3 Best Day Trips from Charleston, South Carolina | Condé Nast Traveler

"The name isn’t an empty affectation—this restaurant actually happens to be one of the South’s best jazz clubs . Accordingly, tables are arranged in rows, so that diners can better keep up with the music, and portraits of the greats line the walls; otherwise, there's little to distract from the show. Diners are mostly music fans, though there are a few foodies sprinkled in—the menu rightfully represents New Orleans , the birthplace of jazz, with a spicy gumbo and a Bourbon Street shrimp (popcorn-style, and served with alligator sausage). The food alone is enough of a reason to come, but the bonus of being serenaded by world-class jazz performances makes it a must-try for visiting music fans." - Paul Oswell

We went with some friends to see a jazz show. For me, the stake was overcooked. The side dishes were 2 carrot halves, 2 asparagus stalks and 5 fingerling potato halves. A tablespoon of some sort of grave. For the cost I would expect a better quality meal. My wife loved her fish. The after dinner desert was fantastic The show, however, was fantastic. Great job.

I had a great time! This was my first visit to Jazz Corner. The food was fantastic! I hate that I didn't get a photo. The grilled pork chop was delicious! Very nice atmosphere. Great date night spot! Alphonso Horne and the Gotham Kings were phenomenal! 🎻🎺🎹🎶🎙️

What an absolutely fabulous experience! My sisters and I had such a wonderful time last night at the Jazz Corner. Our server, Plami, was fantastic. Plami was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. We will be talking about that food for the rest of our lives! Delicious! The show was breathtaking with such talented musicians that made us feel like we were at a private concert. A few of the musicians even came over to our table to chat after the show and thanked us for coming. This was one of the best meals of my life, with flawless service, and incredible music. We will definitely be back and will highly recommend to everyone we know. Thank you for an unforgettable evening!

Jazz lovers rejoice! Every time I travel I always find me a Jazz spot to check out and this place did not disappoint. The atmosphere was perfect, entertainment was amazing and food was delish. Service was awesome as well, food came out quick but was still hot and fresh and very tasty. I will certainly come back whenever I am in Hilton again.

Just wow. Great food, exceptional atmosphere and the service was off the charts. Our waitress Adra is a Master. She was meticulous in getting our order and covering my dietary restrictions.

We had 8pm reservations , staff was very friendly and on top of everything ! Asian spring rolls were delicious, sea scallops were ok, filet mignon was perfect , we loved the show ! Can’t wait to come back !!

As I was in town visiting, I knew I had to visit a jazz club and found this hidden gem. I was the last to arrive before the show began, but as I was sitting at the bar, it was easy to get seated. The club is quite cozy, but makes for a perfect live music setting! I started off with a rum punch, which I found underwhelming. Before I even got halfway in my drink, it was practically water so I ended up ordering a whiskey, which made up for it. I decided on wedge salad and the BBQ duck with a blueberry bourbon sauce. That wedge salad was off the chain! There was so much flavor packed into that dish. The dressing itself was so flavorful, it honestly had me wanting to eat just a big plate of that and I would have been good for the evening! Between the crispy bacon on that dish to the perfect proportions of every item on that plate, it was outstanding! The only drawback was the tomatoes, as they had no sweetness. They were tart, most likely because they were picked too early, but had those been sweet, that dish would have been next level. Now, I was really looking forward to trying the duck but that blueberry bourbon sauce was so clumpy and off putting, I couldn't even eat the dish! I was scraping the sauce to the side as it was plastered all over that plate. They ended up cooking a new one for me without the sauce, which was palatable. The duck was perfectly cooked and the risotto with edamame succotash were great too. However, the only thing lacking was the salt and seasoning. Still by far, better than with the sauce, but had some fresh herbs and salt been added, that dish would have been stellar. The music was phenomenal and it transcended the overall great vibes of the place! Great staff, great scene and will definitely be coming to visit again!

