Best Tampa-Area Spots For Chardonnay This Memorial Day | Eater

"Nothing makes you feel more Floridian than docking your boat, rolling up to the bar with your floral shirt unbuttoned, and ordering a glass of wine while you wait for some peel-and-eat shrimp. You can do all of that at The Island Bar and Grill, pr just dine in and enjoy your chardonnay with oysters al fresco." - Matthew Meltzer

What a fun place! Started with a key lime Martini, YUM. Got the 3 course meal. Clam chowder, Coconut Shrimp with strawberry horseradish (not spicy) with sweet mashed potatoes, and key lime pie. I almost had to roll out of there. Highly recommend this place.

We’ve been here several times now and the food and service have never been disappointing. Our bartender Ron was very nice and made sure we were taken care of. Stuffed mushrooms were good as well as the grouper bites. When we are in the area we always come here. Would highly recommend.

First time coming here after our kayaking activity. Our waitress, Megan, was super nice and welcoming. As many places, prices are not cheap, but the atmosphere, service , music, parking lot, worth it.

Jill the waitress made sure my brother had a great birthday! She was awesome and fast. Loved her vibe !! Food was great and very reasonable ! Got the chicken tacos and potato salad for myself. Potato salad wasn’t the greatest but the tacos were amazing!!

After a beach morning / afternoon at Fort de soto this was the PERFECT lunch spot for us. We got seated inside right away on a Friday afternoon in August with no issues and our server, Scott, was great! (He should narrate audiobooks btw) tried to trio of raw oysters, I loved the sushi and inferno one, but I hated the "caviar" one hahaha. Clam chowder was FIREEEEE, downed it in like 10 seconds. So good. Crab stuffed mushrooms were a crowd pleaser and highly reccomend. Ceasar salad was also super good, honestly we all enjoyed our food and drinks and I would absolutely tell friends/family/strangers on the internet to definitely check this place out. I'll be back! - IG @ SpicyAivy ♡

We came here for dinner, it had just rained very hard so unfortunately the tiki bar area was closed down so we sat at the outside bar. They were very welcoming and helped us get to the outside seating area. This was our first time here, and we were surprised by how clean it was for being right on the marina. The bartender was very sweet and gave us suggestions on the top selling things on the menu. We got served pretty quickly after our order, which was nice. The food was delicious and enough for two peopleto share. Everything overall was very good, and we will definitely be back and spread the word. Thank you for a great night!

Google
Very cute little restaurant with great drinks and food. My personal favorite was the Grouper Crab Cakes! I am a crab cake lover, but not everyone makes the best. I tried their Island shrimp which was amazing, the breading was to perfection. And of course I couldn’t leave without having the Lobster Mac and Cheese for my entree. I almost forgot the oysters were amazing too! Service was wonderful, everyone was nice. It was 3 of us and we went on a Thursday afternoon. It wasn’t crowded at all!

Google
First time here for dinner and Anna Kate was our server and she was amazing, so friendly, helpful and sweet! Our meal of salmon and the chilled seafood platter was delicious. Highly recommend not just for the food but for the amazing service, we will definitely be back!

Yelp
The Island Grille and Raw Bar in Tierra Verde has become a regular stop for my paddleboarding group after a day on the water. The space has a fun and relaxed vibe with live music in the evenings, a pool, and a welcoming layout that works well for groups. The seafood is surprisingly good for a hotel bar and restaurant, and the prices feel fair for the venue. The scallops are always cooked nice and tender with a smooth flavor and texture that stands out. The saffron mussels are so amazing that you will find yourself asking for extra bread just to soak up every bit of the sauce. What I appreciate most is that the food consistently delivers. Many places by the water or near a marina or hotel can feel over rated, but the dishes here always come through with fresh ingredients and solid flavor. The service is usually attentive, friendly, and easygoing, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. It is a great spot to unwind after a long day outside and has become a dependable favorite for us.

Yelp
Hate to give these types of reviews to a local place. Service sucks. Bartenders that can't look at you, order for food that never gets placed. Where does it stop? Sad withplaces. This place used to rock This place is normally packed.

