4 Best Day Trips from Philadelphia | Condé Nast Traveler

"The playwright George Kaufman once owned this 100-acre farm estate, which has a decidedly playful and creative vibe. There are 16 rooms scattered across the Manor House, the barn, and cottages of the bed and breakfast. Each one is individually designed, but all share a traditional, antiques-filled look and feel. This is a country getaway through and through, so if sleeping in, taking a leisurely walk, and reading a book are right up your alley, you'll fall in love, but this is not the Four Seasons . There isn't much in the way of hotel amenities (other than a pool and spa with services by appointment)." - Nancy DePalma

We got married here on Friday and I cannot recommend this venue more. The staff at barely sheaf are experts, Kelly and Jessica made everything run so smoothly and kept everything clear and organized. The venue itself is beautiful, the food is amazing, the rooms were great, and overall the service was impeccable. The experience from top to bottom was professional and enjoyable. We knew we were in good has with Kelly and Jessica!! If you have the opportunity to get married here… take it!!!

We were lucky enough to have gotten married at The Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm this past August and it ended up being a perfect, beautiful experience. We had 110 guests and it feels like every one of them mentioned how much they loved the venue and so many people asked how we found this magical place! My husband and I live in Spain and originally wanted a European destination wedding. However, we had family who couldn’t travel abroad, and once we toured the Barley Sheaf we felt it had some of the European charm/ vibe that we were looking for closer to our families, and just had a special feeling walking through the property. It really checked all of our boxes. Between the natural beauty and history of the grounds and gardens, the beautiful and unique rooms, the restored barn, and the warmth of the service, we felt like we were able to treat our guests to something truly special. Unlike other venues we toured, this one didn’t feel like a “wedding factory.” We love that they only have one wedding per day and having family and close friends stay with us onsite for the weekend made it feel like a home away from home. The food throughout the weekend was absolutely excellent! We loved the brunch for those staying at the venue and the wedding food was so delicious! They also had great recommendations for wedding vendors, which helped make planning easier, and we absolutely loved everyone we worked with. We are so looking forward to returning for future weekend getaways. It is a peaceful, magical, stunning place. When we originally booked the venue it was with the old owners and we were a bit nervous about the new ownership. However they have made some wonderful improvements to the venue and were so amazing to work with. I want to highlight working with Kelly, Theresa and Jessica specifically because they were always there to answer any question no matter how big or small. The team at Barley Sheaf are such thoughtful hosts and have created something truly special here. We’re so grateful and can’t wait to come back and visit!

Starting with the good — and a huge shoutout to the amazing staff at Barley! We had our wedding here and worked mostly with Kelly, who was absolutely fabulous. I truly couldn’t have planned this wedding without her. She was organized, kind, and incredibly detail-oriented. An absolute dream to work with — Barley Sheaf is lucky to have her. The grounds are stunning and so picturesque. Everything went smoothly during both the ceremony and reception, thanks to Kelly and the rest of the team. Now, why I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5: When we originally booked in 2024, Barley was under different ownership. The previous owners were warm, attentive, and made us feel seen and respected — it was actually a major reason we chose the venue. A few months after we booked, new management took over. Unfortunately, we didn’t feel the same warmth or attentiveness from the new owner, Theresa. I don’t know if I said or did something wrong that offended her during planning, but we often felt like she was standoffish and uninterested in making us feel welcome. As wonderful as our wedding turned out, we left the next morning feeling a bit deflated because of how we were treated by her. A few specific issues: After the rehearsal, we were allowed to check in early — great! We wanted to nap before the dinner, but noticed a stained comforter (blood or rust). We asked for clean bedding at the front desk. After 45 minutes with no response, we followed up. Theresa came to the room and explained that the cleaning crew was busy prepping for a wedding that night. While that’s understandable, we were confused why she couldn’t just bring fresh sheets herself — we were happy to make the bed. Also, the air conditioning was stuck on freezing. When I mentioned it, she was dismissive and told us she didn’t know when maintenance would arrive. Her attitude felt cold — not what you expect from someone running a wedding venue. On the wedding day: We got ready in the barn and had access to the bridal suite for one hour. After getting ready, we had no one to help move our things from the barn to the suite. We were shocked — especially with the time crunch and amount of stuff we had to move. We asked for help and were told, “Usually the bridal party takes care of that.” My bridal party included only my mother, MIL (both over 70), my MOH, and a friend who was 30+ weeks pregnant. My MOH had to run up and down the stairs multiple times and was dripping with sweat. We are all in our 30s and have been a part of multiple weddings and have never experienced something like that at another venue. It felt like staff should’ve recognized the limitations of our group and offered help — instead, we were met with attitude. Lastly, Theresa was barely present the entire day. Past reviews under old ownership raved about how involved and supportive the owners were during weddings. Maybe she was working behind the scenes, but from our perspective, she never checked in or made us feel celebrated. We didn’t feel like she cared — and definitely didn’t feel like the bride and groom that day by how we were treated.

