The 33 Best Restaurants in Kansas City | Eater

"While a bit of a drive from the city center, the Italian Sausage Company is a necessary pilgrimage for any lover of spicy sausages or carefully crafted Italian deli sandwiches (cold or hot). Try the No. 7 — a panoply of Italian meats and cheeses teetering dangerously on a plush, seeded loaf — or the No. 22, featuring pastrami, salami, burrata, red-wine-infused olives, and local chile oil made by J. Chang Kitchen. A spring 2024 expansion added dine-in space. Know before you go: The No. 7 can be ordered as a “half loaf” or “whole loaf.” If you go with the latter, you can split it with a friend or save half for leftovers (it keeps well in the fridge)." - Liz Cook

Google
Not your average sandwich shop. Sandwiches are bigger than your hand. So big one can hardly fit it into their mouth! Delicious, quality Italian deli. Additionally their Italian sausage is great quality. Great spot to visit and enjoy some great food.

Abigail Lee

Google
My daughter and son live in North Casey and wanted to take me to one of their favorite places. It did not disappoint! Not only did they have fresh food, sandwiches, drinks, etc. They have authentic Italian food/groceries for purchase. I like how the back room looks like someone's living room. Quick service, food was great, plenty of choices... Would definitely recommend.

Google
Hidden gem. Absolutely immaculate Vodka Chicken Parm sandwich. The sandwich was huge and all the ingredients tasted great. Very unassuming restaurant but don’t be fooled, top tier quality.

Google
We have had so many sandwiches, my favorite is the #3. Spicy and delicious. This time we had the Chop #25 and #29. Both were great and I would The chop #25, has so much flavor!! And you get everything in every bit. The rapini was great with Porchetta. Really nice pairing on #29.

Google
I had high hopes for this spot. I went in set on a chicken Parm. Saw them on social media, and I said this spot looks fantastic. Nope. Service was great, but I waited close to 10, 15 minutes and as long as the wait was, this sandwich should've been piping hot. It was not. My cutlets were lukewarm, room temp at best and they also tasted like they had been fried In old grease. Disappointed. Again, service, great food... Not so much. It was a 15 dollar , cold , chicken Parm sandwich. Oof.

Google
This was my Wife and I's first time eating here and we were very excited to try it as we've heard great things. As soon as i took my first bite from my #2 Sandwich I saw mold spots on the side of the bread and spat out my bite. I'm not sure if they check the Bread here at all but i would encourage anyone dining here to check for mold spots on their bread. I'm pretty sure i ingested some mold so it's safe to say i'm skipping lunch today. I had to call them 4 times to get an answer and when they finally picked up they seemed to not really care all too much and treated it as a regular occurrence because of the "fresh bread" offering me a refund without offering any sort of remake first. First and Last time here for us.

Google
The #7 is the type of Italian sandwich I’ve been searching for my whole life. It’s perfect. I can’t wait to come back. Their “half sub” portion is massive, big enough to split with someone or take leftovers home.

Justin Arnold

Google
Fantastic sandwich shop with huge portions! I had the #7 half loaf and made it spicy. My son got the chicken parm. Both sandwiches were delicious. Definitely recommend getting a sandwich here.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! Once inside, there is a whole variety of tasty sandwich selections to choose from. I ordered the #7 (half) which has all of the delicious, fresh meats that you find with Italian sandwiches. The bread was amazing. And, for a half of sandwich, you could easily split it between 2-3 people. If you choose a full loaf, you can feed a whole family! It was an absolute delight. My two dining partners each got something different. One got the hot Italian sausage which he swears by. It looked amazing! The other got a Reuben and said it was the best Reuben sandwhich that he has ever had. Definitely give this place a whirl if you are up North. Better yet, make it a destination restaurant. You won't be sorry!

Yelp
It's good-- just barely making the four-star mark. I think I'm still trying to find my perfect sando on their menu though. I've tried the #1 and #3, and they just left something to be desired. The #1 came on bread that was a little dry/stale, and the #3 wasn't spicy at all. I do enjoy that they let you add baked eggplant onto any sandwich, and they don't skimp on the cured meats! Just FYI, the menu online is not the full menu they have in the restaurant, so the location is worth a visit if you have time.