Yelp
The food was AMAZING I didn't get the toppings on my tacos but it worked out cause I think I got extra and I loaded those babies up once I tasted it. SO good! The lobster sliders were to die for too! My son enjoyed his burger and fries also. Our server was great. Very friendly, knew the menu and drinks. Super chill vibe in here. There was a game on we got to watch but also some live music. We couldn't see the stage but still enjoyed it. Wish we would have known about the special during the week-will def hit them up next time for that - check my pics for it.

Yelp
Excellent service. The clam chowder was packed with clams. Best we have had in St Pete. Grilled oysters we offered in three different preparations or select all three. Our choice was garlic/parmesan. Fresh oysters were, well, fresh. If the weather permits, sit on the patio. It's a modern version of a Florida fish shack, but not a shack. Have been pleased for both lunch and dinner

Marci M.

Yelp
Unfortunately, this is not the same place as it once was. I understand it's hard to find good help, or ANY help, but this is pretty low. 13 minutes on hold... fish and chips served WITHOUT tartar, cocktail OR even ketchup. Our server hasn't even been back since our food was delivered. It's a beautiful location if that's your level of service.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Great atmosphere adjacent to the Marriott Residence Inn. Love the buffalo shrimp, don't be afraid to get the hot level. The clam chowder was very bacon heavy, but i consider that a plus. All our servers were great and worked great as a team.

Yelp
Stopped at this place for lunch on the way to St Pete Beach. Has a large indoor area as well as a patio area with bar. It was quite busy the day we went. Our server was Mikayla, and she was engaging and provided great service. She was on top of everything. We started with cocktails, a margarita for me and a blackberry margarita with whiskey for hubby. He had a grouper sandwich, and I had a Caesar salad topped with grilled grouper with the dressing on the side. Good cocktails and decent food.

Yelp
Awesome place, good food, great ambiance. Super service. Dog friendly was the best part. So happy we could bring our pup!
google avatar

Yelp
In true FL fashion the Island Grille has a beautiful water/marina view from the deck where you can enjoy tropical drinks (and a full bar) along with the complete menu while watching palm trees sway. Plus, it's dog friendly deck and bar. Inside dining room, inside bar and outside bar and table seating available. We dropped in for a drink and appetizers. The grouper apps were fabulous! Will definitely return for a full meal seating! The service was fantastic!

Yelp
The ambience and service were very good. However, I thought the meal I got was way overpriced for what was in it. I got the Cajun shrimp and lobster pasta cavatelli. The lobster was shredded and you could barely see it or taste it at all because it was so minuscule. There were probably only eight small to medium sized shrimp in a big bowl of pasta. The sauce didn't even taste that good. It cost $27. I went with three other friends who ordered different meals and two of them said they would not want to go back.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
I'd make it a negative if I could. Friday night and completely understaffed. Outside bartender had an attitude when we would try to catch his attention. Moved inside and they lost our food ticket. Make some changes or this place will be closed soon.

Yelp
Had to plan a Wecome dinner for our son and DIL and our families, over the phone, several states away (sight unseen, food not tasted). It COULD NOT HAVE GONE BETTER! It was perfect. Eric was very helpful and clear while planning, I decided to bring our own dessert, but let them do the table and area decorations-they were beyond beautiful. Everyone loved the food, even my very picky husband. We were a group of 16, John was our main server, others pitched in to bring out plates, so the flow was great. John was extremely attentive to each person at the table. I highly recommend your large and/or private gathering to be here, as well as any casual dining.

Yelp
Yummy, we started with ceviche and chips which went quickly. Our meals quickly followed and were fantastic. I had salmon with sweet potato mash and asparagus. I can't recall what my co-worker had but cleaned his plate quickly. The staff was very friendly and greatly informative to aid us in our selections. We sat on the patio with fans which made it a very enjoyable meal.

Yelp
Loved the convenience of this place near our hotel. Came in on a weekend. We were seated within like 15 minutes or so and sat at the bar while we waited. Definitely a family friendly type of environment. Pretty busy. We ordered the Grouper & Crab cake and the Salmon BLT wrap with fries. Both were really good. Service was friendly. Prices were decent.

Scott H.

