This is a 5 floor library with basement. Pretty good book selection. The 5th floor has a terrace and an old school reading room that looks like an executives office. Parking is free for one hour in the adjacent garage with validation. They have a small art gallery and a coffee and pastry shop.

My daughter and I were in town for something else and had a few hours to spare so we walked over to the library. It's very nice and welcoming and felt very safe. There is a display up some stairs called "The Road Home" that highlights/honors the stories of some homeless people which is beautiful. Downstairs there are movies and a little theater.

Beautiful library filled with stunning art and sculptures throughout. It’s a fantastic place to study, and the staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. I even received a library card as a visitor, which was perfect because it allowed me to work comfortably on the 5th floor. The only downside I noticed was the presence of many homeless individuals, though I understand they are just in need of a warm place, and I respect that. Overall, I highly recommend this library for anyone looking for a serene study environment!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can’t say enough about the amazing staff at the Kansas City Public Library, especially James and Sawyer. I recently found myself in a very desperate situation after my vehicle tag was stolen. To prevent further issues, I was creating a temporary tag with my police case number and department information to stop people from reporting my vehicle for not displaying a tag. When I visited the library, I explained my predicament to Sawyer on the third floor. She immediately understood the urgency of my situation and provided me with book repair tape—exactly what I needed to laminate my homemade license plate. Sawyer was professional, resourceful, and compassionate, even as she juggled assisting other patrons. I’ve also had the pleasure of interacting with James, whose professionalism and respectfulness consistently stand out. It’s clear that both James and Sawyer are skilled at managing diverse personalities with grace and emotional intelligence, which is something I truly appreciate as someone with a background in psychology and sociology. The library staff truly went above and beyond to help me in a stressful time, and I’m incredibly grateful for their support. I highly recommend this library for their exceptional service and caring staff!

Unfriendly security, unfriendly staff who asked our well behaved scout group to move, stop, etc many times. Very unwelcoming and goes against everything a library should be. What a terrible way to treat polite, friendly scouts. In town with a scout troop and needed to spend some time before our evening train. Scouts thought library would have games, puzzles, opportunities for free screen free entertainment. We came in with 6 teenage scouts and 4 adults, wearing troop shirts. We proceeded to go up to the rooftop to play chess. While the scouts were playing chess, the adults were stretching on the rooftop. At first a guard came up and asked us to move off the glass skylights bc she was afraid they would not be safe. What in the world? If people can walk on them/use an open rooftop, there should not be a concern about standing/sitting on them. We politely accommodated her request and moved to the shade. A few moments later, another guard came up and told us we could not stretch on the ground, and had to sit in chairs/benches, but could not sit in the floor. No matter that the library holds a yoga class every Saturday to promote wellness…. Later, we were in the basement near the vault. Two of our scouts were making a Zine craft while the rest of us were waiting for them to finish. The librarian came up to us, told us that we could only sit at those tables if we were making a craft and that we needed to leave. There were no other patrons anywhere close to the craft area. This behavior by guards and staff goes against everything a library stands for. Don’t you want young people to use the resources and space??? Before coming in today, I thought to myself what a great place to visit, I should come back with my family. I would never go here again.

Librarians are the smartest people in town and they're nice people and helpful if you're new in town the post office knows the entire city and the local gym is where you'll meet healthy friendly people sober

Google
Coolest library I have ever been in. If you decide to play yourself in chess on the roof remember to reset the board. Time well spent love love loved it from the parking garage bookshelf to the vault in the basement.

This library is Massive with lots of places to sit and read. We stopped in for the midday meditation and it was honestly incredible. Everyone was extremely friendly and the experience was incredible. The view from the balcony was very nice. There were lots of historic and art culture things spread throughout. This place is almost halfway a museum

Yelp
The Library was so amazing! My son and I went during a downtown fan day. We spend about 3 hours in the library just enjoying it. I would recommend anyone in KC to stop by when downtown. It's just off the streetcar line. It's absolutely beautiful inside and the staff is so top notch. Everyone we came in contact with was the best. Thank you for an amazing experience.

Yelp
The library was a bank previously, so architecture and history are the main attractions. The book collection is quite old, the unique quiet environment made me want to sit and read. There is a heavy vault at lower level as a proof this used to be a bank:) Mr Nelson did many good things with his wealth, this is one of them, as well as well known Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Parking nearby can be challenging.