Yelp
Woah! The food we had was really delicious and I'm already planning what I'm ordering next time. Which will absolutely include the Alfredo Chicken Cheese Loaf. The space it self was eclectic, social, and friendly. Things ran efficiently during a lunch rush and the customer service was excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Growing up in New York, I had to see if it was anything like the delis I was used to! And it did not disappoint! The bread really is one of the highlights, fluffy and light but not too much! Meats and veggies and sauces combine to highlight each other so you're left with a perfect sandwich
google avatar

Yelp
The Italian Sausage company currently expanded and now they have dining area. The sandwiches are FANTASTIC. If you're a salad lover like me you will love the salads here. Great service, good food and just a fantastic little hidden gem that you must try. My favorite is the Philly Cheesesteak

Yelp
Come hungry, leave happy. Making some of the freshest and most flavorful Italian deli sandwiches I have ever had. They recently expanded their space to offer dine in seating. The space is welcoming with beautiful decor and even offering outdoor seating. You can tell this family owned business treats everyone like family. They take pride in how they interact with customers and put a ton of love into their food. The menu is full of variety and I can't wait to visit again. Also available at Kauffman Stadium (section 234) & Arrowhead (section 134)

Yelp
This place doesn't miss. Anything on the menu is awesome. #7 with hot peppers is the best Italian sub in KC hands down. Reuben is arguably best in KC. It's all awesome.

Yelp
Did you hear about the Danish dude who walked into an Italian deli and ordered up some Polish sausage with a side of sauerkraut? Well, me neither! On the other hand, I did hear of a Danish dude who walked into The Italian Sausage Companies new restaurant today. And with nothing better to do this Danish dude ordered up a number 37. So, you say you've never heard of the number 37, well pay attention then! They take a Turano roll and fill it with Italian beef that's been slow roasted, you have the option of sweet peppers, or hot giardiniera, you can get it wet or dry with a side au jus. I ordered mine with the spicy giardiniera dry. When I picked it up, it was wet, and messy and it was out of this world! I did pour some of the au jus on it and it made it even messier. So, if you should come in and decide you want this sandwich wet, I would suggest you bring a bath towel with you. To compliment this wonderful sandwich, I had a nice side salad of pasta and cheese and tomatoes and all kinds of good stuff. This was their Friday special on their new menu, on Thursday they have a cheesesteak sandwich! They have a new menu so take some time and look it over! If you believe in supporting local, The Italian Sausage Company it's just about everything you could want in supporting a local company a couple with kids have turned a dream into a really nice restaurant. Well done Joe and Michelle! Well done indeed! Stuffing my face with a great sandwich on a Friday night at The Italian Sausage Co!

Yelp
The first time here the place was very small and really only a picnic table outside. But the food was amazing. One of the best mild Italian sandwiches I have had in the area. Brought one home to my husband and now he secretly goes to this place on his own to reward himself. The service is friendly. Since then we have been back again and again. Secret about this place is their tiramisu. So good and you get a large piece. I have family that comes in from KS who ask for it and love it. I wish they would update their FB page more. I want to add they have remodeled and added indoor seating. Happy about this especially for winter months. Try this place. It's a gem on North Oak. Gladstone is beginning to be a food mecca!
google avatar

Enrique T.

Yelp
Me and my wife ate here today for lunch, I got the #71 the Schwartz special, and my wife got the #13 chicken Spiedini sausage, they were amazing, we even got a big piece of tiramisu to take home and it's probably the best Tiramisu we have had. The people here are very very nice and the menu is big, cannot wait to try something new. Definitely have to give it a try
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
This food was great. Amazing to be honest. However. It was 16 dollars for the Friday special, the Italian beef and it was quite a bit smaller than expected for the price. Smaller than any of their other sandwiches for more money. It was worth it if you're flush like that - I wish I was!

Yelp
Second time having there sandwiches and they are super delicious. Soft bread with tons of Italian flavor, never been inside but the food is amazing

Jenni M.