Yelp
I don't write many reviews, but I travel a lot and eat at all kinds of restaurants. I especially love raw bars and always order oysters when I can. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst oyster experiences I've had anywhere. The oysters were dry, full of shell bits, and clearly not shucked by anyone who knows what they're doing. I actually felt bad for the oysters - it was the first time I couldn't finish them. Sad day for oysters. To make matters worse, the mojito was easily the worst I've ever had. The bartender was friendly and did her thing, but the mix was way too spicy and overdone. How do you screw up a mojito? The staff was kind and attentive, which is the only reason this isn't a one-star review. But I won't be back. If you have Raw Bar in your name, you should know how to properly shuck and serve an oyster.

Yelp
Island Grille is your classic Florida restaurant-- Jimmy Buffett music, frozen drinks, great seafood, and boat-views. Service is always so good here with a smile and it is always a joy to come back!

Yelp
We were here to celebrate a friends birthday. Appetizers were ordered for the table. Fried shrimp, fish spread, crab cakes were all very good. Service was good, server was attentive. It was uncomfortable due to low or no AC. We asked twice for the overhead fans to be turned on, but never were. We ordered our entrees which did come out quickly for a large party. My boyfriend ordered grouper with mashed potatoes and Cesar salad. The salad was soggy and drenched in dressing with some brown pieces of lettuce. The potatoes were cold, not room temperature - cold. He asked to replace them and got the coleslaw which was mediocre at best. The grouper didn't come with tartar sauce but some special sauce on the side which was a big disappointment. The fish was cooked properly and was warmer than the potatoes. I ordered a mojo pork bowl which looked amazing, but was not warm enough. I took about three bites and brought the rest home. Thinking it will be better when I heat it up at home. Again, our server was very good and attentive. The birthday couple knew the owner and he stopped by a couple times and did offer her a complimentary drink and dessert. Our overall experience was mediocre at best. This is only our second time eating here and probably won't be back. There are too many other great restaurants in this area.

Yelp
Such an amazing drink and dinner! Such a fun atmosphere and very peaceful. Lots of menu options

Kathryn M.

Yelp
i ordered a shrimp BLT sandwich and couldn't eat this..... It was a huge pile of chopped lettuce shrimp and a couple slices of bacon under a wet dressing on sliced open faced buns I showed the manager and was comped for my sandwich but I suggested they remove this from the sandwich menu Service was good food was unacceptable

Yelp
Great food and tropical vibe but the service was slacking on Sunday 9/1. Came here (party of 4) over the weekend. We were immediately seated outdoors. All staff we encountered was friendly. However, my drink order was wrong, I ordered a mimosa and they sent a margarita. The server was friendly about getting it fixed. Then my entree was missing fries (they sent coleslaw instead, which I'd never order) and the server said she'd get it fixed. We finished our meal and the fries never showed up, we asked the server about it 3 times... It finally came out in a to-go box when we were ready to leave (and it was barely a handful of fries). We always tip at least 20%, so we did, and would like to return because the food was great, but service needs to improve. Two mixups for one party and the fries being forgotten over and over is cray. The live steel pan player was amazing! He created the most beautiful vibe.

Yelp
I really liked the atmosphere of the outside bar and tables that overlooks the pool, which is available to anyone dining. The menu has a nice variety from which to choose. Our server was quick to bring our drink order. I settled on the Calypso chicken sandwich, which I had grilled, with a side of fries. The sandwich came quickly and was hot, which I love. The bun was huge, but the piece of chicken was small, which meant I left a lot of the bun on the plate. The mango salsa was very good, but the small piece of chicken was disappointing. The side of fries was probably the smallest I have ever had. I seldom eat all the fries, but I did this order. We had arrived by boat, which was a nice option. We were parched from being on the water, but our server seldom came to our table with refills. Overall, just an OK experience.

