A last minute find wanting a nice lunch - we booked at 11am for a 1.30pm lunch. Was impressed we could be accommodated. First impressions were good; a nice restaurant room, polite, well turned out, and courteous staff. We went for the five course tasting menu for £60; one of us had the wine accompaniment for £35. The snacks were decent, a very nice liver parfait and a second less memorable one. The starter of mushrooms with and egg yolk and baron bigod snow was good - all the right combinations in the right way. The fish sea bass fish course with samphire and a split dill oil (I think) was nice but lacked a tad of seasoning - the samphire wasn't salty enough to hold it. The lamb main course had really lovely elements, a great sauce but was slight let down by a spiralised courgette and herb accompaniment that was leaching water and washed the intensity of the lovely flavour away. Two plain hasselback potatoes were out of proportion with the protein, which was one of the smallest pieces I have been served on a tasting menu. However, the lamb was delicious. One felt a little less potato and a bit more lamb, and possibly some lamb fat in the potato. I am being really picky in truth. The pudding soufflé was delicious; top class, beautifully standing out of the dish. |I only had a brief taste of the wine, but all seemed nice and appropriately picked - generous sizes too.|Service was very good; precise and reassuring around an allergy. It rather dropped off at the end - our pudding plates sat empty for almost thirty minutes infront of us.|However, in real terms the little holes I have picked in this are tiny. A five course tasing menu for £60, and under a £100 per person with wine is stunning value for what is served up. The food is precise, well though through, and very enjoyable. I know of almost no where which comes out at this level of value. It richly deserved its AA rosettes. Would I go again - absolutely - possibly for the evening menu and a room next time.|Thank you to the team at The Swan.
