"Lots of casual Italian spots try to pull off the whole mix-and-match pasta thing, but few so convincingly as Homemade Italian Company, the San Francisco-based mini chain. Pick your noodle and your sauce, and dinner’s all set for as little as $10. Even better, order a giant slab of their exceedingly delicious lasagna with meat sauce ($14), which is plenty of food to feed two hungry adults — though, if we’re being honest, it’s unlikely you’ll want to share. During the pandemic, Italian Homemade has been especially active on the takeout and delivery front, offering various meal box deals and a selection of Italian pantry items. Order online for pickup or delivery." - Luke Tsai

Google
Italian Homemade never disappoints! Their pasta is consistently amazing, with every bite feeling like a taste of Italy. The sauces are so mouthwatering and perfectly complement the fresh, flavorful pasta. The variety of pasta and sauce combinations means you’ll want to come back again and again just to try them all. Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves authentic Italian cuisine!

Google
Authentic Italian food is served here. Nice staff, great service, fresh ingredients. We tried veggie lasagna and pasta with pesto and marinara sauce, which were both tasty. Their tiramisu and latte were good, too.

Google
We ordered the Grassona, the pappardelle special, and the meat lasagna. Very tasty and filling. Topping it off with the panna cotta was a treat!

Google
The actual pasta was excellent and the bolognese sauce was very good. I wish they offered thinner noodles. The thinnest ones are fettuccine. Personally I’m a fan of angel hair. They don’t even offer regular spaghetti noodles. But still great taste. Like most other places, only street parking is available. There does seem to a public lot to the west, but I got lucky and found a good parking spot on the side street

Oh my! The meat lasagna and panna cotta is absolutely amazing! I came here over and over again just for them!

Google
So delicious 🤤 We ordered different pastas and all of them where so Italian and yummy. They are really authentic Italian 😁 Everything was fresh. We got their Tiramisu and Panna Cotta and they were soooo good. Highly recommend this place. If you like Italian pastas, you definitely would love this place.

Google
One of the best bolognese sauce and meatball around the bay end the pasta also was great. Nice variety of pastas and sauce.la. I didn’t gave 5 stars because the service was a little bit slow due the guy was by himself. But definitely I totally recommend and I will come back for sure.

Google
this place seems really good in my head, but all three times i’ve gone here i’ve ended up disappointed. the food isn’t bad but it always falls short of my expectations. this could be a me issue though bc others that I go with tend to enjoy it more than me. the veggie lasagna sauce didn’t taste very good to me and i wish it had more protein or did more to the vegetables.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of stopping by the Italian Homemade Company on College Avenue in Elmwood for lunch, and I can confidently say it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I walked in, the cozy atmosphere and the delightful aromas transported me straight to Italy. I decided to try the spaghetti and meatballs, and let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing! The noodles were freshly made right in front of me, which made the dish even more special. The spaghetti had the perfect al dente texture, and the meatballs were incredibly flavorful, juicy, and just the right size. The marinara sauce was rich and savory, tying everything together beautifully. It's clear that they take pride in their homemade recipes! Of course, I couldn't leave without trying their gelato. I opted for a scoop of the pistachio and a scoop of the hazelnut, and they did not disappoint! The gelato was creamy, rich, and packed with flavor--definitely a treat for anyone with a sweet tooth. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Yelp
DoorDash order made by a traveling healthcare worker who pretty much eats for free. Let's get into it. Ordered: Gnocchi with meatballs bolognese sauce. $25. Very good and the gnocchi was soft and tasty. Bolognese had nice meaty chunks also. 9/10 Fettuccine and butter and sage. $17.25. So made a mistake because I thought butter and sage was Alfredo sauce. It's not hahahaha. Still good eating it at 3am in the hospital, hungry and cold. Piadinna Classic. $16.50. Actually big even tho it's flat. I ate a half over 2 days. Pretty good. Kind of bitter but i liked it. Overall, good prices for homemade pasta. Added to my favorites list.