Yelp
Well, I'm giving this rating and review based on going to this place for over 7 years and it being one of my favorites. I guess, all great runs come to an end. Location and setting is still awesome! I'll describe my experience tonight although this has happened in some fashion the last few times I've been here over the last few months. Pretty sad because I am a local and used to love this place. We ordered an appetizer with chips, queso and guacamole which was a $5 addition. When the appetizer was served, the guacamole was in a frozen mountain as it had been scooped out of its premade container. The appetizer had a quarter of the plate filled with chips - nowhere near enough to cover the accompanying items. When we asked for a refill of chips they alerted us "no problem" but this resulted in a $3 additional charge on our bill. I ordered wings, all flats with ranch. My girl ordered the calypso grilled chicken with house salad, no onion. The orders we received had onions on the salad and all drums and not flats. They did graciously leave the incorrect order because they were just gonna throw it away, but it took us significant time to get the corrected order and mayonnaise for the (tough cut) grilled chicken. So, I watched her eat. Was sketchy every time we needed service as we had to flag down the bartenders. This included the three times we needed a refill of a Diet Coke and both times we tried to order a second cocktail beverage. After receiving the bill we realized we were charged additional fees for ranch for the wings, having all flats and ordering extra chips. I mean, really? Through all of this, no apologies from the staff for the screw ups and no comps on the bill. Just sad as I have come here for years. Not an isolated occurrence and I have not left a negative review the last few times hoping things would improve. Sure wish they would get back to the good old days. Sad, just sad.

Yelp
We had a late lunch here after visiting the Beach at Fort de Soto. Our server Brooklyn was an absolute pleasure. Extremely friendly, smiling, & accommodating. Nice outdoor seating, very spacious which we always appreciate because we brought our Black Lab and he had plenty of room around our table. Food and drinks were delicious and cooked perfectly.

Emmalee L.

Yelp
Food was okay. Nothing great. However, our experience took a nosedive when an older waitress with a long blonde ponytail walked by our table and made a snarky comment about how my 1 year old made a huge mess with his food. She was not our waitress but felt the need to make a hateful comment towards my child as she passed by. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
So, I am really torn about this place! My parents absolutely love it and they rave about the charbroiled oysters all the time. I think they normally dine in the evening, which my sister said there are normally different kitchen staff at that time. We did a Birthday lunch here last weekend. Devon was our server and he was great. The appetizers were all quite tasty. We had the grouper crabcake, the seafood dip and the charbroiled parmesan oysters. The seafood dip and the crabcake were excellent. The oysters were decent but not better than Dragos in New Orleans which my dad said the ones here rivaled. Now onto my entrée, I got the $30 lobster mac & cheese and it was not good. It was not flavorful at all but it did have some decent chunks of lobster in it although my husband disagreed. I did get the tropical colada drink virgin and it was a very good. My side house salad was also pretty tasty. The citrus vinaigrette is nice. All in all I might be willing to give this place another chance at night but I wouldn't be overzealous in coming back. It is a beautiful establishment giving sunshine and beachy vibes.

Ashley J.

Yelp
This place is Amazing! We had Tyler as our server for 2 nights in a row and even though they were slammed, we felt like we were his only table. We love how they are dog friendly and the food was SO good! (The citrus vinaigrette is AMAZING) fried shrimp was large and flavorful and the blackened salmon and the mashed potatoes were all excellent! Highly recommend this place!!!

Yelp
If you have an oyster, this is a great place to go. Of course the location is everything when you get out of the oyster menu and you start going into the other stuff. Honestly, it kind of tastes a little bit like a Chili's or something like a chain restaurant like I don't know if they make fresh food there or do it from frozen or something, but it just isn't that great outside of the seafood

Yelp
Went back to Island Grill Saturday as we live on the island, like to support local business and always hope for a good experience so we keep trying, unsuccessfully. I heard they got rid of some dead weight, sadly the same snotty miserable people working the bars. There is a reason behind being bar patrons.. bartenders can easily make or break your experience and sadly we find the staff here always falls short. The only breath of fresh air here has been a young HAPPY guy named Alex who was our server. Why can't the bartending staff be like THAT guy? Working outside slinging drinks poolside and in the hospitality business.. hard to understand why this great restaurant can't nail a great vibe with the bartenders.

Yelp
Not a happy customer. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon for lunch eight hungry adults. We ordered standard shrimp , Oyster, fish and Island chicken meals. After a long delay, and inquiring to our server, the food final appeared. Very unfortunately my Island chicken meal was blackened and burnt. The incinerated bird was replaced after yet another delay. Our overall experience here was very poor. A friendly chat with the manager, met with no results to adjust or comp our bill. We will return again to see if their cooking skills have Improved. While the view and deck area are great the restaurant needs a quality review.

