There are amusement park rides that have a long wait because cars are few and far between. And then there's the Little Mermaid ride which does the opposite - having a continuous stream of cars, one right after the other, meaning that riders can be loading and unloading every couple seconds!
This ride at California Adventure is one of Disney's slow rides. Each car, shaped like a seashell, comfortably seats two riders, though two adults with a kid could probably fit into one car. The ride features music, animatronics, and colorful displays, and it progresses through the story of The Little Mermaid. However, the ride skips over important details of the movie, basically (spoiler alert) all of the conflict in between when Ariel first becomes human and the ending when she marries Eric. Ursula is present, but only as a prop. Hmm...
Not to mention, though the animatronics are generally done well, the look of Ariel feels a bit off. Several other reviewers said the same thing, calling Ariel's face creepy. Seems like there's an "uncanny valley" effect going on here.
So why the 4 stars? Well, when the wife and I came by here, there was no wait at all, unlike all the other rides that day. Most of the cars were empty. And though the story was a bit simplified, the Under the Sea portion was done really well. This part happens in a large room and you have dancing lobsters, spinning starfish, seahorses doing a conga line, and more. You have so much going on and all the ocean animals are partying it up like there's no tomorrow. It's awesome.
So yeah, definitely do this ride if you have 10 minutes to spare and the wait is negligible. If there's a significant wait, then my recommendation is to skip the ride and find a video of it on YouTube.
