How Cookbook Author Julia Turshen Got Her Job | Eater

"Working the counter at a bakery in Port Chester, New York, between high school and college taught her vital front-of-house skills: how to interact with customers, answer questions, and take joy in people returning for more. She frequently reflects on those lessons when engaging with readers who cook from her books and listeners of her podcast." - Amy McKeever

Stopped by the kneaded bread today for the first time. Their service was quick and the clerk took her time to walk me through their food. Great overall experience and I will be going back.

Google
This is the best bakery ever! I was here over 12 years ago. I just drove 90 minutes to come back after moving away. The list of breads is endless and delicious.

If heaven had a café, it would be this place! Their tuna sandwich? Absolute perfection—so good it might just ruin all other tuna sandwiches for you. Whenever I’m back in town, you’ll find me here in the mornings, pretending to work while happily sipping on a delicious hot or iced coffee and munching on a muffin (or let’s be real—probably both). And before I leave? Yep, I grab a tuna sandwich. Almost. Every. Single. Time. The staff? Absolute legends. Friendly, fast, and just all-around awesome. If you haven’t been here yet, what are you even doing with your life?

We bought a triple berry pie to bring to a family gathering. It was amazing! Everyone loved it and went back for seconds. The fruit was fresh and the filling was just syrupy/juicy enough to be perfect. I even ate the crust, which I usually avoid in pies.

Google
Moved to this area recently and was ISO real sticky buns - not cinnamon rolls- for Christmas Brunch and The Kneaded Bread knocked it out of the park. Wow. Ordered the sticky buns, challah bread, apple pie and stollen bread and my family was beyond impressed. The sticky buns are bready, just enough cinnamon layered perfectly balanced gooey pecan topped yumminess deserving front cover of Bon Appétit. Everyone at the bakery is friendly, helpful and kind and welcome you like an old friend.

Google
I'm not joking folks: You have got to go And buy one of their pretzel croissants. Oh and don't taste it while you're there Or you'll end up buying several And possibly eating them all In the same day; that is how Delicious they are! I'm not saying they don't have other quality stuff, their breads are "to die for", but there's just something about the croissants and I hope by posting this I don't add to the competition of who's getting there first to buy them!! 😂

The Kneaded Bread is a treasure of a food provider in Port Chester, NY. All the bread is better by a million than any other bread you've ever had. Don't bother baking your own, it won't compare to the crusts, the insides or the length of time that the bread is viable. There is prepared food and you can have grab and go salads or build your own. Soup is home made and you can buy it to go frozen or hot. At any given time there are at least 3 varieties of frozen soup in my freezer. I have gotten out of the homemade soup business in my own kitchen, because Kneaded Bread soup is as good or better than my own. All the ingredients are fresh and the food is clean. But the big draw and the thing all my friends and family will request from me are the almond croissants. Sold out by 10:00 a.m. daily, they are easily the best morsel of food I have ever cheated on my diet for. Fernando, a mainstay and friendly face behind the counter, manages the retail operation with kindness and sincere friendliness you rarely experience because his goodness is authentic. Like I said, a treasure of a destination...

Google
I love this place! For at least 20 years Ive made the trip! 90 miles from home and worth every mile. The breads are incredible! Great coffee, pastries and sandwiches too. To top it off are the fantastic employees. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
Absolutely a must try! Even worth the trip from NYC. You can tell they have refined their recipes over the years. Everything is so good, the banana walnut muffin was so moist. Great service, staff is super friendly. Shoutout to Fernando!

Yelp
Great menu with quality items. I've tried their prepared salad and it tasted fresh. I chose the rosemary roll as my side and it was delicious. I've also had their drip coffee and chocolate chip cookie and crunchy walnut muffin. Service is fast-paced, the workers are nice. Decor is simple, no frills type of place with the food doing most of the talking.

Yelp
Fresh Donuts are amazing. We also loved the fresh mozzarella sandwich. The bread is second to none.

