Fire Hits Building That Houses Very Old German Restaurant in the Theater District | Eater Boston

"I relay that Taam China, a kosher Chinese restaurant in Brookline, is at the center of a criminal matter: owner Tze Ping Chung was arraigned last week on charges that he allegedly made secret video recordings of patrons using the bathroom, and the Brookline Police Department is seeking anyone who used the restaurant’s bathroom on specific dates between May 2015 and February 2018 for its investigation." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
This place was not the greatest. First of all, the service sucks. They are mechanical and not be rude, but they need to get waitresses who can speak proper english. Second of all the portions are tiny and overpriced. $12 for chicken that is dry and tasteless. Last of all, the actual building. It is filthy and dirty and there are insect everywhere. Not coming back again.

Google
Delicious! The sesame chicken was well sauced, but still crispy. Good soup too.

Google
Love this place. Been going here for many years. The best kosher chinese food! Highly recommend.

Google
Customer service needs MAJOR work. When i asked a question about pickup, the person answering the phone said "we are not that kind of restaurant." ?? I clarified I'm just wondering if ID is required upon pickup because I'm sending uber courier to go pick it up for me and they said "it's not that big of a deal.. yes." I promptly canceled my order upon receiving disgusting attitude, they sound miserable go elsewhere. He did sound like he had some sort of mental disorder but you need to learn how to answer the customers or get a desk job, customer service isn't for you

Google
Listen - Boston doesn't have a particularly gigantic community. There are many similar-sized communities whose demands also justify only one kosher Chinese restaurant. And most of the time, that single Chinese restaurant sucks or is pretty meh. The Kosher Wok in Brookline is the exception. The food is insanely good. It genuinely makes me question whether it's even kosher. It's REALLY good! Don't take my word for it. If you keep kosher you'll literally go bonkers at this place!

Google
It's a unique place where people who keep Kosher can experience American Chinese food. I love the atmosphere and the service is excellent!

Google
I was looking forward to eat here. Long time ago there was an actual Asian kosher restaurant that has been shut down and now a daycare. My experience at this place was not pleasant. I went in to order take out. The religious elderly lady kept googling my daughter and I, I respectfully said shalom. For her to not greet us but started asking my daughter what type of drink she has, she replied coffee (Starbucks) she quickly stated we could not come in with the drink and mentioned kosher. I respectfully left and refused to do any business there

Google
Egg roll was delicious. Sesame chicken had a weird unidentifiable sauce and a tiny bit of raw sesame seeds. I left most of it on my plate. Disappointing.

Yelp
We got takeout from kosher wok and it was solid! Very tasty general gaus and fried rice. The Peking ravioli were a bit burned, hence knocking off a star. But overall solid. Food was ready for pickup right when expected. Friendly front desk too.

Yelp
Delicious Chinese food, tastes better than no kosher options I've had many Chinese options, this restaurant takes the cake.

Yelp
Awesome won ton soup best I've had in 20 years the noodles and filling exquisite. Beef stir fry with dry-fried green beans also very tasty. Kosher Chinese in Boston again. Very happy today:) We always enjoy the "Italian pancakes" and cold sesame noodles and the kung pao tofu was chock full of zucchini, better than just celery. All in all a pleasant surprise at an old favorite.

Yelp
We ordered from here last week, because we have family visiting who keep kosher. We ended up going in to place our order and taking it home. The food = delicious. Everyone was super happy with what we got (which was a lot of food) and we were all satisfied. I can't speak to the wait staff, but the woman who answers the phone was not very nice. She seemed angry that we were sitting there, waiting for our order, and wasn't very pleasant to people who came to pick up. I don't keep kosher, but I would consider ordering from here again, because it was so yummy!

