Hi Felicia: Staff Allege Bounced Paychecks and High Turnover Plagued Oakland Restaurant Ahead of Sudden Closure | Eater SF

"The team behind Lafayette’s Hideout Kitchen is launching the Library Social Club, a wine-and-beer-centric spot in Walnut Creek set to open this month; memberships are being offered at $100 to $150 a month in exchange for one to two bottles of wine, access to the space, plus tastings and discounts." - Dianne de Guzman

Had an okay visit to The Library Social club today. The décor was cohesive—the theme is akin to dark academia with rich paint colors on the walls, animal skulls and of course, tons of books. The seating options were disappointing as the benches along the wall had no cushioning and the couch we selected instead had flat, sinking cushions. The music was too loud for reasonable discussion with my friend, though the server did lower the volume at my request. I had a tasty flight of sparkling wines and the server gave a speedy, short introduction to the pours. My largest disappointment came with the arrival of the check. Despite signage outside the establishment that implied the opposite, I was informed that wine flights were *not* included in happy hour pricing. I found the messaging exceedingly unclear, and of course, there's no mention of happy hour on the menu nor did the server share the happy hour options when we were seated. It was a disheartening end to a midling experience up until that point. It's not that this place is terrible, it's just not that good and in this economy, that is a must. I will not be returning.

Super friendly staff(owner serve us himself). Awesome vibe. Beautiful bar, like a antique furniture shop. Me and my husband shared 1 pairing, it feels awesome to have the wine bar all to ourself in a Tuesday evening.

Google
Great wine bar with good local wine selections and also many imported ones too. The staff was super nice and gives excellent recommendation. The venue is classy but unassuming, but it's nice, cozy, and has a homey, casual vibe to the whole place.

My boyfriend and I originally planned to attend the Black Wine Festival, but the tickets were sold out. Instead, we decided to support a Black-owned wine business—and I’m so glad we did! Benjamin went above and beyond to ask about my taste preferences and made sure I was paired with the perfect wine, which he absolutely nailed. The gumbo was incredible, and honestly, the cornbread tasted like Thanksgiving dinner—in fact, it was even better than some gumbo we had in Louisiana! The space itself is cozy, intimate, and beautifully decorated. Benjamin also told us about their brunch and other upcoming events, and we’ll definitely be back. This spot is a hidden gem with amazing food, wine, and hospitality. Highly recommend!

I am impressed with the selection of wines the Library wine bar has to offer in Walnut Creek . 😍 My favorite wine was the Rose 🍇 🍷. I would say Rose pairs well with the warmer weather 🧀 ☀️ & great friends. The inside interior design is very calm and peaceful. Definitely will come back to visit again . ☀️🍷🍇 💖

I had a reservation at The Library Social Club Wine Bar on Thursday night, but when I arrived the place was closed with no notice or update online. Really disappointing, especially after planning ahead. Ended up going to Residual Sugar Wine Bar instead and had a much better experience there.. great service, good atmosphere, and they were actually open…

We went to the library social club for the first time last weekend and had such a great time! The venue itself was cozy, the flatbread was filling and helped with the wine tastings. What was really great was the hospitality! Benjamin was accommodating throughout our visit. He really went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable time. He was attentive, fun, and made excellent recommendations based on our preferences. He unfortunately was dealing a challenging situation with an irrational customer, but he was super professional. He provided the customer options and tried to resolve their issues (even though it wasn’t really his or the club’s fault). We signed up for a membership because of our experience and the service. Looking forward to attending fun events!

