The Best Irish Bars for St. Patrick’s Day in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Stop in for corned beef and cabbage at the Local. The downtown location is known for its ornate mahogany woodwork and antique-cut glass lighting, while over in St. Louis Park, the Local’s suburban sister restaurant, with its curved bar and frosted glass panes, maintains that old-world Irish feel. Either is a great place to watch rugby matches on a Saturday morning — the Local offers $5 drinks and a limited breakfast menu." - Eater Staff

Google
Elevated bar bites and delicious filling mains! I got the corned beef and WOW! so much food, definitely shareable, and so so savory. The walleye was fresh and well fried, in a light buttery batter. Perfectly poured Guinness’ real made the meal!

Google
Nice quite place to stop in for a drink. A friend and I were just walking around and came across this spot and decided to stop in. Glad we did! We had some delicious desserts and drinks. Sat right up at the bar and the bar tender was friendly and attentive

Google
I really wanted to enjoy my experience here. At least I could say I gave this spot a try. Minus the service, I would give the atmosphere and food 4.5 stars. Ordered (and pictured here) their Cheese Curds - dipping sauce tasted like yummy nacho cheese; Fish (Cod) and Chips - breading on the cod was excellent. The person who brought out my food chuckled like I made a mistake with ordering the Cod, though; and Steak Frites which was ok.

Google
Literally my favorite bar ever. Fantastic food. I had the Poutine, and my wife had the Walleye Fish & Chips. Both were flavorful, served hot, and reasonably priced. The service was stellar, with a friendly staff amplifying what is probably the most beautiful ambience of any bar this side of the pond. We will be back, and we're looking forward to exploring more of the menu options.

Google
Very cool restaurant! The service was amazing , they squeezed us in before a reservation too. We loved the food, really happy with our dinners. Whiskey chicken bites were tasty, the salmon was cooked perfectly, even with a crispy outside, and the pot pie too!

Google
Incredible food, the portions are big, and everything is good quality and fresh. We spent about $30-$40 a person with drink and food. Our server was very sweet and the staff were very accommodating. I definitely recommend the fish and chips, it truly was one of the best I've ever had. The vibe of the restaurant is also so cool, whoever did the interior design A+ for you.

Google
The Local Irish Pub in downtown is a fantastic spot! Bartender Steve is excellent, super friendly and attentive. I absolutely loved the Ginger Locks cocktail; it’s perfectly balanced and delicious. The Irish Poutine is so good, comfort food at its best, and the Garlic Whiskey Bites are a must try! Great atmosphere and an all-around enjoyable experience.

Google
Cannot say enough good things about this. We had our group of 40 gymnasts and parents for a sit down dinner in one of their private rooms. Servers were very attentive and friendly. Megan, at the hostess stand, was so kind when I called to confirm our reservation and let her know we were running a little late. Food was delicious. Shepherd's pie, the walleye, and especially the pretzel, was awesome. Don't miss this place. They're great.

Yelp
Here the atmosphere, drinks and staff are great. The food is hit it miss. Tonight our fish meals were amazing! See photos, but I'd love to get the Whiskey-Glazed Norwegian Salmon the next time I go back! The sauce was flavorful, the fish had a sweet and crispy outside wth a flakes inside. My partner had the cod fish & chips, which was also delicious. I would strongly avoid the cheese curds- no good! They have a big drink menu, but you must get whiskey while here. The bar is a beautiful display of all the options. Behind the bar is a party room. Kids do well here because it's already pretty loud and they have an entire kids menu. Patio is inclosed and warmed by heaters as needed. Lastly, come for the game, there are plenty of tvs to watch any and all of the games!

Yelp
Typical irish pub but not sure how they stay in business since it was empty on a friday night. Service was friendly and beer was cold. Don't expect any fancy cocktails or a wide range of tequila selection. Come here for the straightforward approach and no fuss environment.

Yelp
Stopped for dinner on our way to a show at the armory and this is a must try in the area. The Local is a fantastic Irish pub with a welcoming atmosphere and a menu full of delicious options. The food is flavorful and hearty, with classic Irish dishes and some creative twists that keep you coming back for more. I ordered their chicken sandwich which was delicious and had a different but great tang to it. The mashed potatoes are a must as they were fresh and the gravy was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the steak frites. His fries were deliciously crisp I stole a few and the steak was cooked a perfect medium. What sets The Local apart is its impressive selection of non-alcoholic drinks. I ordered their gin and no-tonic which was a delicious ginger mocktail! Whether you're taking a break from alcohol or just prefer a good mocktail, they've got plenty of tasty choices to enjoy. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is that it can get quite busy, especially during peak hours, which it seems the hostess stand is left unattended for some time. We waited a bit for someone to return to the front. As the restaurant itself is very large. However, the staff is always friendly and accommodating, making the overall experience well worth it. Our server was absolutely phenomenal and she was fantastic and I feel horrible I don't remember her name! Highly recommend stopping by for a bite or drink!