We dined at Kaufman's (Barley Sheaf's restaurant) on a Friday evening at 6pm, our very first time anywhere on the property. We were told to sit down and wait for our table, despite it being past 6 when we arrived and the dining rooms were empty. Our first impression was that the inn’s decor seemed tired and dated, despite the “rebrand” of the restaurant. During his opening remarks, the server was too eager to assert that the restaurant "will earn a Michelin star" which we found a little gauche. My wife is gluten-free due to autoimmune issues and we called ahead to ensure the kitchen knew this ahead of time. Under the impression from all the boasting on their website that they had an executive chef and team with knowledge of the fine dining industry and the highest level of consummate creativity, we believed they would make some changes or substitutions. We were sorely wrong. The meal started with a brioche that was tasteless, dry, and hard. My wife was offered nothing in substitution, not even GF crackers. The meager first course of beets were too sweet and tasted canned, scattered with something rather like beer nuts and a disproportionate amount of frothed cheese. My wife was informed by the waiter she could not eat anything in the second course, so we skipped it. Again, no modifications were offered. The "intermezzo" of a tasting spoon of sorbet was syrupy sweet and we didn't finish it. Amuses are meant to cleanse the palate, not sicken it. Her loup de mer came out in a plate with a deceptively large rim, shrouding the fact that she was given about eight fava beans, some type of thinly-drizzled puree, and a narrow, paper-thin filet of branzino that was more skin than meat. It should also be noted that there are no sides or accompaniments offered to order a la carte such as roasted vegetables or starches. My duck was a small portion and was, like everything else, too sweet. After being told that my wife could not eat the flourless chocolate cake (despite, by definition, not containing any wheat flour), or any of the other deserts, we left quickly and headed down the road to a very popular, chic inn (one of our favorites) where we enjoyed a lovely rest of the evening. The owners and executive chef of Barley Sheaf/Kaufman's seem too focused on earning cash while demanding respect and reputation rather than earning it. We will not be returning.

We absolutely loved every minute of planning and having our wedding with the Barley Sheaf. The entire team was thoughtful, creative, accommodating, sweet, and good at their jobs. We worked most with Kelly, and she is a rockstar!!! The venue is beautiful and can be left alone to be gorgeous or I would imagine can accommodate a wide range of themes. The food was amazing!! They even created a new dish not on their menu for us. All of our guests loved the venue and raved about every aspect.

Google
As locals, we have been coming to the restaurant for years — always great food/service/ambience. So we were very pleased that our bride & groom chose this venue for their June 2025 wedding! Mark & Deena have moved on to another chapter of their lived but the new owners haven’t skipped a beat! Waitstaff & bar staff provided top notch service! A very lovely affair in every aspect & we’re still getting compliments from friends & relatives!!!

Google
We have come here several times and had good experiences as vegans. The chef would come up with dishes for us as long as we give them notice. We called and were told to expect the same, but then received a phone call 2 hours before dinner and Ranya informed us that the chef cannot accommodate us this time, as they had no vegan food to make. Canceling on us two hours before our reservation on a Friday night is completely unacceptable. We will not be back.

We had our wedding at Barley Sheaf and we would HIGHLY recommend! When we first toured Barley Sheaf (and was our only venue that we toured because our decision was easy), we were overjoyed by the warm welcome we received from the staff. The historic ambiance and beautiful scenery added to the list of reasons we decided to plan our special day here. From the beginning of the planning process up until we checked out the morning after our wedding, it was an overall 10/10 experience. The food is excellent, staff is amazing to work with, and everyone makes you feel like you are right at home. A few special shout outs: To Kelly who answered my (many) questions and helped us bring our dream wedding into a reality! You are a rockstar and we truly appreciate everything. To Melissa who worked with us to accomodate our guests, answer lodging questions, and helped ensure each of our guests had a cozy place to stay for the weekend. And to the entire Barley Sheaf staff for your generous hospitality, amazing food, and overall fantastic service.

Yelp
Here for a wine pairing dinner. The menu is pictured. We have dined here before. It is an "Italian Wine Night" and we noted two of our favorite wines on the list as well as some nice dishes. We started with a prosecco from the Veneto and some nice appetizers. This was a five course menu preceded by cocktails. The ambiance was an older farmhouse and we sat at a long table with Gail our wine presenter/expert sitting across from us. There were approximately 18 guests. The kitchen was open for us to see and aromas were pleasant . The food was outstanding and we particularly enjoyed the pappardelle and Osso Buco my wife has some leftovers. The wines were perfectly paired and we really enjoyed them all. The Nizzi Barbera was notable. Service was great and Gail was excellent providing history and explanations of all the wines. The second pairing had a bit of an issue with a corked bottle but all was made right. The chef came out as each course was served to explain the dishes and their preparation. We will return when another wine dinner is offered. Mark & Nancy.

