11 Best North Carolina Diners | Eater Carolinas

"It’s a good rule of thumb that when there’s not much else around, a local diner will be the heart of a small town’s culinary scene. The Local Joint, located on the outskirts of Asheville in Fairview, is packed daily with regulars who come hungry for breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes. Don’t be fooled by the connecting gas station: the Local Joint’s ambiance is tastefully modern, with all the comfort of a proper Southern diner. The menu is reflective of that, ranging from fluffy biscuits smothered in homemade gravy to vegetarian and gluten-free dishes." - Sara Akhavan

I am NOT a fan of breakfast potatoes, however, the breakfast potatoes(home fries) served here are a completely different experience. They were so delicious. Food quality was great. We ordered the Western Eggs, and The Big Bear. The gravy on the big bear was not what I expected either. It was a creamy, silky texture that was savory. It too was delicious. Will certainly be a place we’d visit again and tell others about.

We ended up here in error and we were so glad that we did! The rueben was excellent (I heard) and my burger with mozzarella was superb with a side fo cheesy grits. Lovely place. Incredibly capable staff (we got Erica).

Google
SO GOOD. I'm only in Asheville for a week, and this is my 3rd day in a row here. Delicious, affordable, down. Great menu, great folks, easy atmosphere. There's only winning here. Enjoy😋

Google
The very first time I crossed their threshold years ago I was surprised and delighted to see what I recall as a seared tuna dish that absolutely rocked my understanding of what it meant to eat at a diner. Soooo good! Since then several iterations of the menu have been made and there seems to be a return to diner roots: (delicious!) burgers made with locally sourced beef, and other tasty meals and sides. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like the elevated dishes of “Brussel Fries with lemon tarragon aioli” or “BBQ spiced salmon with a Lusty Monk-tarragon cream sauce, served with mashed potatoes, and a mix of sauteed green beans, shallots and spinach” at any diner, so I can’t say ‘traditional’ applies. The cakes that often line their counter are always fantastic. Service has always been extremely friendly. I plan to eat there again and again and again.

Google
This place is the go to spot for a diner in Asheville. The menu has a wide variety of breakfast and lunch foods. The eggs Benedict with prosciutto was divine ! The waitress was ext extremely kind and attentive.

Google
In our efforts to support local, yet stay true to dry January, we found The Local Joint near our house. What a true gem! The service was extraordinary, the vibe was really cool, and the food was phenomenally delicious!! My chicken marsala was divine and his shrimp and grits were exceptional! We will definitely be back!!

Google
This place was so good! We got the Reuben and buffalo chicken sandwich. The server was on top of checking on us. You can tell the locals enjoy this place.

Google
My partner and I love this restaurant and eat there often! The staff are so kind and the food is consistent. It is reasonably priced and the portions are generous. They are a lovely local spot and one of our go-tos.

Yelp
HOW WAS TODAY MY FIRST TIME TRYING THIS GEM OF A PLACE?!?! The atmosphere is exactly what the name suggests - a local joint where you get to enjoy DELICIOUS food and drinks. The service was top notch, very friendly staff right from the start. Ridiculously good prices for the portions served. Insanely, and I mean really, good tasting food. I'm running out of adjectives here, but you get the point. A MUST VISIT. LIKE RIGHT NOW. 1000/10.

Yelp
Great classic diner. Surrounded by beautiful forest, a bit off the beaten path. The waitress and cooks were friendly, and I can't stop raving about the food!! I got the fried egg sandwich and both the flavor and the price is to die for. My dad got the biscuits and gravy and he couldn't stop talking about how amazing the gravy is. I would highly recommend stopping by this great local eatery!

Yelp
Dug the modern diner vibe and the emphasis on using local products. Service was ok I guess; the server seemed new, so I'll cut her some slack. Received a free beignet, croissant-like in texture and quite delish. Loved the Huevos Rancheros. The coffee from Dynamite Roasting Company and the Firewalker Chipotle hot sauce were fab, which was no surprise given the talent and careful craft emblematic of both these area artisans.

Yelp
Great food, great service and great staff. It's a great dive diner. Don't miss out on the meatloaf special on Mondays.

Yelp
Delicious grub, friendly folks, comfortable surroundings... what's not to like? I just wish it was open 24 hours a day!

