Yelp
So, I just wrote a review of my favorite Irish pub I've ever been to and my favorite bar in Phoenix. I've been to my local Irish bar three times since living in Wheaton, and I want to like it more, but it doesn't quite hit the mark for me.
The 3 times I went were:
-My birthday party on Friday, February 9
-A date on Sunday, August 26
-A show last night Wednesday, September 19
February Birthday:
I had considered having my birthday party here, but when I looked, I realized it was awfully small. So, we went for Nava Thai for dinner and then to Limerick afterward. The bartender was nicer to my g/f than me, but whatever. We enjoyed the dart board, and it was pretty good.
Date on Sunday, August 26th:
I suggested the Limerick to a woman I had met at another bar (which I won't name because I have a major issue with them & don't want to give them name recognition after going there in July). One of the positives from that other bar was meeting this girl. We each had a beer & talked for 3 hours. It was an excellent date.
The server was great. He was quick with our drinks. He came around like 5 times asking if we needed anything else. That got slightly annoying.
As for that woman, perhaps, you might remember I mentioned the movie, The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock several reviews ago, which was Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Tempe, AZ. Similar analogy applies with her. On our second date, at the end it was determined that she DIDN'T consider that or the Limerick a date. I was totally blind-sided and angry.
Wednesday, September 19th:
I went for the Misbehaven Maidens show. A couple of us had gotten there early to get a table & eat dinner. Upon looking at the menu, I discovered that the Happy Hour (4-7 PM) drinks were only available at the bar. So, I got a water and then ordered their Wednesday special $16 petite prime rib, mashed potatoes, & veggie of the day.
The person I was with at the table first went to the bar to try to get a drink up there, but gave up since they were a little busy. He ended up paying full-price at the table. A few minutes later, I went up to the bar. And the server asked if I needed anything. I told her that I'm getting the drink at the bar since HH is only at the bar. She said I'll have to check with the manager.
The manager came out saying that the HH was only for bar patrons and said that she could have me switch to the bar. I told her that I'm NOT leaving the table where my friends were. The manager even had the nerve to say that most places the HH is only at the bar. I said that a lot of places the happy hour is anywhere.
That wasn't even the point. Even when the HH was only at the bar at some restaurants/bars, I've never had an issue ANYWHERE where that was the case of ordering food at the table & getting the HH drink at the bar. It was unprecedented for them to denying me a HH drink and a huge disappointment. I told her I'll just drink water. They lost drink business from me and pissed me off, which was a bad business decision on management's part. I would've had a drink (In theory, I might've ordered 10 drinks; they wouldn't have known), but they only got the $16 for the prime rib.
As for the Prime Rib deal, I start with the Veggie of the Day, which was squash, zucchini, & peppers, that was pretty good. I would've wanted a few more of that, but it was tasty. The mashed potatoes were excellent. I had a feeling they would be good because I had heard the Shephard's pie was good there.
The prime rib was sub-par. It was good enough, but it was well below average. It was chewy, and there was quite a bit of fat, most of which I didn't eat. I did not think the $16 Prime Rib was a good value because it was weak.
The server came around with water a couple of times, which was good, because I certainly made a stand to not get a beer.
Conclusions:
Making comparisons with the Dubliner Irish Pub (5-stars) in Phoenix (The review I just wrote before this) with Limerick in Wheaton:
1. Dubliner is huge, and Limerick is very small. They are both well decorated, but Limerick is cramped.
2. Dubliner: I never had an issue with the food, beer, service, etc. or needed to talk to the manager. And Limerick: The manager makes me seem stupid by adding the line about HH only at the bar is commonplace.
I will come back to Limerick at some point. I wouldn't mind trying the Shepherd's Pie. Bars in Wheaton aren't great. It's mostly more like clubs like Unplugged. I just like a neighborhood bar like Limerick. My top choice for bar in Wheaton is Bar Louie by the mall. They don't have the charm of Limerick, but it's specious and nice in there.
