommend that you check out this hidden gem if you haven't yet! It's a nice place to see movies that are not available or shown in other mainstream theatres.

Yelp
I've been waiting for an independent film theater in Charlotte since I moved here and I'm so excited this place finally opened! The inside in gorgeous with bright colors, movie posters everywhere, a cute sitting area in the lobby. The movie line up is great with many movies not shown elsewhere. When you walk in you'll go to the concessions counter which is where they sell tickets. There's a wide range of concessions with popcorn, drinks, candy, cookies. I particularly loved the small detail of having nutritional yeast as a popcorn topping. There's a good choice of alcohol with a few wines and 5-6 beers on draft. They offer memberships that give you $3 off per ticket and free popcorn, free for students! I came for a Tues matinee and was the only one in the theater. The seats were new and super comfy, they don't recline but I didn't mind. This will be the first of many trips here!

Yelp
This is becoming one of our favorite theaters in Charlotte! It's awesome to have a spot with lesser known movies that we can go to when the bigger movies aren't grabbing us!

Yelp
Wonderful theater in Charlotte! Had the pleasure of joining my company for a movie screening. Staff was so nice! Decor is so cute!

Yelp
New, clean, pleasant and artsy. If you knew the staff at the Manor, you will be pleased to see your old friends at the IPH. The popcorn is yummy! They are more than a movie house as they coordinate film series and programs with the community happenings and concerns. They throw a pretty hot party, too. You can also book a cozy theater for your own private party. What a rich experience for those of us without an in-home theater. I am retired and enjoy volunteering for the IPH. Because I am a member, they let me review films for the Charlotte Film Society!

R T.

Yelp
So fresh and wonderful. The movie selection is unbeatable. The neighborhood is odd but I am sure the founders are very forward thinking and their thoughts were "if we build it, they will come". The theaters are just so clean and new and the concessions are just as wonderful. Service was very friendly too. I will be back often!

Yelp
I've been looking for an indie theater in Charlotte since I moved back home and I was excited when I discovered this one this summer when I came to see David Lynch's Lost Highway!! It's so cutely decorated with the plaid outside and everything inside is nice and new and filled with old time-y movie posters -- even the bathrooms! The popcorn's great, there's a nice lobby, and there's plenty of drink and candy options at the concessions stand with a few different wines and beers. The Indie plays many foreign or more indie (true to its name) films that aren't shown elsewhere in Charlotte and its seats are very very new. I've come back many times since to see the Banshees of Inisherin, The Menu, and recently, Broker. I've been meaning to expand into other films and I'll definitely come back for them :) Definitely plan a movie night here soon!! Also!! It's close enough to the light rail to be able to use public transport to visit, but if not, it's got plentyyy of parking. Last I've heard, they're trying to expand the lounge area and add more food options in about a year too :)

Yelp
What Charlotte has been missing! Since various other independent movie theaters have closed their doors, there has been a huge hole in the art community that Independent Picture House has filled! The space is so beautiful and intentional and the variety of the movies they play have something for everybody. If you haven't been yet, you need to plan a movie night asap1

Yelp
Not only is it incredibly important, culturally, that Charlotte have a true home for independent film, the IPH is just an amazingly fun place to see a movie. The theatre itself is cozy, fun, well-designed, and inviting. The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and adept at creating an instant sense of community and belonging. The concessions are delightful, the seats are comfortable, and the film selection is consistently diverse and of the utmost quality. Make going to the movies matter again, and do it here.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic theater which shows almost exclusively limited release, arthouse, and independent films, something Charlotte has been desperately needing on a larger scale for a long, long time! The staff are terrific, the place is kept very clean, and everything is very reasonably priced. I seriously cannot recommend this place enough. It's easily among the very best places to catch a movie in Charlotte! A++

Yelp
I absolutely love this theater! If you love film as much as I do this is the perfect place for you. Shows so many indie films you cant see anywhere else and get to experience the art in the environment it was made for. The theaters are clean and comfortable, along with the whole building. The staff is polite and welcoming and its great to support local. All movie lovers should check The Independent Picture House out!

Jason L.

Yelp
Great time at our first visit to the Independent! We ordered our tix online ahead of time. They have lots of parking (a luxury item in NoDa!). They had a great selection of beer and wine. The staff was friendly! The movie selections look like they are refreshed often (curated is probably the better word). You can tell that the team behind this non-profit puts a lot of care into this place and its on-screen content. It feels pretty special.

Tripp B.

Yelp
The first thing I did when moving to Charlotte was find the local independent theater. Lucky enough for me, I found The Independent Picture House. The unique selection of films is always great, but I was pleasantly surprised by the awesome vibe the theater emits. Modern, funky, and fun - The Independent Picture House is truly the a breath of fresh air in comparison to larger theaters.

Amy B.

Yelp
I had a fantastic time at this theater. I was eager to see a Thousand and One and stumbled across this theater as an option to see the film and am so glad I went here. It was so quaint, cute, and very clean. The staff was nice and the tickets and concessions were affordable. The film was in the microtheater which had 17 seats that also reclined, there are 2 other theaters I didn't see but hopefully will when I go back. I highly recommend this place as I normally don't go to movies unless I'm dying to see it and I had such a great experience I want to go back.

Kyle H.

Yelp
Awesome local theater with a great staff - definitely the best place to see indies, too. Highly recommend!

Frank D.

Yelp
A perfect neighborhood theater. It's clean, welcoming and staff are always friendly. On top of the fact that they're the only independent theater in town, they also are proud to help out the local art community as well. I highly recommend checking out a showing here.