Yelp
We met up with a friend who told us about this place so we went here to eat. Have to say it's a hole in the wall place that you have no clue what they offer. They have a decent sized menu to pick from too. The restaurant is attached to a gas station, set up kinda like a diner inside. To start we had fried green tomatoes. These were really good. Our friend told us everything is locally sourced as much as they can. They used to serve drinks but because they have the store next door they no longer do. I decided on a hamburger with onion straws. I couldn't eat it all. It was a good size burger along with the onions. We ate outside since our friend had his dogs with him so they could be with us. The waitress will come out and wait on you which was nice. The restrooms were shared with the gastation in between the 2 businesses. Over all we really enjoyed eating here and would go back, it's worth stopping here to eat! Great food!

Yelp
exactly what you'd expect - delicious diner food, friendly service, and minimal frills. impressive menu! both the breakfast and lunch is great.

Yelp
Plenty of parking. The name of the restaurant fits, so come here and brunch or lunch and support local businesses! I ordered the veggie eggs benedict and we shared the brussels sprouts appetizer - which was absolutely delish. Both are pictured.

Yelp
Great breakfast place. It's connected to a gas station. Seats inside and out. Great French toast with berries. Friendly service. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
AMAZING local gem. Hits all the criteria: friendly service; delicious food; fair prices; clean. Went twice in three days. Check out the pancakes -- huge, fluffy, tasty. And the local jam!!!

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place and have for years. Set in a inconspicuous gas station in the Fairview location, it has been a local gem for years. You can usually find parking and it's actually pretty close to many parts of Asheville. We arrived on a Saturday morning and we're seated right away. They have a cute diner inspired interior and a patio (nothing special and close to the Highway but nice to have an outdoor option). I got the eggs Benedict and it was amazing. Tons of spinach and the eggs were perfect. Good amount of sauce too. My hash browns were pretty decent but my partner definitely got the last of a batch. All crispies. My partner loved her pancakes but the "seasonal berries" were sad. Like 5 blueberries and one strawberry sad. We watched a strawberry fall on when they placed our food at the pick up window for the server and it was the food version of watching simbas dad fall off the cliff at pride rock. The server was nice but a bit non engaging. For example, when she arrived at our table she just stood there waiting for instruction rather than greeting us and asking what she could get for us. Also waited for water a lot. She was young- maybe a learning curve. Overall would go back. Cute little local joint.

Yelp
Another flawless meal here as always. I like the breakfast all day option, but did the Reuben today and it was very good. Sweet potato fries were perfect, too. Good waitress service & diner atmosphere also. I've never had to ask for a sweet tea refill because they ninja up on me & refill it all the time.

Yelp
Great place for a quick friendly meal. No-nonsense diner decor, fast service, and first rate food. We just had the Friday fish special : battered haddock & fries. It was the best fish 'n chips I've eaten since I left Britain 37 years ago. No kidding.

Amy D.

Yelp
Here for a short getaway, staying in Fairview. Decided to try a local haunt. The service was prompt, attentive, and friendly. I ordered the Fairview burger made with a black bean patty with a side of sweet potato fries. I have tried so many veggie and black bean burgers, and I don't hesitate for a nanosecond when I say this is the best I've ever had. The sweet potato fries were ridiculously good too. Sweet potato fries are hit or miss for me, but these had the perfect crisp and flaky salt to balance out the sweetness of the sweet potato. We took home carrot cake and salted caramel cake. The carrot cake was good, but the salted caramel cake was insane! Will definitely return. Don't skip this restaurant if you're in the area!

Yelp
Would you believe me if I told you that this cute & quaint diner is located next to a gas station?? Stop in for some piping hot coffee and a delicious breakfast entree ranging from fresh items like fluffy pancakes, loaded omelettes, sandwiches, and B&G's! You can also order some lunch items such as a juicy burgers, packed salads, loaded sandwiches, thick wings, tasty quesadillas, and more! This is a fantastic spot to stop at while commuting from Asheville to the mountains & trails. You can sit outside on the patio or inside the diner. Highly recommend checking this spot out!

Yelp
I stumbled on this place while getting my fav Amoco Gas. Shelly, the waitress, mentioned how good their pot roast was and thought I would like it. Boy, was she ever right ! They have a bowl of stew that is "killer" (figuratively speaking). A pulled pork slider is also mouth watering. A shout goes out to another waitress Miss Ginny.