Yelp
The Kneaded Bread is such a staple in Port Chester, New York. They have out of this world, bread, pastries, soup sandwiches, etc. They also have underrated lattes. I love stopping here in the morning on my way to work to get a coffee and a croissant. Not to mention the price, I spend no more than $7 on a latte and pastry. Most places these days cost $7 for simply the latte. If you're looking for a great salad or soup, you should also come here. They have a lovely salad bar with many options to choose from and always have a different soup of the day. Definitely recommend stopping at the Kneaded Bread the next time you're in Port Chester!

Yelp
I heard so many stories about this place and I drive by often so I finally pulled over. Their selection of bread was amazing beautifully displayed. The selection of pastries was actually quite small. We had a delicious croissant and left so I can say we tried it.

Yelp
Hands down the best of the best. Their oat & poppy seed breads are amazing. Great service & and fairly priced as well. If you appreciate great breads, this is your spot. Oh btw I'm a chef/restaurantaur

Yelp
This is truly a wonderful bakery on every level from staff to all their delicious food I feel like I walked into Nana's kitchen each time with all the incredible smells! If ever in Port Chester area stop and enjoy.

Pat G.

Yelp
What impressed me so much was the staff's kindness and attentiveness in addition to of course the great and super fresh selections for lunch as well as baked goods and their breads!!! As I told them today: the could give a master class on class and kindness to all other merchants!! Bravo to them!!

Yelp
Last November, on an Amtrak ride from Newark to Boston, I saw Kneaded Bread from the window as we were passing through Port Chester and mentally filed it away to check out at some point. If you're doing a road trip between NYC and Boston, definitely swing by Kneaded for some bread and pastries. We got three things for my parents - the almond croissant, pretzel croissant, coconut macaron - but the super-friendly guy behind the counter (wish I got his name) threw in a few goodies for free, including two freshly made donuts, a chocolate chip cookie, and an oatmeal cookie. My husband and I gobbled the brown sugar cinnamon donut immediately. It was divine, incredibly crumbly. Also sampled the cookies. I loved how the chocolate chip managed to be both thin and chewy; ate half and immediately regretted not getting one for myself. As soon as you walk in, there's a refrigerated portion for pre-made salads/sandwiches and a counter for the bread and baked goods (lots of loaves on display, they also offer slicing). If you walk a little more to your left, they have a make-your-own salad bar. The soups also seemed popular. Would love to come back and try more of their offerings! Parking: Lots of street parking along Main Street. We didn't have any problems grabbing a spot on a weekend afternoon.

Yelp
Wow! Highly recommend this place! Kneaded Bread is really popular, and if you're anywhere near there, you have to go! You can park in Greenwich and walk over the little bridge to get there. Otherwise, there's parking on the New York side too. When you get close to the bakery, you'll notice a long line. They're really popular. From the outside you can see the bakers making rolls. They have salads and sandwiches, pastries, and bread. I had the most amazing hot chocolate here! I also had a chocolate brioche that was filled with pics of chocolate. It was so soft and good. I also had the sticky bun. You can sit outside and watch the train pass by over the bridge. Then walk on the street and check out the city. Don't miss this place!

Yelp
Recent weekends, I've been picking my in laws up and sampling the best bakeries that Westchester has to offer. This is the first one that's tempting me to end the search. This is about as good as it gets! The smell upon entry is good enough to have its own calorie count. There's a beautiful display of artisanal bread directly ahead. The staff is friendly and helpful. The selection is stunning! Savory breads aplenty and around the corner is a case of ridiculously tempting desserts. I grabbed a hot chocolate (thanks to the recommendation of a fellow Yelp reviewer) because it's made with real ingredients. They didn't open up a packet. I don't recall drinking better hot chocolate in my life. My father in law loved his coffee. We sat at a nice table and shared a pretzel roll and a chocolate croissant. Delicious and delicious. Off to a great start. We made it home with a loaf of provolone bread, a country loaf, a brownie, a ring ding, and since they were so nice a chocolate chip cookie and two donuts that they threw in for us. The provolone bread was a show stopper, we had it with lasagna after heating it up for five minutes in a toaster oven. Quality provolone melted in a tender loaf of bread with great crust, 10 out of 10. The country loaf was also solid, tasted the quality of the ingredients. Later on we put together a dessert plate. The donuts were awesome, the chocolate chip cookie is high end excellent, the brownie had depth of flavor and richness. The ring ding is worthy of it's own review. It's comically good. Perfect chocolate cake, cream filling, enrobed in decadent chocolate. Sign me up for more of that! Absolutely loved this place!