Yelp
I have found through my travels that you need not be in the most beautiful of venues, have the best artwork hanging or marble floors to be in a 5 star establishment. It is all about the experience and the interactions with those there to make a fine dining experience. This shop is an extremely comfortable location without all the glitz and glitter. The beauty here is that everything is super fresh and tasty. If you come by early you can see them making the various pastas in the front of the store. You can watch from outside through the window. Our meals were great.... You order at the counter exactly what you want... Pasta, sauce, additional items, meatballs etc... and your drink. Take a seat and they will bring to you. My wife and I really enjoyed our sections. Pasta was fresh and tasty, The sauce was rich and flaovriful and the meatballs were a perfect texture. I had the oportunity to speak with manager who explained his background and just why they do such a good job here. I am glad that we had an opportunity to enjoy their food a couple of times. KUDOs to the team at The Italian Homemade Company

Yelp
Come for the pasta. Stay for the moment. Lunch for two at a window seat on a Wednesday at 2pm. Delightful

Sistine M.

Yelp
The first thing I noticed about the ravioli was the quality of the pasta. It definitely stood out. The ravioli was filled generously with a lot of meat. I liked the balance of the tomato and cream in the pasticciata sauce. Lasagna was meaty with a lot of layers. Personally I like my lasagna to be more on the cheesy side. The flatbread was good and the meatballs were, too. The restaurant itself lacked character. It was clean, and I liked their little display and posters, but there wasn't much more to it. It was just... cold. It was like a cafeteria.- go there, sit down, eat, leave. There wasn't a sense of hospitality. The guy at the register started at us when we walked in. Even after making eye contact he didn't say anything, smile, greet... nothing. Just stared. The food was good, but there's nothing pulling me back.

Kelekolio M.

Yelp
It was my first time trying this particular Italian Homemade Company, I usually go to the one in SF North Beach. I'd say the quality of food is just as good here. The pasta tastes fresh, the sauce is not too oily, and the noodles were thick! There wasn't a lot of people inside but the restaurant is pretty big. I like where it's located as well so you can walk around looking at the shops and grab ice cream after!

Jennifer L.

Yelp
The 9 year old and I came here before a show at the Berkeley Playhouse. It was not busy, we easily found a table. We also had the pleasure of watching ravioli being crated in front of us. We absolutely loved our meal, pasta is our favorite comfort food. And dessert was delicious as well. It's on the 9 year old's list of favorite restaurants.

Gina G.

Yelp
Pasta is my jam, and how exciting is it when you stumble upon spots that specialize in everything you're craving (especially when it's pasta on a cold and rainy day). The Italian Homemade Company was the perfect casual spot to tuck into with our umbrellas. We were looking for warmth and we found it quickly here - the menu was filled with homemade pasta sauces and pasta styles to choose from. My husband went with the meat lasagna & I chose the tagliatelle, both with a bolognese/bechamel creme sauce topped with parm that was worth coming back for! There are also fresh salads, flatbreads, homemade desserts, charcuterie and daily pasta specials. I would love to come back and try more of an array of sauces & pasta shapes - eyeing the ravioli, tortellini and rigatoni with sauces including the pesto, brown butter & sage, and the meatballs. With friendly counter service and dishes that won't break the weekly allowance, Italian Homemade has something special for the busy patron or families that want to sit and stay awhile. Mangia!

Jamie K.

Yelp
Paid three visits late at night to have dessert, and the tiramisu unfortunately went downhill after the first. It has 10/10 potential but the inconsistency depending on who makes it that day takes away 2 stars:( on bad days, the ladyfingers have the texture of a loofah sponge. otherwise, perfectly sweet and creamy. The affogato is lovely and you can choose whatever gelato flavor to plop into ur coffee:)

Sarah L.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday for an early dinner and the place wasn't crowded at all. I was able to order right away and set by the window. I got the rigatoni with pasticciata sauce and parmesan cheese on top. The pasta was cooked al dente and the sauce was very creamy and flavorful. The place is well lit and tables are well spaced apart. Staff were friendly and service was fast.

Pearl B.

Yelp
Delicious find , wonderful flavors , friendly staff . Also has food and wine options .

Belen A.