Google
Good relaxing place to dine and wine. Good selection of food and drinks but food was ok. Good presentation of food but they need a better chef to serve customers. Ordered alligator bites and they were more like hush puppies rather than gator bites, Fillet tip appetizer was cooked way too much and it was too tough to eat, We sent it back and got better in the second round. their special pork was also overcooked and so dry and tough to eat... Service and staff are great and we enjoyed live jazz music

Yelp
Fantastic first time at the Jazz Corner celebrating a friend's birthday. Deas Guys were very entertaining and covered a variety of styles--after kicking off with jazz, they moved into Motown and kept the crowd engaged. The classic Aviation cocktail was solid enough to order another, though pricy at $15. Wide ranging menu provided lots of options for our group. We started with the complimentary pimento cheese dip with toasts and shared the burrata plate with quality accompaniments. The Gorgonzola tortellini was creamy and flavorful, though I was slightly thrown by the cold bruschetta topping after receiving it in the dark. The carrot cake provided a sweet finishing touch!

Yelp
Had another delightful evening, featuring the Martin Lesch Band (boy, can he tickle the ivories!). The music was spectacular, and the food NEVER disappoints! I also hope many patrons add a donation onto their final bills to support music education in SC. The Caesar with white anchovies was awesome! The Wedge special was equally yummy. Entrees included toasted ravs, Gorgonzola tortellini, braised short rib & my fav, the duck with blueberry bbq sauce! The chai tea was pretty epic, as was the crème brûlée.

Yelp
First of all, I am so upset that I do not have any pictures of the food! It arrived in the dark after the show had already started so I didn't want to be rude and shine my light and such when the band was playing. But the food was just purrrrrfect! Oddly enough, Jazz Corner is the only other restaurant that knocked it out the park for me besides Eleven Madison Park in NYC. We received the warmest greeting at the door. I don't know who the lovely woman was but she made us feel like she was waiting for us to arrive! The restaurant is beautiful! You step into a whole old school Jazz vibe. Mood instantly set! The seats are small to super cozy in our section. You will become friends with your neighbors. It's a small place and they have packed butts in seats for sure but listen besides tight seating, there is NOTHING not to love about the Jazz Corner. Service service service. Our server was on top of every single thing before we knew we needed a thing. He kept the table clean, he refilled drinks he appeared with a perfect cadence, not annoying but enough to catch anything that we might want. A total professional! Between the two of us we ordered margarita, glass of Cabernet, fried green tomato salad, chicken & Andouille gumbo, Blackened Ahi Tuna and my husband had a beef short rib or something that was on the restaurant week menu (sorry I am a pescatarian over here, so I don't always get the meat thing right) but he said it was other worldly good. We also had pecan pie. Everything was prepared perfectly and the portions were hearty. Not over the top and certainly not a rip off. The tuna was off the charts. The Pecan pie which is typically a heavy desert was amazing, now yes. still fattening but the delivery on the palette was light. We are STILL talking about that food a week later . The band was so awesome! It just doesn't get any better than great music, great food and great service by great people! Upon exiting the restaurant, the same sweet lady took the time to ask us if we had a good time and if we enjoyed our food AND we got an email the next day thanking us for coming! We did not tell the restaurant that it was my husband's birthday but he really enjoyed all of this experience! Last but not least, the Jazz Corner supports children in the local community by blessing them with instruments and music lessons at a camp. You can donate cash or Instruments to help them with this endeavor. What's not to love?

Yelp
Love the Jazz Corner. The staff is so friendly and the musicians are all lovely. We've never had a less-than-perfect experience here. The food is great - highly recommend the swordfish, which comes with a ton of green beans and a huge mound of Gouda grits. The desserts were also amazing - my fav was the flourless chocolate cake. The carrot cake was good, but a bit too sweet for me. Def recommend if you're in town and looking for some good live music!

Yelp
This place was all about the experience, and man the performance was outstanding. Live smooth jazz after dinner--you can't beat it! We saw the Fat Tuesdays and they truly brought the New Orleans vibe. They were a standout! This is a fairly small venue with great acoustics. The seating times are staggered--I'd recommend making a reservation exactly 30 minutes before show-time, which gives ample time to order and a window of well-lit dining before the lights turn down and the show starts. Food ratings (out of 10) and comments: Calamari special: 6, a little too crunchy with not enough substance Halibut special: 8, a little spicy Prosciutto-Wrapped Jumbo Scallops: 8.5, delicious but that was not risotto--it was rice. Loved the crispy kale! Blackened Ahi Tuna: 9, "good" Would definitely return, and highly recommend an adult beverage (or 2) to enhance the experience! :)

Yelp
Let me tell you about this place! We were sad thinking we could not get tickets for 2 ppl. for our Wedding Anniversary. Miraculously, seats opened up 30 min before the 1st show. We flew over there. My husband and I had a couple give a remark that was borderline racist and the bartender jumped in and saved the day. She sat us at the bar with her and took care of us like royalty. She even made sure the band gave us a shout out and played a song just for us! The food was great and the show was terrific. The staff were top notch! Even after the show, the great treatment continued. I would come here again in a heartbeat. Thank you for making our evening!