Yelp
Italian sausage company responded and their lies are actually making me lower my review even more. They gave an excuse that I called in a to go order -THIS IS A LIE SO MAKES ME ACTUALLY UPSET WITH THE COMPANY. I DID NOT call in a to go order. I didn't know what I wanted until I got to the location. I ordered at the counter. Don't gaslight your customers why your sandwiches have went downhill. Did you perhaps give me someone else's to go order instead of making my sandwich (That I ordered when I arrived the business) fresh??? I didn't call in a to go, you're saying the sandwich came from the cooler so you're basically admitting that you're prepping sandwiches ahead of time and giving people old sandwiches from the cooler. I loved the OG Italian Sausage Co but I fear their expansion has caused them to start using short cuts that affect the quality of the product . I ordered a 22 - which I've had several times before and loved. It's came out soggy and the bread was very cold. My guess is that they've started prepping sandwiches ahead of time and refrigerating them. Not what I'm looking for in an almost $20 sandwich. A sandwich that has Aoli, vinegar, and oil on it needs to be made fresh and if you're charging customers $16 +tips for it I don't think that's too much to ask.

Yelp
This is such a gem of a place ! You can get Italian goods and also order subs ! I got the #22 which was delicious and didn't disappoint. The service was super quick and great! There is some benches outside where you can eat for your food. My friend and I took it to our car as it was a bit cold outside the day we visited. I've already been back again because I loved my sandwich so much.

Richard S.

Yelp
It was our first visit there today. But, it sure as heck won't be our last. There were six in our party. Our tastes were wildly diverse too. I went for the NUMBER SEVEN, the flagship of their fleet. It was delicious. I got a half sandwich and its was enormous. I took three fourths of it home for nighttime "piggy" attacks. My wife went for the hot dog with all the trimmings. She did let me have a tiny bite and it was delicious too. The rest if the party went for the meat ball sandwich, Rueben and a NUMBER EIGHT. Everyone wants to go back soon. I'm really tempted to go for the hot dog like the wife did but I've gotta admit, another #7 will be hard to abandon. The place is very clean and bright. There are tables and booths available and outdoor seating too.

Lauren T.

Yelp
Great vegetarian options- their #6 (which is like a caprese) and their Eggplant Vodka are both to die for. My kids love their grilled cheese- it's super cheesy!

Yelp
Ordered picked up from The Italian Sausage Co. yesterday after work, lady on the phone was hella friendly and happy to help. Quickly ordered my food and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes which it was. Pickup was easy, the place itself is small but has cool decore and some peppers and things you can buy. The food was A1. I got the #13 Chicken Speidini Sausage sandwich and my wife got the #1 prosciutto sandwich. The chicken speidini was beyond fire. I ordered thinking I would take half for work tomorrow, nah. That sausage was gone in about 3 minutes flat. It was perfectly seasoned with nothing overpowering each ingredient. Alfredo sauce was just enough. The bun is SOFT which is my favorite type. Mucho props on this. Prosciutto sandwich I only tried a bite of, it was about a 7/10 for me and my wife gave it the same. All the ingredients and meat was delicious but the bread was a little too hard and randomly soft in spots. Happens sometimes but overall still a good sandwich. Only gave 4 stars because of the bread & they were out of take home sausages; although that's my fault not theirs. They make em fresh on Tuesday's and sell out quick so gotta get em while their hot. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
This has to be one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! Small mom and pop shop that was super fast and puts out perfect sandwiches. Definitely worth stopping in at least one a week.
google avatar

Colleen L.

Yelp
They're not normally open on Sunday's but they just happened to be yesterday so I had the opportunity to check it out. They are a really small deli. You can't eat inside but there are a few tables outside that you might be able to grab. They do have a few staples that you can buy-pasta, sauces, etc. and pints of Berry Rae's. I ordered the limited time offering-#71. The #71 features one pound of local peppered pastrami and wagyu corned beef, kosher stone ground mustard, on fresh Rye bread baked in a local Orthodox synagogue. This sandwich Is served with a kosher half sour NY dill pickle. First off, the sandwich is huge. I'm still eating it. It was delicious. I have zero complaints. We did leave because the outdoor tables were occupied but we enjoyed our sandwiches at Strange Days brewery. I will definitely return but I plan to try one of the everyday sandwiches.

Craig L.

Yelp
The meatball sammich still impresses. The chop was disappointing to be honest. Sooo much italian dressing. The sandwich was soaked in it. The only thing I tasted was italian dressing. Oh well. Lots of other good options.

Jon M.

