The 20 Best Hotels in Charleston, From Harborfront Cottages to Gilded-Age Inns | Condé Nast Traveler

"Though quite close to the city, this inn feels worlds away, and that's the point. Guests enter on a dirt road, past impressive horse stables and sprawling live oaks, through a coded gate, and pull up to a cluster of ivy-covered, design-savvy structures, with the Ashley River just beyond. A pathway connects the inn to the famous "Butterfly Lakes" of America's earliest landscaped gardens, Middleton Place , which clearly is the main draw here. After the daytime tourists have left, you have the grounds to yourself, to chase sheep or tiptoe past groggy juvenile alligators or get lost in a maze of camellias." - Allston McCrady

The Inn at Middleton Place

"How did it strike you on arrival?Though quite close to the city, this inn feels worlds away, and that's the point. Guests enter on a dirt road, past impressive horse stables and sprawling live oaks, through a coded gate, and pull up to a cluster of ivy-covered, design-savvy structures, with the Ashley River just beyond. A pathway connects the inn to the famous "Butterfly Lakes" of America's earliest landscaped gardens, Middleton Place, which clearly is the main draw here. After the daytime tourists have left, you have the grounds to yourself, to chase sheep or tiptoe past groggy juvenile alligators or get lost in a maze of camellias. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Roadtrippers, nature enthusiasts, history buffs, photographers. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.My 2nd floor "Grand Room" faced the river. Floor-to-ceiling wrap-around windows let the outside in. Retractable cedar shutters open by day and close for privacy by night, glowing orange in the evening lamplight. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The inn was no doubt visionary when it opened in 1987, but now feels a tad dated (the VCR player made me chuckle). Rooms are quirky and full of contradictions: huge but with tiny TVs, an eight-foot-wide bathroom counter but only one sink, window blinds that bump into each other when opened, and custom-tiled tubs so large that even a six-foot-tall person could float in them belly up. That said, I slept like a baby in my cushy queen bed, woke up to birdsong, made myself coffee with the in-room Keurig, and pretended I was a mermaid in the tub, with Beekman toiletries to boot. It was a good stay. Wi-Fi is free but sporadic. Being "unplugged" helped me focus on "glamping" (glamorous camping). Room service: Worth it?Guests can eat a hearty breakfast or lunch at the Lake House, a short walk away, or head to the Clubhouse nearby for drinks and snacks (think wine and a game of chess, or beer and croquet). Also on the grounds is The Restaurant at Middleton Place, praised for its southern, seasonal, local fare, which will deliver to the room if you give them enough notice. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The pool isn't heated, but it's a great place to relax in summer, since it's situated on a lower terrace by the river. The Lake House restaurant for lunch and dinner is more stick-to-your-ribs satisfaction than it is artisanal. For a truly indulgent, thoughtfully sourced Southern meal, walk over to The Restaurant at Middleton Place, for the likes of fried quail, toothsome shrimp and grits, Lowcountry Captain, and Hoppin' John. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Not exactly hi-tech, but that’s not the goal here. With the right mindset, you’ll fall in love with this place: peace, quiet, gardens, nature, kayaks, bikes, hammocks strung between oaks and magnolias, a filling southern breakfast, and a stellar fine dining restaurant through the woods. It's worth more than a one-night stay, especially if you want to visit all three adjacent historic plantations (Middleton Place, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, and Drayton Hall)." - Allston McCrady

We stayed in the Ashley River Suite, and there was only one other couple staying at the time we were there. Most hotels won't provide their best service on nights when they have few reservations, but the Inn staff still treated us extremely well! All amenities - cheese and drinks before dinner, full buffet breakfast and personalized service- were set out just for us. The accommodations were beyond compare! The room was one-of-a-kind - beautifully and comfortably appointed, with a wrap-around balcony overlooking the river and grounds. The bathtub was the size of a small swimming pool, with plenty of hot water and the most luxurious bath products and towels! The champagne and chocolates provided a lovely after dinner treat! Such an amazing stay!

Don't miss out on an opportunity to stay at somewhere truly unique for a basic hotel room. ||Although this is our first review of the Inn at Middleton Place, this is actually the 4th time we've stayed here since our honeymoon ten years ago! While there may be other hotels or places to stay that are more conveniently located, or more modern, this place offers an experience that those other establishments can't hold a candle to. Where do we start?||Location:|Beautiful views of the Ashley River, live oaks dripping with Spanish Moss, Magnolia trees, the deafening sounds of cicadas as night, and the delightful sounds of birds in the morning. Not only are the grounds entirely unique to this hotel, they are also situated directly next to Middleton Place, which is included with your stay. Normally over $30 per person, you can freely walk the grounds of Middleton Place any time you choose. In terms of atmosphere and environment, Middleton can't be beat. It should be noted however, that this Inn is off the beaten path, and will require a drive to downtown Charleston and other attractions. However, we have always felt that it was worth the trade off.||Amenities:|The rooms are unlike any other hotels you'll ever stay in. Hardwood floors, other features accented by wood and oak, wooden shutters on wraparound windows, a classic feature offering amazing views of the grounds and River. Newly remodeled bathrooms include a rainfall showerhead and modern countertops and floor. Bed linens are white, clean, and crisp. Housekeeping does a great job of refreshing the room each day. For colder months, there is also a wood burning fireplace in each room (but we are always here in the summer so haven't used this feature). ||FREE breakfast is offered daily, and is the best breakfast we've ever had at any hotel in our lives. No joke. Restaurant quality place settings, mood music, and a breakfast buffet that would rival any popular eating establishment. Bacon, eggs, empanadas, waffles, and the best cheese grits in town. Great coffee, fruit, cereal, and many juices. Not to mention, the breakfast area overlooks a South Carolina marsh, with beautiful views even as you wake up. ||Sidenote: The grounds, while beautiful, may be difficult for physically disabled folks to navigate. For us, we enjoy walking and being outside, so this was a perfect fit. ||Every time we have visited Charleston, we felt as though our stay at the Inn at Middleton Place was an integral part of our experience. Everyone who loves this city should give this place a try at least once. You won't regret it!

This hotel offers a truly charming Southern experience. Nestled within a beautiful property, it provides a tranquil escape surrounded by nature. Wake up to the sounds of birdsong, rustling leaves and enjoy the sight of beautiful flowers. The property itself is beautifully landscaped with ancient oak trees, colorful flower gardens, a tranquil pond. The hotel's architecture and decor reflect classic Southern charm, creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a peaceful getaway or a base for exploring the surrounding area, this hotel offers a delightful blend of comfort and natural beauty. Imagine sipping your morning coffee on a porch swing, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Southern countryside. It's the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature.