Brian H.

Yelp
Excellent buffalo chicken sandwich. Highly recommend to anyone in the area. Great place in the Fairview area. Quick and easy pickup service.

Ann B.

Yelp
Great breakfast! Recommended by our VRBO host and was definitely worth it! Enjoyed the casual diner feel.

Yelp
This place is a gem! We've lived in the area for 5 years and just got around to trying it and we're so glad that we did. service, atmosphere and food was amazing!

Yelp
We stopped in while on a little road trip and the food was phenomenal! I had the Shrimp -n- Grits (Cajun shrimp, pimento cheese grits, poached eggs & fried green tomatoes. WOW. It was one of the best breakfast items I've ever had. My Sister had the Southern Benny (biscuit topped w/ pimento cheese, fried green tomato, bacon and eggs w/ hollandaise) and She raved!! The complimentary beignets--nice touch. I'll give the service thumbs up because we didn't want for anything but the server did have the personality of a fencepost. Great, great meal!!

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Served a burger tonight that still had the plastic wrapper stuffed in part of it. then the cook got sassy like I was wrong to be grossed out. Perhaps he was drinking too much of the beer they've started serving again.

Horace B.

Yelp
The food here is off and on. Sometimes very good and sometimes mediocre. Depends on the chef on duty. Twice had stomach upset after breakfast here. No more for me I'm afraid.

Yelp
I've driven past the Local Joint a hundred times and have always been curious. I finally gave it a try last weekend and the experience was mostly good. Quick overview-My tempeh melt and sweet potato fries were excellent and I love the decor/vibe. My friends were both disappointed with their food and it took a reallllly long time to come out. Detailed review- My husband has been telling me about their "amazing" fried chicken sandwich for years now and I've driven past The Local Joint many, many times on my way to go hiking and such. I have never gone in because I don't eat chicken (pescatarian) and just never ended up stopping in. My friend suggested going here for her birthday dinner last Saturday and I excitedly agreed! We met there at 5:30pm and as imagined with it being so early, the restaurant was pretty empty with a few people sitting at the bar and two other tables of guests. When we were seated, I ordered a water with no ice and a coffee and my friends ordered hot tea and cola. My water definitely came with ice (this happens 90% of the time though, so weird). When I asked the server about some items on the menu that I was confused with, she was cold and not helpful. It actually felt like she was annoyed that I was asking questions. I ended up ordering the tempeh melt, my husband the coconut shrimp and brussel sprout confetti and my friend the fish tacos. Luckily, my friends and I love talking and hanging out (and were in no rush) because it took forever for the food to come out. The server never checked in to let us know that it was taking a while or to apologize for the wait. Once the food finally came out, I was super duper happy with my tempeh melt and the sweet potato fries. Every bite was A+ and I would go back today and order it again if it weren't out of my way. So yummy! Plus, it's a large sandwich so I had enough to take home for lunch the next day. My friends were quite disappointed with their meals though. As mentioned in the quick overview, I love the decor and vibe of Local Joint. It feels like a retro cafe and has really cool sliding curtains that can be moved around for more/less sun. I'll definitely come back some time and try some drinks too!

Michael K.

Yelp
I will be bringing this up to health department tomorrow but every single salt shaker has bugs in it. I don't know how it's not noticed but that's disgusting. We did not eat our food any of it as I no longer had any thoughts of the food being "safe" to eat. Please Local Joint check your salt shakers and clean and empty them.

Yelp
I was expecting cheap diner food from the price rating/photos online, but I was so pleasantly surprised! We came in for breakfast and the menu offered plenty of healthy vegetarian-friendly options with fresh ingredients. I ordered the an omelet with home fries and my girlfriend ordered an egg & cheese biscuit and a chocolate chip pancake. All were delicious -- my omelet was a little lacking on the goat cheese which made it kind of dry, but our waitress happily brought me more which fixed it right up. Our waitress was Alicia and she was great! She was super friendly and attentive, super on top of refills and even offered us to-go coffee and water for the road. Thank you Alicia! The only thing I'll say is that the dish-ware wasn't super clean; both my knife and my coffee spoon were dirty. Overall, we had a great experience here, and I would definitely recommend supporting The Local Joint!

Kirsten G.