Yelp
I am a regular here. The staff is always welcoming and friendly. One thing I've noted over time is that they keep their staff and it appears that they truly enjoy working there. Everything is always fresh. Bakery items are a divine indulgence, salads to order and daily soups equally good. Whether eating there or taking out, I am always satisfied and always tip because they are so nice.

Yelp
Dangerously good and unbelievably phenomenal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Terrific selection and variety.

Gladys F.

Yelp
I moved into the neighborhood & started getting tasty bread here. As a whole I've enjoyed everything I bought but yesterday I ordered an apple pie & a muffin. I didn't look in my bag but when I got home the muffin was just thrown in the shopping bag on top of the pie box - wasn't put in a small bag (not sanitary!). I will monitor how my food is given to me in the future.

Yelp
It's easy for you to head to the same old chain day in and day out for watered-down hot chocolate or pastries. But make no mistake, Kneaded in Port Chester, is filled to the brim with gourmet breads and that Hot Chocolate- oh man....that Hot Chocolate- spiked with a subtle cinnamon taste. There's coffee too. This was THE EVERYDAY spot for me when I worked in Greenwich. Recently, I came for a much needed hot chocolate breather after one of my late morning Zoom lessons. Service continues to be ultra friendly, all baked goods are made daily from scratch and bread selection still rocks. In past years, this was the perfect place to sit back and enjoy your hot beverage and carbs. Because of the pandemic, Kneaded did away with indoor seating. So before you come here, just see it as a must. And whether you're grabbing your dough to-go or enjoying every single Hot Chocolate drop like I do, their products are second fo none.

Yelp
I've had Kneaded Bread bookmarked for years; even though the bakery is relatively close to me, I just never got around to checking this place out. One of my Yelp friends, however, frequents here so I am somewhat knowledgable as to what they offer. I took today off and since I had no real plans, I decided to take a ride to Port Chester and finally try it for myself. KB is located in the main commercial strip of Port Chester, right on North Main Street and across the street from the currently under renovation Tarry Lodge and Tarry Market. The bakery itself isn't too large, but because of the pandemic all the tables inside have been cleared away and makes for a vast space. They do a good job with social distancing with clear markers on the floor where one should stand, and also offer online ordering and curbside pickup. Most of KB's offerings are in coolers lining the perimeters of the bakery and a large display case which makes up the ordering counter. The menu is actually much more than the name suggests; in addition to a large variety of breads, they offer sandwiches, salads, beverages, cookies, cupcakes, croissants, rolls, plus other sweet and savory carbs. There was so much to choose from, but since it was lunch time I decided to go with their turkey and Swiss sandwich. For later and sharing, I picked up a chocolate chip cookie, chocolate twist, croissant, and two loaves of bread: sesame Italian and potato rosemary. KB can bake - the breads were soft with the right amount of flaky crust and chew; the potato rosemary especially had a really pronounced flavor. The focaccia on the sandwich was soft which allowed it to be eaten without falling apart, and they were super generous with the fillings. I also tried pieces of the other carbs which were all quite tasty - my favorite of these being the croissant, such flake. Besides the food, what struck me most about my KB experience was the friendliness of the staff. Everyone was warm, welcoming, and efficient - they really made my visit an extra pleasant one. Overall, I was super impressed with Kneaded Bread; they have a large variety of baked goods and an exceptional team running the show. I'm sorry it took me so long to make it over here - it definitely won't be my last trip.

Yelp
Listen. This was the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever eaten in my life. I say this as a person who has devoted a lot of time to eating chocolate chip cookies. It was huge and for the price?! a steal. Yes yes and more yes.