Yelp
Since our last visit (6 years ago) things have radically changed. Now The Inn is what we expected way back then. Today you are greeted with a warm and non cluttered space as you enter and a nice atmospheric feeling in the dining room. The Chef has changed since that time too, bringing a fresh new and exciting menu to the table as well as a 7 course Tasting menu you can also try - we went for the tasting at $130 pp and it was well worth it. It would be too lengthy to try to describe each dish but all but one ( the Larchmont Farm Nectarine) was extraordinary. There is a very small cocktail/wine list now. The most expensive wine being around $50 or so. If you BYO, there is a $25 corkage fee. All the staff were very friendly and informed and described each dish as it was presented. Most of the tables were full the entire night. Not an inexpensive meal but we will return and most likely just order from the regular menu.

Yelp
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Barley Sheaf and had a lovely meal. Certainly our favorite meal from a local establishment since we relocated to Bucks County this year after living in NY/NJ for the past decade. We started off with the Nectarine and the Foie Gras. The nectarine was just ok, but the Foie Gras was divine. A high price point for a first course, but we both felt it was worth the bite. For our second course, we had the Mushroom Veloute and the Maine Lobster Squash Blossom. My husband and I were both very excited about the lobster. While the lobster was good, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we both much preferred the soup. The Mushroom Veloute was my husband's favorite dish of the evening. For our mains, we enjoyed the Duck Breast and the Wagyu Short Rib. Both were excellent. The Short Rib was extremely tender. My favorite between them though was the duck, which is apparently chef's specialty. It was the best prepared duck I've had, and the orange gel accompaniment offered a mouth watering sweet and tangy balance. For dessert, we shared the Apple Mille-Feuille. It was the perfect end to our meal. We did go in with the hopes of enjoying the chef's tasting menu experience. I disclosed that I have a mollusk allergy but I fear it was confused for a total shellfish allergy, as I was told they would not be able to accommodate my restrictions for the tasting menu and I believe the scallops were the only thing on the menu that would've been off limits. We will definitely look forward to going back to Barley Sheaf for our special occasions.

Yelp
Beautiful setting and spectacular food. When we sat down, our server told us to get ready for a Michelin star worthy dinner. With a bold statement like that, we were incredibly excited to dive into the Chef's 7-Course Tasting Menu. We were not disappointed. The service was exceptional. The food was next level quality with unexpected and creative flavors that only a truly gifted chef could create. This was an experience we will never forget and can't wait to return and share with friends!

Charlie M.

Yelp
We had dinner there on Saturday evening. The experience was very good with 3 exceptions: 1) Their $14 cabernet wine pour was light. I think they poured a 2oz tasting portion rather than a 5 oz standard pour customary at the price point. We considered mentioning it but didn't...we should have. I took a photo and verified the light pour once we got home. 2) The $45 Foie Gras appetizer is dramatically overpriced for what you get. It would have been a great $25 appetizer. 3) Since they have a recent liquor license, they have a $25 corkage fee. We expected them to have a more full-service bar. Unfortunately, they have limited drinks (two specialty cocktails and a small selection of wines, albeit nice wines...that's it). They should waive the corkage fee until they resolve their liquor service issues. On the positive side, the food and service were excellent, and the specialty cocktails were excellent and innovative. I hope they resolve their liquor and pricing issues in short order.

Yelp
We came back to Barley Sheaf after about 6 years to a completely different experience. The food was very good before, but with the new chef it is outstanding. We chose the 7 course tasting menu for $130 PP, but you can also order a la carte. Most of the plates were appetizer size, so it's not a crazy amount of food. We did take half of our duck breast home. The wine list is small, but reasonably priced, and there are a few cocktails. The interior of the restaurant has been repainted a soft white, and has an elegant feel, and the reception room is now tidy and welcoming. Our waiter Haikim was very charming and knowledgeable, and explained all of the courses. It was a very special experience, and we will definitely come again.

Yelp
We visited this venue since we attended a wedding here The staff was amazing and well organized This place is amazing and my Salmon was tasty. I'll be back

Yelp
food was excellent. chef tries very hard to get different flavors and textures into the dishes. i had duck which was wonderfully rich. the beet salad had a range of flavors including what i thought was citrus. new owners moved to Bucks County to make a go of it. worth trying.

