"Some people dream of private islands with snowy sand and palm trees. Others fantasize about sleeping in a John Lautner house. For the latter, nothing beats this remote 1947 compound of luxury “living units” designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright protégé, the only Lautner residence open to public bookings. All concrete, redwood, glass, and steel, the four flats, which sleep two adults each, are distinctly designed with vintage furniture, organic cotton pillow-top mattresses, Heath Ceramics–tiled showers, and contemporary kitchens. Spend the day sunbathing from your private patio and cooling off in the saline plunge pool, and stargaze from the skylight above your bed at night. The micro-resort is self-catering, but that makes it all the more special—instead of eating in a restaurant, up to 12 people can dine under a communal redwood pergola; arrangements can be made for private chef dinners there, too. A hidden speakeasy-inspired bar for guests of the Ranch House (this additional accommodation, not a Lautner, sleeps four) only fuels the retro fantasy. Plan ahead: Weekends fill up months in advance."

"This part of the desert is a treasure trove of mid century architecture—Hotel Lautner gives guests a chance to call one of these gems home, even if its just for the span of a weekend. As the name suggests it’s the handiwork of renowned architect John Lautner and structurally, it’s more of a four-unit compound with a shared outdoor common area than a freestanding house or hotel (there’s no concierge on duty but maid service can be requested for extended stays). Taking in the surroundings, complete with succulent gardens, dipping pool, and fire pits, and bumming around the spectacular rooms (all are outfitted with vintage-modern furniture, kitchens, and a selection of architecture-themed books) is the extent of on-property activities, which is pretty great in its own way. There’s also an event space attached that can easily fit 200 or so people making it the ideal spot for a wedding."

The Lautner

"Three hotels in one - The Lautner, The Park, and The Ranch House. A four-unit desert retreat 15 minutes north of downtown Palm Springs. The Ranch House was designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1947 as a movie producer’s getaway. Mad Men in a terrarium. Each room is filled with quality mid-century-modern decor (a Warren Platner table, a Milo Baughman sofa, Bertoia chairs), but the real eye candy is the wraparound view through glass walls that overlook succulent gardens. Saguaro and century plants are dramatically lit at night, and a skylight above three of the rooms allows you to sleep under the stars."

Choosing the Lautner Compound as our wedding venue was an early and easy decision for us. It was exactly the modern, unique, and intimate setting we were looking for. Every inch of the Lautner Compound is designed with such incredible attention to detail that it’s impossible to have a wedding there that isn’t stunning. This beauty is all thanks to the talent and eye of Tracy, the owner. From the moment we met her, Tracy was warm, kind, and incredibly helpful—always ready to answer our questions and offer advice on what would look best in the space. Our wedding day was truly a dream, from getting ready at the Ranch House/Club House to dancing the night away. It's been almost two months since our wedding, and we still talk about how much we miss it! Thank you again for everything, Tracy!

Worth a stay. We had a great weekend. The owners elegantly restored and light modernized the original Lautner building to protect it from the harsh desert elements and make it a sanctuary for travelers. Comfortable beds, full kitchen. Great light. The shape of the building gives a sense of protection from the elements and welcoming in of beautiful light.

We had the most magical wedding at the Lautner Compound. Tracy, the owner, is so kind and very responsive. She also routinely makes design updates to keep up with trends. We had a micro wedding with her but hired all of our vendors individually. She does have a preferred vendor list now, all of whom we used since they were familiar with the property and the rules. However, they can host up to 300 people if you want to have a big wedding. They have an upper area and a lower level next to where most people have their ceremony. My girls and I enjoyed getting ready in the ranch house and my husband and his best man got ready in a Lautner living unit which is incredibly taken care of. I only wish we booked to stay the night in one of the units. You can’t beat dancing the night away under the desert stars. You do need to think about outdoor lighting and she has a preferred vendor for that as well as a generator to keep the lights on. If you love mid century modern architecture this is the place for you. The grounds are well maintained and it’s really an ideal space to make your own. We can’t recommend this venue enough. Do yourself a favor and schedule a tour with Tracy. You won’t regret it. They are closed in the summer months due to extreme heat. So keep that in mind when considering your date.

Interesting floor plans, restrained and tasteful, yet modern-age decor. I would love to spend a weekend sometime! The nearby event center is also quite nice. All together, a relaxing place and nice people. A Modernist Week win for us!

I had my wedding at the Lautner Compound and would highly recommend it! Tracy, the venue owner, and her team keeps the place in pristine shape, and it is a unique venue space with beautiful photo opportunity in every corner. It was also great working with Tracy during the planning process. Beyond maintaining the venue, she was very helpful in recommending additional vendors and sharing insights on details like table design and timeline. Tracy genuinely wants to help the bride and groom, and she was always great in answering all the questions I had. On the wedding day, the venue manager, Jules, made us feel so comfortable at the Club House, checking in often to make sure we had everything we needed. I'm so glad I chose to have my wedding here, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a superbly managed venue! PC: Takke Photography Floral Design: Studio Kate

I still can't believe how perfect our wedding day was at The Lautner Compound! It was the ideal venue for our wedding. We loved that we could take amazing Bride and Groom pictures in the John Lautner units and have a beautiful outdoor wedding in the desert. Tracy was awesome to work with and we feel like she's part of the family now! We couldn't have asked for better. Our guests were in awe of the stunning desert view, and we were lucky enough to have perfect weather. We highly recommend The Lautner Compound and can't wait to come back for future celebrations. It's worth the investment for a beautiful, love-filled weekend!