Yelp
I am truly shocked I have not reviewed the Central library in all the time I have lived in KC. The Central Library is truly one of my favorite places in the city. EASY PARKING/ACCESS: Super accessible by streetcar - the Library has its own stop! You can get one hour of free parking validated inside the library for the parking garage to the west of the library (yes the parking garage that looks like a bookshelf). There are validators at the main desk and near the check out station by the front door. FREE MOVIES: head down to the basement to watch a movie in the old bank vault! They do tons of free movies all week long. In the summers, they also do movies on the rooftop deck! The basement is also where you can check out movies and CDs. They always have curated racks to choose from, but you can ask for any movie to be retrieved for you at the check out window. The staff is so kind and helpful. ROOFTOP: head to the top floor for one of the best rooftops in the city! Great views. There's a big chess board and a couple of tables. Great relaxing space. EVENTS: if you're not going to events at the library, you are missing out! There are always tons of arts & crafts, speakers, trivia games, and more happening, and all for FREE! They have historical tours on the weekends, and there are frequently scavenger hunts to learn about the history of the building! EASY TO USE: it's super easy to sign up for a library card at the front desk if you have some mail or a way to demonstrate a Kansas City address. The check out stations are really easy to use - you scan your card, put your stack of books on the counter under the scanner, and that's it! No need to scan individual books. Obviously the library has tons of materials available already, but you can also request them to purchase new materials (5 every month). I will admit, the app is trash and doesn't work very well, but I'll forgive them. PRINTING: you can print 50 pages for free in black and white! The cost is really low for color printing. They have public computers that you can access. And NO LATE FEES! I can't say enough about how much I love the Central Library! You could spend an entire day in there, easy! Don't miss out on all the awesome free stuff the library has to offer!

Yelp
The Kansas City Library downtown is a hidden gem that truly captivates visitors with its remarkable architecture and vast literary collection. With its cool books-as-stairs concept, exploring the library becomes an enchanting adventure in itself, immersing readers in a world of knowledge and imagination. The cool vault in the basement adds an intriguing touch, creating an atmosphere of mystery and wonder. It's also a movie theatre FYI! The architectural beauty of the library is awe-inspiring, blending modern elements with classic elegance. Every corner exudes sophistication and thoughtfulness, making it a perfect spot for both book lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. One of the highlights of the library is the terrace, which provides a serene and inviting space to unwind with a book or enjoy the city's skyline. It's a great place to find peace and tranquility amidst the bustling city. The Library downtown is a must-visit destination that seamlessly combines captivating architecture, a vast array of books, and a beautiful terrace, creating an experience that leaves visitors in awe. 5/5 stars! FYI: I was not going to visit however, family and friends kept raving! Thankfully I did get the chance to visit.

Yelp
This would be a fun outing with your family on a Saturday weekend. Lots to explore. Located downtown. Parking garage nearby. Downstairs movie vault for free movie viewing. Upstairs there is a rooftop patio area for lunch or a game of chess overlooking view of city. Nice children's area inside.

Yelp
Kansas City has world-class museums, sports and music venues, food and coffee scene, public art and fountains, skyline and may I add... a Central Library. If you have never visited the main library on 10th St, you are missing a truly unique building with so much to offer. I do not use this library for checking out media, because I have a closer one to my home, but I still love coming here for all the peripheral things they provide to everyone; KC resident or not. Being an art and history lover, the rotating exhibits here compel me to take regular trips downtown. I've seen exhibitions on Ralph Steadman, Dwight Eisenhower, Aviation history in Kansas City, and multitudes of art from local artists. Today's large display on the mezzanine was a collection of mixed media created by Kansas Citians with developmental disabilities. A great exhibit and very cool that the library can provide an outlet for the under-represented. The Missouri Valley Room has the greatest collection of books, maps, photos and general history of the area. A morning or afternoon well spent for amateur historians or professional researchers. I've also attended events featuring local authors, sipped coffee in the cafe, sat and enjoyed the sun and skyline on the roof patio, and smiled every time I've walked past the large "book shelf" that the parking garage uses as a literary facade. There is also a movie theater inside the original bank vault in the basement with free movies every weekend and a large Thomas Hart Benton mural. Parking is free with validation and the free streetcar stop is just 2 blocks away, so there is really no excuse to not spend a very cheap or free couple of hours checking out one of KC's most under appreciated jewels. An easy 5 stars.