Yelp
The way the house accommodated my uniquely abled stepmother touched my heart!! They also shouted out my dad on his 75th birthday and played him a special tune. I could cry writing this. Food, music, ambiance, but especially STAFF deserve 100 stars.

Yelp
Honestly everything about this establishment is fantastic. The food is amazing and actually for filling minus the smaller portion side. The music was amazing as well and entertaining. The service was good too

Yelp
What a sweet chill spot that we had no idea had been going since 1999. The 4 piece band was amazing. Very interactive with the crowd. The wait staff was a well oiled machine. Very attentive. They provided everything before you even realized you needed it. The food was phenomenal. We ate everything! The mixology was making those liquid libations on point. This is venue experience is a MUST DO in Hilton Head! Enjoy!

Yelp
Such an amazing jazz venue! The food and service was 10/10 and the ambiance was amazing. The jazz musicians were extremely talented!!! We celebrated our wedding anniversary and actually booked it one day in advance and it was the best decision ever! We will be going back next year!

Yelp
Varied menu of proteins and veggies. Something for every one. Seafood items are especially delicious. Excellent and speedy table service. The Jazz music is the cherry on top. Professional musicians and you are ask to limit convo to a whisper, that I loved.

Yelp
Great venue with a quaint atmosphere great food and awesome musical entertainment and excellent service. We were delighted to find this gem on Hilton Head Island. The venue is small but that makes it much better for listening to music. We would love to have a place like this in our home town. The musical talent was amazing.

Yelp
Oh heck yes! Was looking for a nice venue to enjoy jazz and to my surprised they offered a meal as well! This place did NOT I mean DID NOT disappoint! Checked boxes; - Outstanding Jazz Performers (Nightly rotations!) - High quality food and wine selection! (No complaining when the bill comes ) - Ambiance was very quaint and intimate as there were no "bad" seats in the house. - Service and reception were very very welcoming and attentive! - Parking was outstanding as there's no valet or fees! If I had to say anything negative about this place is that they will charge $25 if you bring in your own bday cake which I thought was downright shameful given the fact that people are paying top dollar for the food and tipping! Yup I would go back but, definitely wouldn't celebrate a bday there.

Yelp
OK it's expensive and tricky to get in. I don't care. This is one of the most delightful and memorable spots I have been to on vacation in a long time. It felt like a little bit of New Orleans or New York had found its way to Hilton Head. And, while expensive, the swordfish I ordered was one of the best fish dishes I have had in... the last decade maybe? It had sundried tomatoes, which made me skeptical, but this was done perfectly. And the portion was really satisfying. I'd rather pay a little more and get something really tasty and memorable that doesn't skimp on value, personally, and this was great. Cocktails were also totally on point. Menu and cocktail selection were nice, too. Service was good, knowledgeable, amicable. Ambiance - I mean it's a jazz club, what else can you ask for? Old school, in a good way. People also bothered to dress nicely, which I appreciated. It's nice to be transported to a more elegant decade. And of course the MUSIC was good! All pros. I was thrilled to learn about the role that the restaurant owners play in non-profit work and youth music programs and apparently one of the students who came up through the music program was playing with the band that night, which is super cool, and the music did not suffer for it. I could do this every night. Recommend especially for dates and proposals, but we went with my fiance's parents and that was cool, too.

Koda L.

Yelp
My husband and I went here because we recently moved to Hilton Head and were looking to celebrate a few things. The performance was phenomenal, our server was very attentive, and our food and beverages were delicious! The ambiance is small and intimate, a small show without feeling like a big performance. He said he's excited to take some of our friends when they come to visit. We had such a wonderful time.