Four fabulous apartment units of classic architectural history. Extremely well furnished in mid century modern and each with a kitchenette and a private sunning patio. Located in a really cool compound. Looks like it would be a fabulous place for a wedding. Beautifully Lay down and functional. The owners are charming and interesting people.

The new owners have done an amazing job of renovating true to the original build. Do t just the rooms by the website photos as they are so much more beautiful than the photos can convey.

Yelp
What a SURPRISE... probably best kept secret in DHS! KUDOS to new owners who did the property justice... stay in one of the rental units if you can. FABULOUS event location, and our favorite MODERNISM home tour ever!

Yelp
The owner, Tracy, is extremely rude and unprofessional. I discovered that my experience was not an isolated incident. Multiple guests shared their own negative experiences with Tracy, including the event staff. It is evident that she lacks the basic understanding of customer service and how to treat guests with respect and courtesy. Couples who are looking for an enjoyable wedding experience should seriously reconsider choosing The Lautner Compound, if they want to avoid the same mistreatment.

Yelp
Cannot recommend the Lautner Compund enough! The micro-wedding package they offer is such an amazing option and we're so grateful we found this gem. Tracy and her team do an amazing job and make the process so easy. No wedding planning stress for us. We had such a special night that we'll never forget.

Yelp
This is a fantastic little oasis of just 4 units just 20 minutes from downtown Palm Springs. If you are looking for a nice quiet stay in an architecturally significant compound, this is it. The compound is 75 years old and is comprised of 4 units, outdoor common area with seating, dining table and gas grill. There is also a small plunge pool for use dueling the warmer months. Given the age of the property and exposure to sun, sand and the desert heat, it requires constant upkeep to maintain. Tracy, the owner, is a wonderful host and super accommodating. Her and her business partner have done an amazing job of renovating and updating the property. The grounds and landscaping are beautiful and each unit is quaint, quiet and comfortable. Beautifully decorated, each unit is well stocked and well cared for. We stayed over the holidays and found the property to be exactly what we were looking for: small, quiet and exceedingly comfortable. I most highly recommend The Lautner Compound for a romantic getaway.

Yelp
I am beyond happy that we chose The Lautner Compound for our wedding. Let me start by saying that Tracy is the absolute best. From day one when we wanted to go see the property, Tracy was very enthusiastic and super kind and sweet. When we met her, it was an instant connection. She was happy to show us around and provided us with her packages. We opted for the micro wedding package and boy am I glad we did. The thought of getting married was so overwhelming because we didn't know where to begin. When we met with Tracy, she made it so simple for us, we just needed to make a few selections, show up and enjoy ourselves. We worked with a fantastic and sweet florist Kate, a professional chef who made exquisite food (everyone couldn't stop talking about the delicious peach salad) and our photographer Benny who worked his magic and delivered some unbelievable pictures. The venue itself was just breathtaking and more than we could have ever imagined. In short, I'm extremely grateful that we had the opportunity to get married in such a special place with those we love and care for the most and I want to thank Tracy and her entire team for making it happen. I can't stress enough how wonderful the experience was and if anyone is reading this wondering if you should consider this place, I say without a doubt you should 100% call Tracy and make it happen because you wont regret it!

Yelp
I can't even begin to say how rude the owner was, rude to all venue staff, rude to all guest at a wedding I attend, I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy, that's how bad the owner treated our family.. Yes it pretty but not worth the money for how awful we were treated. Save your money, hope you feel happy for stress a bride and groom on there there big day and now all they will remember is your awful attitude! Your lucky you got 1 star, because I don't even think it deserve even that. Save your money! Looks pretty but trust when I say the most awful experience

Yelp
AWESOME venue for our friends nuptials!!! located in desert hot springs, about a 10min uber from Palm Springs, this locale is quite inconspicuous in a residential area. the place is deceivingly large with a wide open area dedicated to group gatherings and lounging. plenty of space for upwards of 200 people. there is a separate area for the bungalow rooms. the staff here was very accommodating and available to pick up after the guests and facilitate any other needs. the owner herself helped me out with the wifi so I can get ahold of uber. super cool and chic spot.

Yelp
This is the not-so-secret gem of the desert! The perfect presentation of the sought after mid century modern look of 50's Palm Springs. Tracy the owner has the most immaculate taste it's mind boggling. I own a catering company that works at The Lautner all the time, and have (in my humble opinion) a good eye for design, and this is the best venue in the valley. Also, for vendors, it's a great place to work. If you're considering it for your wedding I would say book it before the date is gone!