Google
This is a long overdue review. Stumbled upon The Library one evening while walking around downtown and been coming back ever since. The vibe-unmatched The service-incredible The food-way better than you’d ever anticipate(ask for the gumbo) The wine-haven’t had anything I don’t like All of this due to Benjamin. He’s recently brought in live music which just makes an already dope spot even better. His recommendations have never failed me. At this point I come in, tell him what I’m feeling like and he’s delivered every.single.time Hang out spot, special event(rent out the entire space), memberships, you really can’t go wrong. Make sure to make a reservation on Friday/Saturday evening because it fills up fast! Need an idea for Sunday brunch? The Library definitely needs to be on the list

Yelp
I was in town last week for a wedding and saw this place on social media, so I decided to check it out. I was the first to walk in around 4ish in the afternoon (they have happy hour!) and I was offered a seat and water quickly. I decided to order the smoked salmon crudo and the gentleman (I think one of the owners?) gave me some pairing suggestions. While that was getting prepared in the kitchen, he offered me a tasting of another white wine on the house, which was so kind! In the picture below... it's most drunk haha but it was a nice amount to taste and sip on. That smoked salmon crudo is SO GOOD. The citrus adds a nice brightness, and I think there was a hint of honey used in the vinaigrette. I was pleasantly surprised and it's easily the best smoked salmon dish I've had in a while! The wine was excellent as well. I was only in for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half before I moved on, but I got to hear regulars come in and greet the owner like old friends. There's a really cool vibe here, with great music and decor, so I really wished I lived closer to visit more often! As I was leaving, I did chat with the gentleman again (complimented him/the wine bar) and he said he hoped that I would come again as he is trying to work with his partners to add more to the menu (the regulars that came in were asking after the gumbo and the brunch, which they were not serving at the time). I definitely hope to visit again and try those other menu items!

Yelp
This social club is right on the strip and is a nice little spot to kick up your heels to partake in a bite to eat and wine to explore. I say explore because this is a wine bar in the truest sense of the word. Though I am not a oenophile, I do appreciate a varietal every now and then. The club is not big, there are about 5 benches against the wall and one glorious sofa for at least 3-4 of your friends. Neo-soul music in the background and chill vibes throughout. There are some bites to nosh on while you sip on the wines or 3 beers to choose from. I tried the salmon plate. Perfect with a Chardonnay or Pinot on the menu. There are also memberships that will garner you a flight of wines but I was able to drop in even without my library card. Yes, the library is just a block and a half away if you want to pair your wine and bites with a book.

Yelp
This place was cute and definitely a shop to stop by if you're into small bites and quick conversation conversations. I was not a fan of the menu( only a few items) , but could definitely understand the vibe that they were going for. The food was great but they didn't have a very limited selection of items. Beautiful inside and beautiful decor.

Yelp
Service - 5/5 (S/o to Ben!) Food - 5/5 Ambiance - 5/5 I cannot recommend this wine bar enough! Came on a Saturday around 1pm as a group of 4 and was seated immediately. Ben was our server and went above and beyond. Love everything from the Orange wine to the flatbread. Everything was delicious and the vibes were immaculate.

Yelp
Love this place!! Came here for late night drinks. We had a great time. Had a glass of wine - great place to have quiet conversations in very small groups. Most of their tables are two tops. There is one table upfront that can probably sit for five people. It's quiet, intimate, dimly lit. Perfect for catch a time with a friend, or a date.

Yelp
Well priced and very intimate. Service is great and the playlist is fantastic. Would recommend for a pre or after dinner drink.

Yelp
I love this richly appointed, atmospheric wine bar. We go a couple times a month to try a new wine and enjoy the delicious polenta and cheese plate. Benjamin (the awesome manager) is always there to help us choose wines and have a great conversation. Library Social Club is a beautiful, welcoming venue with great service.
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice and intimate venue. Cool vibes. Good food selection. Located downtown and close to parking. Nice selection of wines. Great customer service. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great wine, great food, (especially the Gumbo!) and the owner/manager is a great dude. We pop in here usually 1 time a month at least just for a great date night. Highly recommend The Library :)
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
We did not try the food here but this is a great spot to stop in WC. You are getting taken care of by one of the partners.... I didn't get his name and I wish I would have but he is awesome, he pours the wine, he books the music and he is straight up hustling to serve you while you are there. They had live music with a guy playing the keyboard the night that I went and it really made the environment relaxing and fun. The pours are hefty and I was super pleased with my bill at the end. The value per drink is really good. I was not sure about this part going in but it is one of the best parts and stands out to me. I will return here again!!!