Gwendolyn S.

Yelp
We had a wonderful evening at the Jazz Corner! The Jazz Legacy presented an evening with Billie Holliday. The lead singer was fabulous and the band was as well. We also enjoyed our dinner and the ambiance was perfect!

Brad W.

Yelp
Food, Drinks, and Music were good. However, I'm hesitant to return to this establishment for one reason. Normally, I would not complain about a fellow patron in a review, as it is not the fault of the establishment. However, this patron was established by the performers to be a regular at the establishment. This made me assume that this person and their behavior may be an expectation when visiting the club, and since tickets are bought in advance there would be no way to simply "come back when he's not there". This patron was an old man sitting in the front row being extremely inconsiderate to the other guests. Touching and grabbing attention from women who didn't want to be bothered (members of my party included, one of our party had to switch seats just so we could feel comfortable enough to focus on the show instead of worrying about what he would do next). Then when the dessert menu came out he shined the flashlight at other patrons during the performance. I observed that it upset people besides my table. He may have thought it was a joke but nobody was laughing, and besides, it's the Jazz Corner, not the Comedy Corner. I'm upset that I had to ask a waitress to tell him to stop his behavior, instead of one of them doing it on their own. His wife and family also did not do anything to try and stop him. Furthermore, the man got a special request to the band, just for being a regular. What looked like favoritism and entitlement made the establishment feel like an extremely unsafe space, especially for women. The music was good when I finally got things all sorted out, however it made it hard to truly enjoy every part of the experience when I was on edge because I was worried about my party being harassed. Unfortunately, I don't have confidence that this won't happen again considering the special treatment he got. This place came highly recommended, and I'm extremely disappointed that my experience was so poor. Two stars may be harsh (I can't give 1 star because everything else was good), but I really need this establishment and people to understand that this type of behavior should not be tolerated, even before my visit.

Yelp
Absolutely OUTSTANDING! Food superb and bar drinks great! The service staff was friendly and professional. And the ambiance was incredible, attended the Stevie Wonder tribute show with world class musicians and singers.

Yelp
Im giving 4.5 stars, but rounding up to 5 feels right. A must for your Hilton Head music and dining experience! This intimate jazz lounge offers high quality cocktails and food, where they could get away with average. The ambiance is dark and intimate. You feel like you're listening and participating alongside a group of friends. I don't know if the musicians are staples here, but they're comfortable and make the environment intimate as well. The music was superb! I had a gin martini and a boulevardier and my husband had a vieux carre and a glass of white wine. All drinks were very well-made. We started with the fried green tomato salad, which was fantastic! Flavors, textures, and freshness. I then got the scallop appetizer special, which was okay. The scallops could have been seared a bit more, to my liking, and the avocado pico didn't do it for me. Hubs got the swordfish, which was good. The butterscotch crème brûlée was delish! And it was Miss Lois' birthday, which was a fun way to experience her pride and joy. (No pics because it was too dark.)

Yelp
This is a phenomenal local gem. I believe everyone who reserves to attend has their own "check in" time to attend. Plenty of available parking. Located on the south end of the island. When you book and reserve your table you can choose where you want to sit. My wife took care of all the reservations and chose a great table for two facing the stage. I didn't really know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. We had Alex as our server who was excellent. We started off with a 1/2 bottle of Hess Cabernet for both while I started with a Bombay Sapphire martini with blue cheese olives. It was done perfectly. We then chose the pimento cheese flatbread pizza. For vegetarians (like my wife) it does come with bacon on top. My wife will sometimes make exceptions when it comes to a great time and great food. My wife had the southwestern black bean burgers which she said were the best she'd had outside of the ones she makes herself. I had the Gorgonzola Tortellini and added the grilled shrimp for an extra $12. It was worth it and excellent. Then the jazz night begins. We happened to be fortunate enough to witness Jazz royalty with the Anderson brothers who flew in from NYC to perform Cole Porter. I've never seen such talent so close up. They typically play at Birdland in NYC. When you come to the Hilton Head area, this venue is a "must see". Keep it going. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
We wanted to listen to an evening of music. We went to the 5:15 time-slot on a Friday night. The place was full. The music was very enjoyable. The food, drinks, and service were exceptional. I think that may have been the best fish dinner I've ever had. Well done. We even enjoyed sitting at the bar watching the master bartender.
google avatar

Paula Z.