Yelp
This was such a find! We were a little concerned when we saw it was attached to a gas station, but when saw how busy it was, we decided to go for it. And man, we are so glad we did! All four of us had awesome food and all the staff were very friendly.!

Yelp
Had a delicious reuben with house made corned beef and chips. Think they also make their own pickles. Also recommend the burgers, fries, shrimp and grits and fish fry special (when available). Nice atmosphere, friendly service, seating at the counter like a diner and plenty of booths. Local beers an tap and sometimes they have delicious chocolate and carrot cakes as well w/ generous servings.

Yelp
Great food! Bartenders were amazing! Went for New years. Great place! Next time you are in Boone, check this place out!

Yelp
This was close by to our Airbnb so our group opted for The Local Joint on our first night. Not a bad choice but mostly average. We had a burger, fries and a craft beer. Nothing special but all fine. The venue/ambiance was a little strange as you thought you were eating at a gas station. Lol. I'm not complaining tho as it served its purpose.
google avatar

Richard E.

Yelp
Our go-to local place for my wife and me. Excellent food and service. It's next to a gas station so it can be dismissed, but definitely worth it.
google avatar

Esther S.

Yelp
As a local I really enjoy coming here, wonderful service and great food! I highly recommend the big bear!

OldUnshavenOne O.

Yelp
Food is good, atmosphere OK but now they've started nickel-and-diming customers with an added charge not on the check when one uses a credit card. Better to just raise prices instead of sneaky fees like this, and who doesn't use a credit card nowadays?

Karen K.

Yelp
Ate here for the first time and it was fairly good. The fries were a little on the cold side and tasted like they probably had been fixed for some time and kept under a warmer. A little limp. We both had sandwiches which we shared. Both were good but nothing that stands out. I am anxious to go back and try their breakfast menu at another time.
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Food was Amazing, and service was great. The breakfast sandwich was great. The diner ambience is also fantastic.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I did not want to give them a bad review publicly but as their website will not accept messages, here we go. I do think they/you should know about our experience Saturday Dec 9 as we live in Fairview and eat with you often. It was right after 1 pm and we ordered a Reuben and Juevos Rancheros. Our observations...the floors were greasy, so much so that we were afraid of slipping on them; the counters were dirty and we had to ask to have our area cleaned as that was space to eat. We have always gotten good food here, but not today. My avocado I paid extra for came in three tiny slices that were not green and hard as a rock (I should have taken a pic). The eggs I requested hard were runny and the sweet potato fries were undercooked. They were cold and "raw" inside. There were plenty of staff but things seemed to be chaotic. As we were finishing our meal, the oven fan died and they closed the kitchen. We are not complainers so we ate the meal and left, but neither of us was happy and we are hesitant to go back. Just wanted you know our experience. Maybe it was an off day, but we paid the price. Lol. Sent from my iPad

Yelp
Really great find thanks to Yelp! We went a teensy bit out of our way but we're wowed by this place! Looks like an old Waffle House/Huddle House but it's got some really great culinary genius going on here! My eggs Benedict was superb and my hubbys egg scramble was devoured and raved over. Loved that they served local jams and jellies and had great coffee! Will keep it in mind if we come to Asheville area again!

Steven P.

Yelp
excellent Cuban Sandwich, but all of their food is pretty good. Best place to eat within 3 or 4 miles

April M.

Yelp
The local joint is an awesome quaint spot said in the mountains in Fairview North Carolina the food is very good... it's pretty affordable as well!

Yelp
Great spot to fuel up and looking for a great meal, as my friends and I were finishing a bachelor party weekend, we went in to grub. The look and feel of a roadside diner, charming waitresses filled with personality and smiles. Great menu selection with all the classics. I got Eggs Benedict and Grits, was filling, neatly prepared, good coffee and a full tank!

Kimberly D.

Yelp
Great food choices at reasonable prices. We have enjoyed all the various menu items and they are very good!

Rhonda S.

Yelp
We loved this local gathering spot! It had great food and great service! We stumbled upon it but we definitely will go back when we are in town!!

Grant B.