Yelp
Their meat lasagna was delicious! My boyfriend tried the tagliatelle pasta with meatballs (with bolognese sauce) and the sauce tasted delicious as well. I loved how the sauce used in the lasagna and the pasta didn't taste like plain tomato sauce out of a can. It had rich flavor. The hazelnut ice cream was also really good (reminds me of ferrero rocher chocolate). Tiramisu was not my favorite but overall everything was very delicious.

Corey N.

Yelp
Friends took me here last week. The food was definitely homemade and delicious! Parking is a challenge in this busy restaurant area. The traffic is so busy which makes it that much harder to navigate. BUT...find a way to get there. You will love the food. The interior is not sparkling or high end, but the food is honest, good, and the staff nice. I had a garden salad with Fettuccine Bolognese. SO GOOD! The salad was fresh and the dressing just right (and not drowning the food). They ask you bus your own table. They have several clearly marked bins so it is easy to do and support this wonderful local Italian restaurant. Give it a try and plan to go back often.

Salil K.

Yelp
Dined here for lunch with a large group. We were able to move some tables together and fit us all comfortably. I ordered the Cacio and veg lasagna. The lasagna was just okay I feel like the pieces of carrots and other vegetables were too big. Cacio e Pepe was excellent, salty and cheesy and would recommend. The place got pretty full midday on a Saturday. I left extremely full.

Caedi S.

Yelp
My partner and I Iove Italian food and we are trying to get past Gypsy's, so we have frequented Italian Homemade pretty often. The pros - this place has a cool vibe, is near cute stores and in a nice part of town, and the service is quick and you bus your own dishes. The cons- I have had some real misses here - do not get pesto sauce with anything other than gnocchi and do not get red sauce alone. I think the concept of make your own pasta is fine but a lot of the creations come out bland and underseasoned. I think this is only a good option for the lasagna which I give a 5/5 and the pesto gnocchi with I would give a 3.5/5. The pesto is very oily and gets tiring to eat after a little bit and it needs extra parmesan, so I would recommend going with a friend and sharing. Overall it's fine for students, but I couldn't see myself returning after graduating.

Breeze O.

Yelp
The food is spectacular. Service and ambiance are adequate. Have the lasagna and you'll be ready to leave earth happy. But don't, cuz you still have to have the squid ink pasta... THAT was out of this world, but you can have THAT in this restaurant too.

Cristine P.

Yelp
My first impression is that this was a pricy place for the portion, visual. IT WAS SO GOOD. I got the gnocchi with the white Parmesan sauce and added a side of pesto to make a creamy pesto sauce... chefs kiss. Pass on the naan though, that was not good. My colleague got the gnocchi with bolognese and was also very satisfied. Best spot for a carb overload.

Lori L.

Yelp
The selection of pasta is wonderful . The meatballs are superb !!! The ravioli amazing ! I Love being able to choose my own sauce . My grand daughter age 2 1/2 consumes 3 or 4 meatballs at one sitting! My husband is a picky eater and loves their food!

Alan C.

Yelp
We have eaten at TIHC's in and around SF but never at this location. The food tends to be reliable and priced fairly so when we saw this location for a late lunch in Berkeley we stopped in and ordered our go to - pappardelle with meat sauce / Ragu and two meatballs - which is under $20/each and usually filling and delicious. This was no exception - the pasta came in a smallish bowl and the sauce was good as usual but nothing was very hot and I kinda like my food served hot. My only complaint. Also the staff seemed to all be hiding and no one was walking around what is a fairly large space and clearing tables or checking on customers. If you want 15-20% tip perhaps come around and earn it please. Self serve or not. Good but we have had better meals at other locations that seemed busier and more customer friendly.

David A.

Yelp
I highly recommend avoiding this restaurant. The service and the food were terrible. This was our first time trying it. The cashier was rude from the start, as she didn't provide us with the right amount of silverware and had a bad attitude while taking our order and bringing out our food. We tried the garden salad, meat lasagna, piadina grassona, and cassona verde. The flatbreads tasted like raw flour, and the piadina and cassone tasted like freezer food. There's a reason they make you pay first. We left after only having a few bites.

Marie M.