Catherine J.

Yelp
Island Grille has totally gone downhill. The place was very empty for a Friday night. There was only one other couple at the bar inside, and the tables inside the restaurant were pretty scarce. We waited for about 45 minutes for an order of a dozen oysters (raw), and fried grouper bites off the appetizer menu. My husband gave the oysters a C minus, and the grouper bites were so bad I only ate two of them. We both ordered Grey Goose martinis and the bartender asked if we were OK having our martinis in either a plastic cup or a wine glass because she couldn't find any martini glasses. Call me crazy, but I really don't want to drink a Grey Goose martini out of a plastic cup or wine glass. Has anyone heard of hand washing some glasses? Every time we go it's worse and worse so we definitely will not be going back.

Yelp
We live just down the street and Island Grille solidified tonight that they will not be getting our business anymore. We called to put in a to-go order at 8pm. At 8:45pm, my husband showed up to pick up the order and the hostess said, "oh, I never put the order in". She assured him it would be just 15 minutes. A bit agitated, he waited....and waited....and waited.... After 30 minutes he went to the hostess and asked if something could be done to remedy the issue; a partial refund, a gift card, etc. She asked her manager and the best they could do was a free dessert (seriously?!) He asked for the chocolate cake (his mother's favorite), and they said they actually didn't have that. He again pressed for a partial refund, and they refused. Once the food finally came out and we got home, I opened my $16 greek salad to find no dressing, no potato salad, and no beets. The genuine care for customers has ensured we will no longer be supporting this business.

Yelp
I love the Island Grille & Raw Bar! The raw oysters are always fresh and delicious. We love to sit outside and enjoy the live music whenever we visit. Our most recent visit was on Labor Day so our waitress was a little slow because it was super busy but normally service is great.

Yelp
Now that they are under new ownership, the establishment is now amazing and have never ever had any bad experiences since they took over. I strongly recommend them to everyone, especially if they had a bad experience prior to the new ownership.

Yelp
My friend lives down the street from here and was curious about it so I figured I'd give another chance. For being called a ra bar these people should be ashamed of themselves. The oysters are absolutely disgusting. We ordered the Rockefeller and they looked good, the flavor was ok, but they have no idea how to shuck them. HUGE pieces of shell in each and every one of them. Totally inedible. My friend made it thru three , spitting out shells. I couldn't get past the first one. We brought it to the attention of the bartender who said "yeah sometimes it happens) WTH? He left and different bartender came on and saw them sitting there and asked if they were ok . We showed him the huge pieces of shell and he explained they don't shuck them by hand, and use a press ,which sometimes ends up like this. Really people, you know this, but continue to do it.? Friend curiosity has been sated so we definitely won't return. Even though he lives right down the block.

Christa A.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was delicious from the raw oysters to the cheesecake! We got there early -around 5- it was busy and the service was great. The bartender was very attentive as we drank and dined outside the bar at the night tops overlooking the pool area. No complaints beginning to end.

Yelp
We really love this place we come every time we're in St Pete. We got several things but this was my food and it was really awesome. Service was good and sitting outside is nice!

Yelp
For sure come here!!!!! Service, food, and drinks great all around! My server Ana had a trainee with her, Caroline, and gave great service. Was very accommodating and patient with just me a table of 1! The oysters are to die for, and the grouper sandwich was perfectly cooked and seasoned. If you like drinks, you for sure have to get the strawberry mojito and key like martini ( DELICIOUS )! Will definitely be coming back again, can't wait to try out what else they have on the menu!!!!! Sat on the patio outside and it was so great! Live music was going on and it was happy hour. Very great atmosphere here

Yelp
Wonderful service from hostess to our server Dani!! It was my husband and I as well as our well behaved Golden Retriever Perry. Food choices were plentiful as well as beer and bar drinks. We had 4 appetizers all were delish!! What the cherry on top was when Dani asked Perry pup what he would like to eat and presented him with a few choices- NEVER has a restaurant ever presented this before!!! A++++

Yelp
Outside seating. Very nice dinner. We have eaten here several times. The server was excellent, drinks were good and dinner was very good. Liked the outdoor seating.
google avatar

Raymond M.