Yelp
I have never been one to get excited about going to a library, however the Kansas City Public Library is a place I'd recommend visiting. There is something to appeal to all ages. In addition to the nice selection of books, the building is rich in history and nicely documents the building's origins as First National Bank. There are multiple exhibits that range from informative and historical to artistic beauty and intrigue. My favorite exhibit was the Fourth Grade Project which interviews children in the US and all over the world share and documents their stories and answers to the questions: Who do you live with? What are you afraid of? What do you wish for? There are 5 floors with plenty of private seating and a children's library. The rooftop deck provides a nice view, with a few outdoor seating options and greenery. If you prefer to engage in a friendly game of chess, there are life size pieces and an extra large board. For art enthusiasts you will find multiple art pieces through the building that highlight both local and famous artists. Even the parking garage structure and stairwell have been built to resemble books. Would definitely recommend as you could easily spend a few hours here, admission is free and they validate parking as long as you park in the library's parking garage.

Yelp
It's a gorgeous library. Parking was super convenient. The staff was so helpful and professional. I just have so much respect for librarians. On our visit, everyone was masked up...and properly, I might add. Not so much with KC in general, but here, yes indeed. We had to do historical research on the top floor where archives were kept. So much rich information. The librarian there was spectacular. When he left on his break, he made sure to tell his coworker what we were trying to do in case we needed more help.

Yelp
Get rid of the homeless people that just stand there and block the library door way.

Yelp
This Library doesn't disappoint! Almost museum like in some aspects, marble floors, beautiful chandeliers with tall ceilings. The staff here were very helpful. I didn't realize you have to get a separate library card from the Mid continental libraries I usually frequent. I got signed up and away I went. The kids section is on the second floor and it was a lot of fun. Tons of activities and interactive areas. There was even a chess board. The bathrooms do require you to get a key, which I didn't know.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite building in the city and one of the main reasons that I live downtown. I'm here probably once a week, whether it's to pick up books or a movie, print out documents, or watch a movie in the vault! The library hosts so many fun events like movies on the terrace or events put on by the Young Friends of the Library. The rooftop terrace is so nice to hang out and read a book and watch the sunset. I do the summer reading challenge every year to collect the free library pint glass prize! The building itself is gorgeous and the parking garage is so fun with the giant book spines on the outside. I truly cannot say enough good things about the downtown library!

Yelp
Really lovely and peaceful library! 5-6 floors Really friendly child area Used to be a bank We spent like 30 min inside as a touristy activity

Yelp
I wish I lived downtown KC so I could access this library regularly. I love the book spines out front which camouflage the parking garage and the basement vault. Seriously, this used to be a bank and there is a mini movie theater in a vault downstairs. This is a cool place to check out if you are taking a walk downtown. Especially if you are tourist looking for free quick fix. They also have events here too, so keep an eye on the schedule. We are fortunate to have a library like this in the KCMO area. Oh yeah, one more thing... they have books!
google avatar

Lieu N.

Yelp
I spent 10 minutes going up and down the elevators in the garage, until I figured out the library was the building next to the book garage. On the weekdays, you can find parking spots on the street. When I finally found the building (right next to the garage), I was in TOTAL AWE. There are four stories (I think?). On the first, there are abundant computer space. On the second floor, there is a museum with historic information. Third has ample study space and natural lighting. I can study and read in there for ages!! I think there are study rooms on the fourth floor that you can access with a library card. This place is so beautiful. I will be frequenting here more often.

Yelp
Book nerds, unite! This is a top notch library in downtown KC, one with the feel of a library that's been around a century despite it's newer construction. They put on tons of community events, have a killer rooftop, and an overall great vibe for studying/reading/working. The book-cover parking garage is architectural genius, combining beloved classic books and design. I love things like this, and it's the reason this library makes national photo features on Twitter and Instagram. Truly a gem nestled into our fair city, and one I can't wait to go back to.
google avatar

Yelp
This library is nice. The exterior with the books is so cute and the way they have re-done the bank to include "real treasures" is amazing. There is a parking garage. There are always cool book events happening and they serve wine and cheese to accompany those events. They have lots of childrens events as well. Please visit your local libraries! Reading not only increases the intelligence of the brain but it is also the cheapest way to travel.