Yelp
First off, this place looks amazing inside! Very large, spacious, clean, and fancy looking. We were greeted right away, drinks came quickly, and our bartender/server was on it. Obviously, it's downtown, so parking is a little tough, but that's Minneapolis. Drinks tasted good and our good was FIRE!!!! My bangers and mash was super good and my girl loved her salmon dish. Loved that they were playing the NFL playoff games fyi. Definitely returning. - Anthony

Yelp
We popped in here for a quick lunch before our flights back home. Loved the Irish pub feel it had to it. They had an awesome $14.99 lunch menu that had their best sellers but at a smaller portion at a lower price. The food was absolutely amazing and just light enough for lunch. We all ordered the fish and chips and were all talking about it afterwards. Great spot for lunch, but I'd love to come back for dinner.

Yelp
Great location in the heart of Minneapolis. Ample seating both for tables and at the bar. As a true Irish bar, their beer selection is quite large. With TVs everywhere it's the perfect place to catch your favorite sporting event. Started with a braised beef poutine which was rather generous and tasty, and for the main a very indulgent Shepherds Pie that is big enough to split. Come for the beer and sports, stay for the pub food!

Yelp
We were a party of 12. All of us who had the salmon got sick (3 of us). the grain bowl tasted great and fresh otherwise. The appetizers were fine. We also made a reservation for 12 and they tried to seat us in the weirdest bar stool seat and we refused, asked to be seated outside and they begrudgingly accommodated. The whole experience was annoying. Our waiter was also a sourpuss - I'm not asking for a smile, but man, that type of bad vibe transfers. We were also asked to leave after 90 mins- that was fine since we did know about this but I didn't know anyone enforces it after Covid. Whatever. I was disappointed and won't be back.

Yelp
Great purist Abe for downtown. Huge space. The bartender said she poured an amazing pinto of guineas and she was not lying. Perfect pour. The lines were clean and the glass was too. Def a place to enjoy a great pint of Guinness

Yelp
Great food and amazing architecture...what more could you ask for? Went here right before seeing Orville Peck and it was a lovely assortment of libations and food. Our server was very knowledgeable and gave us good insight on any questions we had. I would love to come here again and just gawk at the architecture. It was quite splendid. Cheers!

Yelp
Great pub! Got a burger with smoked blue cheese, bacon, and some type of aïoli that was really good. We went to Britt's the night before and I thought my burger was better here. Def recommend

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor patio space! We went for an after work cocktail and snack and really enjoyed our time sitting outside. Our waitress was incredibly kind and service went well. We both had one of their speciality cocktails (both $14, a little on the high end for a cocktail without a lot of creativity but we're in a busy part of town so it makes sense). The old fashioned I have (the Cara) was good! We also shared their artichoke dip which was surprisingly amazing, we will definitely be returning to try more food items!

Yelp
Comfortable space with lots Of wait staff that share duties. Anthony Bourdain room, Sagamore lounge, the old Curious Ouster opens later in the evening. Been here a number of times. Experience has varied. Kitchen wasn't open til 4 pm. Alcohol only before that. Ordered food at 4. Tuna appetizer came, the rest of the food didn't. Others around us were served. And the waitress thought we had been served also, but we weren't. No plates. See. Manager came out and offered to take the food we ordered and didn't receive off the check since we didn't have the time to wait (it had been over an hour). Corn bread was complementary and nicely flaky.
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
We grabbed a quick bite and a drink in the outdoor space, right on the Mall. The interior is a pretty fabulous approximation of an English pub, so if the weather didn't cooperate, I'd be just as happy inside. And hey, I'm the the Great Lakes, so fried cheese curds it is! Crunchy, hot, and gooey- what's not to like? The mushroom flatbread was a bit of an outside choice for me, but after trying it, I would definitely steer you to this.