Yelp
I can not praise this establishment enough!!!! 5 star all the way. Exceptional customer service. Our host went out of our way after our room had to be changed the day of arrival due to unforeseen circumstances beyond their control. She left a beautiful gift that was beyond necessary and extremely appreciated. My husband and I needed this get away for many reasons and it exceeded our expectations. The indoor outdoor lay out is refreshing and renewing. The architecture is mesmerizing and peaceful. You feel like your in your own private Palm Springs getaway secluded yet open , incredible!! We can not WAIT to come back. Thank you to the management of this beautiful property for going above and beyond

Yelp
The Lautner Compound was one of the first venues we researched on our hunt for the perfect venue and the second we saw it we knew it was perfect for us! As our search continued we realized nothing else compared and The Lautner had set the bar for us! We were absolutely thrilled when we visited and saw that everything was even more beautiful and stylish than even the photos could express. We immediately hooked and are so very happy that we made the choice to go with it! Tracy the owner was a delight through the whole planning process. She helped us with all our questions and was responsive, kind and professional at every step of the way! The big day went off without a hitch and Tracy and her team were there to make sure us and our guests had everything we needed and more. The property looked amazing and we feel so privileged to have had our special day there!

Yelp
We were invited to their fall open house. The title was Opening Party for the Pros. We were excited. We received our tickets. Today, we received an email from the Lautner Group cancelling our registration because we do not work in the party industry. Now, they've clarified that it is only for Wedding and Event Industry Professionals and not open to the public. We are very disappointed.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Tastefully reworked John Lautner Motel is a must for any enthusiast and people who appreciate a highly stylized and piece full experience away from home. A nice touch are all the John Lautner books and documentaries as well as a very well curated movie and music selection in the room. Thank you for a great stay!

Yelp
I recently spent a weekend here and it was fantastic. What a piece of history. The architecture is incredible and the amount of detail put into reviving this place is truly amazing. My friend and I couldn't stop marveling at the design, it was almost as if we walked back into the 1950s. If you're a fan of Mid-Century Modern, then you have to stay here. I highly recommend staying here for at least a couple of days to get the full desert retreat. The only negative thing we experienced is the mattress was almost a little too soft, but the Frette sheets all but made up for it. All in all, a super relaxing experience. ** Be sure to watch the Julius Shulman and John Lautner documentary DVDs that come in the room!

Yelp
Came for a Sunday overnight with my BF who was in town for the weekend. It did not disappoint in any way! We had a spectacular visit. For anyone who appreciates mid century architecture, particularly of John Lautner, you will be grateful that this place was so lovingly renovated. They retained the original design while enhancing the mod cons and luxury conveniences. There are four units, all of which are extremely private. The shared fire pit we had to ourself, and was amazing at night. There is also a gorgeous BBQ and little heated plunge pool. And O. M. G. The mattress! 'nuff said. We will be back. It was amazing.

Yelp
Ah, what a perfect weekend we spent at Hotel Lautner. Somehow, I think that the remoteness of the hotel is a major part of it's charm. It's a desert oasis that is meant to get you to relax. You won't be walking to any bars, restaurants, or attractions. You will go pick up something to grill at Vons, some beer, and a copious amount of ice, and you will camp out by the fire pit and enjoy the feeling of the fire licking your toes while the wind blows. If that sounds rather poetic, it should, because it was. I think one thing that needs to be understood about the hotel is that it's the owners' pet project and they have made a huge effort to make it perfect. That means that your room is stunningly private and well-appointed, but some things are a little strange. For one, induction burners set into a metal ring in the counter top do not work unless you lift them up. Once we figured it out, we laughed and continued cooking. We spent a lovely evening by the fire, relaxing and chatting with a few other of our neighbors in the hotel after we came back from Palm Springs (a quick drive away). The soaking pool is cool in the 100+ degree heat, and you will want to skim it before stepping in if it's been windy - it gets a lot of desert flotsam in it. The bed was overwhelmingly dreamy, the sheets super soft. Tracy has thought of most everything one would need to be comfortable and happy for a weekend getaway. I can't wait to come back sometime soon!

Yelp
We stayed in unit #3 this past June for a Saturday night stay. We were extremely disappointed! Only a couple of bright spots. Tracy was very friendly and responsive to emails and phone calls. The outdoor common grounds were accurately represented by the photos (except splash pool area-see below). Here's why I'm giving the hotel a 2-star rating: -Upon entering our unit, we were met with a blast of hot air. The outdoor temperature was in the 100s on this day. Our unit was a furnace. It would have been wise if the air conditioning was turned on in advance of our arrival. -Our room was nice, but definitely didn't wow us like the magazine worthy photos did. -Our room had a musty odor. -Some of the furniture definitely showed signs of wear and staining -There is only an A/C wall unit. Because our room was so hot, we could only cool down if we stood directly in front of the unit. Literally, if we took 2 steps away from the A/C, we started sweating. The bathroom never cooled down. -We tried taking a nap, but that wasn't happening because of the heat inside of our room. -The head of the bed was directly underneath the skylight windows so sunlight was hitting our faces. -The heat inside of our unit was so unbearable during the day, we had to leave. We left and went to the Ritz Carlton to relax and cool down in their lounge. We didn't return until the sun set. We were only inside of our room from about 9pm until we checked out at around 10am the next morning. We requested a late check out, but because our stay was such a let down, we left early. -Our refrigerator was not working properly. I was told by Tracy, the cleaning staff left the refrigerator door open so our beverages never really got as cold as they could have been. The refrigerator wasn't functioning properly until the next morning. Too late since we were checking out by that time. -Wi-Fi wasn't working. Called Tracy and she advised that sometimes it's glitchy. -There are no lounge chairs by the pool as pictured in some of the photos. The lounge chairs were replaced by bench seating. The pool area is also covered to lessen sun exposure. If you want to get sun, you won't get it by the pool. Note, the pool is actually a large jacuzzi. -We were so disappointed and miserable with our room and stay, that if we could have, we would rather have gotten a refund and spent an additional $150-$200 to stay elsewhere. Other things to note (these did not affect my Yelp rating): -The hotel is located in a middle/lower middle class neighborhood and is a good 25 minutes drive away from Palm Springs. -Not sure if this area is susceptible to high winds, but on the day/night we stayed, it was extremely windy. So much so, that we couldn't use our patio or the common outdoor lounge areas. Each time we went to the Palm Springs area during our stay, there were no winds. -The DVD collection is outdated. -It's possible that one's stay experience may be different during more mild temperatures. Unless you absolutely have to stay in a John Lautner property, my advice...there are so many nice hotels and homes in the area, I would stay elsewhere. Even if you had to spend more $, I think it'd be worth it.