Yelp
FUNDRAISER RECEPTION REVIEW ONLY Please don't judge the Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm experience solely by this evening designed to accommodate past and future political success on a tight budget. That wouldn't be fair. But, it may be an indication of what you get under these unusual circumstances. The approach to this old farmstead turned bed & breakfast, banquet hall and hotel is indeed a long gravel tree lined driveway. I am sure it is spectacular in Spring and Summer with everything in bloom and at full flush. However, on a chilly late February evening with over 200 cars attempting to arrive in time for the start of the celebration, forced to crawl along bumper to bumper due to poorly realized valet parking, it was slow motion torture. It was only when the valet process was removed and people were able to park themselves, that the queue began to accelerate and allow people to move on to the evening pleasantries. The sense of relief that someone finally figured that out was only marginally reduced by the trek through the mud to reach the large hall. The staff was game, and did the best they could to serve hor d'oeuvres with all those people standing around to talk with friends and refusing to take seats until they were compelled to do so by more demanding voices. Those bacon wrapped dates were delicious. The evening was more about speeches and rallying cries in support of the upcoming elections, but a food buffet was available that most of us were hungry for. That line was almost as long and slow as the wait for parking. By the time I reached the food tables, the only things left were decent hamburger sliders, two pastas and tossed salad - and too small plates to hold my choices. Of course, the same was true for dessert, which was gone when I went to find it. By then, people were again out of their seats and congregating in knots. I was one of them, having accepted the fact that this was what this night was all about and that it was best to go with the flow and accept the cacophony. After all, we were there to support candidates up and down the ballot. In this goal we would surely be grandly rewarded. The rest really didn't matter.

Yelp
Before the Lockdown, Barley Sheaf, a lovely onetime rural hideaway for Broadway celebrities, was a sought-after destination for exquisite dining between New York and Philadelphia. Then its executive chef left for family reasons after many years of service, replaced by the sous chef, who in turn departed after a brief stint. The remaining support staff did a surprisingly worthwhile job of holding down the fort thereafter. Yet, all this took its toll on the longtime owners, who were finally relieved by an experienced group which acquired the operation in November 2024. The result has been a pleasant surprise. New executive chef Greg Vassos, long regarded as one of the region's leading culinary lights, migrated to Barley Sheaf with the new ownership. The results are outstanding, judging from our initial visit. For us, it's a rare experience to dine where a single dish is arguably superior to any of its type we've had before. Yet, here we had not one, but two: the duck and the pork belly, both sous vide using locally sourced product and no small dash of creative preparation. It was not what we expected: actually a skosh superior to what we had experienced for years under the former exec chef. The only imperfection throughout was radish that slightly overwhelmed the filet mignon. After all this, the otherwise worthy dessert act that followed seemed less memorable than it might have otherwise. Ditto two of the three local cheeses, although the truffle cheese was a standout. Service was helpful and professional, yet unpretentious, with dishes being whisked immediately from preparation to table. It's still BYO, so load up your wine carrier with your best wines. But now, instead of a la carte it's $115 prix fixe for four courses, plus a 20 percent service charge -- $138 in all, plus any extras and surtips. They indicate the menu should be evolving regularly in line with what's available fresh locally. Note: Barley Sheaf also offers wedding and kindred group activities. These facilities and staff are completely separate from the fabled standalone restaurant, with pricing and food that are notably dissimilar.

Yelp
I was truly impressed with my lunch today, it was fantastic. At an event with over 100 people I usually do not expect super fresh , well cooked food but that wasn't the situation today. The salmon was excellent, cooked perfectly. The chicken was tender and cooked perfectly also , very impressive. The service was also impressive as everyone at the table was served at once by individual servers. The view was a fabulous and desert was also fabulous. My first experience here was much better then I expected, especially with some of the less then stellar reviews. Definitely recommend this place and can't wait to return!

Yelp
Made reservations for Valentine's Day supper. What a delightful idea. What's extra lovely about eating in this wonderful historical home is that it was indeed a home that entertained, and had so many memories in it. We sat in the main dining room next to the chef's kitchen near the fireplace. All the tables had this in space between them, which made it extra intimate for me and my Valentine. As each of the courses were served, we could the light with each other upon receiving it, and enjoying all the special preparations of such amazingly delicious dishes. Everything was so fresh and so fragrance and so delicious. It really is a very unique dining experience and such a special place to share with someone . Even though I had ordered the olive oil cake, we got an additional service of four complimentary sweets and a cookie to take home. And the service was fantastic. I really love this place.