Yelp
Great food and service at the Local off of Nicollet in downtown Minneapolis. We stopped in for dinner before seeing a show at the Orpheum (Sunday evening) and it was not busy. We were sat right away and had a very attentive server. Very cute and authentic pub atmosphere. I ordered the local burger (topped with corned beef, cheddar, onions) and split a bottle of wine with a friend. If you plan to have more than 1 drink the bottle is definitely the way to go in terms of the price! ($10 for one glass vs $32 for the entire bottle...)
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so glad I know someone who works here! If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have found this amazing place! Situated downtown Minneapolis around Target headquarters and other conference centers, they get lots of big parties! Room for all! I was able to get a small table near the back and enjoyed a few drinks, an app, and 2 amazing entrées! Our server (my friend) was obviously great, but the other staff around us were just as friendly and excited to serve us! Great food, drinks, and atmosphere

Yelp
Came with a large group for dinner, all separate checks, and they had great customer service. The waitress was friendly and really attentive coming to check on us. One of the stars was strictly for service. They were great. The food was ok. Three stars for the food. The Shepherd's Pie was exactly what you'd expect. No fuss, and pretty good taste. I wouldn't order it again but I did finish my plate. Had some friends try the pot pie and the flatbread. The flatbread seemed to have the best review. Good choice in the area where everything closes early on Mondays. Good solid option especially for a big group. Not great but definitely not bad.
google avatar

R S.

Yelp
Sadly unimpressed. Simple enough, just needed to put in a takeout order. How much could you mess up a lamb burger, right? It seemed as though they fried it and it was more than well done. It was dry and relatively tasteless and the pesto tasted like it was a year old. The french fries could've been made this morning. They were as cold as could be. Will never go back. So disappointed.

Yelp
We came to The Local a couple of times while visiting Minneapolis. The place is great with a true Irish Pub vibe and great decor. There are lots of cool seating areas to chat more privately as well as an awesome event space. The food is solid. A little over priced to me, but tasty. The drinks are similarly good with lots of interesting options and a descent beer list. The service was hit or miss of us. The first time we came in it was great - attentive and quick. The second was just the opposite. After ordering drinks and waiting for nearly 15 minutes, we had to get up and find the server who apparently forgot to place the drink order. And no, they were not that busy. Okay, shit happens. It still not a good look. But, many more pluses than minuses so go check it out!
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
The ambiance and cool layout of the restaurant/bar is what saved this from being a one star review. It's worth a pop in to see and have a cocktail. Food was meh: pub pretzels were good, but dipping sauces were gross. The artichoke dip was weird, chunky, almost curdled texture, and unappetizing flavor. Not sure what they were going for w that dish... Waitress was inattentive, which was weird, since we were the only table in the place when we arrived. She didn't check in w us until we were ready to leave. Underwhelming and wouldn't recommend.

jared w.

Yelp
Super friendly service and great food, love going there for lunch. Beautiful building!
google avatar

Whitney V.

Yelp
The bar goes all the way around but there are plenty of tables. We were a big group of 14 people so we had to use many tables but were all sat in the same area. The waitress was very patient with us and the food didn't take very long to come out once ordered. There was a nice selection of beer and it wasn't too loud being a bar. I think overall the food was good for a bar but the space around was a little close for everyone since it is long and narrow.
google avatar

Raj S.

Yelp
Had lunch fish & chips and a Guinness. Food was great, nice ambiance outside in a sunny day, great Irish tunes playing. Server was friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Needed something to eat nearby the orchestra hall. We tried the Local since my husband is a big U2 fan. Great food and service! Enjoyed the background music.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
Overall experience was cool because the food was really good and the menu was great. However, the server was bot great. Waited a lot and a bit of an attitude about everything. Over I would come back bc the food did not disappoint so it is what it is. Ambiance... typical pub cute and cozy.
google avatar

Yelp
I was not expecting to have one of my favorite chicken sandwiches at an Irish pub in Minneapolis but I did. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and was hoping it was trenched in Buffalo sauce but instead it was just a well organized and created sandwich with great slaw and aioli. Highly recommend the Local for any large gathering or if you are planning on eating great food

Karen C.

Yelp
The 'Hosteas' Kaitlin was from the walk dead. Nothing Irish about her or for the fact the establishment. I think she gritted her teeth when speaking to me and watching her interactions with other customer. She seemed destained and disgusted by our very presence. Never checked back and seemed mad as hell. Nothing Irish about her or the damn menu. She never came back so what would she know. I had the ' pub curry' that was a laugh: I asked for more sauce ten after I got it, 15 mins later when my dinner it showed up. Definitely not a ff Irish pub. Go somewhere else. Like damn McDonald's.
google avatar

Katarina F.