My husband and I had a wonderful 7-day stay at the Inn — easily the best decision of our trip. The room had a cozy scent of burned wood, beautiful views of the lake, and thoughtful daily cleaning with quality toiletries and bottled water in the fridge. The bed and closet were a bit small for two, and there were some bugs on the exterior windows, but that’s to be expected when surrounded by nature. Breakfast was delicious and consistent, with a nice variety: eggs, bacon, grits, fruit, cereal, yogurt, pastries, and even gluten-free toast and English muffins for my celiac husband — a big plus! We also loved the happy hour cheese board and the nightcap at the lodge. The staff were fantastic — warm and attentive. The gardens were stunning, with lakes, sheep grazing freely, and even a few alligators. The Inn also thoughtfully honors its harsh history with slavery through stories, displays, and tours that promote reflection and remembrance. We highly recommend this place — peaceful, beautiful, and rich in history.

Beautiful, modern hotel. Outdoor pool available. Rooms have very nice two head showers. Each room has a fireplace available for use in the winter. The stay included a garden tour and breakfast. The gorgeous gardens are within walking distance and fun to explore. We would definitely stay again!

this place is amazing! Beautiful scenery and an overall zen experience. Wonderful grounds, breakfast and room. We were here 29 years ago on our honeymoon and will not wait that long again to have such a relaxing getaway.

Beautiful, serene get away! This was so much more than I expected. The grounds are gorgeous; plan time to stroll a few hours a day. The exquisite architecture of the lodging is a wonderful change from hotels. The room is perfectly minimal. Don’t be discouraged by this, it was incredibly inviting and cozy. The wall of windows allowed you appreciate the view from your room. The complimentary breakfast at the Lake House was quite a spread! Dinner at Middleton Place was delicious! You will want to go more than once for the food and the view. It was not crowded which added to the peaceful feel of the stay.

I had to edit this review because of my return visit. My husband and I returned for our 21st anniversary. We stayed at the inns suite on our wedding night. We came back to another room. The first impression coming up to our steps were two huge banana spiders. We walked into a cozy room with a huge fire smell which was fine. It reminded me of camping. Later that evening we walked back from our dinner from the trail mostly in the dark thankfully we had our phone flashlights. It was stressful during dinner that we knew we had to walk the trail back in the dark with ample lighting through a trail with swamp on both sides. Around 12am my husband was laying in our bed reading WITH THE LIGHT ON and a giant cockroach crawled onto his FACE. He jumped up and hit it several times before killing it. We packed up to check out and drive home. No one from the hotel has called us to talk to us about our early checkout. We will never go back. They had in their records that it was our anniversary and no one mentioned it the entire night. We also had a complimentary breakfast that we obviously missed out on. I will say if you want to stay here you must be a fan of glamping. I would say they don’t do a good job of spraying for bugs. There was no reason for a spider to be hanging in a bulb of a light in the room. That didn’t bother me as much as the roach. The positives were the happy hour snacks and the bartender.

Yelp
My husband and I recently stayed here. We've lived and traveled all over the world and this hotel is a new very favorite spot!! If you're looking for a constant luxury feel... go downtown bc this isn't your spot. However, if you're looking for peace and quiet, an abundance of charm, gorgeous walking trails, easy access to drinks and games, and an epically fun fireplace in the room... this place is absolute perfection!! This inn sort of felt like a low country cabin. The gardens are beautiful... lots of hammocks and chairs fill the property to sit and enjoy the view. We truly adored this spot and will be back! If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of CHS, this is a GREAT choice! The free buffet was the best one I've ever seen. Cheese grits were amazing. As an added plus, the massive windows that fill the inn make you feel like you're always enjoying the surroundings. Brilliant architecture. Really cannot say enough good things about this place. 10/10

Yelp
A hidden gem! Award winning architecture with a tranquil stay. Sunsets along the river are amazing.

Yelp
Anyone that has left negative reviews is just a Karen in my opinion. The basic room is gorgeous and spacious(for a hotel room!). VERY clean. The products provided are local. Really liked the open yet private concept of the bathroom. Perfect for a couple(but probably not ideal for a family, etc.) They even provide Middleton Blend K-cups. Plenty of space to put your open luggage. Pool towels provided! Happy hour was very nice. Great drinks and the live music was wonderful. Charcuterie provided was simple but good. Try the pickled okra and pimento cheese! Breakfast was very good. Cheesy grits, real bacon and pure maple syrup jars were my highlights. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the grounds and felt the walk to the restaurant was not "long". I wouldn't wear heels on the walk but the inn specifically states this(as it seems others have had an issue). We stayed here for two nights to get away from the hustle and bustle. The semi-submergence in nature drew me in and was idyllic after an army graduation we attended prior.

Yelp
This is an absolutely beautiful property. The room, acreage, staff, tours, livestock, and light show were all phenomenal.

Jane S.

Yelp
Beautiful property with little to no service. Short-handed at check in. Difficult to get main phone answered. MUST have a car to get around very large property as staff do not assist with drive or bags. Had problems getting basic amenities (such as washcloths) and had problems with safe in room. For the price, there should be much more and better service.

Yelp
We stayed here during our visit to Charleston recently and this place ended up being cheaper than staying in downtown. It's about a 30 min drive from downtown and an easy one so not bad if you want a quiet stay. Middleton place is gorgeous but more like landscaping rather than botanical gardens. Lots of flora but not a ton of flowers. You get free breakfast and free passes to Middleton place with your stay so it's nothing much for you to worry about The breakfast is actually good! Probably one of the best complimentary breakfast buffets I've seen. They have access for kayaking, they have horseback riding and more The grounds are huge & we didn't see it all. They also have some outdoor games & a restaurant where they give you discounts during happy hour and a complimentary night cap. We didn't partake bc we went to downtown but it sounded cool. The room was great. It's so unique looking and so much light! One of our windows was broken but the temperature stayed fine & we were high up so nothing crawled in the shower space is really big but hard to get into because it has a wide ledge so be careful. Could see this being an accessibility issue Not much privacy from whoever is in the room with you fyi and also if everyone has their windows open, hello neighbors! We enjoyed our stay & thought the place was quaint & welcoming

Yelp
This is a great place to stay if you're looking for something a little quieter and you enjoy natural beauty and history. My husband and I both enjoyed Middleton plantation, the restaurant, and the views. The lounge area is nice and the staff is fairly friendly. I thought the room was beautiful, floor to ceiling windows and a waterfall showerhead. Looks like it's had some updates since previous reviews as it did not seem outdated to me. Unfortunately the pool was closed while we were there which really put a damper on the trip but it was due to unforseen circumstances and the staff was super apologetic. If the pool was open this might've been a perfect trip. Breakfast was fabulous, there are great walking trails, and there's lots of animals to see!