Yelp
As a book nerd .... I loved walking through here!!! So pretty!! They really make a effort to make the library system great. I could probably spend half a day just here!

Yelp
So very impressed with our Library. Had a historical research project I wanted to work on for Christmas gifts this past year. Ended up being in touch with Michael Wells. Michael was absolutely fantastic to work with and very patient with my numerous questions. He guided me through the research and was super-helpful in every way. I couldn't be happier or more grateful for his assistance. So nice to know our local library has such quality and caring employees! Thanks, Michael!

Yelp
Took our kids here with age ranges from 16-3, fully expecting them all (except the one that wanted to go) to be bored, thought we'd spend maybe 20 minutes inside but ended up being there for an hour and everyone enjoyed it. The little ones liked playing their Pokemon game and getting a prize. The full size chess game on the roof and the vault in the basement were my favorite parts. Plus the enormous "bookshelf" on the parking garage.

Yelp
What a beautiful building, I was in awe walking and admiring. I think I was more in love with the building, the gorgeous scenic garage than the items it holds. Parking is available and first hour is free with validation. The garage is beautiful and iconic. It's adorned with bigger than life classic books. The halls seem intimidating because it has a scene of grandness that belonged it's predecessor. There is a cafe on site with seating available, I didn't stop by but wished I would have. I'm always looking for a great cup of coffee, I am also curious about their hours, quality of coffee, and the ability to have liquids inside a library! I will be sure to check it out next time I visit. I was impressed at how convenient and technologically advanced the library had become, it now offers the ability to self checkout. Although, there is staff on site and gladly willing to assist. I signed up for a library card, checked out a couple of books and was on my way. I look forward to visiting, exploring, and taking advantage of the events the library offers.

Yelp
I love the central library in downtown Kansas City! Although I live in the Northland, this is my preferred library. I love the architecture of this library. It was converted from a bank and has a grand feel to it that you don't get in many libraries. It is also cool how they repurposed the features of the bank into the new library. For example, the vault has become a movie vault with a cool viewing area inside. The history of the bank is woven into the story of the library in a unique way. I also love the programming that this branch puts on. One of my favorites so far was a performance of the Bach Aria Soloists in conjunction with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. It was a wonderful evening of classical music and Shakespeare in a grand space that reminded me of days gone by. Parking is easy at this location! There is a garage next door... you'll recognize it by the classical book spines decorating the outside. As a visitor to the library, you can get up to 1 hour of parking validated. Just don't forget your ticket when you go. The validation machines are located next to the check-out desks. If you haven't been to the central library, you need to check it out! I guarantee it will have you coming back!

Yelp
Came here to study for my life/health/disability insurance exam that I took this morning and the library overall was fantastic. I started off rocky because I went up to the front desk and said "Where do I get a study room?" The girl kindly replied that the rooms are checked out by the 3rd floor desk so I would have to go up there. After walking up the stairs to the 3rd floor, I approached the desk (very non-threatening with my large bag that included a diet coke and my computer) and asked the woman if there were any study rooms available because I needed to "check one out" per-say. The library nazi then asked me for my library card... which I do not have because this was my first time to a KCMO library. I told her I did not have one and she said that I had to get one. I then had to question her where I could get one of these golden tickets because apparently she wasn't going to offer up the information. Her reply was that I needed to go back downstairs because she didn't have them. There I went... lugging my big bag downstairs to then ask the nice lady for a library card. The process was quick and while I was down there, I made mention that the woman upstairs was not the nicest. She replied, "Yeah, that's not the first time I've heard that!" Hmm... intriguing. Alright, back upstairs with my big bag... I must mention that I decided to take the elevator... it's very nice besides one ride I had smelled of vodka. I believe either the library nazi leads people to drink or a homeless drunk person wandered in. Forked over the library card for a key fab to a study room and then asked if I could use it at any of the rooms and where they were. Library nazi then told me "No. Go to the room number on the card! The rooms are on the 4th floor." "Wellllllllll thannnnnnnnk YOU." was my reply. Used my room for 3 hours... got what I needed to get done and then got interrupted at 8:50 by a security man telling me they closed in 15 mins and that I needed to return my key as soon as I get my stuff cleaned up. Cool beans, I just finished my last chapter. Clean up my stuff, turn off the light, make sure the door closed behind me and then made my way downstairs for the final time to give library nazi her room key. Her reply to me... "We would APPRECIATE if you would bring the key back 15 minutes before...." (I cut her off). "Well ma'am NO ONE informed me of this unwritten rule and this is my first time here. So I recommend that you TELL someone if you want them to FOLLOW your rule." About face, leave library. This is my long story about the library nazi that I encountered... she was the only negative about the beautiful library. Lots of books (probably not leather bound), a coffee bar that is open 9-3 (during the week), a parking garage (first hour is free) and lots of study rooms. Just stay away from the library nazi. :) Oh - and if you're wondering... I passed my exam this morning ;)

