Melbourne’s Best Pubs Are What America Needs Right Now | Eater

"A warmly casual gastropub that hasn’t lost its soul, offering a cracking wine list and reliably executed pub classics like bangers and mash and chicken schnitzel, with staff who pour a perfect pint, trade jokes, and cheer (or jeer) at the cricket." - Lesley Suter

Our food was delicious, the waiter Sam was delightful, engaging and detailed on the specials and assisted us with recommendations. All the waiters were wonderful including the bar staff. A warm atmosphere with the best vibes. We dine out regularly, love our food and can be particular and this place is a winner! Thanks to all the wonderful staff.

We booked a table for Sunday lunch for my MIL birthday day out! Delicious food and super yummy drinks! We did a tour at Melbourne museum so this place was a perfect location for lunch afterwards. Relax and chill restaurant space. We had burrata with toast, baked oysters, sourdough butter, scallops ceviche, veggies croquettes, pumpkin gnocchi, and chicken schnitzel to share between the 4 of us. We also got a couple different craft beers from the tap to try and had some cocktails and wine with our food. Toffee pudding was my favourite dessert out of the three we have, but Matcha cheese cake and chocolate brownie was okay too. I definitely recommend this place for delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere!

Visited on a Wednesday after work as part of Pint of Origin. Loved it! Great food, i had the mussels, delicious and the Milk Stout from Bruny Island was a great companion. Large hotel and was buzzing. We will be returning.

beautiful pub inside and out, located on Cardigan Street in Carlton, plenty of paid street parking outside, Outdoor and Indoor seating available. Relaxing venue. The mulled cider is delicious as was the roast. The duck liver pate was very bland. recommended as a nice place with friends for a beer and simple feed.

Having visited London a few times and fallen in love with its pub culture, I knew I had to check out the local scene in Australia while I was there for my sister’s wedding. One day, with no wedding plans scheduled, we decided to explore. We were staying in St. Kilda and made our way to the Docklands. While wandering around, we stumbled upon The Lincoln pub. We arrived a bit early for dinner, so we grabbed a bench outside, ordered some drinks and snacks, and soaked in the relaxed vibe. Soon, more family joined us, turning it into an impromptu mini-reunion. I was pretty hungry, so I had to try the fish and chips—just to compare them with the ones I’d had in England. And wow, they did not disappoint! Generous portions and perfectly crispy, they definitely held their own. As the workday ended, the place filled up. A group of local women sat next to us and, amused by our American accents, struck up a conversation. What followed was a fun, laughter-filled evening of shared stories, great food, and warm hospitality. It was the perfect Aussie welcome—and a reminder that the best travel memories are often unplanned.

The Lincoln is a great Gastropub, food was excellent, perfectly cooked, medium rare, Kangaroo. Great range of tap beers & stout, as well as a good wine list. Great atmosphere, can watch sport in the Sportsbar or dine quietly in the dining room. Service was also excellent, especially from Owen.

Tasty Sunday Roast. The meat was very tender and well cooked, but the portion was quite small only 2 slices of meat for $34.

Yelp
The best medium rare sirloin stake served with oversized hand cut chips. What more could I want? Maybe a couple of negronis, and they are well catered for too. Excellent, friendly service an truly gastro menu will please the foodie in anyone.

Yelp
I never had Chicken Schnitzel that had the chicken meat still finely moist and not dried to bits when fried! Coleslaw and chips for the win with the pint sized beer of mountain goat IPA! Good mini outdoor area and nice pub! Cool layout and chill place! Got my pub fix on!

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and haven't been all that impressed with the place, particularly due to the poor service that we got when I came here with a whole heap of friends. However being one not to write something off immediately I decided to come back here again, and I have to admit it certainly wasn't one of the better pubs in the area. They had changed a bit (but not much) since I was last here, and there were some nice beers available on tap, however it isn't one that I'm going to be coming back to any time soon.

Yelp
My local is a pub with history, tales to tell and a surprise that never fails to impress my friends when I invite them over for a meal. The bar and it's ever present clientele are typical of most Aussie pubs, busy, noisy and the need to push through the crowd to get to the business end of the bar. It is the walk past the toilets and on through the dining area that the surprises start to creep in. Here you leave the bar-meal district and climb the gastronomic levels that lead to food nirvana. Three levels of service exist here. The counter meal, an area for that quick meal you promised your friend or work related buddy and the 'service and food is everything' dining experience that is truly memorable. We took choice number three. Art Deco minimalist design complements the spacious table arrangements that allow host and guests to partake of food and wine that is carefully offered to complement discerning palettes. Great care has been lavished on the menu and wine list and the choices -our group contained a vegan and diabetic- were all cared for by chefs and waiters dedicated to fulfilling the expectations the decor had set. The evening provided us a gastropub experience without the pretentiousness great food is sometimes drenched in. Your ordered and then got on with what an evening with friends is all about. Great food, wine/boutique beer choices, good company and staff that know their stuff and are proud to show it off. There is no need to go into what the food was or why it all came together so well as this is the real surprise of the evening. Experiencing it is the only way this review will hit its mark. Spoil yourselves. You deserve it.