Yelp
Great cheese danish, and blueberry muffins. It's sad to see it so empty post Covid-19, but it's still a great little spot for breakfast, coffee and lunch. Good soups and sandwiches.

Yelp
This bakery is excellent. I go there whenever I'm in Port Chester. The produce an amazing choice of artisan breads and pastries all at very reasonable prices. A great place to stop at and have a coffee and pastry or sandwich. There is street parking and also off street parking with entrance just past the front of the bakery. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Excellent, well run bakery. Just beautifully presented and the taste lives up to the photo. So amazing to watch someone be so masterful with both presentation and flavor.

Yelp
Finally returned after quite a while. Was hard going here without my dad, as their baked goods were always his favorite. But the smiling workers, and happy, friendly cook sure helped lift up my spirits. And the brioche, pretzel croissant and Irish soda bread were the best you can find around BY FAR. Prices so fair for the quality . A must visit!

Aän V.

Yelp
All bread are GOOD! Service is fast and quick! The place is located in a corner and just the right size for everyone in line inside waiting for their turn.

Yelp
It pains me to leave only 3 stars. I'm in love with many of their baked and prepared food items and shop the bakery at least once a week. It's an indulgence for me financially and otherwise. I'm somewhat new to the shop, 1st finding it a few years ago, during COVID. Recently, when I purchase bread and ask for it sliced, I'm told they no longer slice it for customers, there is a "self serve" cutting machine in the public area for me to use BUT if "I need assistance, someone would gladly help". Now, between the lines and crowds at times, despite my very much wanting someone to help me do it for me, I acquiesce and hobble over to the machine whilst balancing whatever I've purchased there or came in carrying. I don't want to be bothersome and I get the feeling that's exactly I would be if I requested someone come from behind the counter to help me. Also, I don't want to be instructed. I'm not in the retail bread business. Several times I've left with a pricey loaf looking like it was run over by a truck. Gets caught in slicer, can't get it properly back into the bag.....you get the drift, all while I'm staring at the remains of some other's prior slicing remnants, hoping not to commingle them with mine. "How many unwashed hands have been in this machine's catch bin?", I wonder. ::sigh:: The meager piece of whatever the shop leaves to use as a sanitary guard for hands, is insufficient. Recently, I left with several loaves of bread to bring for Thanksgiving that we not presentable. I chose to not give them to my host. I really don't want to complain but I'm just disappointed. Is it REALLY that cumbersome or labor intensive and costly to slice and bag bread for customers? I question why I'm tipping often and well. Recommendations: provolone, challa, cranberry, sunflower breads. pretzel rolls, almond couisant, pecan sticky rolls, macaroons, CUPCAKES! And brownies. Salads are super as is the curried chicken salad and soups. Pass: Pre-made sandwiches. I love ya, Kneaded Bread but.......
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
Sweet staff with lots of gorgeous and delicious pastries. The sourdough loaf is also great and freshly baked! They also slice it for you or you can do it yourself for free! Go early because there can tend to be a long line and they run out of the best muffin, the morning glory, very quickly so first thing is always best!
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
Cozy bakery with a solid assortment of breads. There are not many pastries here - most of their offerings are just different kinds of breads. They also have a small counter with a few prepared foods as well I tried a mini baguette and it was pretty tasty The people were very friendly Some indoor seating 7
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
My favorite bakery! Breads and pastries are incredible! I also love their curry chicken salad and Chicken Cesar salad. Don't care for their cookies and brownies, but still not bad. I think my favorite treat here are the chocolate dipped macarons. Best macarons I've ever had! You've got to eat then the day you get them though, they don't do well overnight.
google avatar

Christy G.

Yelp
Delicious breads... nice place! Everything is fresh! Try the cranberry bread- awesome!

Kevin B.

