Absolutely excellent food as always, with the kitchen maintaining its prestigious high standards, now enhanced by a lovely renovation featuring new leather furnishings and updated lighting.
I visited Shangri-La Singapore during Christmas week, the first hotel of the renowned Asian hotel chain, which opened in 1971 and pioneered the tall, gold-decorated lobby now synonymous with Shangri-La hotels.
The atmosphere was buzzing, with a gigantic real Christmas tree, complemented by genuinely warm service. The staff were courteous, efficient, and unfailingly polite at all times.
Since my last visit a year ago, the lobby has been refreshed with new furniture, lavish leather sofas and lantern-style chandeliers. The space now feels brighter and more inviting, giving it a fresh new feel. The menu remains very reasonably priced.
The food was well done and every dish was generously portioned. I caught myself saying “Wow!” more than once, especially with the chicken curry and the chocolate cake decorated with gold flakes.
Up first was the carrot cake, lighter in colour, refined, tasty, and generously sized.
The chicken curry was simple yet full of flavour, with a right balance of coconut milk and spice. The asam pedas was aromatic and hearty, with a tamarind sourness that paired beautifully with hot rice. To drink I had a soothing chin chow, served with petite sago pearls, and suited to contrast the mildly spicy curry and asam pedas.
Desserts were excellent overall, with the chocolate truffle standing out for its rich, dense chocolate intensity. The mango-lemon tart, also finished with gold flakes, was equally brilliant. I seriously could not put my spoon down.
Shangri-La’s F&B standards remain consistently high and offer excellent value for money. Tranquil and timelessly elegant, it’s a wonderful place to slow down and spend quality time with loved ones.