Yelp
This is a great spot for a special occasion. While jazz isn't usually my top pick, we enjoyed some talented musicians who kept the improvisation balanced and enjoyable. We visited twice over the summer, though once a year feels like enough. The service was excellent, and the food was good, but given the price, there are better dining options on the island. The intimate atmosphere and perfect acoustics were a highlight. It would be nice if they included cocktail prices on the menu.
google avatar

Jess Z.

Yelp
I absolutely adored The Jazz Corner. I came here with my family for a fun night out and was not disappointed. The performance was lovely and it was fun learning a bit about jazz history. The food portions are great, I was extremely stuffed by the end. I really enjoyed the lobster tail appetizer and steak skewers. They both had sauces that paired amazingly with the meats. For my entree I tried the duck and if I were to go back I would order it again. If you're on the island, you have to make a reservation for the Jazz Corner!
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. Service is attentive and the music fantastic. Had such a great time that we went back the next night. A must place to go while in hhi.

Yelp
This place is SO amazing that I set the calendar reminder on my phone to make reservations on June 15 for August!! The seatings are staggering so the staff is very attentive but not in an annoying way. Here's the thing the food is as epic as the entertainment !!! It is top notch -five . The ambiance is cozy and the music was literally one of the highlights of our vacation. D'z Guys we're not only personable and talented but laughed when my husband started singing a little too loud. See you next year!!

Bianca M.

Yelp
The food as well as the show was excellent. I particularly loved the ambiance, a relatively small & quaint venue. The service was excellent as well. I would go back again and again.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Hilton Head. Beautiful music, lovely service, and truly fabulous food. Cannot recommend enough.

Yelp
The ambiance is TOP TIER! The food is delicious, service is great, and the entertainment is absolutely amazing. This location is pricey so it's ideal for special occasions, but wow is it a special treat!

W M.

Yelp
I love the vibe, the music and the food! I go here every year for my birthday and it always delivers. Service is always great.

John L.

Yelp
Great place especially on Sunday night Hard to get a reservation. Dee's Guys are the best. Food and service very good.
google avatar

Deborah J.

Yelp
The venue is small but oh so quaint. Our group of eleven went to the 9:00 show to see Quiana Parler with the Lavon Stevens trio. They were fabulous! We sat close to the stage with four at each table and were serenaded by each song. Our waitress was a very nice accommodating server. She was knowledgeable of the menu and shared descriptions of the evening's specials. Since it was so late, I opted for two appetizers, charcuterie board and Caesar salad. Both were very good. My husband enjoyed some mussels and the bacon wrapped scallops. Our friends at the table had the rib dinner, Caesar salad, and vegetable rolls. No one had a complaint. Our cocktails were also on point. At the end of the show we took pictures with the trio and vocalist. It was an amazing evening! We will definitely be returning here when we're in the area.
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
My husband surprised us on the last day of our vacation with this gem! The service and the food is exceptional. Then the jazz act was the icing on the cake. On special was Halibut and Ribeye. Both perfectly prepared. Following crème brûlée and coffee that knocked it out of the park! The only bad thing I have to say was how I wanted to stay longer Absolutely make it happen on your vacation to Hilton Head! Five stars
google avatar

Danielle I.

Yelp
WOW. The music and service here were fantastic! I highly suggest to make reservations as they do fill up fast, and after coming here I can see why. The food was the best I had on the Island the entire time! I started with a lemon drop martini to drink and a wedge salad with house made blue cheese dressing. For my main entree I got the prosciutto wrapped jumbo scallops that were topped with a delicious pear & apricot chutney. The chutney paired beautifully with the savory scallops and salty prosciutto. I had never had scallops prepared this way, and was so pleased with them! Honestly some of the best I ever had! The Anderson brothers were the performers for the evening, and they were exceptional! This was hands down one of my favorite experiences I had on the island. This is somewhere you can go, dress up, and enjoy some wonderful food and entertainment. I will for sure come back here again and again when visiting.
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
Dinner was fun. I know, what a strange concept, but the food was outstanding and the band and format made it a great experience. Wife had the scallops and said they ranked among her favorite. I did the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin with blueberry sauce. The food alone was terrific. The band was the Monday house band and they were entertaining, talented, and it was just a different night than most. Dinner was an hour before the show. Well worth the money and the time invested.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing experience every time! The atmosphere, the music, the food, and the service is outstanding.