Yelp
TikTok brought me here and it did not disappoint. The salad, pasta and tiramisu were so good and fresh. I was very impressed with everything from the service to the food.

Kelley K.

Yelp
The food here is great. Perfect portion size. You aren't going to bring leftovers home. Service, well you do your own servicing. You even have to bus your own table. It needs be less expensive than $40 for two approx. 4 oz of pasta w/sauce in a plastic bowl. And you are expected to tip. My husband & daughter love it. Me, I work at home during meals, not trying to tip someone else while I do the work at this restaurant for free.

Nia Q.

Yelp
We recently dined at the Italian Homemade Company, and the experience was disappointing. The service was terrible, particularly from the woman at the register, who I believe is the owner. She refused to remove an item from my order before I had even paid, claiming it had already been sent to the kitchen. This was surprising, as I had ordered too much and wanted to cancel one item. The restaurant itself was mediocre. The pasta was just okay, and almost everything contained pork, making it difficult to find options with protein. Overall, I do not recommend this place. There are many better Italian restaurants in Berkeley and Oakland.

Ashley J.

Yelp
I loved this place and highly recommend it to anyone looking for fresh pasta in the Berkeley area! The menu consists of different pastas and sauces (as well as other Italian dishes) and you are able to pick your combination of pasta and pasta sauce. You're able to order at the front and then seat yourself. I ordered the Tagliatelle with Bolognese. The pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly and the pasta sauce was also very good! The restaurant also sells gelato on the side which I definitely want to try when I return!

Kelly M.

Yelp
They make fresh ravioli in their window how cool is that? They have a counter order service and tables inside, a couple outside on the sidewalk. I find the food heavy and have been once or twice and don't usually want to go back. But it gets packed with college students.

Pat P.

Yelp
Delicious Italian dishes in casual rustic setting. We were looking for a place after catching a movie at the Elmwood and Italian Homemade is a short walk away. Counter service with table and bar seating. Our food arrived quickly, 10 minutes max. There's a self serve water station and you bus your own table. When I approached the cashier about napkins, he offered to clean our table instead which we really appreciated . The meatballs were so tasty especially with the sauce. I wish I ordered my own instead of sharing as an appetizer with the rest of the table! The lasagna had a lot of veggies and the bechamel sauce is a nice change from a tomato base. I would definitely return!

Waynr Z.

Yelp
Simple and great taste. BYOB and you have to bus your own table like it's a cafeteria.

C U.

Yelp
I was looking forward to bring my family to this restaurant but after witnessing how the staff have been instructed to treat delivery drivers, I will be taking them across the street to La Mediterranee.

Brett H.

Yelp
I've been to The Italian Homemade Company a handful of times now. Each time has always been a wonderful experience. The customer service is excellent and the food is always hot and delicious. There is a bit of limited seating, especially for the size party that we usually roll in with; 5 to 7 people. Though we typically don't wait more than 15 minutes to get a table large enough for us. The kids entertain themselves as we wait for our order by watching the pastaio's make the pasta in the front of the restaurant. Makes for a good time since the adults have time to mingle uninterrupted. My go to meal is tagliatelle with pesto (sorry, forgot to take a photo of this one) and a burrata salad. The texture of the pasta is always spot on and their pesto is very aromatic and never too oily. The burrata salad is definitely large enough to share, especially if you're ordering a pasta dish as well. The only recommendation I would have for The Italian Homemade Company is for them to up their portion sizes back to what they used to be. The portion sizes haven't necessarily become small now, though they just aren't the size an Italian restaurant would typically provide anymore. If they could do this one recommendation I would have no problem providing them a 5 Star review.

Asiyeh Z.

Yelp
We tried the pesto fettuccine and salmon ravioli ( which was the special for the night ). I think the pesto was great I didn't care for the salmon ravioli because it didn't have a whole lot of flavor. The atmosphere was nice and they allowed us to bring our little dog in.

Vince V.