Yelp
This will be a bit of a different review because I really haven't used the Kansas City Public Library for its intended use. I have never checked out a book, done any studying or research, used any of the computers, printers or other multimedia equipment available for public use. What I will write about are some of the extracurricular events that the library offers to the open public. On the top floor, there is a meeting room available for certain events and functions, most notably book signings and panels. While the calendar offers a wide ranging amount of events, many are tailored with a local feel. Panels I've attended have included a book signing and discussion about baseballs unwritten rules as well as some local interpretations and stories that enhanced the topic and a panel featuring some of Kansas City's brightest young business minds and their opinions about building a business and staying current in today's constantly changing marketplace. I think you get the idea. If you look at the calendar, which I hope you do, there really is something for everybody. Throughout the year, weather permitting, the library will also project movies outside on the patio area of its roof. I've never been to one, but they do look like a good time and the library often will partner with a local restaurant and adult beverage company for some food and drink to enhance the evening. I'm glad that Kansas City has a public library that is able to offer events like the ones I have described. I'm making it a goal to try and involve myself in more of them. I hope you do too.

Yelp
Love this library! They have the best story time. I like how they actually read several books and sing some songs and sometimes have a craft for the kids to do! The children's staff is very nice and helpful. If you attend story time they will validate your parking ticket and it's good for the whole day! The security guards are always very nice. On our first visit one of the guards actually walked us up to the children's section! I also love how they have a coffee shop in the library.

Yelp
If you're a resident in Kansas City and don't have a library card, get one! Take advantage of the free movie and book rentals, and free events that often go on. This location, the Central Library, is my favorite for the historic feel. The entrance is grand with tall ceilings and huge columns, the building is well kept, and fun to explore. There is also a cafe for coffee and snacks on your right when you first walk in; I don't know of many libraries that have that feature.

Yelp
We just moved into town and the KC public library was on my list of sites to check out (mostly for the cool community bookshelf). It's located on 10th street between Baltimore and wayandotte street. It is striking!!!! The gigantic books are breath taking (nerdy, yes, but totally awesome!). We took plenty of pics around them, but the library itself was just as gorgeous! Pillars, chandeliers, glass and the best part was the Children's section of the library was the best I've ever seen! So colorful and inviting. If you have a kid that maybe isn't too fond of books (like mine) this is the perfect place to slowly get them interested because they not only have books but so many activities! There is a cool little puppet show set up where you can put on your own puppet show, a section where iPads read a book to you, coloring, board games etc! Definitely a must see if you are in Kansas City!!!

Yelp
I attended a live reading here with a friend for the Dickens series, featuring local actors. There were veggies and dip, hummus and pita chips, coffee and small glasses of wine available pre-reading. The entertainment was top notch and very enjoyable. What makes it even more impressive was that this was a free event. I have not explored the main library as much as I should have thus far, but I plan to. Very nice library with an intriguing schedule of free movies, talks and other events. The rooftop garden on the 5th floor was very inviting as well.

Yelp
I was really excited about a special event they were having. I was disappointed about paying for parking in the evening, plus the fact that you still have to walk across the street to get to the building (unless I'm missing a secret tunnel). The staff pretty much ignored me, which I wandered around a little trying to find the directory, I would think they could maybe look up and act friendly...even if they don't say anything. I enjoyed a photo exhibit while I waited. The special event was a joke. It was so disappointing, but since it doesn't really reflect the every day stuff, I won't go into it. I enjoyed the reading area, although it was a bit of a mess (periodicals); however, it was evening, so I'm sure it'd seen a lot of foot traffic during the day.