Yelp
Came here on a weeknight with a friend and this place is so cute and cozy! It's not an expansive wine list, but it's a really good list. This time, I tried a Spanish Cab, and it was delicious! We also got the fruit and cheese platter and it was absolutely delicious and a great snack! Really nice place to catch up with friends and enjoy great wine! Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Jin Y.

Yelp
Amazing spot but space is limited and it definitely helps to have a reservation. The menu is limited, but the wine selection is pretty good. Have yet to try the appetizers and the food, but mainly use this place for after dinner drinks or just for a place to socialize.

Yelp
Very cute, very intimate and our server was just so wonderful. There's a small sitting room with a couch or two up front and then bench seats along the wall for groups of two. My cousin smartly pointed out that we are the books in this library when sitting on these benches! We were there catching up and had the pork belly buns and mascarpone toast. The pork belly was good and juicy (bun bread was just ok) but the toast is sooooo good. I love this toast. I love the crunch of the almonds (and I never usually like nuts on top), I love the honey drizzle, I love the thickness of the toast compared to the mascarpone layer. The wine was also lovely, but I'm a little sad they don't have a flight that goes across wine types. They do flights like 3 chardonnays or 3 Sauvignon Blancs. Ended up ordering two glasses instead and it still was great, but I'm a sucker for a great tasting flight. Our server was lovely. Just so kind and personable. He seemed like the only waiter/wine person and then there were a couple people bringing food out from the kitchen, etc. So a small operation and lots of fun. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Benjamin was awesome! We walked in today and had the best time. We love that there was a wide variety of wines from different regions. Not the usual stuff you see everywhere. The food was great as well. We had the smoked salmon crudo and mascarpone toast. Best of all, Benjamin was very knowledgeable and had amazing recommendations. Thank you Benjamin for making our day and answering questions. Hope to see you again soon!

Yelp
My mom, best friend, and I visited the Library Social Club yesterday and we were blown away! I need to be honest, from the outside, thought it was closed, and we attempted to open the door... it was open and what a little gem in Walnut Creek we found. The manager, Benjamin, made our experience unforgettable and definitely the reason why we will return again soon! Benjamin was incredibly kind, friendly, and attentive, ensuring we felt right at home and totally in our element! The ambiance was perfect. It was quiet and perfect place to stop for wine. Since it was our first time, I asked Benjamin for recommendations on a great rosé, and I trusted him to choose our second wine. He absolutely nailed it & we loved every sip! I had a hard time choosing something off the menu, but finally decided to order the meatballs with polenta, which were moist, flavorful, and paired perfectly with our wine selection. The entire experience was nothing short of amazing, definitely a 10/10 experience. We'll be coming back for sure, especially as long as Benjamin is there to guide us through another perfect evening! Highly recommend coming and checking this place out! Thanks again Benjamin!

Yelp
If libraries were this good, I'd have read a lot less in school and sipped a lot more Pinot. The Library Social Club is my go-to wine bar, not just because of the excellent selection but because Ben is basically a human wine encyclopedia with a hospitality degree. He's always professional, welcoming, and somehow remembers exactly what I like--pretty sure he's got sommelier superpowers. Now, I have been gently (okay, persistently) nudging him to add some vegan menu options, and while we're still in 'manifestation mode,' I have faith. In the meantime, the wine is so good that I keep coming back anyway. Whether you're a casual sipper or someone who can actually taste the difference between 'oaky' and 'buttery,' this place is a must-visit. Five stars and a hopeful toast to future vegan snacks!

Yelp
A dope getaway from the Walnut Creek shopping hustle. A hip spot to chill enjoy some wine, music, and the Gumbo which would make my grandma proud. Keep doing your thing Ben, you got something going on in a area where it's much needed.

