The Last House, near Tangalle, Sri Lanka - Explore & Book

"Sitting just along the coast from the up-and-coming town of Tangalle, and overlooking an often-deserted bay, is The Last House – the final residential work of famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Now a small hotel, it has views that stretch through open-sided pavilions, across the coconut tree-shaded garden to the horizon, and airy interiors which fill the rooms with light. A simple, uncluttered style runs throughout, and a signature Bawa veranda encircles the property, giving shade to the scattered planter chairs which face out to sea. Just beyond the garden gate, the Indian Ocean laps gently on the palm-fringed sands of Mawella beach. Couples can hide away in one of the 3 rooms set in the grounds, and there's a vast 2-bedroom suite upstairs in the main house – perfect for families with older kids to spread out in, or it can be set-up separately. The décor throughout is a striking mix of whitewashed walls, smooth cement floors, original doors and shutters, plump sofas, and colourful cushions. Head outside to the 10m pool in the central courtyard, explore the lush gardens, the nearby lagoon, and that beautiful golden beach, and end your day dining on freshly caught seafood served alfresco. If you were shipwrecked here, you'd be in no hurry to leave. Highs A fabulous location on the south coast; the area is famous for its turtles and you have direct access to the wonderful golden sands of Mawella beach Plenty of spots to unwind and gaze at the ocean view, including a stylish outdoor lounge and cushioned daybeds by the pool A great option for groups and celebrations – the house can be hired exclusively and sleeps up to 12 Meals use locally caught fish to fantastic effect. We still daydream about the 10-dish curry feast (served on request) The small, friendly team provides discreet yet helpful service Lows You’re 7km from the nearest town (Tangalle), and it can be difficult to find by tuk-tuk; we recommend using the hotel transfer service No kids under 10 allowed except for whole house bookings Book ahead for busy times, The Last House is a popular choice" - Ben Reed

The Last House (Tangalle, South Coast) 1 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"This one is a piece of architectural history, as much as it is a lodging. If you’ve followed the Sri Lankan tourism scene you’re familiar with the legacy of Geoffrey Bawa, the master architect known for his marriage of international modernism and Sri Lankan vernacular styles, as many of the island’s most remarkable hotels were designed by Bawa or his protégés. This one, the Last House, is Geoffrey Bawa’s legacy in a more concrete sense — as the name implies, this was the master architect’s final commission." - Tablet Hotels

Beautiful villa in a quiet, almost private location. The house was built in 2000 and has been faithfully maintained. Do not expect ‘modern’ or ‘high tech’ decor - just well designed, well kept, well aged luxury. It was a real pleasure to be in such an architecturally intentional, thought-through space. Each room has its own character - ask to see them if you can! The staff are reserved, discreet, and excellent. The beach is perfect. Highly recommended.

After driving along a narrow lane surrounded by tropical bush to come across an understated stunning house open to the beach was breathtaking. This house was designed for a family as a beach house by acclaimed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa . It is now a boutique hotel which entices you to throw off your shoes and lie on the huge sofa on the open verandah and relax. The accommodation includes huge bedrooms with gorgeous wooden furniture leading into open bathrooms plus private courtyards. The staff are easy going and efficient and the food superb. It was like staying with a friend!

This privately owned hotel accommodates only a few guests at a time. The staff are so attentive it makes you feel like you’re at home. If you are interested in a wonderful example of Geoffrey Bawa architecture then this is a “must see”. Beach frontage to a secluded location is accessed through a lovely tropical garden

The Last House by Geoffrey Bawa is pure magic. A place where time slows, nature and architecture blend seamlessly, and every moment feels effortless. Nestled on the best beach in the Tangalle area, it invites long walks on soft sand and perfect swims in warm, gentle waves. The rooms are stunning, filled with light and a quiet elegance that makes you feel at home yet somewhere extraordinary. The staff here are simply wonderful - warm, attentive, and always making sure your stay is unforgettable. And the breakfast? Absolutely incredible. Try the buffalo curd and the spicy Sri Lankan Omelett. We’re usually not the kind of travelers who spend much time in hotels during the day or have all our meals on-site, but The Last House is different. You don’t want to leave. Lunch and dinner here are as special as the place itself, making it easy to just stay and soak in the atmosphere. Step onto the beach, and if you're lucky, you might meet local fishermen who invite you to a sand game (spoiler: you will lose). A huge thank you to our fantastic driver, Taraka, who was arranged by the hotel and became our trusted companion for the entire trip. Always on time, incredibly skilled, and just a wonderful person - we highly recommend his service. The Last House is not just a hotel - it’s a meditation, a rare find, a place you never want to leave.

Returning to Geoffrey Bawa’s iconic Last House is like stepping into a living masterpiece. It isn't just a Bawa-designed marvel, it feels like a cherished family home—a place where you belong.||||The owner’s vision is evident in the details, creating a space that inspires relaxation and connection to nature. The staff are attentive and kind ensuring my stay was seamless—leaving me free to enjoy the serenity of the setting.||||Mornings began with a beautiful breakfast - and the joy of playing in the white waves of the Sri Lankan Ocean. I loved the fruit platter and the thamili with a Sri Lankan herb. I always looked forward to lunch and supper with a range of Sri Lankan vegetable curries - often after a lime soda or something stronger - I always felt full and never heavy.||||The gardens are lush and alive with wildlife: I love the different flowers - the water lilies, frangipani, and white bougainvillea. ||Peacocks strut across the grass, langurs run along the garden wall and eat the pandanus fruit, and the birds have become more diverse. The neighboring rewilding site by the lake has enriched the biodiversity, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.||||The Last House offers more than just a getaway—it’s an invitation to live beautifully, immersed in the harmony of design, nature, and genuine hospitality.