Yelp
So new location. Nice spot. Friendly employees. But not the same level of service or quality of food. Sausages were still good. Chicken parm sandwich Tha we waited 30 minutes after getting our other 3 sandwiches for the 32 that was Gristle Chicken. So we called our order in. Then 20 minutes later we arrived per their schedule. 3 of our 5 sandw9ches were ready and we sat down to wait for the last two. The gal up front kept telling us it was coming while 3 customers who arrived after us and did not advance order. Their food came out pretty quickly. Sat for about another 25 minutes when the cook came out and asked us what we ordered. He had numbers written on his hand and could not figure out what we had ordered. Seriously disorganized. Very disappointed. Hope they fix their issues as other than some gristle chicken...it was still good.

Natalie W.

Yelp
Tiny restaurant, big flavor. We had the chicken parm with vodka sauce sandwich and the Tuscan chicken sausage sandwich. I would recommend both. We will be back!
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
Wow what an absolutely incredible hidden gem. These folks are serious, the #1 was the best sandwich I've had in some time and it's clear they just understand quality food. I'm just sad I don't live in KC (okay no I'm not but still) so I can properly go through their menu. This is worth a little drive, they'll be in much fancier digs soon, I wish them nothing but success.
google avatar

Kerbie D.

Yelp
So.. great food. Awesome ingredients. Didnt get the girls name up front but, she was amazing. My partner got the rueden and loved it. It had mustard instead of thousand island... there wasn't a bite left. We ended with the berry tiramisu. I didn't leave a crumb!
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
I'm giving three stars because they seem very disjointed in the ordering process and maybe it's because there were several people in there trying to grab lunch... So I will return to see if it's improved on off hours. The meatball grinder is very tasty. The Italian sausage sandwich also very good. But what's drawing Mayeye from what I saw other patrons get are the cold subs. That's Up Next!
google avatar

Shayna S.

Yelp
Great fresh food! The pricing is a little high but the quality of the meals make up for it. Had a talk with the owner, very personable! They are planning on growth and menu additions. It isn't a "dine in" place as of now but my understanding is that it will be soon! Highly recommend this family owned establishment.
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
#7 spicy. Incredible is the word that comes to mind. This is a 1/2 sandwich. Awesome taste and texture, I can eat this for at least 2 meals..... Run, don't walk. It's so totally worth it. AND they're expanding to a double spot 2 doors down! Breakfast, some pasta, seating for around 40 or so. I can't wait!!!! All their sandwiches are great and sausages are even better!!
google avatar

Keely H.

Yelp
AHHHHMAZING! You must try this place! I don't eat red meat and my husband got me to try it .., and loved it... he got the #71 with wagyu beef- sooo much flavor! We got their chicken spending brats- holy smokes! They were huge and delicious! We took home the honey goat cheese imported from Italy- absolutely amazing! My husband said that was a top fave of his hands down! We will be back!

Scott B.

Yelp
This place is amazing! This rings absolutely true as a classic Italian deli with an amazing selection of both hot and cold sandwiches. Their Italian sausage sandwiches are the best I have found in the city, their muffaletta is flavorful and beautifully put together, and their chopped sandwich is also wonderful. The people working there are kind and positive. This is my favorite sandwich shopping in Kansas City. They can be busy and have a small area for dining in so be prepared if you're going at lunch or dinner times.
google avatar

Monica P.

Yelp
Not sure this is open anymore. We showed up and place was closed ‍We checked the hours and went when they were to be opened but alas we regret it was not opened. Hope to try again
google avatar

Adrian H.

Yelp
Great food nice service and I had fun when inside. Can't wait to go again. Fresh sausage for sale I want to try the soup.
google avatar

Leah O.

Yelp
This is a Northland staple. It's a smaller space so expect mostly carry out but with picnic benches outside for nicer weather. The staff have always been really friendly and helpful if you have any questions. They've also been fast in preparing your food -- we once placed an order for 6 sandwiches and it took them less than 30 minutes to fill during lunch time. They have a small grocery selection and I think sell the sauce they use and Italian sausage if I remember correctly. They also sell Tiramisu which has become one of my favorites. I usually order the #12. I don't think you can go wrong with any sandwich!
google avatar

JD W.