Yelp
Never fail to have an amazing meal here! The menu changes regularly but you will always be in for a treat. Went recently for New Year's Eve dinner, enjoyed the first course lobster dish and the crab salad - both were divine and especially still thinking about the crab salad! For our entrees, the duck breast was flavorful and cooked to perfection, the venison was truly exceptional!! The potatoes were very unique & tasty with a strong smoky flavor. The service is excellent, both owners make sure to check up on the meal and are lovely people as well. For dessert the chocolate cake with homemade vanilla ice cream was the perfect end. It's BYOB so don't forget to bring along your favorite wine.

Yelp
So yummy! Loved the tasting menu very creative and unique. Tried dishes I don't normally have. Good for special occasions

Yelp
Food was good, but extremely expensive for the portions. Three scallops for $44.00, Tiny portion of beef tartare for $24.00. 20 percent service charge included in bill, which server said that goes to the staff. She then suggested that we give her more.

Yelp
Spectacular dinner in the most beautiful setting. Rained as we were driving in and we were greeted by a double rainbow and a herd of deer. Outside was not open but we were seated with an expansive view of the outdoors. Actually preferred looking at the beautiful inside decor and the open kitchen. Celebrating so had every course. All unique and cooked to perfection. Every server was nicer than the last. Was a long drive and spent overnight nearby. Next time will book a room at this most delightful inn.

Yelp
This place is outstanding! I can't believe we haven't been here until now. The grounds, service, and food are amazing! Definitely putting this on our go to fine dining places. This is a BYOB with a great chef. Check it out!

Yelp
The Barley Sheaf is situated on a country estate which was originally developed in 1740. It's located in Holicong, PA which is between New Hope and Doylestown. It's really quite beautiful here. As you turn off from York Road, you drive down a long shaded driveway reminiscent of an old English manor. You then see the main building where the restaurant and inn are and there are also quite a few ancillary buildings dotting the landscape, as well as sprawling farm lands out back. We were looking for a brunch spot one day and found them via Open Table. We made a reservation and stopped in at noon. We were warmly greeted by the reception and seated right away. The waitress came by and gave us the rundown. She told us we can have anything on the menu and as much as we wanted. I was not expecting that, but it turned out to be a really nice deal. The food was great! We had frittatas, the mushroom and egg polenta, the fried goat cheese, and the salmon with potatoes, fennel and broccoli de Cicco. Everything was outstanding. Also big shout out to the Barley Sheaf for amazing coffee. I usually hate restaurant coffee, but theirs was truly rich and flavorful. The price was $39.50 per person before tax and tip, which for brunch is a bit expensive to be sure. But the food quality was top notch and the atmosphere was definitely unique. No regrets, it was well worth it. We really enjoyed ourselves. After our meal, we walked around a bit and soaked up the beauty of the estate. Our kids loved the animals on the property and in particular loved feeding dandelions to the goats. Amazing food in a very charming setting. Five stars. One of my favorites in Bucks County.

Yelp
Very nice upscale place for brunch or lunch. Food is impeccably prepared and service is top notch. Do be prepared for the bill. They are very proud of their meals

Yelp
Beautiful location for weddings. However, I do not recommend staying overnight. The rooms are outdated and not in the aesthetically pleasing type of way. They seriously need to do some deep cleaning and remodeling. I specifically asked for no room service, yet it was done anyways. To end things on a positive note, there is a nice farm on the property with livestock.

Zach K.

Yelp
I have held several events at the Inn at Barley Sheaf, and have always had a fantastic experience. In the planning phase, Mark and his team are easy to work with and accommodating of whatever you throw at them. The events have ranged from 50-200+ people, and they're always able to make it work and provide a great experience. The staff that runs the events are always kind, personable, and extremely helpful. There is no shortage of helping hands who are able to deliver for a great time. The atmosphere at Barley Sheaf is always nice and overlooks a beautiful farm providing for great views throughout the night. We've had several different types of food over the years, and it is always delicious and timed right over the course of the night. I highly recommend Barley Sheaf for your next event, and I know we will be back!