Yelp
I just had my wedding at the Hotel Lautner and it was the most incredible and wonderful day!!! Kip the events coordinator and Tracy the owner were so absolutely amazing to work with and took such great care of us. They continually went above and beyond for us and treated us with so much care and love. The venue is stunning, and SO well taken care of. It's such a gorgeous venue that you don't even need much in the way of decoration, it's already so beautifully lit and landscaped. The outdoor event space was perfect for us, plenty of room for catering truck and tons of space for everything we needed but still felt intimate. Lot's of outlets, and they also have bathrooms in the space. They have thought of everything you need. The 4 rooms were amazing for us to stay in with our family over the weekend, and Kip gave us such fantastic reccos for vendors and other hotels in the area to host our friday night burgers and beers and our sunday pool party. (THANK YOU KIP!) The pricing was an incredible value to us, we didn't need to get flowers or lights and that saved us tons of cash. We were able to stay on budget with no surprises, which was SO major. Kip and Tracy were so on top of every little thing, fixing problems before they even happened and so present and completely available the entire weekend to make sure everything was perfect. The details and the help from both of them went above and beyond and completely blew us and our families and friends away. I could list a hundred individual things either Kip or Tracy did for us out of the norm, but that would be a very long review. Most importantly, they treated us like family and made us feel like this day was just as important to them as it was to us. Words can't express the gratitude we feel for all they did. Our wedding weekend couldn't have been more special or perfect, and we owe so much of that to Hotel Lautner. I can't recommend them highly enough for a weekend away, OR an event of any kind. We will be back for every anniversary! THANK YOU SO MUCH Tracy and Kip, you are amazing people and i'm so SO very lucky to have found you and the Hotel Lautner. We will consider you friends for life and we adore you!

Yelp
We love this Hotel originally built in 1947, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protege John Lautner, recently remodeled/updated and very well done with new redwood inside and out. Heath ceramic tiles in the bathrooms.

Yelp
My wife surprised me with a two-night trip to the unique Hotel Lautner. We are both fans of mid-century modernism and as an architect, I've always been fascinated by John Lautner's designs. I can't thank the owner's of this hotel enough for not only saving this mid-century gem, but also lovingly restoring it with integrity. We were lucky enough to arrive when all rooms had just been prepared for the next wave of guests - but we were the first. Surprisingly enough, we were greeted by the owners who proudly toured us through each of the four rooms. While they are all similar, they are each uniquely and carefully decorated. Every detail was considered by the owners. They not only put in a first-class kitchen and bathroom into each of the units, but decorated each room with period furniture that makes the experience totally authentic. The Frette bedding and towels along with the L'Occitane bath products contributed to making the total experience luxurious. I've read some reviews that complain about the location of the hotel. But for us, it was not a problem. In fact - the Hotel Lautner is a perfect analog to the desert. It is truly an oasis. Being remote from the busy downtown area allowed us to sit with the other guests around the fire-pit and enjoy the setting sun and marvel at the brightest stars I've ever seen. After we had our fill of the peace, my wife and I hopped in the car and drove 15 minutes to busy Palm Springs for a lively dinner before returning to the hotel for R&R. It was a perfect balance of the social and spiritual which makes the desert a destination. Finally, each room is totally private. You have your own secluded garden and terrace which you can't avoid since half of the walls are glass. There is nothing like the experience of falling asleep at night while looking up at the stars through a glass roof and then waking up in the morning as the rising sun plays a symphony with light and shadow on the angular walls. OK - maybe that last line was a bit too poetic, but that's really the way this place makes you feel!

Yelp
Stay in a one of a kind architectural landmark. Only a few of the commercial spaces designed by architect John Lautner are still in existence to my knowledge. So this is a rare opportunity to see a Lautner building up close. They have done a great job on the restoration. We stayed in #3 - "The Bachelor Pad." A must stay for the design conscious. Highly recommended boutique hotel.