Yelp
I was very disappointed with my meal at The Italian Homemade Company - The first version of my review was removed from Yelp - so I will keep this simple - After getting a tip from the "KQED Check, Please! Bay Area" - and taking the adivce of a UCB student - I visited Homemade - From the counter I ordered a pasta dish that feature two meat balls - about 21.00 including some flat bread. The counter employee was limited on information about the menu. Once I paid for the dish at the counter - I was told that pasta was not available - so she suggested another pasta - CS is limited on explaining the menu items. When the pasta dish arrived it looked great - but tasted salty and unpleasant - the meat balls were also so salty and unpleasant - The flat bread arrived and reminded me of corn chips or a tostada and did not complement the pasta. I will keep it simple so my review will be approved. The pasta and meatballs were so salty that I could not finish my meal. The CS was non existent. This Homemade Pasta Company is a disapointment -

Yelp
My friend & I got out of an event late & were looking for a bite to eat a little after 9pm. Originally went to tacos & beer spot across the street but they said they closed, we understood & left. We looked online & this place said it closed at 9:30 so we walked in & and ask the cashier if we could still place an order (it was 9:11pm). The cashier said yes. I asked what was good on the menu or a popular item, she said pasta. Well obviously . In my interactions with her she did seem a bit rude, like she didn't want to be bother. While we were waiting for our food my friend mentioned the same cashier was rude when she came here another time. Anyways, so my friend's food came out first and I was still waiting for mine. My salad came out last and then boom lights went out. We thought maybe power went out or something & just shrugged it off like well that was weird. Lights came back on. Then 5 minutes later the lights went out again & stayed off. We looked around & noticed they turned the lights off on us & were grabbing their things to go home. There were other customers still eating in the restaurant as well. I said to one of the staff, wow is that your way of kicking us out & she said they are & nodded in the direction of her team mates in the kitchen. I didn't get to finish my food & walked out. I looked at my phone to check the time it was 9:37. I looked across the street & there were several people still eating at tacos & beers (they closed at 9). This restaurant should take note of their neighbor across the street. That's how you do customer service & run a business. If you want to be out the door at a certain time (9:30 then change your closing hours to 9pm to give a grace time to allow your customers to finish their food. I also recommend putting a different team member to be your cashier. They are the face of your business & should be welcoming & provide a good experience. After reading other reviews seems like this person has an attitude problem (possible mood disorder). I really hope she is not the owner, makes me wonder how she treats her staff. Food was meh. never again

Martha G.

Yelp
First time trying to place and it's delicious. The meatballs are not dense, they are perfectly moist and flavorful! The bolognese sauce is also a winner. Love that the pasta is freshly made. The sausage piadina was also good. I was too full to finish it but it's a perfect to-go meal if you're on the go and want a quick bite to walk and eat. The service is friendly and the ambiance is nice too. Feels causal with the table setups and music playing. I like it. The music is a bit loud so for those looking for a quiet meal, this may not be the place you want to seat and eat. Will definitely come back to try other pastas and sauces.

Alexis M.

Yelp
Pretty solid spot if you are craving Italian food in a casual setting! The food itself was decent (not the best I've ever had), with perfect portion for pasta. I love the combo option where you choose your sauce and pasta. It's counter service style and you bus your own table. I enjoyed the tagliatelle pasta with bolognese-very filling. I love that they homemake their pasta, and its a great option if you want classic, simple Italian food.

Sydney J.

Yelp
I came here with my partner when we were craving some Italian food, and I ordered a veggie ravioli with white sauce, while they ordered tagliatelle with pasticciata, which is bechamel sauce with bolognese. We got parmesan cheese on both. Our order was ready for pickup on time, with quick friendly service by the staff. Though I thought the green color on mine was fun, and it did indeed taste like vegetables, I do wish there was a sharper and stronger tasting cheese on the pastas. I did like the pasticciata but also would've preferred the flavor to be even stronger. I would say this place might be good if you mostly just want the carbs of pasta and creamy mild flavors, and if you'd rather have the option to add your own spicing, but personally I would've preferred something more flavorful.

Sliver G.

Yelp
I got the house special lasagna. It was ready very quickly and a large serving. For the price it was it was good but I had expected more textual difference. Would enjoy as a quiet place to sketch if I was local but I don't think I'll be going out of my way again. Wish I got thier fresh pasta and Gelato instead

Catina S.