Yelp
I love this library, starting from the parking garage and working my way in. The parking garage of this library has walls that are made to look like a giant bookshelf! They don't have any photos showing this on their website, but if you google 'KC library parking garage' I'm sure it will come up. It really is breathtaking to see, especially if you love books as much as I do. The library inside is huge, and it seems pretty daunting at first, but there are always staff around to help you find what you need to. They have just about every book that you can think of, and they make it really easy to find what you need using their online catalog, which you can also use at home. On their website you can also reserve books and see if a certain book is in stock before going there to check it out. This is the main branch of the KC library and it sure does a great job of hosting civic events, speakers, and community activities that everyone can enjoy, from technology classes to walking groups. Check out the website for more info.

Yelp
This is a real gem of a library even if it is located downtown. There is a parking garage next door-it's the one with the exterior walls decorated like books. Do note that this library is across the street not sharing the garage like the plaza branch. First hour is validated in the library but parking in the garage is free on weekends. If you so chose it's not impossible to find street parking. If you do park in the garage, note that the top level has some interesting overhead views. This is an extensive and large library with four floors and a basement. There are 50 or so public access computers, free wi fi, and just tons of books and other media. The movies and music things are downstairs in the vault. This is literally a vault. In it's prior incarnation this building was a massive turn of the century central bank so in addition to the movie theater vault the whole place has marble, chandeliers, brass railings and polished wood fixtures. Lot's of benches and nooks scattered around, and there are study rooms available should you need them. The roof and the lobby can be reserved for private events (weddings are popular. Walking down that staircase into the lobby makes for one grand entrance). This is a simply magnificent building. The lobby is dominated by the central staircase that runs up to all floors. the railing is glass which means it is transparent. It gives the illusion of there not being any railing. Children who have no feeling of mortality enjoy pressing thier faces up against the glass and looking all the way down (potentially a four floor drop) and banging on the glass. I'll be the guy in treading carefully in the exact center of the stairs as far as possible from the transparent rail. The size of the building allows for a magnificent collection of materials be it books, magazines, genealogy, computers, music, movies or anything else that be read or viewed. On the downside the men running the media section are less then helpful. Public browsing of the music/movie selection is not allowed (theft issues. This is downtown after all) and you have to scan the inventory via a computer, identify what you want by title, and then go ask if they have it. For whatever reason the guy running the counter won't be able to get what you are looking for slightly less then half the time. The wifi is consistently down on Sundays for some reason, so don't count on the interwebs on that day. Other then some small flaws, this is a spectacular public resource well worth the time spent to drop by.

Yelp
This library is beautiful architecture and spacious. Several floors of what seems like billions of books. A little bistro and much more that have not even tapped, plus free parking with validation. On a cold winter day, a great escape and in summer, rooftop views of the city. A bookworm could lose track of time here.

Yelp
I really have to say that I enjoyed this place. We were wandering around KC last week as tourists and happened upon this building. It's a building historic building that used to be a bank. Lots of columns, lots of history and it's just a big beautiful building even with tasteful posters up showing its history. It's just a beautiful library.

Yelp
My first trip to Kansas City, and the first stop I make after checking into the hotel? The public library. Actually, the library was only on my list of "things to see if I happen to be walking by." And, I was on my way to a CVS-run when I walked by a beautiful, visually arresting building and thought "By God, if that business is open, I'm going in!" Only then did I realize I was at the library. Terrifically redesigned space. The parking garage and some of the interior spaces (the vault; the children's library) have such respectable whimsy. As an out of towner, I was also impressed by how the library was actually being used for library purposes. I didn't see anyone on the computers doing Facebook or gaming (which happens in my hometown). Plus, the art exhibit space (not sure if it is a permanent collection, or if it rotates) was really well curated and interesting. AND THEY HAVE MICROFICHE!

Yelp
The Library has always provided great speakers and programs, but as someone who has quietly enjoyed them for years, it's clear that the Library has just stepped up its game enormously. If you don't know about the events going on at the Library every single week, go now to their web page, sign up for the e-newsletter, and check out the events page. You'll love it. http://www.kclibrary.org/events/list?type=187

Yelp
I am a little embarrassed that I have never been to this branch until recently. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in KC. From the parking garage that is hidden behind what looks like giant books, to the gorgeous historic architecture. The library deserves 5 stars just on it's beauty alone, but there is a lot more to talk up. Of course there is a great selection of materials and spacious areas to read, study, research, etc. The archives are full of Kansas City historic information. And Kansas City has an amazing city history that is worth researching! The library has various lecture series on a wide range of subjects that will find something to appeal to everyone. And the outdoor deck at the top of the building? Amazing view, huge chess set, and just a great place to spend some time at. The parking garage offers free parking with validation for one hour. Personally, I would recommend jumping on a bus, taking a lunch, and spending a few hours at a time enjoying the library! It is a great anytime field trip!