Yelp
This is great for the location. Perfect for a romantic or sophisticated evening. Even from the get-go driving in is beautiful with the long driveway, canvassed with wonderful, old trees, and near the end you are greeted with a barn on one side and a dignified inn/restaurant on the right. We ate outside due to COVID-19, but that made the experience even more special, as we were able to observe the beautiful grounds, great landscaping, and enjoy the night air. The wait staff was pleasant and agreeable. It is more refined than your usual restaurant in this area, for instance, they have a bottle service, proper linens, two servers per tables, etc. I The attention to detail was top notch and my few minor requests for this or that were always observed. Prior to being seated we were led through the inn, which looked architecturally interesting and I enjoyed the idea of observing the open-air kitchen in a post-pandemic world. The wine list was very good with beautiful glasses and a heady range of flavors and regions. On to the dinner menu! For the first course, I had the Charred English Cucumber Salad which was beautifully presented and contained a bevy of textures while retaining the lightness appropriate for an appetizer. My DP enjoyed the chilled English pea soup, and probably more so the bread that accompanied the meal. ;) For the second course, I opted for one of the specials that evening, which was the grilled octopus. The octopus was so tender and well plated. I have not had such well prepared octopi since Morimoto in Philadelphia. My DP had the smoked salmon which was again expertly plated and offered a few contrasts of textures and flavors without overdoing it. For entrees, I opted for another special, which was the pheasant, and my DP the halibut. The pheasant was certainly interesting and enjoyable to me, as somewhat outside my usual alimentary regimen, however, it's lightness and perfect pairing of accompaniments were an excellent way to round out the meal. My DP enjoyed the halibut which was well paired too with sweet onions et al. Mixed mushrooms made a hearty side for this course and were well prepared sans an overbearing use of oils or butter. We did not partake of dessert at this juncture, as we were both nicely sated, however, the petit fours to wrap up the meal were a pleasant and smile-provoking way to end the culinary journey.

Yelp
If you are looking for romantic, quaint, and charming then this is your place. Located just down the road from Peddler's Village, this restaurant is a must try for anyone looking for a dining experience. As you drive up to the restaurant, you know you are in for a treat. It's BYOB and as you enter the staff greet you and take your wine. There is a large sitting area where you wait for your table. Once you get to your table, your wine is waiting for you. This was a nice touch. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The service was a 10! We started with the Endive Salad and the Crab Appetizer. The salad had whipped ricotta, apples and walnuts. The combination was delicious. The crab appetizer was creamy and melted in your mouth. I chose the lobster for my main and it didn't disappoint. The artichokes complimented the perfectly cooked lobster tail. The beef main was a nice portion of filet and smoked short rib. They were both delicious. We were celebrating my birthday so dessert was a must. The decomposed chocolate cake was memorable. Then came a plate of complimentary bite size treats. Each one was unique and tasty. After paying they send you home with two cookies nicely wrapped to enjoy before bed. It was a really nice touch!

Yelp
Where to start, where to start. This place has been on our must try list for some time. We finally out it on the calendar and indulged. For starters this is not a large place. It has location and ambiance in its corner. Cute and charming. Then it all goes off the rails We each actually felt we weee being punked. We ordered two separate appetizers and different entrees. I can offer a spoiler alert and say we quickly and politely asked for to go boxes and declined desserts. Luckily at home we had leftover indian food from namaste ( cant be beat) to save us! The scallops were ok. But dry and tasteless. The salad was a hunk of vinegar infused romaine on ricotta (Ricotta!?!?) cheese with almonds. Have they never heard of salad? The spare rib seemed prepared by one who heard of barbecue but never tasted it. The wagyu beef was perhaps the dryest meat i have ever tried while the desserts were nearly comical. Shall i add that everything came out luke warm at best? Tu summarize this was singularly our worst dining experience in Bucks County. Please avoid at all costs.

Yelp
Place is amazing. They had possibly the best pasta dish I've ever had. Not one underwhelming item.

Yelp
Lovely property and nice people. They need to hire someone to clean better and remove clutter when you walk in.

Yelp
Had brunch today. Haven't been there in 3 years. Food is still impeccable! Staff is so friendly and accommodating! Owner always greets us and checks on our experience. Positively love it there!

Yelp
My boyfriend treated me to the Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm for my birthday dinner and it was an incredible experience. The ambiance simply cannot be beat. The grounds are beautiful and the lighting is very cozy and romantic. The food we sampled was nothing short of magic. I ordered the hangar steak and it was definitely top three best steaks of my life. From the taste to the presentation everything was phenomenal. We ordered the side of mushrooms and I don't know what they are doing to mushrooms over there but they were the best I've ever had. The dessert was equal parts gorgeous and delicious. From the minute we stepped out of our car we knew this place was special and we were not disappointed. In my opinion there is no better place to celebrate anything than Barley Sheaf. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Came here for brunch on Sunday with a few girlfriends, the place was gorgeous. The service was excellent so accommodating and friendly! I loved that it was BYOB and the four course brunch menu... the food was absolutely delicious! I will be back here and highly recommend if you want to sit outside with beautiful scenery and great food.

