The 15 Best Restaurants In Bar Harbor, Maine 2024

"This bright second-story bar overlooking Main Street is the best place in town to sample oysters. You can get really academic trying to compare salinity notes in the bivalves plucked from different areas around Mount Desert Island, or you can just go all-in on a few dozen sweet Bar Harbor Blondes and have fun with toppings like blueberry jalapeno mignonette and pickled onion ice. We went late night for some small bites and drinks to end our night in the harbor, the bartender (I believe) was also our waitress and was very professional, kind, and made us an amazing cocktail that paired very well with our sushi. The Sushi was very fresh and filling, the guacamole was also surprisingly good! Will definitely be returning the next time we visit. The atmosphere was very pleasant and quiet compared to the rest of the town in the busy season. Great choice for late night reprieve from the busy and tourist filled streets. Check it out!

Absolutely loved our experience. The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We had the sushi burrito, fruita de marre, whole snapper, oysters. they also offer happy hour with discounts on food and drinks. service was attentive and friendly, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing seafood feast.

Had a great experience here for a late lunch. Service was great and interior was clean and well lit. They had a specific dog menu which was great and my pup approved of the chicken and rice. We enjoyed the lobster bake and tartare.

The food was incredible! Every drink was impeccable. I felt transported into a beautiful world ran by expert chefs. Love it so much would come back again over AND OVER

Google
Amazing! We had a fantastic lunch here today with some amazingly fresh oysters! When we walked in we basically had the place to ourselves. The music was very loud and when our waitress Angel heard us discussing whether we should dine inside or out due to the volume she immediately turned it off. When she turned it back on it was at a much lower volume. We sat in very cushy chairs by the window and ordered a flight of oysters for two. The cranberry and blonde were our favorite. We also very much enjoyed the volcano roll. The food and service were fantastic. We’ll definitely return!

Found this place on a luck. Tried to eat at Getty's down the road and they had an over an hour. Wait. So this lovely young lady off the street, said we have no weight upstairs at the loft. We were hungry, so we jumped on. It walked up The stairs got sat down at a lovely little restaurant and 2 our surprise, the food was outstanding. I repeat outstanding. Go here, go here now. Don't go to Getty's down the street where all the hype is. You'll sit. You'll wait and the food here is much better. Thanks again. Young lady who pulled us in off of the street. We thought this was a great dinner treat.

Google
The oysters were amazing- i loved the pickled onion shaved ice which paired perfectly! My family ordered a variety of seafood dishes and they were all bursting with wonderful flavors. It felt like we were eating at a high-end restaurant but the prices were lower than some of the other seafood restaurants in town. Highly recommend!

Google
Very nice atmosphere. The service was very good. Since there were a lot of us in my party, had to try the lobster bake. The lobster was sweet and juicy. The ahi tuna poke bowl had sea salt edamame, which I’ve never tried in NY so it was quite delicious. The ahi tuna was a little on the salty side. I would pass on the poke here in Maine. The garlic crab fries were decent. Pretty much like any other place that sells French fries. The Mac and cheese and chicken tenders were steaming hot so eat with caution for the little kiddos. The wonton nachos were pretty good. I would re-order that appetizer. I’ve never had blueberry soda but it must be a thing here in bar harbor. It tasted quite good as well. I also saw an ice cream shop selling it as well. I didn’t eat the raw oysters so I can’t comment on them. The fried lobster roll was not worth the price. It was one fried lobster placed on bread. There was more bread than lobster. I must be going to the wrong seafood spots in Maine. Next time, try out one of those warehouses where you can get wholesale lobster and see if they can steam it for you.

Yelp
The Loft Raw Bar had a delightful selection of the freshest oysters, ones I had not heard of but the server was incredibly well versed in what each was like as well as what delightful sauce would go well with. The mignonette I liked the most had blueberries in it and was really refreshing and complimented the recommended oyster quite well. They have cooked selections as well. In addition to oysters we had a crab Rangoon flatbread that I will definitely be trying to copy for my next event. The service was amazing, the seafood was fresh and well complimented, and the ambience was very comfortable, it was like being at the breakfast bar in a friend's kitchen. Definitely a great place to dine when visiting Bar Harbor!

