The 2024 Eater New York Holiday Gift Guide - Eater NY

"Part of giving a good gift is surprising someone with something they didn’t know they needed. Cannoli Bars produces a candy bar that has an old-school feel but was invented back in 2021 by a family that’s been in the cannoli business for decades. West Village shop owner Caroline Weaver of the Locavore Variety Store says one of her favorite gifts lately has been introducing friends to the kitschy, little-known candy — wrapping a couple of the bars in a stack to give. We agree. Find them in person at her West Village shop or online and in person at Economy Candy." - Emma Orlow

The loveliest little gift shop! NYC and all cities need a store like this...in a world where "convenience" reigns supreme, this store serves as a reminder that when you shop in person, especially at a place where each item is so thoughtfully sourced, you have a better connection with your product, the place it originated from, and thus more people. A really great variety, and I'm sure there's something for everyone. Please come visit and support! I bought the pack of postcards, but the ingredients there are what I would come for next.

Finally made the trek to NYC from NJ to visit just before the shop’s first birthday. It’s as amazing in person as it appears online. Lots of local goodies being highlighted that could easily be skimmed over or missed in a larger marketplace. Caroline & team do a great job highlighting the little makers that make the retail world so special! Can’t wait to visit again!

The rare gift shop that has quirky, cool, rare and also basic local items for everyone that you might ever need to get a gift for. Prices range widely so you have lots of options. I bought a giant tin of peanuts that I am still snacking on months later! Super friendly staff and I love the membership program. Everything is carefully hand selected so you know it’s going to be great quality. Genuinely grateful that this store exists and supports other local businesses!

A brilliant new shop that only sells products made within 100 miles of New York City. Shop local businesses, and support local businesses. Caroline has done an amazing job creating this beautiful, magical space, which is designed to bring people together and celebrate local entrepreneurs. Gardening supplies and cleaning products, to stationary and specialty pantry goods – this shop has an incredible assortment of odds and ends. Almost every product would make an amazing birthday, dinner party, housewarming, or even anniversary gift. Prices range from $1 to $300, spanning all sorts of different types of artisan and locally made products. There’s something for everyone here.

When Caroline Weaver does retail she does it from a fresh perspective and with a unique voice. Her stores are everything I love about shopping - the thrill of discovery, learning about new products, finding something you wouldn’t find anywhere else… the reward of her hard work being a curation of products that thrill the shopper. Her new project Locavore is no exception. Her passion is on display here. Every chosen product, nut, screw & bolt, shelf, cabinet and bit of signage come from deep within her soul. It’s all an extension of her and her unbridled enthusiasm for the retail experience. Do yourself a favor and go immerse yourself in her world for an hour or so. You’ll be better for it.

I *LOVE* this store! Caroline and team have thoughtfully curated a one-of-a-kind shop that offers unique and interesting products of all sorts. Whenever I travel to NYC, I try to make this a stop on my trip. They've got fun beauty products, knick-knacks of all sorts, paper goods, jewelry, candy, pickles, and seltzer (and so much more)! Where else can you get all this!? Go in and support them. You won't be dissapointed.

In a city where you can trip over three vape shops in a single block, stumbling into The Locavore felt like finding the neighborhood’s soul. Caroline Weaver has curated something special here—equal parts community hub, sustainability center, and gift-giving goldmine. Whether I’m grabbing everyday essentials (coffee beans, dish soap, the usual suspects) or hunting for that perfect “I thought of you” gift, this place always delivers. Supporting local isn’t just a nice idea—it’s a way of life. And in a time where we’re all trying to spend our money more thoughtfully, The Locavore proves you don’t have to sacrifice style, quality, or conscience. Beauty, craftsmanship, and a whole lot of heart—under one very chic roof.
