The Ivy Asia’s Racist Video Fits Restaurant Menu Full of Stereotypes | Eater London

"A recently released promotional video from the restaurant drew widespread condemnation for overtly racist and Orientalist stereotyping: it depicted women dressed as geishas struggling into a rickshaw chauffeured by an elderly Asian man portrayed as physically inept, a warrior ‘hero’ rescuing the women, their indecipherable vocalisations (likened to racist comedy sketches), and a dining room full of white patrons staring as they burst into the venue with shopping bags. The clip, which also promoted a menu grouping called the “Zen Stack” (a Buddhist-titled assortment of largely Japanese dishes), had comments disabled, was deleted from the restaurant’s channels on 8 August, and prompted first a brief and then a longer apology admitting naivety and cultural insensitivity and announcing an internal review — but offering little explanation. Critics, including community writers and restaurant journalists, called out the clip as symptomatic of a broader pattern at the parent company: reliance on Orientalist décor and flattened, fetishising menu descriptors, a lack of internal pushback during production, and profiting from caricatured depictions of Asian cultures even as the group continues to open new locations. Prominent responses highlighted both the specific offensive choices (from “wonton” fonts and tired tropes to the geisha and rickshaw imagery) and the wider harm given recent spikes in anti-Asian racism." - Adam Coghlan

A special thank you to Yasmine who saved my birthday celebration from being a complete disaster after our party was seated next to the incredibly loud DJ, despite me requesting a quiet table when I booked the reservation nearly three weeks ago. One of our party had a hearing impairment and I am noise sensitive. I appreciate it's a loud restaurant but there were definitely quieter tables, despite staff trying to tell me there weren't, followed by lots of not very helpful "I'm sorrys" but little action and a 'like it or lump it' attitude: "We're very busy!". The lovely Yasmine took charge; moved us to a quieter table and turned down the overhead speaker. I resented having to pay £42 in service charge after this - unless the majority goes to Yasmine! I sincerely hope Yasmine will be rewarded. She is a huge asset to your restaurant and should be acknowledged and praised for her empathy, kindness and helpfulness. Thanks Yasmine. In the end, Yasmine saved our evening; the food was wonderful and we ended up having a lovely evening after a few drinks to calm down!

We went to The Ivy Asia last night 18 th November and a lovely evening We was looked after by Megg she was fabulous very attentive. She made the best cocktails and we really felt we was looked after. Excellent service I hope we get a chance to go back in December to get looked after by Megg again . We wasn’t planning on having a dessert but Meg recommended the doughnuts and wow, they were so so good with popping candy on top. Great shout out. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Food was great! The unique atmosphere was the original draw to this place. We received attentive service too. It was very busy and loud but that's expected. Maybe not a great date place but for a family celebration or casual get together, this fits the bill 🥂

The Ivy Asia has a warm design and obviously a well choreographed theme culminating in your permanent armoured samurai urinal buddy, always ready with an unexpected greeting! Probably the most welcoming and simultaneously, intimidating ablution experience for any man. We had the duck and the lamb curry, both tasty even though the curry portion was a stretch to be referred to as a main course. A pleasant experience all round.

We had a mixed experience. The service was genuinely friendly and unpretentious, and the overall ambiance was pleasant. However, the quality of the sushi rolls was disappointing – very much supermarket level. We tried three different rolls and none of them were great: they were tiny, unevenly cut, and lacking in finesse or flavour. The dessert, on the other hand, was tasty and nicely theatrical, and probably saved the meal from being a complete let-down. Would I come back? Possibly, but definitely not if I were specifically looking to enjoy good sushi.

I had a pleasant experience at The Ivy Asia, Chelsea restaurant, where I was seated promptly despite arriving early. The reception staff was friendly and welcoming, and Agnes delivered great customer service, particularly when checking on me to ensure the meal was satisfactory. The food was well presented and flavorful, and the doughnut dessert was outstanding. I went for the Samurai Dinner set Menu. The ambience and decor were impressive, and the toilets were impeccably clean with a pleasant scent. However, the stall seating I was assigned near the kitchen felt cramped, and as a solo diner, I was told tables were mostly reserved for two, which would have been best not mentioning for a first time visitor. Table clearing and dish changes were slow at times, and I noticed inconsistent hygiene among the chefs where one wore gloves, but the other didn’t. Despite these slight drawbacks, I’d return and highly recommend The Ivy Asia for its vibrant atmosphere, tasty offerings and good service overall.

Premium Experience Menu was fantastic. Great selection of small dishes, my favourite being the crispy duck. Staff were super friendly and interior was beautiful. 10/10

Ivy Asia offers a great selection of varied Asian cuisines, cocktails and wine! I celebrated my birthday there for reservation for 2, we waited 15 minutes to be seated but we were able to enjoy drinks at the bar. The restaurant offers two types of food menus: Set menu - appetiser, starter, main and dessert at an extra cost of £5. As well as single food item orders with a wide selection of appetisers, small plates, large plates and sharing plates etc. The food, drinks and atmosphere was fantastic! However, our waitress Andrea could improve on her customer service mannerisms to ensure all guests have an equal welcoming experience!