Yelp
Where to begin? First, I gave two stars because of the beauty and history that Middleton offers but honestly that's about it... the rest is about one star worthy. Also, we are not the complaining type but after this experience want to warn people of our experience. We received a gift certificate to stay at the Inn. Instead of taking our credit card for incidentals only (as most places do and then reimburse upon checkout), when we checked in they charged us for the two night stay. We questioned this and they reassured us that we would be reimbursed upon checkout. When we checked out, they charged us for ANOTHER night. Y'all, that is $900 in charged and we had a gift certificate that covered the whole stay! We called three times and have been repeatedly told they "would take care of it". Only one person apologized and acknowledged the mistakes they made and we were even hung up on by one of the hotel staff on one of the calls. One person just kept saying, just call your credit card company and they will sort it out. It is now 4 days after checkout and we still haven't been completely reimbursed. Aside from the horrible customer service, the room was musty and needed to be aired out. There were some little bits of pollen and debris on the towels that we picked off. It looked like someone dropped the towels outside when they were changing them out and just never shook them off. The tv is small in the room but the ambiance is supposed to look quaint and provide relaxation. They are doing some remodels and updates so hopefully that will help. The Pool was disgusting and didn't look like anyone had kept up with it all winter but it should be looking good by April in South Carolina because often times it is plenty warm to sit by the Pool. Breakfast is ok. Pretty standard for a hotel stay. Grits, eggs, bacon, etc. In my opinion , if coming to visit, stay somewhere else and do a tour of the gardens separately.

Yelp
We really loved this Inn. It's not like any other place we have stayed. It's cozy/nice but rustic too. Loved being next to the river and among trees. Ask for a room facing the river. Or, you can just walk outside and walk along the river. The free tour of the grounds down the road is stunning. The views are amazing. Really can't wait to go back.. a few times.

Yelp
I found a Groupon deal for this romantic place. Between the pics online and the ok reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor, I figured let's give it a try when we are in the Charleston area. Check in was smooth. Headed to the room, maybe it's the time of year, maybe the weather, or maybe most of the photos on the website for the inn were taken when it was built. Nothing great at all and the place looked run down. We sent pics and even movies to friends who asked where the hell we were staying. One asked if we were on the set for a horror movie. Now into the room, the smell hit us. There is a fireplace with a tag that says out of service. I doubt it's been used for months. The entire room smelled overwhelmingly like a bonfire or fireplace but we can live with that. The bathroom is strange the combination, the shower and tub was like nothing I had ever seen before. I wouldn't consider it a tub nor would I ever consider laying in there and using it. We went to check out the happy hour, its essentially a small bar and the girl working was very nice and happy to answer any questions. We walked down to the pool area and and there were a few other couples which we chatted with. We made dinner reservations as we were not going to drive from the property. Some issues with the room, we had to sweep a spider down the drain when showering. We took a walk over to the gardens which were nice and walking around the river and checking out the live oak trees was neat. I couldn't believe all the alligators laying near the water either. Walking back after dinner was definitely spooky as the path was poorly lit and uneven ground. Thank God we had cell phones with good lights. I did read a review where they said each room had a flashlight which we were never able to find. Waking up in the morning we found a very long millipede type of creature scurrying across the bathroom floor take a look at the picture I posted. I really wanted to love this stay and facility but it wasn't for us. I have stayed in cabins tents and done a lot of camping this place is not romantic and isn't a resort.

Jonathan S.

Yelp
This is a wonderful, unique place that we have been coming to for years. We've stayed in the winter, spring, summer, and fall and found it provides different but beautiful year round scenery. The architecture is stunning and unique, with friendly staff and great food. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the Charleston area.

David W.

Yelp
We booked a room for three adults and were told that there would be an airmattress for the third adult. What we got was a child's size airmattress. The third person is short- about 5'3" tall, yet her feet hung over the end of the mattress. Bad enough, but the mattress had a slow leak, by 4 am she was sleeping on the hard floor. They also failed to pad the airmattress to insulate it, and it was cold on that floor. We asked for a larger room with three beds, or a second room, which I even offered to pay for. But they were full, and we were stuck. The next morning they gave us a 20% discount on the room. That was not adequate given that 1/3 of our party did not have a bed as promised. Aside from this major disappointment, the wine and cheese hour was about like what you get at a highway motel such as Best Western. Very substandard for this price point. Finally, in the restaurant, they kept my credit card and I didn't realize it until a day later when we were 100 miles away. I called the office to get some help on this, and they said the restaurant is separate. No help from Middleton Place on that either. We are frequent travelers and pretty flexible on quality of accommodation, but at this price we expected them to cover the bases far better than they did. The rooms are a long walk or short drive to the restaurant, and the parks are a drive away, so there's no benefit gained by staying on site. Would not consider ever staying again.

Yelp
I really enjoyed spending Thanksgiving here this year. It has a great location and all the staff were friendly and professional. The Inn itself was wonderful as I really enjoyed its architecture and thought it to be very comfortable. It was wonderful to wake up and take a stroll around its grounds and enjoy the beautiful environment. It was so peaceful and listening to the birds in the early morning hours was really relaxing. Then to visit the plantation gardens which is just a quick walk from the Inn was special. Enjoyed the breakfasts, afternoon cocktails, and of course the Thanksgiving meal on the plantation. If you want a peaceful place to relax and recharge this is it.

Mary G.

Yelp
Dirty, smelly, creepy. Beware! 4-star hotel prices for roadside motel accommodation. I called to inquire about a charge that showed up on my credit card statement after I had already prepaid a whopping $430+ for a one-night stay. The "manager" was flippant, sarcastic, dismissive and downright unprofessional. Seems that the room I requested on the ground floor was more expensive than the room I had originally booked and paid for. Bad accommodations--and no one in management seems to care.