Yelp
I was cryin' when I met you Now I'm tryin' to forget you Love is sweet misery I was cryin' just to get you Now I'm dyin' 'cause you're closed on Monday. These tears are real. Still giving you 5 stars (Cause food is good), but please know that you left me momentarily draped over my steering wheel dramatically like some sort of unfed angsty-emo whatever. Though I did discover that there's a used bookstore next door so that's cool.
google avatar

Carrie Q.

Yelp
I found this place from someone who posted about it on Facebook and decided to take the drive to try it out. I had the Chicken Spedini with Alfredo sauce and it was delicious. Typically, chicken sausage becomes dry and hard to chew, but this was amazingly juicy and full of flavor! My husband had the mild sausage with provolone and marinara and he is still raving about it today. We took a ball of frozen pizza dough home and 2 trays of mild Italian sausage that we can't wait to try. We will definitely be making the trip to get more! There's only a few places to eat outside, but everyone there is super friendly and nice! Excited to have found this gem.
google avatar

Duke R.

Yelp
Such nice people and the Hot Italian sausage sandwich was excellent. Also they sell Excellent Giardiniera. Looking forward to buying some of their hot Italian sausage and taking it home to try and recipes.
google avatar

Zhané W.

Yelp
Such a cute little shop. It definitely gives small family owned business vibes. Food was delicious and service was great. 10/10
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Wonderful new addition to the Northland @italiansausageco !!! Don't let the strip mall deter you from this great food! Everything is handmade and you can taste the difference. We got the spicy sausage #12, Italian meat sandwich #5, and the meatball #17. All were good and I can't wait to try all the others. The owners are kind and will help you order, just ask. You will have to take your food to go, there is no place to eat inside.
google avatar

Nina L.

Yelp
This place is so good. Price is a little high but that's to be expected with inflation. I have tried most of their sandwiches and they're all pretty good. You can't go wrong with any. I like that they have Betty Rae's ice cream too. Recommend.

K M.

Yelp
Don't question it - just take yourself here for a positively delicious Italian sandwich! Family owned and operated. Buy some sausages to take home for your grill, too. This is a definitive YES!
google avatar

Brennen H.

Yelp
Best food get the #7 or #12 so good The cashier lady is awesome and is so nice when thinking about what to get
google avatar

Marcus S.

Yelp
One of the best sandwich spots in the city. Huge sandwiches, great ingredients, old KC feel!
google avatar

Carolyn M.

Yelp
The food is amazing at this little sandwich shop. Made to order. You have a large selections of hot or cold sandwiches. There is a veggie option also that is so good. You can also buy sausage to cook later, desserts, dry pasta, olive oil, canned soda, chips. Can't wait till the expand to a sit-down eatery just a couple doors away.
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
Food is grrrrreat. I've never dined in, but the staff is friendly. I love the "hidden gem" character of this place. They make chicken spedini sausages, and that's what I'm ordering next time....
google avatar

Kristi G.

Yelp
This little deli is absolutely amazing! My stepson introduced us to this place, and I swear to you, I absolutely must come here when we come to visit. The service is fantastic and the young lady at the front is so so friendly! I always get the number seven and it is huge!. This holds up extremely well in the fridge and is possibly even better than next day. I don't think most people think sandwiches, so delicious would come from such a tiny little deli. But trust me, you absolutely will not walk away disappointed with this place. You will, however, have a full belly and a huge smile on your face! 10 out of 10 would recommend!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Everything is incredible. Truly. These are the nicest people and have the best food. Call ahead to place your order if you don't want to wait.
google avatar

Kristi F.

Yelp
#16 hot sausage with red sauce and cheese. Sausage was tender and delicious! Cheese was melted and creamy topped with a bit of Parmesan. Will definitely return to try the "everything" sauce.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
An absolute must! So flavorful and cooked to perfection! The #11 is my go to. Service is quick! The place is small so I usually grab mine to go, but they do have picnics tables to sit on outside. Yum yum yum!!
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Picked up sandwiches for dinner from here. FYI: there are no tables to eat here- it is take out only. We weren't sure what to order, so we got some suggestions and the employee happily answered all of our questions. We ended up with the muffuletta, the 13, and the 11. All were delish and we will be back! I will also grab some fresh made sausages next time.

Craig M.

Yelp
Fantastic sandwiches. Great people. You have to carry it out, no place to eat there. (There are a couple of old picnic tables outside - with a view of the parking lot.) We find that 1 sandwich feeds the both of us. Highly recommended.