Yelp
I have not eaten at this restaurant in person; this review is on takeout. I can't speak to ambiance. The delivery was on time and the communication was good. Our order was correct. The portions were large. Unfortunately the food wasn't that great. The cold sesame noodles were bland. The wrappers on the veggie dumplings very thick and doughy but the filling was very authentic. The pineapple chicken tasted like boiled chicken, veggies, pineapple and sauce were thrown together and heated up in a microwave rather than being stir fried together to let the flavors mingle. Very bland. A tofu dish and a broccoli dish were boring. I want to support Kosher establishments in Boston but would not eat here again.

Yelp
I attended an event that catered from Kosher Wok. I tried a handful of dishes, including lemon chicken and general gau chicken. Generally, I prefer to go for Chinese food in Chinatown, but for Kosher Chinese food, this place isn't too bad. All the dishes seemed to be American Chinese style, so if you're looking for something more authentic, this isn't the place. Nothing was overly greasy or spicy, so I could see this place working for any tastes.

Yelp
The price is quite reasonable for kosher food, and the quality is passable. When they offered tofu or fish substitutes for any of their meat meals, I also used to look forward to their beef. Recently, I purchased their lemon chicken to go since I was craving some nostalgia, but it tasted absolutely nothing. The chicken we eat at home smelled sour and dead meaty like it had been spoilt. We have never returned.

Yelp
This is our family's go-to Chinese restaurant, and the best kosher Chinese food I've had. I can only comment on takeout, but we do this around once a month. Our favorites: peking ravioli, beef with eggplant, and our recent find Yuan Yang chicken (spicy chicken in large pieces, not fried, with string beans). Both the wonton and hot and sour soups are great.

Yelp
Best kosher Chinese food I've ever had! There are many better options for Chinese food in general, however. I found the laziji and the Hunan beef both quite tasty.

Jonathan K.

Yelp
We get takeout from here often. Tonight: Sweet & Sour Chicken, Chicken with Snow Pea Pods, Szechuan Crispy Beef, Beef Teriyaki. I didn't have the Beef Teriyaki or Chicken with Snow Pea Pods so I can't comment on them. The Sweet & Sour Chicken was good. The Szechuan Crispy Beef, unfortunately, was AWFUL. Not "crispy" at all. Not only that, but the beef was virtually inedible. I had to chew on one piece for literally a full minute to be able to swallow it, and even then it was hard to choke it down. This isn't just a takeout issue, either; we've had Szechuan Crispy Beef for takeout before and it was fine. It was just low-quality beef cooked extremely poorly. Extremely disappointing. By itself, the Szechuan Crispy Beef would have been a 1-star review for sure. The only reason they get two stars is because the other food ranged from OK to good.

Yelp
Customer service is terrible and whoever spoke to me should be fired. Asked if it was supervised kosher and she said: "Is that even a question? Who calls a restaurant called kosher wok and asks if it's kosher". Shame on whoever I spoke to and will definitely not eat here. Anybody could name their restaurant kosher wok, making sure its kosher for me is a real question that should be asked... I was really in the mood for some Chinese food.

Yelp
Updated review: when I last came here I got bad impression from the dirty fish tank and unusual smells. There was a strange looking fleece curtain that was dusty. Table was kind of sticky. Food was adequate. Would encourage a redesign and refreshed interior and deep clean of the space.

Yelp
Food is uninspired. If your only goal is getting Glat Kosher Chinese food than this is 5 stars because it is that. But if your goal is tasty New England style Chinese food then this is New England style but not a good version. I hate when the fried rice has frozen peas and carrots. That's just lazy and cheap. I did like the flavor of the hot and sour soup quite a bit but usually there are little bits of meat in there. This was the tiniest amount of meat possible in the soup. Again just could have put $0.25 worth of meat in there and it would have been so much better. I got a tofu dish with vegetables and the flavor was decent and there were plenty of vegetables but there was no flavor to the tofu. It tasted like it came right out of the tofu package with no thought about making the tofu more interesting. If I kept kosher, I would come back here because there are no other Chinese options but I don't keep kosher, so I think I'm all set for now.