Yelp
I LOVE the Downtown Library since it has such unique architecture, an excellent selection of books, media (Media room is in the basement) and even a nice little cafe on the first floor. There is a business center with a good variety of business materials from historical to new media and a nice area for children. Make sure to check out the basement for the Vault, movies, music and more!

Yelp
I love libraries, especially big old ones. This one used to be a bank (witness the fact that they have turned the vault into a movie theater to show films!) The architecture in this place is amazing, and they had some cool displays. If you go wandering you will find cool stuff: local history, AV (up near the bank vault/theater). One thing we couldn't find? The reference desk! I mean, really? In looking at the map of the first floor it said "information desk" but there wasn't a loction listed for it (as opposed to the circulation desk, which is the people who check you out). We figured we would ask the Circulation lady, because all we wanted to know was the location of a nearby building, and figured she could either a) tell us or b) just point us to Reference. Bad move. Circulation Lady proceeded to give us the most convoluted directions possible (looking at Google Street View, and using south, west etc. -- I finally said, "we don't live here, can you just tell us left or right?") When we got outside, looking at the 4 step directions, I figured out that we could cut out three turns and just in fact turn once and we were there. So I still have no clue a) how she came by those directions and b) where the Reference desk is. :/ The only other drag is parking (in their cool garage that looks like spines of books). You can park on the street (if you can find it) for a couple of hours, or you are validated for an hour in their garage and presumably have to pay after that. So kind of deters people from staying there long-term to study etc. Overall, though, this place is definitely worth checking out. Happy reading!

Yelp
Beautiful, historic, and well kept. The staff, the artwork, the amenities are all on point. Wander around and you'll see all sorts of cool books and treasures. We had to hang out here a while on our trip because work doesn't stop on your vacation sometimes, but I'm kinda glad I got a peek at the library.

Yelp
What a beautiful Library! It is so unique with the Books parking structure (which I originally though wasss the library), and their rooftop area. I was surprised we could go to the top floor to see it!

Yelp
Dear KC Public Library, I love you. Here's why. On the outside you are beautiful, dare I say, glorious. I love the mural of giant books on the outside. Those books are indeed, some of the greatest books of all times--both classic and modern. I stood next to Willa Cather's "O Pioneers!" and felt like I was standing at the footsteps of literary art! But not only are you beautiful on the outside, you are beautiful on the inside. The pillars, the high ceilings, and the intoxicating smell of thousands of bound books! Heaven on earth. So many books to choose from! I could spend all day here! The old vault down in the basement where they show free movies is just an added bonus. It gives you this serious old-timey feel which is awesome. It's so much fun. ALSO: I absolutely love the exhibits. I love how they are just small enough where you can read all the information and spend just enough time looking at the art or pictures and appreciate them without your attention drifting. The current Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad art exhibit is beautiful and touching. However, the Bunce Island: A British Slave Castle in Sierra Leone, is my absolute favorite. It's just a little historical exhibit about a less-known aspect of the slave trade that is altogether fascinating and yet poignant. After reading one panel of information, I'd have questions which the next panel would answer. It was like the exhibit was reading my mind! I left the exhibit feeling properly educated and really glad I learned something so interesting. So, Library, you are beautiful, interesting, fun and have tons of information...and that is why I love you. Yours, Farah

Yelp
I am a BIG fan of this library. Now granted, i'm not typically the kind of person to check out books from the library. I like to buy books. I'm really only grading this place as a public space. specifically the roof. The roof of the downtown public library is hands down my favorite spot in the city for hanging out and reading. In the summertime i like to sneak my lunch up there and sit at a table, casually eating and reading my book. i love being over the city, and unfortunately, Kansas City doesn't have a lot of rooftop options. You can hear the city below you, but still it seems like you're in a little private oasis. I can spend hours up here, and i've got the sunburns to prove it. my one suggestion? get some electrical outlets near the patio tables, so i can charge my laptop.