Yelp
the bread is incredible and the variety is immense makes it hard not order everything! service is amazing its a must go to place

Yelp
Everything is delicious! I'm so happy with this new bakery find. We tried an apple pie with walnuts - totally delicious! Muffins are yummy. Solid Sourdough bread and challahs. Tried chocolate challah - I didn't think I'd like it but it was quite good. We will come back again and again!

Yelp
Lovely array of breads, sweets, sandwiches, salads & "to go" items. Excellent baked goods (their raisin danish are flaky, buttery and masterful!), fair prices (particularly for the level of quality!), and knowledgeable and gracious staff. Worth the drive from northern Westchester (and a Costco is 2 minutes away). Kudos to the Kneaded Bread team- well done!
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
Yum! Gorgeous and quaint exterior and a cool shabby chic meets mod laid-back interior. Booth seating and counter window seating (perfect for the solo traveler!). I got the blueberry muffin which really hit the spot-- not overbearingly sweet, ust right! Iced coffee was nice and strong. I plan on stopping by again while I'm in town to try some of their donuts! Update: also tried their cinnamon-sugar donut and "chocolate twist" (croissant). Don't be fooled- donuts weren't in the display case, but they had plenty off to the side, so make sure to ask! Delicious buttery, soft, cakey donut. The chocolate twists are to die for and I'm still dreaming of them.

Yelp
The Kneaded Bread might be the finest bread bakery in Westchester and possibly in all of New York State! I can't rave enough about their extraordinary ability to create the most exceptional breads, brioches as well as cupcakes and possibly the most delicious apple pies I've ever tasted. I'm in love with the cinnamon raisin breads as well as their chocolate challahs! I think you have to place an order for their chocolate challahs but I'd advise calling in advance to be sure that you can get every delicious bread you wish! Also on the weekends, they make the tastiest donuts you've ever tasted so it's worth planning a visit. In addition to their breads, they also make outstanding sandwiches and salads that are prepared in advance so you can enjoy a healthy lunch made with their fabulous breads! While we presently live in Westchester, i could imagine taking a drive to Port Chester from Manhattan, Connecticut or even from New Jersey! If you consider yourself a connoisseur of great breads, you'll make it your business to check their hours and plan a visit!

Yelp
Stopped in a few days ago for the first time. Got a black and white and a peanut butter cookie. The PB cookie was excellent, but I regret to say that the B&W was amateurish. Chocolate icing tasted the same as the vanilla icing. It was also refrigerated for some reason. Will return again when I'm in the neighborhood and try something else.

Yelp
I have stopped at the Kneaded Bread a couple of times and expect to become a regular visitor. In a world of chain stores and bland supermarket bread, this bakery stands out with its mind-boggling array of breads with everything from stone ground whole wheat or sunflower to chocolate challah. Apparently people rave about the provolone bread. I had a pretzel croissant and it was truly amazing, everything that's wonderful about pretzels and croissants all in one. I brought a mix of their cookies to friends and they loved them. I liked that they had a small box for a handful of cookies, which I gave out at my stops one day. They also have plenty of options beyond bread, including sandwiches, salads, and soup. I sampled a root vegetable soup on my last visit and it was so good I got a cup, perfect for a cold, wet day. What really impressed me about the Kneaded Bread was the pride that everyone seems to take in their work and what they make. I spoke with the manager and it was clear that the staff works hard to make sure everything tastes great. He told me that every day the staff will taste their baguette to make sure it's just right, explaining that different factors like heat and humidity can affect the taste. If you're looking for some great bread, baked goods and lunch items along with helpful people, I recommend you head to the Kneaded Bread.