Yelp
Ordered the local burger medium, it was red as an nc state fan... also was supposed to come with bacon and blue cheese and I could taste a small hint of it but could not see it at all except the top of the burger looks a little dark and weird. I don't know if they put it into a paste or something, but there was definently no crunch of bacon and barely any flavor of it. When I called in to order they asked me if I wanted it fries chips or sweet potato fries and I chose fries. Show up to find out it was an up charge... no mention of that. The way they asked it made me think it was included but my order on the menu was 28 and after tax and fries came out to 38 so yah... the fries weren't even that good. For $18 shrimp and grits they went pretty skimpy on the sausage. It was pretty good and the fries green tomatoes were a nice touch but definently over priced. Overall seems like they have potential if they learn how to cook a burger and don't try and trick me into upcharges...

Yelp
I have to say, I love this place! I'm sitting in here for probably the 7th or 8th time and I'm just realizing that I should leave this place a 5 star review! It is literally the only place outside of Latin America where I can get amazing fresh juices. Sooo good that I sometimes order two. Never disappoints. The staff is friendly, the vibes are good, and the food is yummy and satisfying. I try not to order it but the biscuits and gravy is amazing.

Yelp
You might drive right by this place, but whip a quick U-Turn and pop into this delicious local breakfast & lunch spot! We were craving something light but filling, and The Local Joint was perfect for a lazy Thursday. Came here with my S/O, he ordered the Cuban sandwich - flavorful and crispy. I ordered the Fried Green Tomato BLT, wonderful on the tastebuds but very messy in the hands! For dessert we had to try a slice of their cakes after seeing them when we walked in. This carrot cake is light and perfect after a savory lunch. Totally recommend this local hole in the wall on I-74 !

Yelp
My wife and I waited 30 min for nachos and it got to the point to where we asked for them to go. There were 2 other tables in the restaurant. We got the nachos and it was a little bit of cold chicken and unmelted cheese jalapeños and a dab of sour cream. Definitely wasn't enough food for even 1 person. Will not be back
google avatar

Yelp
This is a place you don't want to pass by. The Local Joint is a perfectly named dinner attached to a gas station where they source local ingredients, served up in all your favorite cuisine styles deliciously. If you have ever been worried about eating at a place adjacent to a gas station his place will change your mind right away. From the goat cheese local favorite omelette, to the to die for shrimp and grits and my all time favorite there, the home made potato chips smothered in crumbles of blue chews and a generous portion of blue cheese melty sauce. It's everything you want from a traditional diner with the open kitchen, counter seating, and comfy booths plus a modern twist, better food, and beer and wine also. Who doesn't love a mimosa with their brunch. The service is great and the staff will always make sure you're satisfied. The past time we went we had Natalie as our server and she was amazing. There is nothing quite like this place around here. Their Cuban, Cajun, down-home style will keep you coming back for more again and again. And you can blame me if you get addicted to the blue cheese chips because I know I did.

Kathryn C.

Yelp
We stayed in Fairview for a week on vacation and stumbled upon this place by accident. Yes, the curb appeal is not the greatest, but the food was DELICIOUS! Generous portion sizes, and we all agreed they served the best French Toast we had ever tasted. The waitress was excellent as well. Wish we would have had time to go back a time. If you are ever in the area, it is worth the stop.
google avatar

Kelsey J.

Yelp
We love it here! We live close by and just recently discovered this gem. We were wanting a good breakfast on a Sunday so we stopped here, so glad that we did! It was packed around 9:30 and we did have to wait a while but it was worth it. Also they were handing out complimentary beignets that were to die for so that helped the wait. We've been back for lunch which was also delicious. Best Turkey burger I've ever had. I just feel like the food made here is cared about and unique and I'm all for that. This is the kind of place you want everyone to know how good it is but also want to keep it a secret for yourself. Ha!

Yelp
Went between breakfast and lunch, no one else in the patio area. Asked for a cheese omelet (not on the menu) and the server seemed happy to comply. She brought out an odd-looking omelet, white with yellow flecks (cheddar). Its taste, texture, and appearance were not like any omelet I've had in my life. I told the server it seemed to be made solely of egg whites, which I certainly did not request. She said it was made of whole eggs. No way. Was this simply ignorance or did the cook make a mistake and no one would own up to it? My husband ate half--I couldn't eat my half--and the only reason for the second star is because he liked the homefries. (I didn't: they tasted like they were cooked in burnt, over-used oil.) Big disappointment . . . a shame, because the place is close to my doctor's office and I would have come back time and again.