Yelp
For all of the sopt-on, already stated reasons this library is too much fun. The location, the architecture, the art exhibits being constructed, the myriad pertinent and up-to-date resources, the helpful staff, the comprehensive floor layouts, and every book I have needed to look up has been there so far with only one exception which I got transferred there via online request and ended up finding online on their website anyway. Which brings me to my next point: What really piqued my interest was it is the first library I have used that has an extensive online library for free, fast, downloadable audiobooks and e-books. I've gotten classics, new best sellers, and even some of my favorite Charles Spurgeon sermons (that dude is BA). This online access to library books may be old news already (I only just got back here from the military), but I am very pleased with this feature. Yelp
Life-size chess near the rooftop garden with a great city view? Check. Great kids section with friendly architecture and cute chairs? Check. Beautifully rennovated lobby space? Check. Two lovely gallery spaces? Check. Funky parking lot design that incorporates books? Check. Cafe? Check. Books? Check. Neat programming? Check. Anything missing? Not that I saw!

Yelp
TONS OF BOOKS and helpful friendly staff! I love this library with it's classic look! I live in south KC but love to drive up here for the experience! Also, for the most part there is a swift turn-around for hold request!

Yelp
gorgeous rooftop terrace. parking deck in the shape of oversized classics. free cards are issued to both kansas citians and kansans alike ( i live in lawrence and have a kcpl borrower card for FREE). great speakers and lectures on a regular basis. grand, majestic, historic location in the financial district. a "movie vault" with a rotation of films being shown. these are A FEW of the reasons Kansas Citians should be proud of their award-winning public library system and the new central branch.

Yelp
Gorgeous building with lots of neat history. We visited from out of town and did the guided tour (offered monthly, I found the info on their website). Very neat, the guide did a nice job giving the background and some behind the scenes info. Wish we lived closer to take advantage of the many, many cool events they offer.

Yelp
It is so important to support our local libraries - and this is the best library in town! They have a little snack counter with good lunches, a beautiful rooftop deck with life-sized chess pieces, helpful and friendly librarians, a great "new books" browsing section, a cool vault room downstairs for movies, and a wonderful children's library where my son and I like to hang out for hours, especially on a cold and rainy Sunday. I remember the original Main Public Library branch over at 12th and Grand - and this place is a HUGE improvement.

Yelp
Love everything about this place-- have used it much since arriving into town, and I must say the Missouri Valley Room on the fifth floor is one of my favorite spots in town, hands down. First of all, it is quiet, roomy, and they have amazing digital microfilm scanners that are free to use- I say this because I've been doing extensive research using microfilm, and to be able to use this service for free is saving my journalistic expense hide. When you need a break, just steps away there is a WONDERFUL rooftop patio replete with covered outdoor tables and giant chessboard that makes a perfect place to hang, make calls, eat a sammy, and take in the deep downtown scene. What else can I say- it's a writer's paradise!

Yelp
Ahhhh, where to begin? The downtown KCMO library is one of my favorite places in KC. Have you seen the parking garage, the one decorated to look like a bookshelf? It's been featured several times on different websites as a "must see". I don't live all that far from here. You can bike there, find parking easily enough, and it really feels like you are in the heart of downtown, as there is always a bustle. Libraries are cornerstones of a civilized city and I couldn't be more proud of our towering building of books. Located conveniently on the bus line, it is accessible to everyone. Some bores may see this as a negative, as this does mean there will be a lot of people hanging around, maybe even some "undesirables". I tend to see it as a positive: everyone is welcome here. Along with an impeccable selection of the best literature, they also boast a nice cafeteria on the main floor, almost constant small art gallery showings, author in-person talks, multiple floors open to students, laptop users, or just a place to read. There are multiple individual rooms you can use if you need quiet and concentration and a whole ton of computers to use. Moving on, in " the vault " on the ground/basement floor, they have Saturday showings of old, classic movies. Within reason, you can bring in snacks and you literally watch them IN AN OLD VAULT. Also downstairs is DVD and CD rental, which is 100% free; it wasn't always the case - they used to charge a buck for movie rentals but they finally wised up. The kid's section on the third floor is also excellent, equipped with friendly staff, toys, computers, etc. I have noticed the toys are a little, uh, dirty and germy BUT that's why they invented hand sanitizer? All told, this is the best place that exists.