Yelp
Let's get "the location discussion" out of the way: You are in Southern California, the land of the automobile! You'll drive and you won't care. The hotel is 15 minutes from downtown Palm Springs - one left, one right, one left and you're there. However, it is not the type of area where you will be walking the blocks, talking to the neighbors. You will stay in your Lautner sanctuary with everything you need, and you will love it. Tracy is an awesome host. She's responsive to emails, answers her cell phone, and is as available or as invisible as you choose. She loves this property and it shows. She has big dreams for the area, much like Lautner did... I hope it works for her!! The rooms are luxe and well appointed. Nothing is left undone and all is lovingly restored. We stayed in Unit 1, which was so delightful. A wall of windows surrounded by a succulent garden and a private patio. The bathroom is so great with a rain shower and rock floor tile. Comfy on the feet. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud and with the row of windows above our heads, the moon passed over us all night. Wow. Tracy provides eye masks for sleeping, and I took mine as a momento (sorry Tracy)! The only quibble I have is that Tracy needs to buy an ice machine for the units to share. We bought a bag of ice and put it in our refrigerator; it melted over a couple days, so put a towel under it. That's about it. We can't wait to go back. It's affordable luxury and you are living in a master work of architecture - or at least, architecture by a master.

Yelp
One of the very coolest things about the desert. Combine an amazing John Lautner hotel and restore it with an organic twist and you get the lautner compound. I'm inspired every time I go. You also never meet a kinder proprietor. Beautiful inside and out.

Yelp
They've done an amazing job restoring this hotel, to a state possibly better than it was when it was originally built. The rooms have been designed within an inch of their lives. If you've ever wanted to stay in a Lautner, this is your chance. The hotel rooms show what can be done with a limited amount of space in the hands of a genius. The rooms are extremely quiet and private, yet open and bright. Desert Hot Springs does not have a lot going on it's true, but this is only 20 minutes or so away from Palm Springs. You can stay in your own private Lautner oasis, and head in to PS for dinner. Tracy was very accommodating and helpful. Will be back

Tara B.

Yelp
I should mention right off the bat that I've never actually stayed in the hotel. I took a tour during modernism week, but am hoping to make a longer visit out there again soon. Other reviewers have described the hotel as an "oasis," and I agree with the description entirely. It's located a few miles away from Palm Springs on the edge of a deserty neighborhood. Not ideal if you're there to hang out in town for long periods of time, but great if you just want to "get away." If you're into modern architecture, this would be a great place to stay. The rooms are uniquely furnished and have enough amenities to give them the feel of a studio apartment. While each room isn't particularly big, the windows and mirrors give the illusion of a much larger space. (At night, I'm told you can even see the stars from your bed.) Despite the many windows, the rooms are designed in such a way that outsiders cannot look in. Not without a ladder, anyway! I asked the tour staff about the price, and they estimated low 200's per night. More than reasonable given the quality of the rooms. I can't wait to spend a weekend there!

Yelp
Amazing Christmas spent here. We stayed in room 3. I was blown away from the moment we walked through the door. The hotel is extremely private, and by private I mean it's highly secured. There are many cameras throughout the gardens and all doors must be locked at all times. The rule book that was included in our room was extensive. The rules made sense however. Each of the four suites is unique which was awesome. The hotels owned by a very reputable interior designer. She also designed the LA fitness club Hotel - downtown LA which I didn't know until staying here and being schooled on the hotels history by Skipp the hotels concierge/front desk/all in one kinda guy. He gave us a tour of the other rooms, he has a wealth of information to share. While the hotel is a bit away from down town Palm Springs, it's not a big deal. I liked that we were away from the hustle and bustle. It was a nice 15 minute drive if that to get downtown. This hotel is worth every penny, it's an experience to say the least. Like nothing I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Yelp
Well...as this place already has a five star rating, I suppose any sort of glowing review I might post may seem redundant. But I take it as further proof that I'm a high end of the bell shaped curve type guy when I say this is a mid-century restored modern slice of Heaven. If you want a pleasant repose amidst some of the most elegant angles you've ever encountered, accompanied with what Frank Lloyd Wright called "client proof interiors" in the best sense of the expression, stay here a night or two.