Yelp
This food is made for students. Real "foodies" should by-pass this fare. We didn't even finish our meal, boxed it up for the dog and left mad about the wasted $$

C K.

Yelp
So delicious!! So fresh and tasty. Gnocchi, paparadelle and bolognese! Love that it's a casual dining room.

Lyzza T.

Yelp
Ordered here for the first time and got it to-go! Oh boy! Everything was delish! I will come back, and try more of their stuff!

Jack R.

Yelp
Came here to get their pasta and sauce to go and also added some other things due to the cheaper prices. Their homemade pasta was a homerun. Their bolognese sauce was very greasy and honestly tasted like a sloppy joe with that tomato sauce, but less tasty and more plain. Their strawberry Panna cotta was good. Their meatball was not good. It had this weird texture and slimy flavor to it. Like canned spam rolled into a meatball. I would just try another sauce and buy their homemade pasta next time.

A Y.

Yelp
Maybe quality suffers with takeout orders? Our Pasta bolognese was dry; the pasta noodles had very little sauce. Same with the sausage & mushroom pasta. Although we asked for & they confirmed we were getting ribbons of tagliatelle pasta, we got corkscrew pasta instead. Taste for both was just ok. Maybe you just have to eat in.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Love the place when it firsts open, but now lacks quality, flavor, and seriously needs to train your college student employees about the hospitality industry... we were served reheated food and the past was overcooked...

Ryan F.

Yelp
Ordered at 6:15, served at 7:13. Mine was ravioli that only requires you to boil the pasta, sliced tomatoes, capers and shredded cheese. It should not take nearly an hour. Objectively, it probably tasted fine, but when you're inconvenienced, food is bound to taste differently. Wont be back.

Rose C.

Yelp
The Gnocchi with sauce was very small portion for an overpriced $18 dish. The restaurant made the dish so saucy to make it look like you're getting a lot of food. But really you're not! We ordered an entrée not an appetizer! So please get the portions right. If the portion served was from a fancy restaurant, it may be expected. But this place is nowhere fancy. It's a fast casual eatery where you order and pay your food at the counter. Totally disappointed!!!

Simon L.

Yelp
Line: no line on Sunday lunch Parking: there is residential area parking a few blocks away Service: self serve utensils, quick We really love the pasta here. The texture is just right and the food always comes out quick.

Samantha C.

Yelp
Fresh homemade pasta! I love when a restaurant does homemade pasta - you can really taste the difference. We got the tagliatelle with pasticciata, pappardelle with pesto, meat lasagna, and the polpetta cassone. I really enjoyed my tagliatelle with pasticciata sauce! The hot bowl of noodles was chewy and the sauce was a nice blend of Bolognese and béchamel crème. The pesto was super basil-y, and you can definitely tell they make it in-house because no other pesto is as flavorful. However, I was disappointed by the lasagna since it came old cold! We did arrive at 9 pm so I understand why it would be, but it could have easily been popped in the microwave and reheated. The cassone was good, but nothing compared to the pasta. The portions were huge and it's super affordable! It's a great place for college students on a budget.

Christine F.

Yelp
First time having housemade pasta and this is pretty good for it being my first time! I had the pappardelle with bolognese sauce. I am honestly not a fan of red sauce but I wanted to give it a try at this place. I certainly don't regret it! One plate was honestly enough for me and for the price of it, it wasn't too bad. I like how you are able to order upfront then sit down and wait for your food to be served at your table. The inside of the store is also cute and you are able to watch them make fresh pasta (sadly they didn't make it when I was there). Parking wise, College Ave is indeed a busy street but there is a parking lot nearby and free parking starts at 6pm which was great since I came by at that time! Overall, a great experience for food. Would definitely come by again!

Yelp
What in the world is "pink sauce"??? The gluten free options for delivery are the most confusing ever. Where in the past they included specific descriptions like Bolognese and such, now they give limited and vague options of "pink sauce". What is it exactly???

Katelyn K.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice but to be honest the food was mid. While the noodle texture was nice the sauce lacked flavor and salt. Nothing you couldn't make at home
