The 38 Best Food Movies of All Time | Eater

"A distinguished northern England inn and restaurant included in a food-focused road-trip movie, where meals and long drives through the countryside set the stage for improvised conversation about taste, technique, and the emotional pleasures of eating well; its appearance underscores how destination dining can anchor storytelling about friendship, aging, and appetite." - Eater Staff

Somewhat overwhelmed when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon, to see the hotel extremely busy, however we were swiftly and pleasantly checked into room 7 overlooking the river. The room was beautiful, clean, comfortable, an oasis of calm at a very busy time. We were advised this was a usual Sunday! Fortunately we didn’t see as many people again during our stay. The location and the staff are what sets this place out on its own. The decor, cleanliness food and grounds did not disappoint. If you want to step back in time, with all the modern comforts, this is the place to stay.

We’ve visited here 4 or 5 times across the years - usually in celebration of some family event. We love the location, perched above a bend in the River Hodder with a view down the Trough of Bowland - the North of England at its best. |This was a last minute spontaneous sort of thing and we proudly arrived by bike to the mild astonishment (is that an oxymoron?) of the reception staff. |Our room (in the recently built annex) was lovely and large and pretty magnificent. We had a great stay but …|I must say we were both disappointed by the culinary offerings. Perhaps we were just unlucky at dinner but the potted crab with avocado really didn’t grab me and the pork shoulder was dry and unappealing. My rump of lamb was very nice though if cooked a little pinker it would have been better. |Breakfast was disappointing. Our dishes seemed to have been left out under heaters too long after preparation and lacked moisture and seemed stale. As others have noted there was no fresh fruit which seemed odd for somewhere that fishes in the high end of the market - bit of a contrast with White Lotus I guess. |I must say the staff were all very helpful and pleasant. I did give feedback when checking out and was happy that a reduction to the bill was made without prompt. |We will return but I do hope the kitchen ups its game in the meantime.

We were lucky to arrive just before the lunch menu finished at 2 pm. The ladies at the counter encouraged us to order, which suited us. The staff are attentive without going overboard and ambience of the Inn is beautiful with a stunning outlook over fields. The food, a pork pie with a very good variety of pickles etc plus a fabulous chutney, salads, bread and butter, while my husband had Cumberland sausage and mash. The mash was so creamy and buttery I kept “tasting”. The meal was a highlight of our trip to the UK. After lunch I meandered into the shop, and this is worthwhile having a good look around and chatting to the friendly staff. A good range of wines and cookbooks. If you are thinking of heading in this direction, reserve a table so you won’t be disappointed.

We booked for today 11/08/25 my wife’s Birthday. Absolutely “Spot on” the building is amazing, the setting truly spectacular. The smoked Salmon probably the best smoked salmon I have savoured, I ate all the dressing, which isn’t normal for me. My Darling wife had the fried Prawn, amazing. And both had the lamb, we can’t find fault just praise, for the food, staff and idyllic settings and the Shiraz (which a rather nice one) was at a perfect temperature! Thank you.

I don't normally leave reviews but our visit for a Sunday evening was worth taking the time. We probably visit once a year, the food this time was still as good as ever and incredibly the prices haven't gone through the roof either. The fish pie was around £18 which is what we end up paying at a very average chain pub in our local town and it will be very average food, so average we don't bother with these sort of pubs.||It's also interesting that the guests seemed to have changed. Years and years ago we'd visit and have to hold our nose at the smell of flashy new money. Last night, Whitewell just had lots of lovely diners enjoying themselves. Presumably, the Ferraris have all migrated to the new Three Fishes where £45 a main seems to be the norm.||The staff were efficient and friendly, all in all - really enjoyed our evening.

The Inn and Whitwell is charming - huge rooms with very comfortable beds and old furniture. The en suites have glorious plumbing. No kettle in the bedrooms - instead you phone for tea or coffee at any time you choose and it arrives promptly. Our bedroom overlooked the river and hills beyond - stunning views. Downstairs it’s all flagstones, rugs and wood burning stoves. A generous selection of games available. Generous portions of well cooked food. Unpretentious and hearty. Good beers on tap.

