In the middle of a non-descript strip shopping center in soulless Northern Virginia, between an old, small Giant grocery store (really bad) and a CVS (even worse), is a gem of an import store - The Italian Store.
This place has all authentic Italian ingredients that you could want. Sausages, cheese, pastas, bakery items, chocolates, wine, prepared foods like mozzarella salads and even dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves - of course, this is Greek food but, hey, if you want only the best, you MUST include something Greek, right???) - this is the place if you want to impress people with top quality imported food items. They also have frozen pasta dishes like lasagna and other Italian specialties.
For me, I go to The Italian Store for the pizzas and the sub sandwiches. The pizzas are huge and the sauce is great. The crust, while not crispy, is good enough to keep me coming back. The large size is so big that it's hard to get it through my door without tilting the box! Definitely enough to satisfy the biggest eaters.
The sandwiches are my current obsession and I just had a large Milano on a soft role with mayo. It was my dinner. The myriad of flavors all combine to create pure ecstasy. The hot peppers, the sweet peppers, the oil & vinegar, the shredded lettuce, onions, tomatoes - all fantastic!
So, why did I give The Italian Store only 3 stars? This was a tough call for me. Their food definitely rates higher. But, I hate to say it, the customer service AND the post-Covid operation of the store, really drag the place down. The customer service is really pretty bad. Nobody who works there seems to care about customers. I know they are real busy most times but the bad customer service is just not excusable. You cannot take the reason for your success for granted too long before it turns your success into tepid, if any, loyalty. For me, I only go to The Italian Store a few times a year because I do not want to deal with the poor customer experience.
Now about the post-Covid operation of the store. I understand that the pandemic created a need to safeguard both customers and workers. But you can only buy pre-made sandwiches now. I bought one ONCE because, when I got home, it was soggy and old. Not worth the drive for that. Now, I call ahead and order a special one (they will take special orders in advance over the phone). It just makes my life more difficult and, consequently, it reduces the number of visits - and my desire to go - to The Italian Store. For me, if this does not change soon, I will not be going back to this place.
So - bottom line - go to The Italian Store. You'll like it. You'll love the pizza and you'll love the Milano sub sandwiches. But, must remember to order ahead so you can get a fresh sandwich AND you will have to put up with poor customer service. Get in and out fast, that's the way to do it here.