Yelp
A lovely wine bar in downtown Walnut Creek. Extensive wine selection, solid food menu, and above all, really good service. Reservations are recommended - it's a relatively small, intimate space - and we didn't have one, but were still graciously accommodated. The gentleman who helped us (I'm terrible with names) was very helpful with wine recommendations, and helped me pick out a glass of white on the sweeter side, and my partner a couple of nice cabs. All delicious. We also had a very tasty cheese plate with three cheeses and assorted fruits/nuts for a very reasonable $10. Good music, and not loud, allowing us to talk without yelling, unlike many places. They have customizable wine club options as well if you're interested. We will certainly return.

Yelp
If you haven't stopped in, you have no idea what you're missing! Welcome to the official Speakeasy of Walnut Creek. This spot is a true vibe with a diverse customer base and stellar staff from my favorite Lafayette hideout. Pun intended. Do yourself a favor and stop in to enjoy the melodic sounds flowing through the space, the exquisite selection of wines, the delicious bites and the courteous staff. This spot will not disappoint!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
As of 09/19/23: they're hiring! For a front end/food prep. One of the sister businesses to Hideout, the Library Social Club is one of the best in downtown WC from quality local vineyards. They partner with a lot of individual places as opposed to chain, and Eddy and JP are so helpful and welcoming. Their malbec and prosecco were delicious and both paired well with the compound butter and toast. We made a reservation online but were also able to walk in. All gender restrooms, high quality wine glasses, wonderful options. This is a staple place to visit in DTWC
google avatar

Yelp
This is my usual wine bar in Walnut Creek. Why? It's nice, it's cozy and lots of great wines to try out. The difference between Library Social Club compared to other wine bars is that it feels intimate. It's a small place. Also the wines here are pretty obscure to where I don't feel like I can just go to Total Wine and find a bottle. Benjamin always makes sure to take care of me and knows what I like, what I don't like and usually gets me a bubbly or a rose as soon as I come in the door. (Which are my usuals). No seriously, I think I walked in, got seated in my "usual spot" and then got a glass of sparkling rose poured quickly. Next time though, I'd love to get more of the flights. Since the wines are obscure, I do like drinking here more than other places. Do call in to check on spacing because it can be crowded and up to capacity.

Yelp
Benjamin was great. A warm welcome when we first entered. A small intimate spot with enjoyable music. They also have a tv in case you would want to watch sports or a show. Our first visit was great and would come back again.

Yelp
I've been dying to come here since last fall when I first heard about it. Took myself in for a date tonight when I was tired of waited for friends to be free, and I couldn't be happier I did. Did a flight of whites, a glass of a Bordeaux blend, a half glass of a French Pinot. I was a wildly impressed with the wine selection, bites (cheese and fruit was perfect for the selection and price), and ambiance. Ben was so fun to chat with and the vibes here are perfect for a date night on your own or with another. My partner isn't a wine drinker, but I did see a beer selection listed, so I'll be back to report on a date night as there is no doubt I'll be back again. Walnut Creek may not have the speakeasy or late night scene, but the wine scene just gets better and better, and The Library is an amazing addition.

Yelp
Delicious food. Have the gumbo! Excellent service. Very nice wine flights. Comfortable seating. Small venue.

Yelp
Very cutesy, very quaint, very demure. A small group of us went for Sunday brunch to celebrate a friends birthday. The chicken and waffles were on point, there was also a taco bar, I personally did not have any of the tacos but everyone said they were tasty. Bottomless mimosas for everyone was a plus. If you are looking for a place to go for a first date, this is the place, the noise level is very low and allows for an intimate conversation. Make reservations for a Saturday or Sunday because this wine bar is very small and has limited seating. The host Benjamin makes the experience all that it is. Thanks for the top tear hospitality. I'm glad I listened to my daughter's suggestion.

Savannah H.

Yelp
We went here for Mother's Day and it was the perfect vibe we were looking for. The wine was great and the owner made perfect recommendations. We ordered food and it was all tasty. Some items were light appetizers and others were more filling. This place could be a wine and lunch spot or wine and snack pairing spot depending on your appetite.
google avatar

Hayley D.