Yelp
I stopped by The Local on a busy night (there was a convention in town), but we were able to get a table on the patio quickly. The service was friendly and quick. When we ordered, it was apparent they were out of quite a few items, especially on the cocktail list. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie, which was hot and tasty (although a little heavy on the peas). The side salad was undressed and a little bland--it felt more like it was there as a garnish than a side. Overall, I would say the food was a 3.5 and the service was a 5 :)
google avatar

Amanda I.

Yelp
We came with a large group (30+) that they put up in an entertaining room. It was a great space for all of the people. They had one servicer for all of us so we didn't get a lot of attention in terms of refills or follow up on requests. Our party had pretty much everything on the menu. It's typical pub/grill food. Rueben - stacked full of meat and covered with crunchy fries. Fish and Chips - huge fried piece of cod most of which is the fresh batter but decent. This was the most ordered thing in our group. Mac and Cheese - nothing too special Hamburger - good size patty - double patty with special sauce (kind of like Big Mac sauce) Cob salad - this bad boy comes with a deep fried egg on top and is huge!!
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
What a wonderful Irish pub!! Tons of seating with lots of privacy. The service was excellent as well, very attentive to our needs. We came in for a quick bite, some fish and chips and a brew. The fish and chips were phenomenal!!! Perfectly breaded and the fries were perfectly crispy, not soggy at all. I'll definitely be back for these fish and chips again. The cheese cake came with a special Irish whipped cream, I could eat that stuff allllllll day!
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
Service - Fast, courteous. Food - We came for lunch. Our order was placed and we waited about 10-15 minutes max before our food came out. - Reuben and fries were good. - Chess curds were very crispy and the sauce that came with it had a very subtle spice to it - Bangers and mash: my husband thought it was amazing and cooked that day instead of being reheated. - Beers: good selection. My husband enjoyed the red ale and I enjoyed a blue moon. Ambiance - Classic English pub feel - there are little enclosed eating areas for a more personal feel and enclosed feel for larger parties Overall good spot. Would come again

Yelp
We had reservations before a show on Saturday. Terrible service. Server could not take an accurate drink order. Appetizer was undercooked, and we had to find our own plates and silverware. Food was mediocre.

Karen S.

Yelp
The ambience is great and the service was good. The food ... bland and overpriced. Won't eat here again, but might consider a drink.

Angie H.

Yelp
AMAZING STAFF!! I went to the local tonight after a very long 12 hour shift at the hospital, craving a hot meal on my way home, so I sat myself at the bar. Almost immediately, some creepy guy from down the bar came and sat next to me and started talking to me. I tried to be polite but not too encouraging. He didn't take the hint. But the bar tender (I think his name was Steve?) did. Within minutes there were two other staff engaging this guy and his friend in conversation, diverting their attention away from me, allowing me to eat my meal in peace. Bits of the conversation I overheard from a particular staff member included things such as, "she's not reciprocating, give her space." And, "Let her enjoy her meal in peace." While at the same time changing the subject to other things that did not include me, allowing me to finish my meal, and slip off without being bothered again. I am so grateful to that bar tender and the other staff members. I felt extremely safe and looked out for, and the fish and chips were just what the doctor ordered! Thank you, Local Staff! Shout out to Steve(?!)

Thomas H.

Yelp
Not that great but okay. Gave us a bad seat. We just moved to another table. They were fine with it. Kept of getting whiffs of dishwasher water smell. Good was nothing to write home about

Carrie R.

Yelp
Restaurant is lovely. Staff is average. Food was cold, awful and nothing like the description on the menu. Portions were small. When one of us didn't eat the food (so gross) they still charged us the whole amount.
google avatar

Zain K.

Yelp
Not having had pub curry in a very long time and having heard that the one they serve here is particularly good, I stopped by for an early dinner. The curry ended up being very satisfying, but maybe a little on the heavy side (possibly made with heavy cream?). No complaints, but not something I'd want to eat often. The outdoor seating was particularly pleasant on a warm summer evening and the service was very friendly. I'll try the fish and chips next time.
google avatar

Fred B.

Yelp
Friendly staff, good beer, and the pub curry was tasty. The pretzel was chewy and had just enough salt.
google avatar

Kerry M.