Yelp
I got the cinnamon bread and when i tell you i was happy I mean i was jumping up and down with excitement with this bread!!! It tastes like a cinnamon bun in bread form which is amazing!!! LUV THIS PLACE! -Ella and Olivia

Yelp
I know I'm going to be in the minority here but this is based on my breakfast this morning and giving it 2 stars is fair for what I had. Yes, there breads look wonderful and I have had a bread from them in the past and it was very good but I digress. My friend and I met up for coffee and.... We both ordered cappuccinos. When we were handed them, I commented to my friend that it was very light weight, it felt like there was nothing in the cup? She said hers was felt exactly the same. If there was 3-4 ounces of coffee, I'm being generous, it was all foam. The woman whipped the milk to a frothy foam, kudos on that but seriously where the hell was the coffee! I got the almond croissant. Looked beautiful but taste, meh. I have had croissants in Paris and in St Martin so I'm no slouch when it comes to croissants especially almond and this was just weird. It was sliced down the middle and filled with pastry cream. WTH, it's not an Italian lsfogliatella. The filling should have been almond paste or at the very least nothing inside. The cream added nothing to the pastry but rather muted the almond flavor which was on top of the croissant. My friend (who is a heck of a baker) said her scone was good but my observation which I verbalized was her homemade scones "look better." She agreed. The scone was square. I'm usually not so picky but this was one time where the place didn't live up to the hype with what I ate.
google avatar

Shannon D.

Yelp
There was a false kindness in the owners speaking to me. They expected me to know exactly what I wanted, and when I had questions about the breads, the owner seemed bothered that I asked. She answered them, but I did not feel welcome.
google avatar

Saehui H.

Yelp
Really awesome baked goods here! The sticky buns are a must.Ill have to try other items on their broad menu. Now I have a new favorite bakery in Rye!
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
This place is great. From salads to breads they got everything you need. My favorite is the provolone bread and the chocolate bread. Outstanding. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Get the provolone bread you will not be disappointed.

AA A.

Yelp
Terrific bread. They should give more end of the day buys. The prices reflect the costs. Still they should offer one day old bread. There are many customers in the area with limited funds and the prices should reflect that. One day old bread would do it!

Joe K.

Yelp
I am a little bias but cmon. This is the spot right here. There just isn't a place in Westchester where you can bread, pastries, salads, soups, sandwiches, as fresh as you can at the Kneaded Bread. An institution thats been around for over 25 years. If you haven't been, figure it out.

Johnny W.

Yelp
Great salads and breads for lunch and more. The best almond croissant in the country. Get it and tell me I'm wrong. 10/10.
google avatar

Patricia L.

Yelp
I love love love their tuna fish sandwiches and bread.,been going for years, I always get the extra tub of tuna.

Janie S.

Yelp
My favorite bakery in Westchester!! The baked goods are incredible. The staff is super friendly. I come here almost every week with my dog and husband. It's the best tradition. My favorites- almond croissant, scones, challah
google avatar

Debrin S.

Yelp
It smells so heavenly when you walk in the door. I love the white Carrara marble and glass showcasing the variety of beautiful breads on display. This is the 3rd time I've enjoyed their fresh breads. The stand outs to me this last time were the Potato rosemary, seeded Italian, & crusty country bread. The potato rosemary was perfect w an Irish stew I made. The country crust bread was delicious for breakfast and the seeded Italian completed fresh mozzarella & charcuterie platter with friends. Bread makes the meal (or not). The Kneaded bread is a gem of a bakery. Of course the Brioch is divine too. I have yet to try any of their sandwiches, salads, soups or their desserts. Cakes and cupcakes always looks so tempting so perhaps next time!

Patricia G.

Yelp
One of the gem of Port Chester. Wonderful staff and delicious pastry and Latte!

Yelp
Found out last Thanksgiving, The best Apple pie period!! Tuna salad and chicken salad excellent. Cranberry pecan bread is my favorite all time bread, does not need anything good on it's own. Rye bread also very good. Chocolate chip cookies nice and chewy outside loved them. Just had the doughnuts WOW the best!!! Provolone bread. Is just like putting a slice of quality provolone cheese on a good fresh Italian bread. But it is already done for you. Delicious!

Pat T.

Yelp
Hadn't been in a while & it did not disappoint! The almond horseshoe danish-fantastic! Mini rolls are all delicious & perfectly sized. The tuna sandwich was amazing! My only complaint- raisin/walnut loaf needs more walnuts!

Tracie C.

Yelp
Look no further for the best bread in the county. Try the morning buns and literally anything else. Yum!