Yelp
My husband and I got married at Hotel Lautner three months ago. We had an amazing experience from start to finish. Tracy (the co-owner and manager) was nothing short of phenomenal in helping us put together our special day. We were able to communicate with her from start to finish, and she was keen on helping us have our dream wedding. We happen to be fans of John Lautner, and basically all things mid century modern, so it ended up being a no brainer for us. The hotel has 4 rooms, truly perfect for a small wedding party, close friends or family to enjoy for your whole wedding week or weekend. This also ensures that you and your loved ones will be the only ones on the compound that weekend. Many of our other guests stayed at Aqua Soleil, a 2 minute drive away with great prices. Sabine (manager) will also give wedding party guests a discounted rate. And of course, palm springs is just a 15 minute drive away... Somewhere between a bed and breakfast and a chic air bnb, this place is just the coolest. No, there is no lobby, bar or concierge - instead you get the ultimate in private luxury accommodations - every room has everything you could want for a relaxing vacation, equipped with kitchenettes and keurigs for your morning brew. She has thought of everything and spared no expense, from the frette sheets to the malin + goetz bath products. Her staff will turn on the ac before you arrive so the room is nice and cool, and they'll even que up some bossa nova to set the mood. Tracy has decorated each room with it's own unique spin and kept them true to mid century modern style, but made them feel, new, cool and modern for a contemporary crowd. Her design skills are apparent in the beautifully restored spaces as well as the furnishings she's chosen to decorate them with. Oh, and did I mention the landscaping? Desert perfection! When our guests arrived, they were directed to the event space which is adjacent to the hotel. My then fiance and I were each in separate rooms each preparing for our big moment. Our amazing photographer (katie pritchard) was able to capture us before the wedding without having our guests see me (the bride). The redwood and concrete walls paired with the gorgeous architectural lines of the property make the most beautiful backdrops! **(Also take a short 50 yard walk off the property after your ceremony to get some wonderful shots in the desert itself, another great perk!) It was quite the incredible moment when my music (lord huron - ends of the earth) started playing and the redwood gate between the hotel and event space was slid open, dramatically revealing me to our guests and my future husband. We had 50 people at our wedding (the space will accommodate up to 300) and we had our ceremony just inside the gate in the event space, with a gorgeous giant wood sunburst my husband built for me as our backdrop. Immediately following our I Do's, we were off for photo's and our guests were left to mingle both in the event space and on the hotel grounds. We set up our U shaped table so that we were seated at the center -again in front of but on the opposite side of our sunburst backdrop- and faced the gorgeous sunset over the San Jacinto Mountains. Our caterer prepared a delicious Paella dinner right in front of us on the event grounds -perfect since at the time of our wedding there was't a commercial kitchen on the grounds and the caterers were completely self contained! A tapas station, a bar and drinks station, our dj, our gift table, our cake service and several intimate seating areas provided by our boutique furnishings rental company (Little Bohemia) were all seamlessly incorporated into the event space with lots of room to spare. As the evening wound down we turned on the fire pit and had a blast just chilling with some close friends under the beautiful star filled desert sky. The event space is simple and perfect, with beautiful succulents and landscaping. It is a gorgeous blank canvas (100' x 100') on which you can create your perfect day. Another great thing about this space is the view! It looks upon the San Jacinto mountains, and if you're lucky you may get an achingly beautiful sunset to boot like we did. :) Tracy and her staff will work with you to make your day perfect. There seem to be endless configurations and options to utilize each space to fit your specific needs. The prices are very affordable (rooms and event space) and this was key for us. If you are planning a wedding now, you know how expensive venue and accommodations can be. With Hotel Lautner you get an incredible event space for a virtual steal! - in fact we would argue that the property far surpasses the offerings for other similar locations. We cannot recommend Hotel Lautner enough, we suggest you book soon because this incredible gem in the desert is about to blow up in popularity!

Yelp
An amazing and rare opportunity to experience one of the Masters of Mid Century Architecture up close. Rooms were expertly appointed with incredible vintage designer furnishings and decor! I created a Yelp account just to give this rave review on this great place (although if I'm truly honest, I'd much rather selfishly keep this Getaway Gem off the radar so we can always have it available for ourselves!!!) My fiancée and I got out of town for a quick overnighter last week and were incredibly impressed with every aspect of our stay here! Set a few miles off the highway in the corner of a small neighborhood (about a 10-15 minute drive to the shops and restaurants of Palm Springs proper) this deceivingly sized desert gem offered an incredible amount of space, privacy and serene solitude all compactly fit into the size of a residential lot! When we pulled up, our first look at the walled exterior offered up two thoughts immediately -"How beautiful is this gorgeously manicured landscape/hardscape in front of these grey stucco walls and wood gates?!?" and -"How in the world does all of what we've seen in the pictures fit into this tiny space?!?" It's all in the design... John Lautner created this incredibly compact and surprisingly private little oasis over half a century ago and Tracy and her partner Ryan brought it back from near ruin and beautifully updated the property, truly honoring the original design with absolutely amazing finishes. We're both huge Mid Century Modern fans and loved the furnishings in Room 2... Milo Baughman, Reggiani, and Sigurd Resell pieces all nestled in a cozy room affording a surprising amount of space and comfort! The walls of glass with a private succulent garden on the other side do an amazing job creating the illusion of a much more expansive space, and when I spent some time later that night looking at the stars on the patio, I never once heard anyone else even though at least two of the other three rooms were booked with guests. Personal attention and little touches & amenities were a true treat! Tracy (and Danny!) were extremely gracious hosts taking time to show us around the property and event grounds. We enjoyed a quick dip in the plunge pool when we came back from dinner in town and again, even though there were other guests, we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves! The bed was so comfortable, we wrote down the make and model since we're currently in the market for a new one! The room was cool, the linens crisp and high end, and the Kuerig was stocked with a nice variety of coffee pods! We were reluctant to leave and only wish we could've avoided our obligations and stayed on a few more days (or weeks or months!) Thank You Tracy and Hotel Lautner! We really truly enjoyed our stay here and can't wait to come back! All the Best Christopher & Rachel

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at hotel launder the other week and loved it. It's more than just a place to stay, it's a unique experience. We watched the documentary on mr launter that is in the room, and really admire his work. Best part is being able to lay in bed and look straight up at the stars at night.