Yelp
This was our first time out since the whole pandemic started and what a treat! We really chose a fantastic place. Well technically it was chosen by my mother in law but I could've said no right? We met here for brunch. You have to make reservations because there's only so much room. Right off the bat I was wow'd by the long drive with shady trees. It really feels like it should be a place in the south. The drive is easy to miss despite the two horse statues out front. Anyway the road leads up to the farm. Small horses, goats, and pigs. You go back through a house onto the back patio area. Plenary of space to maintain a safe distance from other occupants. Also an outdoor bathroom that's very clean. It was very reasonably priced for the amount of food. They started us off with free mimosas. After that you get a first course. I got salmon on a mini bagel. Then you get two 2nd courses! I got salmon eggs Benedict and fried goat cheese with prosciutto. Sooooo good. On top of that you get a desert. A chocolate tart for me. All of this was only $40 a person. Most places are about that these days anyway. Oh and a free chocolate chip cookie when leaving! Of course I had to stop to pet all the animals before leaving. The pigs were my favorite. I'd love to go here again. Also I can't wait to tell my own mother!

Yelp
We chose to stay here because Mark was reassuring over the phone that he and his wife/co-owner Deena have taken all precautions to make their B&B as safe as possible, and this was very true. We stayed in a room with a private entrance, and were able to stay at a time when it hadn't had an occupant for 2 days. Everyone working there wore masks--waiters had full face shields--and we felt safe and relaxed the whole time. The property is stunning--the pictures don't do it justice-- and the food was fantastic. Make a reservation for dinner, though, because they book up quickly! We visited the farm animals, walked along the lake, checked out the pool, and just took in the scenery. Barley Sheaf is also 10 minutes from downtown New Hope, which was super convenient too. Would definitely recommend and stay again!

Yelp
First time back after a year. Food was even better than I remembered. We ate all 3 courses and had no room for the mouth-watering dessert selection. Service remains elegant without being annoying. Our server Judy was both delightfully pleasant and extremely helpful. We sat outside and it was certainly warm enough in their open-sided tent set amidst the gorgeous grounds. It is BYOB which for us is a plus and a rarity among very high-end dining spots. For us, the combination of exquisite food and delightful setting makes this the premier choice for special-occasion dining in Bucks County.

Yelp
It is a truly amazing place and I would highly recommend. The food and the atmosphere are perfect. A Bucks County gem!

Yelp
Their brunch menu and items are excellent, we've never been disappointed, and they are only a short distance from Peddlers Village!

Yelp
Spectacular dinner on Friday night. Each course was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed the soup, salad and scallops. The menu has just changed for this month and well worth a visit. We were a table of four ladies, with lots to talk about, so we really enjoyed a leisurely meal. Service was fantastic and the setting is ideal. I've dined here on many occasions and always enjoy the diversity of the menu and the portion size, you you may enjoy multiple courses. Will return again soon!

Yelp
WOW...I can't believe I haven't posted a review for this amazing bed and breakfast. My wife and I stayed at Barley Sheaf Farm during Thanksgiving of 2017 and once before that and both times it was fantastic. My wife LOVED this place. As for me, I really enjoyed staying here. The inn itself is amazing, and there are all sorts of things to do in the area. I especially enjoyed breakfast and dinner. They have a chef who knows his stuff and is very accommodating -- and my wife is a trained chef and said he is 5 stars, so that should tell you something. When you arrive, the owners, who are two of the nicest people i've ever met, welcome you as if they've known you forever and bring food to your room and even some wine (or champagne, I can't remember) for you to enjoy as you take in the awesomeness of the room you chose. All of the rooms are really tastefully done. Ours had a nice view and the bathroom was large and super clean. There is also a sitting area so you relax with a book or just surf the net on your laptop. Just fantastic in every way. If you are considering a romantic getaway or just happen to be passing near Holicong, PA on your way to somewhere and you have a night or more to spend somewhere, seriously consider staying at the Inn at Barley Sheaf. My wife and I will definitely be back if we are ever in the area, probably this summer. We still have two tickets to the hot air balloon ride that we never used!

Yelp
I was so disappointed with the food. Maybe the very limited menu is due to the pandemic? I ordered the very bland halibut with some sort of muddy sauce that was inedible. It came with mushrooms and no other vegetables. My husband's duck was a little better but I don't care for sweet sauces. I told the waitress I didn't like my entree and she was so concerned and offered to get me something else. In retrospect I should have taken her up on it but hate to be waiting while my husband would be finishing his meal and then have to eat mine alone. Plus the other entree choices weren't that inviting. I ordered carrot soup for an appetizer which had a lot of overpowering garnish--some kind of seeds? Gotta say that was disappointing too. The chocolate pudding cake was very good. I read that a number of others thought the food was bland and I agree. It is pricey for what you get. The waitress and host were very attentive. Maybe the subpar food was due to the pandemic? The setting is so incredible with a gorgeous tree-lined drive but I'm not crazy with the cluttered look of the living room area you walk through to get to the dining area. The first thing you see when you walk in is a tiny bathroom with the door opened. I had been so excited about trying this place out as it's a hallmark setting in Bucks County. So sad that it wasn't better.