Yelp
Loved the custom wine tasting as the owner knew his wine and had great recommendations! The ambiance was beautiful & I can't wait to come back!

Maegan M.

Yelp
This was my first time at The Library and it was fabulous! The reviews are right that it is a smaller bar with very intimate spaces for 3-4 people. We went with a dear friend, Carla (who was a regular) and another friend of mine. The owner, Benjamin nearly made my 5 star review the review it deserves. He was very attentive with our glasses and was nearly in charge of 4 tables at one time. I felt like my glass was always full! I invite you to drink here because you will be taken cared of! Benjamin you rock! Thank you for taking care of us!

Maria M.

Yelp
The service is good, wine knowledge good. Space for seating is limited. Food was good. But this review is specific about me asking for water for my dog. When I asked for water for my dog they flat out said no. They couldn't think to give me a to-go box container to put water in and give to my dog outside? I didn't press the issue but I was shocked that this place doesn't have a water bowl for pets like almost any other retails store or restaurant in Walnut Creek. I could have paid for a box to put water in. It's the ONLY place that's ever done that around here. Please do better for your customer's furry family members.

Yelp
We like an occasional wine bar. Not the snob wine but more the we know what we like and what we don't like. This was our first time here and not only did I think it was great, but my partner also thought it was great. A great wine selection that included  some Napa wines, and others. Also, they have multiple food options. We had the cheese board. It was great. We saw the flatbread and other options. As a wine bar, this was way nice. We will be back. We may even consider their wine club. Very,  very nice.

Yelp
Benjamin has expertly crafted a relaxing lounge atmosphere at Library Social Club, complemented by a distinctive wine list and delicious bites, making it a standout gem in Walnut Creek. The top-notch service, combined with Benjamin's laid-back personality, makes this one of my favorite places in WC to unwind and savor excellent wine, food, and ambiance. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
A perfect spot for indulging, with your special someone or small group of friends. Definitely order the bread, omg it inspired me to make it myself at home. Come and stay a while, get pampered with pours, you will find so many bottles you will love.

Yelp
Nice intimate place to stop by with friends or date night! The location offers glasses of wine and as well as flights. Large selection of wines to choose from, from a variety of regions. They even offer a wine club membership. The food offerings are fresh and delicious. 10/10!

Evelyn D.

Yelp
The wines and service were excellent. They have a nice selection of wines from boutique wineries. The place itself is uniquely decorated with a cozy vibe. It's small, reservations recommended.

Yelp
This is an amazing wine bar! I came here with my coworkers for a company happy hour. The place looks very clean, modern yet retro, elegant, edgy and artsy. Decors are tasteful. It is very "viby" The host was very accommodating and very knowledgeable about wine. We were able to do the flight and tried many different options. The snacks are on point and fresh. Price was great. Will definitely return with friends and clients.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was amazing, the ambiance is cute and quaint, boho chic for sure! Great selection of wines to try. Recommend making a reservation on their website!
google avatar

Abha S.

Yelp
Lovely cozy venue for wine and small bites. Service is very hospitable as well. It's limited seating so maybe call ahead to see how busy they are. Parking can be difficult on the weekend!

Larissa G.

Yelp
The best experience with wine in my life! The service, wine, place and food are the best amazing vibes! for sure is my fav spot in downtown now!
google avatar

Yelp
Wife and I were walking by and went in on a whim. Ended up staying longer than we expected trying all their suggestions. Wine was really represented globally and not just what you can get easily from near-by Napa. Rosé flight was great. Snacks were great. Food was great. I've told my 'wine friends' to check this place out before it's too hard to get a reservation soon.