Yelp
Incredible fresh fish, loved the wine, atmosphere was 10000/10. And live music was great. I wish I could rate this restaurant 5 stars, but I was told by my bar neighbor that Steve Westphal owns this place. I cannot continue to support this restaurant because I refuse to support the ownership. Steve acts horrendously to locals, the employees of all of his restaurants, and others around St. Pete. Note: I personally do not know him, but I have worked many years in food and beverage, and I know many that have received the sad end of his awful behavior. Respect toward the employees and managers who still work for this prick.

Yelp
We got sat got our appetizers and are good took 2 hours to arrive. Manager barely helped and food was cold when served

Yelp
Time for the locals to go back to The Grill. We finally found a newer bartender there named Todd. What a great guy. He was born for this job! Great attitude, great suggestions and an overall great time. All the bartenders are really nice but Todd was over the top good. Truly - time to go back and give it another try.

Yelp
There are a multitide of ways to enjoy this gorgeous venue. There is an inside bar, 2 outside bars, an oyster shucking bar, 2 indoor dining areas, an outdoor dining area and best of all; for $5 at the yacht club next door, full use of the pool facilities with a walk up counter for food and drinks at the Grille. Sensational ambiance and flexibility. I have come twice for the Taste of the Beaches event and in both cases the best ambiance of all participants and some of the best food for your ticket. No skimping on food, full servings for your taste ticket. Substantial and delectable cuisine every time. About a 40 minute drive from N. Tampa and you can switch to vacation mode for the day. Live music or DJ music is available on certain days and hours for your enjoyment. Service has always been friendly, helpful and engaging. The oyster guy gave a big, plump and luscious oyster to taste for free. I love this place! Next time I have guests in town, this is my destination. There is a Residence Inn next door should you want to stay the night and it has a sensational view of Tierra Verde on the 7th floor rooftop bar. This is an impressive bucket list destination when your ready for an impressive and remarkable experience, especially if you are clever enough to enjoy all the amenities the area has to offer.

Yelp
I ordered salmon and I noticed it wasn't cooked properly. They took it back and it was still rare. By the time I got my food everybody else was done giving. They did not even take it off of the bill, which was very disappointing. The time before we went. We waited over two hours for our food. Our friend got food poisoning here two times.

Yelp
Seafood places seem to be everywhere in FL. Island Grille has a nice jibe since it's near the water and has indoor and outdoor seating. A wide variety on their menu. Food is pretty standard flair, with nothing off the charts memorable. Just decent food. The live music is a nice touch.

Yelp
With a nice experience at this restaurant in Tierra Verda, Florida recently. It was absolutely humming as it was spring break, and the demand was overflowing. We sat in a twosome table just off the bar as the demand was for everything outside. We were OK with that and avoided an additional 20 minute wait. My wife had the chirasco steak and I had the cheeseburger. I was there just to be company for my wife as I was full from previous meals and not hungry at all (did not intend to eat). Surprisingly, I gobbled up everything as the cheeseburger was cooked absolutely perfectly, medium rare and was quite tasty along with the fries. My wife's chirasco was tasty, but also a bit chewy. We would not recommend it as an option as there are plenty of other tasty items on the menu. Overall, a very good experience. The service was great, items for the most part were tasty and atmosphere, ambience and noise level not bad at all.

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant many times. The service is good and most of the time the food is good. Don't order the lobster mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was good but you needed a microscope to see the lobster, it was cut in tiny pieces and very little of it. The cost of the entre was $30. I was told that lobster is expensive. If lobster is too expensive to actually put a reasonable amount in the dish it should be taken off the menu.

Yelp
Some of the most regular good I've ever had in my life at an above regular price. I'm just not sure how you can make subpar mashed potatoes and calamari but this was not hitting for me at all. It was OK. Meaning the price was not reflective of the value of the food. My server also did the weird thing when she served all the white people around me before me and aided my table like the plague. Only reason I could find to go back here is maybe drinks.?