Yelp
Writing an update review here. Before, I gave 2 stars, but I'm bumping it up one star. After eating there a few more times, the sesame chicken has noticeably become more tender and tastier! However, it is still a bit difficult to digest like before and the beef still smells funny and is barely edible. So there has been some improvement, but definitely room for more.

Yelp
We were so happy to eat here. The other reviews don't do it justice. This is the real deal-truly authentic and delicious. The steamed dumplings were great!! The Happy Family with beef and chicken was excellent.

Larry S.

Yelp
The food here used to be so good! Obviously, the new management isn't able to maintain the quality. We are so disappointed. We got takeout for Father's Day. The eggdrop soup tasted like mostly hot water and some egg dropped in. No salt, so flavor, no nothing. Worst ever! The beef teriyaki on a stick was burnt to a crisp and was like eating rubber. The main course of beef and fresh mushrooms was bland and not great. We called to let them know and they said they had a new chef and he forgot to add some ingredients. Really!? To their credit, they did replace both the soup and teriyaki beef which was better but still not great. We may give them one more try but if this is what they've turned into, we're out.

Yelp
The hot sour soup used to be much more tasty, thicker and authentic. Today all 3 soups Very Watered down. The Beef some pieces were UNDER cooked and hard me anymore my mom were both deeply disappointed. Quality down hill, not consistent, we used to go regularly. Even 6 months of not going it's worst, the egg rolls have shrunk and are much more greasier. Too much negatives and sadly we have lost our appetites. I guess hit or miss- go at your own risk.

Erica F.

Yelp
Rude, rude, rude! I hope potential customers will think twice about spending hard-earned money at this establishment. Whatever the problems with the previous owner, at least he was civil and often cordial to his customers. I encountered no civility on my recent visits. The cashier was disrespectful and surly, and the kosher supervisor unpleasant and indignant. I get that this is the only kosher Chinese show in town..but better to go without than support this truly heinous behavior.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed that they don't have beer and wine. The Chinese restaurant there before did. I asked if I can go across the st and bring something in and was told no

Yelp
This is such a convenient place for lunch and dinner . Originally, I didn't like Chinese food, but this restaurant totally changed my opinion! First, I had an Egg Drop and Wonton soup, which tasted awesome! We were also served tea as well. It doesn't end there, there was also a booklet about what else you can do in the city, as well as events happening at the restaurant. After, we ordered chicken dumplings, which tasted awesome to my surprise(past experiences, not so well). Overall, this is an excellent restaurant, would definitely come again!

Yelp
Customer service was super weird one guy was on his phone leaning against a wall and we weren't sure if he was a server or not and he asked us if we wanted anything and we were like yeah and he just stood where he was... weird. the food was super oily and I feel like I have to workout for 5 hours now. there was one guy that was nice though. not HORRIBLE.

Yelp
We had a delivery last night and the food was fresh and perfectly prepared. Go to this amazing Chinese restaurant whether you keep kosher or not. Simply the best Chinese food!

Yelp
Great Chinese take out! My kids love it and they are great with changing out veggies to meet the family needs!

Yelp
Went to the restaurant on Tuesday for dinner and was very dissapointed..... The place has changed with the new ownership: no longer has linen table clothes and napkins, poor service, the food has decreased in quality, and they increased prices. My wife and I will no longer eat at this restaurant, which decreases where we can have Kosher food....

Ilan B.

Yelp
They were very accommodating, moving tables to create one that fit our party of 7. Sadly the pleasant experience ended here. To start off, there was this odd woman standing in the middle of the restaurant giving me weird looks. This was off-putting. The food was just simply horrible. I have had some amazing Chinese food, and this was certainly not that. The pineapple chicken was simply inedible, and tasted like chicken smothered in ketchup. The sautéed green beans were undercooked, and lacked flavor. The lo mein was tolerable. The veggie "delight" was a glorified pile of broccoli. Is it t that the god damn chicken fingers that my little cousin ordered were the most enjoyable thing that we ordered? You be the judge of that...

Yelp
Delicious food! Happy there is kosher Chinese food in Boston. Very happy with the service.