Yelp
First of all, try not to arrive in the dark. There's not a lot of landscape lighting which was awkward for us. Our room was beautiful, fireplace, two person tub/shower. I loved the Inn. It's quiet and pretty and a break from the real world. We did not try the restaurant so I have no opinion there Lucy helped us tremendously. She is a true asset and her smile and can do attitude made our first night!!!

Steve L.

Yelp
Amazing. Great views and excellent service. Happy Hour at the Lodge is the best. Also take time to tour the plantation. So much history and beautiful landscapes. Go back in time and see how our country came to be.

Yelp
Much better then expected. Their website does not do this place justice. Not a typical hotel, but rather a quiet, cozy inn w wood burning fireplace in your huge room. Gorgeous property. Fabulous staff. 5 star restaurant. Pet friendly put it over the top. Ignore any negative reviews because this place will exceed your expectations if you are looking for a romantic getaway. Nature all around with acres of trails, gardens, river, hammocks, bike trails, farm animals, etc

Yelp
I have stayed at some really nice places in Charleston, but this was my first visit to The Inn At Middleton Place. I gave this place 5 stars for many reasons, but I will warn you that this place is not for everyone. And, even though I loved it, it will not always be my first choice because it is in a dark & secluded area.... and it is a bit of a drive to get to the beach or downtown Charleston from here. But overall, I was very pleased with my experience. I booked online well in advance of my visit, and was a little anxious to make sure the reservation was secured. Shortly after booking, I got a confirmation email with information about the Inn and the activities available there. About a week before our visit, I got another confirmation email from them. So, when we checked in, they had our room ready for us. They also had a gift bag waiting for our dog Izzy. It contained a little chew toy, a bag of what looks & smells like handmade carob dog treats, a travel water bowl, and wipe ups. The Inn was built in the 80s but the decor and the architecture do not scream 80s to me. I love the tall concrete & glass buildings covered with vines to give it a sort of retro look. The rooms are a mix of rustic with sort of modern bathrooms. It sounds a little odd but it works. I love all the windows with wooden shutters. The room also had a fireplace in it which would be great for a winter visit. The bathtub/shower is huge - but warning to those with mobility issues, it is not going to be easy for you to get in or out of the tub. While it is certainly rustic, I thought that the only really dated thing about the room was the tv - but I certainly wasn't going to be sitting around watching tv, so who cares! As for service, they really have thought of all the details to make sure your stay is pleasant. In addition to providing plenty of bikes for the guests to use, they also have umbrellas outside of each room and outside of the Lakehouse in case you need them. The employees we encountered were all very personable and helpful. We loved Ms. Orcelea (sp?) at the Lakehouse - she was so friendly and helpful when we went to breakfast. (She said she's been there 19 years, and I hope she's still there when we go back!) And Mark in the Lodge was absolutely wonderful. He was helpful, friendly, entertaining, and was like our own private conceierge when we asked for suggestions about local businesses. We really enjoyed talking with him during the manager's reception and at other times when we went back to the lodge for food or beverages. Because we were in town for a wedding and had lots of wedding-related events planned elsewhere, we did not have a chance to dine at the restaurant at Middleton Plantation. On my next visit I hope to do so. The "free" breakfast they serve at the Lakehouse consisted of breads, muffins, fruit, yogurt, granola, juice, coffee and tea. But they also offer eggs, grits, potatoes, and breakfast meats cooked to order a la carte. If you happen to be on the grounds at lunch time or in the evening and you want a light bite - they serve sandwiches and wraps over at the Lodge. Unfortuantely, the offerings are a bit limited, but it is nice to not have to leave the property to find a quick & casual bite to eat. (The restaurant over at the Plantation is apparently upscale/pricey.) All in all, I was extremely pleased with our visit and look forward to going back for a future visit.

Yelp
This place was unbelievable. It's impossible to express how beautiful and relaxing this place is. The customer service is amazing, the happy hour in the lobby is a huge perk, and there's so many amenities it's almost overwhelming. Pool, kayaking, walking trails, wildlife, it's all there. You're a 4 minute walk away from Middleton Place, you're right next to Magnolia Gardens, and you're close to Charleston without being too close. I've stayed twice and each time was incredible. Me and my wife made a quick video review so you can see what I'm talking about - https://vimeo.com/257777992/37ca815eb2

Yelp
We stayed here for two nights for my cousin's wedding and absolutely adored our time here. The layers of history to peel back are inconceivably many. The significance of the gardens and their upkeep relative to the formation of our country, the Middleton connection to our constitition, international affairs, and the concession during the civil war make the gardens even more meaningful. Without knowing any of the background, you could admire the landscaping on it's own, although understanding the ties to french landscaping help contextualize the right angles, the purposeful hedging and aesthetically pleasing placement of bird baths and statues. We did the garden tour to learn of the history and upkeep of the gardens, we did the slavery tour to understand how enslaved africans played a pivotal role in this- the juxtaposition of the ugliness of slavery but the beauty they created is something causing pause. Everything here makes you think while also giving you the respite to enjoy nature. Such a breathtaking venue for a wedding. See the pictures I will post!

Yelp
My husband and I wanted a quiet weekend to disconnect. We booked a Riverside room at the Inn. We were excited to be able to access the Middleton Place Plantation and Gardens and we also booked dinner at the Middleton Place Restaurant. When we booked the room we were informed that most of the amenities at the Inn were closed; the Lakehouse and Lodge. When we arrived we figured out this was due to the beginning of renovations going on. Since we wouldn't have access to the Lodge specifically, we were told a complimentary bottle of wine and cheese platter would be in our room. When we arrived in our room, we were very disappointed. Not only was there no bottle of wine or cheeses there but the room was very old. Ripped bed quilt, stained ceilings, and moldy bathroom. Our room was on the second floor and did not have the wooden blinds that you see on the website. No biggie, but the glass windows were very dirty. The bathroom was extremely dated. Toilet was very low to the floor. Sink area did not seem very clean. When my husband called to inquire about the wine and cheese; the receptionist had no idea. She asked him to call someone at the Lodge. We left a message and decided to head over to the Middleton Plantation and Gardens. The gardens were exquisite! Absolutely gorgeous. There was a quick path to walk from the Inn to the Gardens during the day. Registration suggested we go straight to the Visitor Center to reserve a time for the House tour. Everything about the plantation and gardens was worth it. A must see if you're in the area. While enjoying the gardens we heard back from a manager at the Lodge who informed us that due to it being closed, we were unable to have a cheese platter but they could give us a bottle of champagne. When we returned to our room that evening, the bottle was nicely chilling in the fridge. She was very apologetic. We enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Middleton Place Restaurant. Walking the path at night though, was extremely dark and challenging. No lighting. Bring a flashlight! In our room, that evening we did enjoy a nice wood burning fire, although the logs were very damp and took a while to burn. The room was very quiet. Unfortunately, when we woke up the next morning, the ceiling was leaking. When taking a shower it was very old and the fixture hung low. I have no idea what tall people do to shower. The shower also had a very wide ledge, which was dangerous for entering and exiting. Before leaving we strolled over to the Lakehouse where there was a "grab and go'' breakfast. Due to COVID- 19 we were told this was the only breakfast option. This was the most ridiculous breakfast I had ever seen. They were charging people for microwaved JimmyDean sandwiches and toasted bagels. Thankfully, we were served by the same nice manager who sent us the champagne and she comped us our breakfast. When we checked out I informed registration of the room leak, she seemed shocked and very apologetic. Frankly, based on our experience, the rate was excessive. I wanted to love it, being a part of nature was wonderful and the staff was kind, but the room was a huge disappointment. Go to the restaurant and gardens.