Yelp
Setting foot in the Local is a journey through time and space to old century Ireland. The ornate mahogany woodwork and antique-cut glass are both cozy and grand. The friendliness, wit, and hospitality of the staff are tangible. As is required of any authentic Irish pub, the drink menu is magical. Hands down the best happy hour downtown. Bartenders deliver pure, velvety perfection with every pint of Guinness. If you're hesitant to commit to a stout but are in the mood for beer, try the the Black and Tan. Bourbon, whiskey, or gin lovers will be pleased by the cocktail options. Honey, caramel, cocoa, coconut & ginger are among the notes of a single bourbon. I love the Big Ginger and Cucumber Collins. Red Locks is sweeter and smoother than other whiskeys. The mocktails are pretty good too. The food menu is filled with wholesome comfort dishes comprised of fresh ingredients. It's a wider variety than a typical pub. Must-try appetizers include the whiskey-honey glazed chicken shots, potato leek soup, and pretzel bites. Pretzel dip is made with real Irish cheese. Juicy tender cod and crispy fries make up the fish & chips. Solid reuben, burger, and salad options. Vegan-friendly quinoa salad and chickpea curry dishes are delish. Dessert favs are the Guinness Mousse and Irish Cream Cheesecake. Brunch menu requires a hearty appetite. The corned beef hash was spot on. Irish cheddar in the garden veggie omelet was memorably delicious. I've been here at least a dozen times and had consistently great craic.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Was always a fan. We went there today as we are headed to Ireland tomorrow. Sat at the bar, expected a welcome like before. Opposite experience. All the bartenders walked by us several times without making eye contact. Finally 1 of them threw 2 drink menus our way and didn't return. We changed our plan about eating there, had a beer each and ate elsewhere. I really thought one of the bartenders was a bar back as she totally avoided another patron next to us and continued to clean as she walked by him repeatedly. Won't be back.
google avatar

Roderick H.

Yelp
I've been here years ago and had a blast. We are going to Dublin tomorrow saw wanted a fun kick off. Boy were we disappointed. We sat at the bar and 3 bartenders ignored us while they were talking to each other. They literally walked by us several times with no greeting. We finally ordered a beer and decided to leave. Another guy sat down the bar from us and the same thing happened to him. Sad.

Heather E.

Yelp
The bar/ restaurant doesn't provide information on their menu if the item is gluten-free, gluten-free available, or vegetarian. I asked if there was a menu of gluten free options and the server said no, but there were things on the menu that could be made gluten free. I shouldn't have to listen to a list and have to make a decision. Print a menu. It's common all across the UK and Europe to have a separate menu for GF. It's ridiculous how nonchalant restaurants are to their customer's dietary needs. In Scotland and Ireland the server is required by law to ask a customer if they have any dietary concerns or allergies that the kitchen should be aware of. Just because it isn't required to do so in the U.S. doesn't mean you can't and shouldn't mean you won't. I won't return to this establishment.

Erika B.

Yelp
I'd never had brunch here, though been to both locations for over 10 years between the two. The corned beef was perfect. They initially forgot the hollandaise, which I wanted on the side anyways, so not a big deal. Portion is good size. Great freshness. Attentive server, despite training a new one also. Limited selection, but a great pick I would recommend.
google avatar

Hunter K.

Yelp
Came with friends for bar trivia. The trivia room was full so we had to sit outside of it but still had a great time! I had the chicken shots, the sweet glaze was phenomenal. Our waiter was great, and we were even checked in on by the manager/potentially the owner. I'll be back!

Shawn M.

Yelp
Solid fish and chips, I had a side salad instead. Ok beer selection known for being known for whiskey.
google avatar

Anastasiya K.

Yelp
Whether it is getting a draft of Guinness or a Sheppards pie, this Irish restaurant has it all. The ambiance is dark and perfect for the next date night. This place is great!

Kay S.

Yelp
I used to go here all the time. The food was expensive for an Irish pub, but the quality was good. I recently went there for brunch and it was meh. The ambiance and service was great. It's an appetizers and drinks sorta place. We aren't going back for brunch.
google avatar

Art V.

Yelp
Food was good despite a few minor issues - I like marinara with my calamari and I like steak sauce with my steaks.
google avatar

Leo A.

Yelp
#ShoutOut #TheLocal hosting Christmas Day lunch. While most places are closed Christmas Day (rightfully so), staff like Stave (volunteer - his wife works at the Local), Bobby (bartender) , their families are working Christmas Day to serve meals.

Christopher G.

Yelp
Dodd was very good. Atmosphere was entertaining. Service was very accurate and speedy.