Yelp
An oasis! My husband and I spent two nights at Hotel Lautner as a get away from LA. It was exactly what we needed. Everything about the aesthetics of the hotel and decor is perfect. It's obvious that every detail was considered and artfully chosen, translating into a luxurious and tranquil space. We found it an ideal base for a quiet weekend. We spent one day at The Springs - a nearby Desert Hot Springs mineral hot springs with great spa services - and another hiking in Joshua Tree. And we did a dinner and movie and a day in Palm Springs. The property is secluded. This means it's quiet and the view of the stars is amazing. But it's also a drive to get most places. If you're looking for a full-service hotel in the middle of the activity, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a unique quiet hideaway, this spot is perfect. We hope to return with friends for a retreat weekend.

Yelp
This place is such a gem if you're into midcentury modern design. It's truly out of this world. Not much of a pool, so it's a winner if you want an awesome place to stay but have other things to do during your day. But if you hang out on the grounds, you'll be happy and pleasantly surprised by how great it is. Mellow and fabulous! Lovingly cared for.

Yelp
If you're looking to escape the daily challenges of life...and return to a time when the world was simpler....all the while staying in at an elegantly simple venue....Hotel Lautner is for you. The word "Hotel" is a misnomer. I would prefer to call it The Lautner. No, you're not going to get all the "stuff" that staying in a five star hotel offers you...at a five star price. Truth be told, that's a good thing. We've stayed in plenty of five star hotels around the world but never have we stayed in a place that catapulted us into the personal world of a world famous architect's vision. We loved the privacy that our "villa" afforded us. We weren't staying in a hotel...we were staying in the private home of someone who was able to combine luxury and simpleness into one delicious experience. From the Frette sheets, to the towel warmer and rain shower in the bathroom, to the perfectly appointed furniture and art collection, to the kitchen fully stocked with everything you would need to create a gastronomic meal, to the impecible landscaping that features an illuminated cactus garden that fills the room with nature. This was paradise. The property also includes a fire pit that is ideal for sitting around with a glass of wine, getting lost in the trance of the flames, all the while gazing at the millions of stars in the sky. We also enjoyed the small pool/jacuzzi that is perfect for a daytime or evening time soak. The owner, Tracy, could not possibly have been any nicer or accomodating. She and her partner spent three years creating with utopia in the desert. Treat yourself to an experience you will not soon forget. I know we don't.

Yelp
What a beautiful little hideaway. You have to check this place out if you're into the whole Mid-Century Modern look that is/was old Palm Springs. Nestled away in a quiet neighborhood in Desert Hot Springs, you will feel like this is your own private hideaway.

Yelp
I don't know if I have enough superlatives to describe just how great an experience staying at the Hotel Lautner was. The host, Tracy, was extremely hospitable and the ambience is everything I thought it would be. Can't wait to go back. Thanks!!!

Yelp
I surprised my architect boyfriend with a stay here in early March. We simply fell in love. As Lautner fans already, we were excited about the possibility to "meet" one of his designs up close. What we did not expect and was a refreshing surprise, was the attention to detail and dedication to Lautner's legacy woven into every corner of the genius remodel. Tracy, our hostess-owner and designer, was accommodating, full of knowledge, friendly and just fabulous. We had martinis by the fire pit and dinner at Johanne's downtown Palm Springs the first night and on Saturday, we did a hike in Palm Springs that included views of other Lautner achievements (and exercise!) For dinner, I asked our group if we could just stay at the Hotel and bar-b-Que by the fire pit. It was a magical night. I sat with a glass of wine, watched the sunset by the fire pit and the memory of those colors and that moment still make me smile once in a while. Then we had a perfect steak and wine dinner and sat by the fire with our friends until late into the night. Among the many great things about the hotel is the oasis that Tracy has created, so private, so luxurious yet simple and elegant. The architecture and details of the remodel are truly meant for use and enjoyment "of the people" staying there. (Lautner would be proud) The word coined for the fire pit gatherings "Glamping". Glamorous camping and I highly recommend it! I could go on and on but I will just write again when we stay again hopefully this summer!

Yelp
Hotel Lautner is really a very special place. The rooms have been beautifully furnished and the attention to detail throughout is extraordinary. Really comfortable, really relaxing, very private and super chic. The outside space was equally impressive and we'd never seen such fantastic cacti planted in such clever ways around the property. The pool was warm and clean and the fire pit/bbq area was a real bonus. We'll definitely be going back again soon - although im sure it's going to be harder and harder to get a room!