This was my first time at The Jazz Corner. We had a great time, delicious food and fabulous entertainment.

Yelp
Oh my! I've been trying for years to get in here to see Deaz Guys on our Sunday during our annual week in Hilton Head. It was worth the wait. Look at this tempura lobster tail! Have you ever seen a prettier plate? Drinks and other plates were also great. Plan ahead for this night to remember!!!
google avatar

Yelp
If you've never been to a jazz club, I highly recommend. As far as this place goes, it is really nice, the music was very entertaining, and the food and service were phenomenal. The meals were all special selections you really don't find anywhere else - duck, lamb, pork, but all of it prepared in the most unexpected and unique ways. The dessets followed suit. Service was what you would expect - spot on, prife6, and super attentive. The only nit was the music was a bit louder than I liked, it did detract from the overall enjoyment of the evening. If we had been sat further from the speakers, it would have been waaay better...

Carol H.

Yelp
Surprisingly awesome food and jazz! Will certainly return!! Had a great night. The jazzers were so jazz-able!
google avatar

Bob H.

Yelp
Terrific. Great musicians with high energy (even for an older crowd) for the early Tuesday show. Our two fiftysomethings and two twentysomethings helped bring the average age down. Service and food also at a high level. We ordered wine off the menu, but they also offer a corkage fee if you bring your own. This will be a repeat next time we're in HHI
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
Amazing spot -- a real gem. For the last two years, my uncle has treated our whole family to dinner and a show at The Jazz Corner when we're visiting HHI for Thanksgiving. Both performances have been outstanding and very different from one another -- some of the most talented performers I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live and up close. The food is great, too, with lots of dishes to choose from, including a vegan option. Most recently, I went for the special, lobster mac and cheese with bacon, while my husband got the BBQ ribs. They also offer a whole page of cocktails with clever names and upscale ingredients, as well as a number of wine options and a few draft beers. And service is good, too -- very friendly, aside from one snooty hostess on our most recent visit. Be aware that there is a PER PERSON MINIMUM of one entree or two appetizers. This is, of course, understandable given that you're getting an entire show with it, but just know that going into it and be sure you arrive hungry. The Jazz Corner is an incredible overall experience, perfect for a special event or just for a fun night out. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Yelp
This place is really special. The island is very lucky to have this nationwide-renowned Jazz club. I don't know who I thought I was but I tried to show up without a reservation on a Sunday. They politely turned me away, but they said I'd be able to eat outside. This was great, as I was mostly there for the food, but now I really want to try to get a reservation because the inside seems amazing! I started out with the appetizer portion of the lobster mac and cheese. It was really tasty, I was wanting more (tbh I probably could've finished the entree portion along with the actual entree!). They had lamb on special that day and I decided to try it, since nothing else on the menu was absolutely calling my name. This was a great choice, it was really nicely done. The carrots it came with were really delicious, and I'm not a huge carrot person to begin with. You can hear the music very clearly from the outside patio, and they have a monitor that shows the live stream of the band playing. This was a great setup for me, as I got to enjoy the lovely evening outside and listen to great music. The staff was super helpful and friendly too. Overall an excellent experience and I hope to be back watching, listening, and eating from the inside next time!

Yelp
Food: well worth the $. It is a bit pricey. (Required two apps or an entree for a reservation) entrees about 20-35 a person. Very tasty though. We both had the specials and an appetizer (Brie) it was amazing. Service was excellent. We never went without but also never get bothered. Well done to the team. Ambiance was AWESOME. The Jazz band was amazing. We had some guest performers and even got to see the owner fill in on upright bass. Loved the decor, the bar, and the acoustics were top notch. If you have the dollars-- get a reservation.

Yelp
10 stars if that were possible. Amazing! Entertainment includes the chefs amazing culinary chorus besides the musical talent on stage. The Jazz Corner should be a destination on everyone's roadmap. Young and old were moving to the contagious beat that hits your soul. Thank you for a wonderful night to remember forever.