Yelp
Open Table rates this restaurant in the top 100 romantic restaurants in the country and as it was our wedding anniversary, thought it would be a great choice. It is a very pretty place. It's winter time so I think the romantic quotient would be higher in the summer but make no mistake, this place is uber quaint. Top notch ambiance- think quintessential country inn. Service is caring and attentive, which was a good thing since they include the tip in the bill - for a party of two? I don't get that. The food was good. I didn't get to "wow" or even very good. It's very old school and a bit too frilly or "foo foo" for me, but I guess it fits with the personality of the property. It does seem like they put care in to the cuisine, but it was kind of a miss. There was no one under 50 in the place, so that gives you an idea who they cater to. If you're celebrating a special day, this could be a nice choice as long as decor and ambiance is the most important factor.

Yelp
What an absolutely amazing dining experience. The service is excellent. The chef is innovative, ingredients fresh, food beautifully plated. The surrounding grounds are lovely. I was also secretly delighted to be served petit fours at the end of the meal, and given a cookie to go. It is a BYOB! Servers quietly circulated and made sure everything was just seamless. An amazing find and I will be going back! Reservations are not easy to get so plan early!

Yelp
Great food in a beautiful facility and environment just minutes from Doylestown and newtown. The food is always delicious, farm fresh produce and locally sourced where possible. They always seem to have a new seasonal menu that keeps things interesting. I know they do have a b&b setup at the location but we have never stayed there. They have a large post and beam barn that they rent out for different events like weddings and such. The only negative I have is they need an espresso machine! The owners will get a chuckle about that remark.

Yelp
Delicious brunch. Best coffee since Italy. Service perfect despite the fact that they had a wedding going on.

Yelp
If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, and leisurely breakfast, this is your place. This restaurant is in an old but quaint bed and breakfast situated on a beautiful farm in Bucks County. You pay $35.00 per person. When you walk in, you are greeted and quickly seated in a beautiful room with windows all around. In the fall. spring and summer you can see the beautiful grounds that this B and B is on. This is a perfect place for a wedding or baby shower. As you are seated, you are asked if you would like coffee, fresh squeezed juice or a fresh squeezed mimosa. You then may start picking any or all choices on the delicious menu. I started with the most scrumptious home made biscuits and gravy. They were truly out of this world. My next choice was cinnamon French toast. Just as good. Next course was a pork slice with apples. I did not need a knife to cut through it because it was so tender. On our table they also had a fresh basket of pastries. There were so many other good choices and you can order as much as you want. At this point we were beyond full but saw a waiter bring out a peanut butter parfait and a slice of chocolate cake and we decided we had to try them. All I can say is wow! A few more things-there is an open kitchen where you can see everything being made. There is a large barn type conference center next door for bigger affairs. Lastly-they give you a freshly baked cinnamon donut to each person in our party to take home. How can you resist not going?

Yelp
We loved the atmosphere here, along with being with my husband. Sorry to say we were really disappointed with the food...this place had a lot of great reviews so we made reservations...I ordered the ribeye steak medium. It came out well done but that wasn't just the problem...it was so rediculously small and was nothing but fat. Knowing this steak is fatty but I expected at least to have 2 oz of steak that was edible for $42. My husband ordered yellow tail tuna which was a little better but also extremely small...the funny thing was it said it came with scallops we searched the plate for them...haha they were the size of peas... after 5 minutes of eating we left. $92 for dinner and had to go somewhere for dinner after. I don't mind spending money for dinner but that was the most disappointing...the best place for gourmet dining was the William penn inn.

Yelp
How does this place get so many good reviews? The food was sub-par, the service was terrible and we still paid over $100 for it! I was appalled at how bad it was.

Yelp
We recently ate dinner at the Barley Sheaf and had mixed emotions. Pros: Terrific service, above-average food preparation. Cons: the atmosphere was sub-par for the price point ... with a little TLC needed. Again, service was terrific. Food was delicious, but we both thought it was a little bland. For example, I ordered the halibut. The fish itself was perfectly cooked. However, I'd estimate that is was about 4 oz, a bistro portion, and lightly seasoned ... no wow factor. The physical structure itself has amazing potential. However, we were greeted in a beautiful foyer and then led to a sitting area. The sitting area had boxes stacked in the corners as if they were cleaning out a few rooms. The coat hang was a chrome bar that you'd typically find in the basement next to the W/D and very visible. The furniture was random, seemingly from local vintage stores. The restaurant itself was a little nicer but in need of a decorator and fresh paint. We really wanted to like it more but given other choices in the area, we can't really recommend right now.