Yelp
I'm full of mixed emotions about this place but mostly disappointed first things first if you don't have mosquito spray don't bother going there, they are on the property of Middleton place and you receive free day passes to explore the gardens and the house which is absolutely gorgeous and a great experience but I would have honestly rather payed the £29 for the pass and stayed elsewhere, if your gonna enjoy your nights sleep bring earplugs because you can hear everything from the upstairs and neighbouring rooms, if you have a lot of luggage get ready for a lot of stairs, not to mention the WiFi is the poorest connection I have ever came across that's if it even lets you connect, but that's okay il just put on the tv instead?! Right well if you have binoculars to see it from your bed that's fine BUT IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER RIGHT? ahahaha N O P E I have never seen so many insects in one area in my life I was disgusted with the amount of dead/alive insects in the bathroom, the place hasn't had a good clean in a while and definitely needs an update inside and outside, it's not well light up at all and my elderly father nearly took a bad fall walking the paths on the grounds of the property not to mention who in the hell wants to go kayaking with that many gators in the water!?!?! I'm glad I'm only staying one night to say the least on the upside gorgeous area and comfy beds i was truly looking forward to this place but there website photos are very misleading, for the price I would expect a better quality so I've taken some photos so I can save you the trouble of visiting yourself

Yelp
Oh my gosh just stay here. They are the nicest most thoughtful business I have ever dealt with and what you get with your stay (after hours access to the plantation and more during non-COVID times) makes the price of the hotel per night so worth it. We have stayed here 6 times now and it such a lovely place. I left a review a few years ago being nit picky about the bathrooms being a bit outdated but you know what? These rooms are so unique and different it doesn't matter. It's just a wonderful place to stay. I casually mentioned a special event as I was making our arrangements for the weekend and they made sure we were greeted with something special when we got In our room. You feel like you're disconnected from the world here. It's like being in another time and place. I cannot speak highly enough of this place.

Yelp
Ok. So I booked this hotel because a friend is getting married on the property. The rooms on the main part of the property seem beautiful but the ones off property are disgusting. I had a reservation for one of the rooms at the DAYTON and the room smelled like mold and mildew, the walls looked like they had water damage and the room seemed like it had been vacant for years. It is SO outdated. As we walked up, the cleaners had left the cleaning supplies outside of the room on the gravel floor. I would NOT recommend staying here unless it's on the main part. It's my mistake because the price was low when I booked. I should have known.

Yelp
I'm a local and live in Charleston. This Christmas a friend and I pondered going to the Greenbrier in West Virginia but then thought about the two day drive and decided to stay at the place we love best ! Middleton Place ! The staff was fabulous, the dinner delicious and the full moon on or walk to the restaurant even better ! We will be back next Christmas for another enchanting stay !

Yelp
The Inn At Middleton Place is one of my favorite hotels in the Charleston area. The location is awesome as it has a view of the marsh and river. I like the architecture of the hotel and look and feel of everything. Everything here is so peaceful and relaxing and feels like an entirely different experience from everything else in Charleston. There is so much history and so much to see and do while visiting. The staff here is great and does everything necessary to make sure that you have a great visit. I have had a great experience every time I have been there. I look forward to being able to return each time to relax and create more memories. This is an awesome hotel.

Yelp
Wonderful place. The staff were most helpful and kind. We will definitely be returning. The Inn is in need of a some repairs and the grounds could use a little facelift but the plantation is so stunning it doesn't even matter. I can't wait to visit again

Yelp
This place was horrible from beginning to end. Several days prior to my arrival, I called to confirm my reservation. I was rudely met by Debbie on the line, who was one of the most hateful guest services attendants who I've ever spoken to. Furthermore, she confirmed that rooms were available but refused to book my reservation, stating that I should wait until the morning. I travel 3-4 times per month, and I have never encountered such a bizarre issue. Upon arrival, the first services attendants were stale and unapproachable. The attendant provided mediocre information on the property, but did not go out of his way to be helpful in any way. Arriving to the room, it was old, run down, and dirty. The floor had remnants of sand and the carpets were filled with dog hair of past guests. The bathroom was not clean, and the shower had hair of past guests as well. Again, I travel for a living and have never experienced such bad service and accommodations. I will not be back.

Yelp
Experience was mixed. Room and facilities were beautiful. Restaurant delicious. Service poor and handicap accessibility ZERO. We arrived by Uber and cold to walk a block and a half through next train with our luggage. Despite having someone with a chronic knee problem, no golf cart was made available. At various times throughout the stay when we asked for assistance with a golf cart, it was a big deal. There was a nice cocktail lounge and the hostess was great but the front desk did a poor job of explaining the hours and the amenities. At night, virtually no lighting made it very difficult to walk from the restaurant back to the room-- complete darkness!

Yelp
The rooms here are very cozy! Was a romantic place to stay. Our stay included a pass to Magnolia Plantation, it was raining when we stayed so did not get to enjoy that. Loved ALL the windows that the room had. The room also had a fire place and wood so we enjoyed a fire while visiting. They also had a nice building that had board games, fireplace and bar that had plates of snacks. The bar also had good happy hour prices on drinks. The free breakfast was pretty limited on choices but was still tasty and the view was gorgeous with all the windows. The room had a large bathtub and I was really excited to relax in it however the water was no longer warm by the time it filled up. Otherwise a great stay.

