These Are the 7 Best Indigenous–Owned Hotels in Canada - AFAR

"Opened in 2022 on historical Métis river lots, this 40-room boutique lodge and adjacent Cultural Gathering Centre were designed by Métis architect Tiffany Shaw to evoke Métis river lot buildings; guest rooms feature Métis-style patchwork quilts and the lodge interior includes a large fireplace and a taxidermied white bison. The property offers year-round cultural programming—traditional art workshops, star viewing, voyageur canoe tours—and amenities such as a café, campground, sky-watching domes, cross-country ski trails and a skating rink. The nearby Visions, Hopes, and Dreams wildlife park showcases rare white bison, wood bison, plains bison, elk and Percheron horses, while the Cultural Gathering Centre houses a restaurant and gift shop and anchors community-focused experiences." - Debbie Olsen

It got to -33C overnight, and in those temperatures the door to the skywatching dome was too cold (frozen?) to latch. They accommodated and took the best care of us in that situation. I would highly recommend spending the night here to anyone (just maybe save the dome for a night that's above -15C.) The food and service were both simply outstanding.

Always a great place for a meal with a view. The ice is off the North Saskatchewan River and the river valley is alive with migrating geese, ducks, and birds!

1 star for the food being filling and 1 for the view. This lodge does not respect reservations, or perhaps they don't want group reservations of elderly in wheelchairs. 🤷‍♀️ I arrived with a group of LTC residents to the lodge at 11:24am. for our 11:30 reservation, and it took about 10 minutes to unload them and get them seated in the restaurant. Once settled, in about 10 minutes, the wait staff had taken our order. All was well... until it wasn't. The eldery residents we had brought out for lunch waited OVER AN HOUR for their food. Meanwhile, we learned the lodge CEO was seated behind us (after we had arrived), and her party was served before us. After we received our meal and her party left, she proceeded to approach us and try to mitigate our frustrations. She suggested we make a reservation NEXT TIME, which we had done already for the current visit. She then suggested we order our food ahead NEXT TIME. So we asked how do we do that and she couldn't answer that on the spot, fine. We then asked her if there was a takeaway menu or a menu online, and NO there is not. Needless to say, there will be NO NEXT TIME because the kicker to this story is that this current visit was the next time. A few weeks before, staff had taken the same size group out to this restaurant, and the same long wait occurred, but nothing was addressed. We would have loved to continue to take our residents here because of the close proximity to our facility. However, being made to feel our long wait was our fault🤬, there will be no further outings here.

The Lodge at Metis Crossing provides exceptional accommodation in a tranquil environment. The warm welcome from Judy at the front desk was greatly appreciated. The king room, with balcony and view of the river, was well appointed. The bed had a comfortable mattress, large pillows, and cozy quilt. The window to the bedroom had a blind and curtain for light elimination as required. The available fridge worked efficiently and was quiet. The heating and air conditioning system was digital and worked effectively. The balcony was clean and had two chairs with ample space to move about in to take in the delightful view of the surrounding countryside. Food and beverage service from the Bistro restaurant was excellent. The selection of items on the menu is very creative, beautifully prepared, and delicious. I had the Metis Crossing Breakfast in the morning and Fried Fish Basket at dinner time, both are highly recommended. The walking areas around the property and near by are truly unique, blending local history in charming surroundings. I highly recommend a stay at this delightful location!

Went to the lodge today to have lunch. Such a nice location but the cafe area was very messy and the floors were gross. Didnt feel comfortable eating there so went back into smoky lake to eat.

This lodge is amazing and in a beautiful setting. It’s recently opened and is right next to the North Saskatchewan River. My wife and I did not stay here but we certainly would like to. We were impressed with the quality of the building construction and ambiance. We had no contact with staff nor did we see a room so no comment on that aspect of the lodge but location, location, location and it is beautiful.

Took the Buffalo tour. Closest I've ever been to an albino Buffalo!

Yelp
For $15 you get to see helpful and engaging college students explain this fascinating part of Canadian culture. Facility is brand new and spotless. Also: * Stroll down the path and feast on some Saskatoon berries, choke cherries, and wild raspberries! * Enjoy and interesting and well-prepared lunch (smoked trout burger on bannock is the way to go)! * Ice cream featuring local berries! * Stay overnight in the trappers' cabins! * Hotel opening soon! Would a gift shop be nice (sashes!)? Sure would.

Yelp
Near smoky lake. Went to a persaud meteor event in December. I found it to be very disorganized. I called in the morning and they said events start at 6pm. I went a bit early to go have dinner at the restaurant. I ordered at the counter and sat down before everyone else. The wait staff proceeded to serve almost half the restaurant despite me ordering first. I had a hunch there was Asian racism here since I noticed another Asian couple completely ignored for over 30 min after sitting down and had to request a menu. But we are in small town alberta near smoky lake so that's completely expected. Once I mentioned something I got my food in less than 1 min which was surprising after waiting an hour for just a bison soup and burger. The food was okay. Potato salad was just boiled potatoes with mayo. The burger was nothing special. Food was a miss that's for sure. And probably won't ever be back. Not knowing what was going on the event made it underwhelming. At 7pm finally an announcement was made. There was an art station, a small speech and a little tent to watch a little show.
