My family and I come here every year for crabs and to enjoy the views, but after this most recent visit, never again. To be clear, we had a pretty decent lunch INSIDE the restaurant. We’re a large group, 12 adults with kids in the mix. Service INSIDE was great, they weren’t too busy since we had a late lunch, around 2/3pm on a Saturday (8/23). Food was just okay; my chicken sandwich came with crab dip, which lacked flavor but still decent. XL crabs were delicious. We finished lunch then headed to the beach, as our yearly tradition goes. We find an empty table and watch as the kids play in the sand. The problems start here: the OUTSIDE waitress approaches. No friendly greetings, no acknowledgment, just went straight to the point: “are you guys going to order anything?” We at first said no, we had just eaten, to which she explained that the section we were sitting in was reserved for food orders. We decided we’ll take a few menus for appetizers. She sighed, rolled her eyes, and walked off. And yes, she rolled her eyes, her sunglasses were off. A few minutes pass and I see her talking to another worker, and the waitress doesn’t look pleased. Eventually, she returns to our table and goes: “my manager said you could only sit here if you order food. This section is for food. If you just want drinks, you need to move to the other section of the beach. I’m just relaying the message.” We were a bit confused because we had already told her we were going to order appetizers. Anyways, we told her that’s fine; we’ll order food. She walked off and we didn’t see her for a few minutes. My boyfriend ends up going to the bathroom inside the restaurant and as he exits, he sees and hears our waitress, venting to another waitress. He hears her go “I just got this big family and they have kids, they seem like they won’t order food and just want drinks, I’m just annoyed because I know they won’t tip well.” My boyfriend knew it was my waitress because he was standing close, and made eye contact with her. This whole interaction happened by the hostess table around 3:40. My boyfriend came back to the beach section and told me what happened, to which I started fuming. To make such accusations against our family, to treat us so rudely as soon as she approached us, and to make us feel like we weren’t good enough to sit at that section, honestly it was truly insulting. Now I was ready to confront her and demand to see the manager, but we had kids with us. We just had a lovely lunch inside and I didn’t want to cause a scene. I let it slide, and my family ended up moving to a different table on the “drinks only” section of the beach. However, it’s truly disappointing to see just how downhill this restaurant has gone. The beach used to be open, friendly, welcoming, and didn’t nickle and dime you for just standing on the sand. This restaurant is trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of their patrons and it’s sad to see. We had just spent $600 on lunch and just wanted to do some sightseeing on the beach. Obviously we know this beach is private, and we planned to order drinks on the beach, but it truly seems the waitress just wanted us out of her section. The fact that she tried to place the blame on her manager was frustrating too. We had agreed to order food, but for her to come back a second time and say “I’m just the messenger but if you’re gonna sit here you HAVE to order food.” Long story short, thank you to that waitress for ruining my visit. Next time, don’t assume people don’t tip based on their looks. Also, don’t talk bad about the customers you’re serving when they’re literally still in the area. The fact that you felt so comfortable to do this by the bathrooms and hostess stand, tells me this isn’t the first time you’ve done this and probably won’t be the last, which will only hurt the restaurant because our family (customers for many years) will never be returning.