Yelp
The grounds are lovely, but our room at the inn was absolutely filthy, the bed uncomfortable, and there was no resolution or customer service from the front desk employees. We travelled across the country and arrived near midnight. The disappointing customer service started from The beginning of our arrival, when the receptionist was unable to tell us where we could get food or water in any direction. (Not even water was available at hotel at that hour). But by far the worst part of our experience was our room. The room looked nothing like the one line photos, it was Tiny and the word rustic does not do it justice. It was also absolutely filthy. It was obvious no attempt had ever been made to clean or shake out the rugs or bath mat, and the hard wood floor was filled with rocks and dirt. The moment i stepped out of the shower onto the bath mat my feet were covered in hair and dirt. I swept the room and piled the rugs in the corner and used all of the towels to clean the floor. When I asked for new towels and explained the situation at the front desk there were no apologies. The next day after suffering through an uncomfortable bed and flat pillows we decided to check out early. Again I explained the situation to the front desk and received no apology, just a full bill, nearly 600 dollars for 2 nights. Absolutely atrocious customer service and cleanliness. Stay elsewhere.

Yelp
3 stars for the lodging, but 5 stars for the property. The grounds are beautiful! Situated on the water, the scenery is spectacular. I was so excited to drive through the secured gate and see the equestrian area with so many beautiful horses! When I pulled up to our building, I was still so excited as the exterior looked very cool with a rustic/modern feel.....and then I went inside my room....picture a balloon full of air deflating before your very eyes....that's what I felt like. There's SO much potential for these rooms to be uber chic but sadly it's more campy/lodgy than I was expecting or wanting. It was very dated but comfortable and clean. It doesn't 'go' with the rest of the resort....the common areas appear newly renovated and modern and as I said above, the grounds are impeccable. Perhaps a reno is in the works?... I think it's a great place for a long weekend stay with family since they give you a print out of all the acitivies going on throughout the day. If you're looking for a romantic weekend getaway, I'd drive a litte further into downtown Charleston.

Yelp
Room was stupid filthy like it hadn't been cleaned in 3-4 stays used shampoo bottles and pubic hair all over the toilet. We'd been talking about staying here a long time and what an incredible letdown. When i went to the desk the young lady completely blew me off like it was no big deal my room was in said condition.

Yelp
Words don't even do the grounds justice. It was so peaceful, and there were so many nooks and crannies that were so breathtaking. Walking over to the Stableyards we were met by all sorts of animals and the staff was happy to answer our questions and provide us info on them. The bedding was SOOOO comfortable and it was perfect for curling up at night (or during a nap). If I had any wish, it would simply be to not have pine on pine on pine, and to have a vending machine or something on the grounds for those post-9p snackers.

Yelp
All went well at the pre-wedding food tasting. However, where were the appetizers we tasted? All we saw at the wedding were deviled eggs. Same with the main course. Not enough food was provided and people were just plain hungry. And..the planner was MIA. My son and daughter in law were extremely disappointed. The rest of us knew that the this was an absolute ripoff.

Yelp
Middleton Place Plantation in itself is an absolute must if you're visiting Charleston. However the Inn at Middleton, while set in a great location and beautiful mid century modern architecture, lacks good management. Hospitality was under whelming! Out room was not ready at the time of check in and they were not even remotely apologetic about it. So much potential and yet so lacking. Review to keep left to do is if it's if it's

Yelp
My mom and I just had a wonderful stay at Middleton Place Inn. It's hard to accurately sum up its vibe in a single word. Yes, it's a bit rustic because you're walking around on dirt paths in a very woodsy setting. But it's also so serene and beautiful. But it's refined rustic. The exterior of the buildings reminded me of Frank Loyd Wright and mission-style furniture--very geometric and designed to be in tune with nature. Inside the rooms though, it felt more like a more like a Scandinavian retreat, with all of the light-colored cypress wood and stone bathroom with European-style tub. The floor-to-ceiling windows are gorgeous and I love that you could open just the top shutters to maintain some privacy at night. We stayed in a Grand River View room on the ground floor. If you're coming with kids, the Grand rooms offer the advantage of a couch with pull-out sofa bed and DVD player. Otherwise, it is nice to have the sofa and sitting area in the evening. As far as the amenities in the room, the bed was comfortable with lightweight linens, appropriate for summer. It was great to have a small refrigerator to store drinks in, as well as a charging station to plug into on the desk (especially since I had forgotten the wall part of my charger). But I was surprised the room didn't have a hair dryer anywhere I could find. I thought the bathroom was nice and loved the softer-than-hotel-normal towels. However, I wasn't a fan of the 150 gallon European tub. I think they would be smart to update that. I found it to be all-round uncomfortable--sitting on grouted tile instead if a smooth surface, the hard lines of the shape and the fact that it's so big that after 20 minutes, it still only had about 2 inches of water in it. Contrary to what some reviewers have said though, the tubs aren't filled with mold. As explained on the website, they used black grout, which must have been a trend at the time because I have seen it in a NYC hotel as well. But the coloring is uneven, which I think causes the "mold" confusion. It has faded in some spots over the years while other areas have obviously been retouched. The staff we talked to at check-in, the Lodge and the Lake House were all very gracious. The complimentary Healthy Start breakfast was terrific too--a wide variety of cereals, muffins, yogurt and toppings to choose from. They also have brochures for the farms they get everything from. In case you want to go tour them. But the best part of all is probably the value--with the included admission to the grounds and house both days included in the room price. We literally spent 6 hours touring the place on Sunday and getting a bite to eat in the Garden Market, and we didn't quite see everything or do any of the free outdoor tours or any of the extra activities like horseback riding or kayaking. So you really could spend several days there making the most of it. Bottom line--if you're looking to stay at the usual southern/Charleston-style inn, you'll probably be disappointed. But the Inn at Middleton Place has many unique charms if it's own and I definitely plan to return.

Yelp
Turning on the tap, flushing the toilet, or using the shower fills the room with the stench of rotten eggs. When I called the desk about this at 8pm I was told they would send someone right over to check it out. At 11pm, I was told this is normal for well water and I should just let the water run to get rid of the smell (while making the whole room stink). I've used water from hundreds of wells over the past 50 years. Although some have had high sulfur content, none have been anything like this. The stench is almost bad enough to make me vomit. Unbelievable for a room costing me almost $200. If it wasn't almost midnight I would ask for my money back and go somewhere else. Update: in the morning, the hydrogen sulfide smell coming from the water was even worse than it had been the night before. Just taking a short shower gave me a bad headache. On a positive note, the oatmeal at the complementary breakfast buffet was really good and the manager comp'ed my stay when I checked out. Nonetheless, this is an experience I rather would have missed; I will not be back.Interestingly, the tap water at the Middleton Place Plantation next door is great.