Yelp
This has got to be the finest corner pub I've been to in Melbourne! Up front you have a traditional pub, nicely restored and packing a good selection of beers on tap. Recently they had Hargreaves Hill Stout and ESB, White Rabbit Dark, Little Creatures Bright and Henner's Cloudy Apple Cider. There's a couple patio tables, but the front room's windows are usually open (when the weather is nice) so the whole place has such a nice open-air feeling. But then, step through to the back of the bar, and the story changes dramatically. You are met with a long white lacquered wall and some dark drapes. Into this room lies a great degustation-style restaurant, with set menus mandatory for your booking (3 course minimum on Friday and Saturday). But we're not talking peanuts, chips and parmas. No No. Start with a charcuterie plate with chorizo, waygu bresalo, cheeses and quince. Then move on to fresh shucked oysters, or Atlantic salmon tartare, or some delicious chickpea falafels for the entrees. Round it out with a nice seared steak of yellowfin tuna, or a roast pork chop, or MY favorite, three week aged steaks. Very hearty portions all around, attentive service, and a nice quiet setting tucked away in a beautiful historic building. Cool juxtaposition to the pub up front, hey?

Yelp
A corner pub with quite a character, my memories of this place concern sunny afternoons and refreshingly cool beer. The space is quite cramped indoors so on most occasions people spew into the outdoor seating, which situated by the road isn't the most amazing of places. It serves it's purpose for all afternoon rendezvous, but has no real character about it. The food is fine dining for a pub, and the prices reflect that. You can get Oysters or a Charcuterie Plate to complement your brew, with a number of bar menu items that include curry and burgers and more (oh my!) Not the worst place I've ever been to, if you're nearby it's definitely worth a shot, but there are far better places to be found in Melbourne.

Yelp
Party of six. Waitress was rude and curt for all our interactions and seemed like she inconvenienced by our presence. One member of the party's food never arrived. We asked several times but the food was not forthcoming, eventually we had to leave as everyone had finished. He asked how long food would be, and if it was under a minute it would be ok. She responded "I've already cancelled it, I'll strike it off the bill" without any apology. Food was below average. Very disappointed.

Yelp
The menu is tough, there is too much good stuff to choose from! I go for the 'Slow cooked goat, green olives, preserved lemon, cous cous, harissa' it is a cold Summers day in Melbourne and this is perfect. Delicious goat falling apart in the herbs and spices. The Morrocan flavours are wonderful and the fresh coriander brings it all to life - totally amazing dish.... read more on my blog

Yelp
Never judge a book by its cover really applies here. The decor suits the location and the place is generally unpretentious. This is a good thing. The service is excellent and the bar meals while a little steep very very tasty. I had the chile on carne, and boy it rocked. I'll be back don't you worry.

Yelp
I studied just down the road here on Cardigan Street, so for all intents and purposes, the Lincoln was my local for a couple of years. I never really got used to the atmosphere in here though, and I largely took my custom to the Curtin around the corner. The Lincoln is a stuffy, renovated pub and it lacks any character it's location may have afforded it in the past. The place smacks of attempting to draw a higher spending patron and that just pisses me off. It's not that beer is necessarily much more expensive here, or that the bar menu holds many surprises, but the black shirted bar staff and their silver tray tip expectancy just remind me of Sydney bar keeps and that is not a good thing. They have a silver service restaurant out the back and admittedly the food is great, though pricey. The bar food is OK also and they sport a pretty good wine list and beer selection. My problem lies in the vibe the staff create here, and it's just not for me. Allan B seems to love it though, so: to each, their own, I guess.

Yelp
Food choices which are categorized as Schooner,Pint etc are confusing to begin with but after our party ordered over $160 food you would expect to be gastronomically satisfied-Sorry not here despite the Lamb Shoulder, Ham and egg croquettes, Spanner Crab corn crackers,Octopus with olive and lemon and Cauliflower with Almond and Chocolate /Beetroot pudding. The food seemed reasonably tasty but after about 8 mouthfuls total of food each you may feel a little bit cheated The waiter wasn't able to advise us that the amount of food ordered wouldnt be enough and had devised a new standard glass of wine -Approx 90-100ml Lygon st offers plenty of choices for people still hungry -you will be! afterwards Matthew D

Yelp
Came here for a Scarf dinner tonight on a coolish Melbourne evening. This was the best of the five Scarf dinners I'd been to previously and my companions agreed. The food, wine and service were all terrific. We loved the Bianca Vigna prosecco, one of the best I've tasted. The Tar and Roses Sangiovese wasalso nicely satisfying. The entrees, mains and sides were all terrific. I had the pork rillette and Lincolnshire pork sausages for mains. I loved them both. They were both thoughtfully composed and were lovely and hearty to eat. My companions reported the same with their entrees and mains. Together with each of the sides, the mains made for immensely satisfying meals. The sides were a revelation in fact. Service here was wonderful. The trainees blended wonderfully with the regulars and did a superb job. This is a nice venue. We were very impressed with the space, the wine, the good and the service. There was an upbeat feel across the space as all was in harmony tonight. On this experience, I would certainly recommend the Lincoln.

Yelp
This is a really lovely pub for hanging out with uni or work friends. It's a good location, nice enough outdoor option and generally excellent food.

Yelp
Was surprised to find this place slow on thursday evening around 1830. was greeted warmly by two asian decent bartenders and immediately decided on the bar menu when i saw the oysters. an excellent vesper martini without the lillet, they used vermouth, and very creamy oysters with green chili remoulade. followed that up with the spinach and riccotta crepes, a big portion. overall this was a cool place near the RMIT and worth a stop for an early cocktail and nibble.

Yelp
Nicely renovated pub with a good selection of beers and reasonable wines. The outside seating is a quality spot for a summer afternoon drink. The food is very high quality and interesting. Haven't quite mastered the triple cooked chips although Heston is a hard man to emulate!