A Truly Romantic Weekend at The Inn at Whitewell... We had the most wonderful romantic weekend at The Inn at Whitewell. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome — helpful, warm, and genuinely attentive throughout our stay. We stayed in Room 5, which was absolutely beautiful. The view over the valley was stunning — waking up to that peaceful landscape felt like a dream. One of our favourite moments was enjoying fresh coffee, brought to us early in the morning by the lovely staff, while we sat quietly watching the birds outside. It was those thoughtful little touches that made the stay feel so special. The food was excellent — delicious, well-prepared, and served with care. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and professional, always on hand without ever being intrusive. This place truly has a charm of its own — relaxing, romantic, and full of character. We’re already counting down the days until our next weekend away at the Inn.

This was our fourth visit here and we were pleased to find the food and service still as excellent as ever.||We had drinks on the terrace before being shown to a table in the restaurant, overlooking the river as we had request. We had 2 mains, and 2 desserts which were all fantastic and service was just right. We left feeling full after another enjoyable meal.||One of our favourite places and we also end up in the fabulous wine shop.

Yelp
Gorgeous little place, hidden away in the Lancashire countryside. They only do lunch between 12pm and 2pm and despite the remote location it gets busy. Parking can be tough too, so arrive early. The Inn itself is a quintessential English inn with roaring fires. Dogs are welcome, so expect to see a few nestled at the feet of their owners. Also expect to see a stack of wellington boots and walking shoes in the hall, and probably a crowd of wedding guests since it's a popular spot for weddings. The bar food is great - well cooked and tasty traditional and local. I had the fish pie, Sparky had the "bangers and champ" which was definitely the starring dish. This place featured in the first episode of "The Trip" featuring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, but don't let that make you think it's stupendously expensive. At lunch time, main courses are between £10 and £15. Meals in the restaurant are more expensive than the bar (say £20 - £30 per main) but it's still not ridiculously expensive. The only thing stopping this place from getting 5 stars is that I'm not a fan of the ordering system. You have to help yourself to a menu and then tell the bar your table number. This is a place with some serious class, and given how busy the bar gets it would really benefit from table service.

Yelp
We stayed at this Inn, as we were visitng family close-by (not too close mind you, there really is nothing in Whitewell, except a church, and well this place!). I think there are 20+ rooms here and the bedroom pleasant, with modern but traditional furnishings. A old-fashioned dial telephone, and bookshelf of authentic old books sat alongside my bose radio. Anyway the views from the outside patio and restaurant are breathtaking, especially at sunset, overlooking the river Hodder and hills of farmland. I think you can fish here for a small fee if staying in the hotel. We ate in the restaurant and the food was great, I had chicken pate, followed by melt in your mouth fillet of beef. There is a wide range of drinks on offer, and the shop Vintners sells plenty of wine, alongside Molton Brown products, which are also used in the rooms. Lovely little place, worth the trek.

Yelp
Stayed for three days due to business, great facilities, lovely rooms, and a very warm welcome. Rooms have everything you could need from peet fires, to Bose music systems, fantastic views over the river. Bar and restaurant are fantastic, cant say anything negative.

Yelp
Inn at Whitewell is situated on the River Hodder. It offers seven miles of salmon, trout and sea trout fishing and 6 acres of views down the valley. It is astonishing. The wine list is exceptionally good as is the food quality and the staff are very friendly and courtious.

Yelp
This is a true English country inn and has traditional accommodation to a very high standard. I have stayed in the coach house and it has an original Victorian Shower and bath which are just beautiful. The food is an excellent standard and this is a very popular place to eat for 'ladies who lunch', though it is a casual place with stone floors and open fires. Many sports cars and expensive 44's are often parked outside and many people inside are wearing their designer wellies!! there are nice walks in the area and visiting here can make a great day out. walk down to the river and walk accross the stepping stones.

Yelp
Excellent setting for this pub, inn, restaurant, wedding venue or whatever it chooses to be to be quite honest. A huge building situated in one of the most picturesque parts of the surrounding area. Recommended beers, ales and great food!

Yelp
Sitauted in lovely surroundings. We went to a wedding here and it was amazing. The food was great, the views were great and the rooms brill

Yelp
Great authentic country Inn,in stunning countryside. Outstanding food in a rustic setting. The fish pie is a signature dish and to be reccommended. The chapel next door makes it a popular wedding venue in summer. The rooms are very difficult to get, as they are booked months in advance.