Yelp
Hotel Lautner is the best! It was the last stop on our whirlwind trip to so cal last weekend and we wished we could have stayed longer. Tracy, the owner, was awesome! She really made us feel special and made sure we had everything we needed and that we arrived safely. We had dinner reservations at a restaurant Tracy recommended but once we arrived at the hotel, we didn't want to leave. We opted to stay in instead and marvel at the beauty of this amazing hotel, lautner was a genius! We will definitely be back :)

Yelp
I cannot say enough great things about Hotel Lautner.... We started planning our wedding back in October for a February wedding. Tracey the Owner and Kip who coordinates for Hotel Lautner could not have been more helpful. They bent over backwards to make every wish and demand we had come true....Because of the beauty of the property and the rooms we thought it very important that guest of our wedding (180 people) be able to see the rooms so we requested if we could have people attending our wedding stay at the hotel and have the rooms open for tours during the reception and Tracey the owner said as long as our guest who were staying there agreed it would not be a problem....All of our guest in the four rooms agreed and it was magical... During the planning over the past 5 months working with Kip and Tracey could not have been a better experience..... The Space for the reception was equally AMAZING...the setting could not have been better nor could our host.... So we want to thank HOTEL LAUTNER for everything they did to make our most special day even better....

Yelp
A beautifully renovated John Lautner building (a four-condo complex), and the only one open to overnight tourism. If you're already a Lautner fan, you probably won't need convincing that you should seize this unique opportunity, or that it's totally worth the $245/night (having to pay extra for the $2 Kuerig coffee pods seems a little outrageous though). We arrived on Monday and did a quick self-tour of the property: four matching units angled for morning sun exposure, drought-tolerant landscaping with some of the trippiest cacti I've ever seen, a fire-pit, and a jacuzzi-sized plunge pool to cool off. During our walk, we couldn't help but notice that the property was under pretty heavy surveillance (cameras everywhere). About 15-20 minutes later--just enough time to settle in--we received an unsettling text from one of the hotel owners: "I see you have arrived." This turned into something of an inside joke between me and my boyfriend. I pictured the owner as a Mr. Burns type character watching us on her creep-cams. We thought about taking a dip in the camera-monitored plunge pool, but ultimately decided against it. What the property lacks in privacy it makes up for in appearance. It's really a work of art. You need to see it at night to fully appreciate the angular motifs, illuminated by tasteful and carefully placed indoor/outdoor lighting. It's hard to get a bad picture of this place, and I got some pretty impressive photography out of it. It's also cool to wake up in a bed surrounded by full-wall windows into a private cactus garden. The hotel owners have capitalized on the architecture's swank "shag pad" feel and are really milking the James Bond theme. There are matching his-and-hers bathrobes and flip-flops, and hand-picked mood music to create the shag pad ambiance--both vinyl records and homemade mix CDs. The mix we listened to had like five different versions of The Girl from Ipanema. You can order a "wild bunny love package"--essentially a $45 bottle of lube with some condoms--and if that's too subtle, our room came with a signed book about racy sex sightings from a voyeuristic hotel owner (our Mr. Burns?). I think the Lautner architecture is sexy enough without these overt advertisements, which seem tacky by comparison. Then again, the Hotel Lautner experience isn't just about the architecture, which speaks for itself: it's about living out the James Bond romance the hotel owners are trying to create for you. They are the puppeteers in all this. All in all, the place is well maintained, though not perfect. A note to the owners: Unit #3 has a creaky back door, the bottom hinge could use some WD-40. The mirrored bathroom door doesn't close very well (the clasp on the top of the door has a loose screw), so we got a fractured mirror image of ourselves. Once we got past the fact that I had two torsos everything was fine. The perfume smell was overwhelming, though judging from other reviews on here it seems that Unit #3 has been pretty well used. I should add that the mattress was insanely soft for sleeping on. There is no smoking or medicating allowed in the hotel, though I'm reasonably sure it would have enhanced the experience. My boyfriend jotted down the manufacturer before we left. The Palm Springs area is a mecca for Midcentury Modern architecture, but you will not find many period pieces that you can actually stay in, let alone one this tastefully furnished. The surveillance is uncomfortable and some of the hospitality details are maybe a little over the top, but to us, Hotel Lautner completed our trip to Palm Springs. It's well worth a visit.

Yelp
My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the Lautner and loved it!! Tracy has done an incredible job restoring this little hideway with all the creature comforts to relax, de-stress and be inspired. Yes, it is off the beaten track, but just what we needed to get away from the pressures of life while enjoying the luxuries of "post-modern living". Loved the architecture, immaculate room with designer furniture and looking up at the stars at night...felt so private but full of life and natural light. Great restaurants are located only 15 minutes away in downtown Palm Springs and Two Bunch Palms famous spa is only blocks away...will definitely stay there again!

Yelp
The architecture of this building makes you feel like you're in the twilight zone in the best possible way. The beautifully remodeled space-age 4 room property and high surrounding walls lend to imagining you are in a very cool settlement on a distant planet. Unfortunately the customer service makes you feel like you are in the twilight zone in the worst possible way. There is no staff on site. It is in fact not a "hotel". It is a rental property and the owners treat guests as if they are doing them a favor by letting them stay there. I have stayed all over the world and have never encountered such rudeness. Not even in France, and if you've been there you know that's saying something. If you love Lautner, it's still worth a visit -once. Just be prepared for what you're getting into. There will be no pampering. No restaurant or room-service. No maid service. No heated pool. You will be expected to wash your own dishes and take out your own trash. It's a wonderful thing that this property was saved so hopefully they'll work out the kinks or hire someone who has some knowledge of the hospitality industry so they have a chance of making it.