Yelp
It's Sunday around noon and this place was deserted. It looked dark from the outside so I wasn't even sure if it was open. Pushed on the door and to my surprise, it is in fact open. I was in town for a few hours and looking for a place to grab a light lunch and maybe a glass or two of wine, and this spot was highly regarded and seemed relatively new. I asked to take a look at the wine list and there were many BTG options and also some bottle options, in my opinion, the selection was pretty generic and not super interesting. The average BTG was around $15 and most of the wines I looked up wholesale for around $12-20/750ml. There were some okay options, but a lot more interesting wines were being offered by the bottle. I inquired about a couple of the options on the list and was told they really didn't have any of the wines being offered by the bottle at the moment due to restocking and haven't updated the menu yet. Okay, no worries, I stuck with a couple BTG wines they did have (some of these were out as well), and then inquired about food. Unfortunately, I was told they don't really do food on Sundays. The BTG wines were okay - relatively good representations of the varietals/regions, but certainly far from the best. So far, things were pretty disappointing. The employee working there was quite apologetic and it sounds like they have some kinks to out still - 100% to be expected for any new establishment. Having updated lists is fairly important because after one or two options not being available, most consumers are going to be pretty frustrated. In addition, having been to wine bars all over the US, I've rarely encountered a situation where half the menu is 86'd so I do feel the owners can do a better job of inventory and keeping the lists updated. Other wine bars have figured this out so I know it must be possible :) All that being said, I liked the decor and it does seem like it would be a fun place to hang out. I liked the service as well. I'll stop in again in a couple months to see how things are going and hope they've got a lot of the kinks worked out.

Mira M.

Yelp
We came here to celebrate a 50th birthday, girls night out. Started off fine...since it's only small bites on the menu and 6 of us, and this was going to be our dinner, we ordered one of each, to share. But then we were brought a chicken gumbo that we didn't order because it's not on the menu. I believe he said this isn't on the menu, and we said we were ok with it and wanted to try it. No problem. We enjoyed the gumbo, it was good. But then the bill came. They put the gumbo on our bill twice. A $20 one and a $50 one. We tell him about the mistake and he says he'll take the $20 one off because that's a single serving. And keep the $50 one. WHAT!!!??? How on earth is a bowl of gumbo $50???? Especially when the protein in it was only chicken. A $50 "small bites"? That doesn't come close to being priced like anything else on the menu. It seemed like a made up price and how do you bring an "off menu" item the customer didn't order for $50??? Without asking first. We think they made the gumbo $50 because he comped one of our glasses of wine because he completely forgot to bring it to her. Never going back.

Yelp
This is my to go to spot for when I need a good glass of wine and a very tasty cheese board. It's a great spot if you want a more quiet intimate date night. The host was very kind

Yelp
This place is the best! Super cozy yet contemporary. Very Instagram vibey. We've been here a few times now and really love it and everyone who works here. Places like this make us excited about Dt walnut creek

Yelp
We were taken care of by Ben, who I highly recommend. The food is excellent. The ambience is perfect and the wind is so delicious. The spot is great for a date night or an evening out with a small group of friends. The ambience offers, classy and chic vibes.

Yelp
New spot in Walnut Creek. Wasn't too hard for us to find street parking. Excellent selection, snacks available, friendly service, and good music. Overall pleasant and cozy vibe.

Yelp
I had such a wonderful time, tasting wine and food and socializing with people. It was a great time. So cozy and friendly. Wine was soooooo good we bought a bottle called Borell Diehl so worth it Wednesday Thur Saturday is the best days to go. Ben gave us such a great experience and the Prices were very worthy it was worth my pocket tip$40 I love this place I surely will be back.

Randall W.

Yelp
Wonderful vibe, tarnished by putting in a big screen TV. It was a go to to escape video. What a shame. You can sit in the back if you want to escape, but the ambiance has taken a step back.
google avatar

Bob N.

Yelp
I stopped by on a Sunday & saw they were serving brunch. Ben is amazing, had a great taco bar setting with some great wines to go with the food. I usually stop in for their monthly 1st Wednesday of the month wine get together but brunch on Sunday was another great reason to stop in. Don't miss out on a great wine selection, small plate food & now Sunday brunch...

Yelp
Nice place for a glass of wine. Decent selection. Good service. Nice ambiance. Only negative is benches are a bit uncomfortable for those of us with a 'little junk in the trunk'. Lol
