13 Can’t-Miss Iconic North Carolina Diners

"It’s a good rule of thumb that when there’s not much else around, a local diner will be the heart of a small town’s culinary scene. The Local Joint, located on the outskirts of Asheville in Fairview, is packed daily with regulars who come hungry for breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes. Don’t be fooled by the connecting gas station: the Local Joint’s ambiance is tastefully modern, with all the comfort of a proper Southern diner. The menu is reflective of that, ranging from fluffy biscuits smothered in homemade gravy to vegetarian and gluten-free dishes." - Sara Akhavan, Kay West, Matt Lardie, Kathleen Purvis, Nikki Miller-Ka

Cool place. Everyone here is a very nice. A little on the tight side inside the bar, but it has a very cozy atmosphere. They have live music multiple nights a week here, and you can order food to go or to be served as is at the bar from via the restaurant next door. Variety on tap is pretty good as well.

As much as I want to keep this gem all to myself, it just isn't right not to sing its praises. Fives stars across the board! The atmosphere, food, and service are superb. And, if you're a music lover, they're always having bands play. Do yourself a favor and go have a pint or two. Cheers!!

First time visiting here. It was a really great atmosphere and the food was really good!! As you know, I'm gluten-free, had the spinach chicken salad, and I didn't get sick!! They have a band most Tuesday nights, and they were really good!! Good friends and great music!! Go! Enjoy!!

Yelp
I haven't eaten there, but I have at The Joint, and it's pretty good. The ambiance is awesome when amazing artists like The Mascari Brothers and St John are playing and service is good. Fun night out!

Yelp
Fun little bar hidden beside a gas station! Good, craft beer on tap and live music most nights. Fun and friendly place to to gather with friends!

Yelp
This is a bar that has great music, friendly patrons and hard working bartenders. They serve food from the restaurant next door. If you want to enjoy the music come here. If you want fast service go next door. This is absolutely one of the more enjoyable places in the Asheville area to listen to music, hang out, dance and eat. By the way, the food is ok too!

Yelp
I ordered a session sour from the bartender because there's only one on display. He served me a completely different brand of session sour, and when I told him it was the wrong beer he insisted I had to take it anyway because it was already open. It would be very informative for your bartenders to know the selection of beers that are available and for them to make sure they're displaying the correct beer for the patrons to order and not for saying a woman to buy something she didn't order. A male friend confronted the bartender because I wasn't drinking my drink and he told him that it was my fault that I ordered a drink not even available on the menu. Very weird situation. I hope the owners and management can figure out how to correspond between the display / menu and the bartenders doing their jobs.

Yelp
The food is very good quality and I like coming here for brunch, so I'll give 4 stars. Lately, there was been no wait. My complaint is that if I want to substitute something healthy, like a small salad, for calorific fried potatoes or grits with butter and cream, I'm charged an additional $1.25 on a $9.50 fancy egg sandwich. Not only does the restaurant probably save time by giving me salad, but money. I can't imagine a few spinach leaves and a cherry tomato cost most than grits or fried potatoes, especially if you include labor. Why should I be charged extra if I eliminated one item for another because I want to be healthy? AND on more than one occasion, the wait staff did NOT warn me about the upcharge! Luckily, my partner remembered this past time because I almost made the same mistake. The waitress was NOT empathetic to my request. Maybe there would be longer lines of the staff was more accommodating.

Yelp
They don't open till 3pm. I can't find a way to post the hours. That would have saved me a drive I didn't have to make.

Yelp
My husband and I went here to watch Quickchester play. We eventually figured out that The Local Joint and The Joint Next Door are separate businesses, the former being a restaurant and the latter, a bar, on opposite ends of a gas station. The hostess very cordially showed us across the gas station to our intended destination. What a surprise! This was a comfortable, friendly, local gathering place with a decent tap list, and a menu available from the restaurant side, with food being delivered to the bar. We had a pleasant evening enjoying good music, snacks, and new friends. It was worth the drive to Fairview.

Yelp
We had a 50th birthday party for two people there. Perfect in every way! A great band, amazing appetizers, a very convenient system to run a tab, great selection of beer, wine and cider. Really great people and an awesome local bar. Highest recommendation.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite hangouts in the Asheville area (it's in Fairview, about 10 minutes east of downtown...in a gas station). There's a nice selection of local beer on tap and some pretty awesome food at good prices. The crowd is a mix....but is always an interesting mix...and with a lot of good people. It's a friendly kind of place, where you won't sit alone sadly looking at your phone all night unless that's what you want to do. I recommend trivia nights (Thursdays), open-mic (bring your instrument and come out and play!), and any night with live music (I've seen some amazing acts at this little place). In the fine weather, there's a lovely patio out back and it's one of the nicest around.

Yelp
I'm a somewhat regular patron here and only after having multiple bad experiences do I feel that this establishment warrants a one-star review. Tonight we waited over an hour and a half for our food which was never actually ordered. We then received a poor explanation as to why our food never arrived. By the time WE(not the staff) figured out that they had forgotten about us, it was at least another half hour wait just to get our food to go. When paying the bill we were given one meal which was not sufficient for the amount of time we had to wait. To add insult to injury, when we were leaving the bartender who originally took our order was out front smoking a cigarette. She apologized for the food taking so long and suggested that we get angry with the cooks next time prior to ordering our food?!? Perhaps she's tasting too much of their goods? In any case, a solid apology and a free meal would have sufficed vs. blaming the cooks. Will never make this mistake again. As a bar, it's okay. Service sucks, but it's the only bar in town.