Yelp
We had a great experience here. I'll start by saying half the staff was great...the other half not so much, but we didn't let it spoil the trip. lol Overall, they run a good operation. We couldn't have picked a better week to come...stayed for SIX days...and got rained in for a couple of days which was super romantic (we had the larger rooms there) and then had some great weather too. Rooms were nice. Bummer they wouldn't let us use the fireplace...which was one of the main draws to stay there. I didn't like the "pondmeadow bugs" which are like enormous roaches. We saw 2 in our room during our stay...and although it's normal in the South (we're from FL) it should be more avoidable on the second floor with a bug company that comes and sprays. Luckily they were in the bath tub and easy to take care of. The Lodge is super homey...really cool place. They do a happy hour with free beer/wine/apps. Don't expect the Ritz...it's perfect for what it is...and honestly if you're there for the food and wine you could really go anywhere right? We met some great people down there since it's set up like a big living room...you grab some food, sit, and make some friends. The have games at the Lodge, we found ourselves there on a rainy night playing games and it was super awesome! The grounds over at Middleton Place are just beautiful! We saw a TON of gators when we walked through the trails and gardens which was neat and freaky at the same time...lol. But they don't bother you as long as you leave them alone. Beautiful peacock on the grounds. He was kind enough to spread his feathers for us...super pretty! We didn't use the pool b/c it rained a bit and so when the weather was nice we wanted to go explore Charleston, but it is a large pool close to the lodge and the water was a great temp (dipped our toes in). If you're looking for a quiet retreat, this is a cool place to go!

Yelp
Our stay at the Inn has been sweet and memorable. Our family of 5 easily shared the spacious queen room. The bed was very comfortable. Our three boys really enjoyed the pool. It is beautiful overlooking the Ashley River. We can't say enough about the charm of this Inn. We've already recommended it to many friends and family. The complimentary breakfast hit the spot each morning. It consists of sweet rolls, oatmeal, cereals, and yogurt. There are hot plate options at an additional price. The coffee is wonderful. We plan to return!

Yelp
Was so excited to stay here as part of my friend's wedding weekend, our group had sold out the entire property. Going down the list: 1) Charged $200+/night under the "group rate", when any other weekend online is much less. This supposed "discount" is obviously offered after hiking up the rates knowing they have a large wedding booked. 2) Arrived in my room at 1AM to find I had no hot water after running for 15+ minutes, and the next day was cut off completely for almost 2 hrs due to maintenance on the well. So understand you are getting smelly well-water, and if you want it hot it's on a first-come, first-serve basis (as it was explained to me that my hot water issue was simply because other guests must have used it all up). 3) Service is atrocious, and they will up-charge you at any chance. Manager woke me at 10:45am on a Saturday by aggressively banging on my door, wanting to speak to me about my dog. This is a pet-friendly hotel, but they charge a pet fee. I explained my dog is an ESA (which I have paperwork), but wanted to charge me anyway. When I said he's also a service dog (for which there is no paperwork under the law), he accused me of lying and charged me anyway which is ILLEGAL. This after I complained about no hot water (which was noted from when I called the desk the night before), he offered no resolution and blamed me for not being patient enough to wait for the water to heat. Other friends had to check-out because they were not provided a crib after having requested one in advance, and none were available. Another guest was forced to stay in a 2nd-floor room even after having requested ground-floor due to hip issues and not being able to take the stairs. I even emailed the hotel manager (who was out of the office for the entire sold-out wedding weekend), and days later still no response. 4) Beware this is a VERY remote location! This could be charming, except food runs on limited hours as does the gift shop which has almost nothing. So if you need anything from soda to food to sundries, and especially if you're coming in late, you must have a car or wait for Uber to go to the nearest stores which are 7+ miles away. The dirt roads and paths have almost zero lighting so you must carry a flashlight after dark, and the property is basically abandoned at night except for one front-desk person and security at night (which you can only call, they lock the reception area), 5) Rooms badly need an update. The towels that aren't dirty, are dingy. For $200+/night, no bathrobes or slippers, no cotton swabs, no comforter on the bed (just a thin cover), windows do not actually operate/open to get fresh air, has a fridge but no mini-bar (there are a couple bottles of complimentary drinking water). The lights/fans in the bathroom are flickering and covered in dust, tiles are moldy and cracked. There was a dirty broom in the clothes closet, and the ironing board was stained. The doors are also old and operate with a key, yet will lock automatically behind you (which they don't warn you about). TV is maybe a 24" tucked into the corner, wifi is spotty and drops frequently. Could handle most of the above if the comfort level was reflected in the price, and at least there was an attempt at good service, which most employees were nice but when you have an issue the management is unaccommodating and rude beyond belief. Stay at your own risk!

Yelp
Quaint, romantic ambiance. Complimentary healthy breakfast in the morning and beer and wine in the evening. Plenty of walk and bike paths. We also got entrance to the nearby Middleton Place and the House Museum tour. The room had a nice rustic feel with a wood burning fireplace. Only downside was the water had an odd smell so we avoided drinking it. However, there was complimentary water in the room.

Yelp
The good: 1. Large rooms with comfortable beds and all expected amenities. 2. Beautiful grounds. 3. Very quiet. 4. Access to Middleton Place. 5. The humongous tubs (why black grout though?). 6. The staff is generally friendly and helpful. The meh: 1. The Lodge offers cocktails with good local craft beers but pretty lousy house wine. 2. The only lunch/dinner restaurant is The Lodge and the menu is limited to a few sandwich/salad type offerings. All of which are mediocre to worse. 3. The complimentary breakfast buffet is pretty limited. You can order off a menu, but the food is mediocre and the service is very slow. The bad: 1. There are some serious disabled access issues. The walkways consist of a thin layer of gravel over sandy dirt. If you use a mobility scooter, you're going to bog down. The tubs are not accessible and there are no walk-in showers. 2. The guest restrooms in the Lodge are not accessible, as you have to go down a flight of stairs. 3. They make no bones about the lack of accessibility. As I discovered after I arrived, the website bluntly states: "When it rains, there will be mud. We are not apologizing for these things and hope that the jungle we offer here is more ascetically pleasing then the concrete one you face elsewhere." (I wonder how that'd hold up in court If they get sued under the ADA?) 4. I could not get on to the wi-if network and neither could anybody else in our group.

Yelp
Location and landscape was beautiful! It was around a 30-min drive to downtown Charleston and very close to Drayton Hall and Magnolia Gardens. Hammocks and benches were placed all around the lake front. The room itself was cozy and felt like a little cottage. It did have a musty smell and could have used a dehumidifier. The TV was small and some of the channels fuzzy, but do you really come here to watch TV anyways?! The plantation was a short walk away which is included in the hotel stay. A must see! The bathroom door did not close. Not the biggest issue, but something that should be fixed. The complimentary breakfast was great and the service was friendly but slow at times. The breakfast for additional purchase on the other hand was not great. The potatoes were not cooked all the way and the portions were small for the price. If you are going to pay for breakfast I would go someplace else. The nightly "happy hour" was great! The selection of beer was from a local brewery which was nice. They even served light refreshments. Overall the stay was great and we would come back.

Yelp
We purchased the groupon special to stay 1 night at this plantation. After looking at the pictures online, we purchased the groupon and made our reservation. We arrived a little before check in and drove through the property to the gate. We went in the office and checked into our room within a few minutes. After getting our key, they showed us on a map what building our room was located in. My first thoughts were, where are going? The buildings where our room was located was far from the main gate. These buildings do not resemble a hotel or plantation whatsoever. Upon opening the door to our room, I was a bit disappointed. It smelled like a fireplace and had a cabin feel to it, not hotel. The room is surrounded by windows that have wooden blinds on them ( from the floor to ceiling). The bathroom was weird, it had a make shift "tub and shower combo" that had a huge spider on the ceiling. The ceilings were short so Im not sure what a tall person would do in there. I don't think anyone would actually lay in it as it's not your standard tub. Please see my pics that I uploaded. In the middle of the night my husband found a huge cennapede crawling on the floor and also killed a bug on the counter earlier in the night. The bed was a full size bed and the tv was very very small. We decided to eat at their place on the grounds so we didn't have to drive anywhere. We walked to dinner by taking the scenic path the girl at check told us about. We set out when it was still light outside. We were walking along the path that led to the Butterfly ponds. There on the grass were live alligators! NO warning at all... we walked the opposite side of the pond as them and continued on to dinner. We arrived at the restuarant and were seated within a few minutes. The menu is small but they had a little bit of everything. The fried chicken was very good. After dinner we set out back to our room. It is dark and we took the short cut path back to the room. This path was barely lit. They had laterns on the ground but not very often. Thankfully we both had our cell phones and could use the flashlight apps to light our way back. This path was very uneven and had tree roots sticking up in areas. I would be worried for older people attempting to walk in the pitch dark on this path. Once back, we decided to take a game from their game room to play in the room since the tv was small and didn't get very good reception. I would do your research so you know exactly what you are getting and you don't end up disappointed like we did.

Yelp
This was such a wonderful get away. We drove from Ny to get some relief from the cold weather and snow, and to see some greenery, and feel warm sun. And that we got. The grounds at the Inn are a nature lovers dream. Honestly! The view from the room is though a full wall of windows floor to ceiling. So when you are not out on the hammock watching the moss sway from the lovely oak trees, you won't miss seeing the gorgeous view. Hiking all around the area is so great. You don't have to get in the car and drive somewhere to take walks and see birds and trees and flowers. And I loved that so much. Breakfast is included- it was delicious with plenty of choices. The bed was super comfy, the bath tub was gigantic and the water is well water- not the smelly kind- the kind that makes your hair and skin feel so soft. I can't say enough of how I loved being there. We stayed a full week, and wanted to stay longer! We will be back! Hospitality was excellent also! So much to see and do in Charleston. It's an easy 25 min drive away.

Yelp
I am cancelling this reservation- a reservation that I made in October of 2013 all because of the incredible arrogance and mean spirited nature of the staff. I received a call 2 weeks ago from Micheal McDonald to confirm my reservation and he attempted to push me into a different room type of his choosing- when I resisted, he made snide remarks about me not booking directly through the property (their internal reservation site was down at the time) and was so unpleasant in his conversation that I called the General Manager Abigail Martin whose response to me was "she wasn't there" and "she couldn't apologize for something she didn't hear". I stressed to her that I work very hard and this trip with my spouse was for her birthday and I didn't feel comfortable with that response because we may have an incident during our stay and "I didn't hear it so it didn't happen" wouldn't be sufficient. The owner Charles called and was very apologetic and Abigail called back but seemed to be offended that I would have asked to speak to her supervisor and reverted to the same arrogance as before. I informed her of my intention to cancel my reservation because of her attitude and Micheal's attitude and told her I thought she would have handled this issue differently with all of the social media options that consumers have at their disposal- her immediate response- true to character- was "is that a threat?" I assured her it wasn't and politely ended the call. I am cancelling my reservation not because the bed isn't comfortable, not because the ambience isn't refreshing or the breakfast refreshing. I am cancelling my reservation because of rude and inattentive management on 2 levels. Micheal McDonald and Abigail Martin. May the buyer beware.

Yelp
Hands down, the best lodging experience I have ever had. First, if you come to the Inn at Middleton Place expecting the same experience you get at the every Hyatt, Marriott, you name it -- don't come here. If a flat screen tv means that much to you, you should stay at the Comfort Suites. If you want a typically nice but boring hotel room, go for the Holiday Inn. The Inn at Middleton Place dares to be different. Thank Heavens. I love its clean minimalist architectural style that lets the setting do the talking. The huge windows in the room complement this approach by letting you know that you are in a beautiful "place" not just a pretty hotel room. I can't wait to go back when it's colder and I can use the fireplace, sitting in front of those huge windows and ... breathing, Oh, and that's not the best part. The best part is the Middleton Plantation. Outside your door are hundreds of acres of sprawling beauty teeming with wildlife. My girlfriend and I spent two days there and never had to leave the premises for entertainment. We enjoyed relaxing in the gardens, gazing at the river, touring the house, and watching tons of wildlife (I have never been so close to so many gators ever). Throw in a great restaurant, terrific happy hour, horse rides, and kayaks, and you have a wonderful weekend getaway. I wish America had more places to stay like this one.