Yelp
Ah-mazing spot!! Very contemporary, modern and upbeat vibe. A little different than what we saw when walking around Bar Harbor. Staff was extremely nice and attentive. Ordered a couple beers, dozen oysters, lobster stack and surf and turf. All dishes were extremely fresh tasting and amazing. Place wasn't as packed as some of the other places, which had me worried at first, but so glad we decided to just come in. This will definitely be a spot to come again if we're ever in town!

Yelp
Came here for dinner after a long day at Acadia National Park. Delicious seafood, wonderful views, and great vibes. Located on the second floor, you will get a beautiful view over the street and of the water. Decorated with twinkling lights, it's a fun vibe perfect for date night or dinner with friends. Their oyster flight was great, and the perfect way to sample their 5 different types of oysters. Ahi Tuna Steak was incredible - cooked to perfection with just the right crust outside. And their Sushi Burrito was stuffed with shrimp and tuna, a great meal. Delicious cocktails. Their Graffiti Martini is a good espresso martini using local espresso, and Wicked Effen Summer was super refreshing and tasty - loved the blueberry flavor. The do allow reservations, so if you're planning to visit during a busier time, I'd recommend making one. Great variety of seafood. Recommend coming here for dinner.

Yelp
Best happy hour in bar harbor, hands down! Super classy place with great food and service. We happened to come right at happy hour, which is 4-6 every day, even weekends! Draft beers are $5, which for some is even more than half off. They have an excellent variety of local drafts, as well as a great draft wine list (which is also $5). Such a great deal! We also ordered an oyster flight, all of which were fresh and divine. The sushi burritos and flatbreads were half price, so my husband and I ordered a sushi burrito to split. It was so good we ordered a second one. The flatbreads looked great also, and they had a few to choose from. It wasn't too busy while we were there, but the service was quick and our bartender was super friendly. The food is so good, and the happy hour prices can't be beat!!

Yelp
Raw bar is a restaurant catered to raw seafood entrees. They are served in sushi rolls, ceviche or seafood towers. We visited on a Friday evening around 545pm. We were still offered the happy hour menu on top of the dinner menu. It was lovely to sit outside with nice breezes. Service is okay. We needed to wait a while for water and orders. As far as food, we were disappointed by the less than mediocre food. Here are a few tips for anyone interested in dining at this raw bar: 1. Avoid Sushi items! This place is not great at doing sushi. Both the volcano or the sushi burrito we ordered aren't great. The rice made was awful and the flash fried shrimps were overcooked. 2. The hamachi ceviche was quite good though the serving size was small. 3. Our best dish ordered is the scallop BLT. 3 scallop skewers were served and all are delicious. This makes part of my memories of my vacation. However, I doubted we will come back again.

Yelp
Food and drinks were amazing. We started with the scallop ceviche and it was a perfect start to our meal. The Wicked Effen Summer speciality cocktail was delicious. I loved the Ahi Tuna stack, it tasted just like a deconstructed sushi roll. My boyfriend had the lobster stack and also enjoyed it. Staff were very nice, inside decor was a little tacky but still a nice place.

Yelp
We've had our eye on a visit to this place for a year after spotting it while we ate across the way at Testa's last summer. We had the opportunity for a date night and went for it. We started with a flight of oysters each and after a quick Google search could see these were the best priced oysters in Bar Harbor this summer. They were well shucked and super fresh. The pearl onion minionette was a perfect topper. For dinner, I had the ahi tuna which was delicious but the "everything" crust was pretty salty. My husband had the bucatini and they were very accommodating and were able to give him a few more mussels instead of the scallops (he loves scallops but they don't always love him back). The only downside to our experience was our server. She was also the bartender and wasn't very attentive. We had to wait some time for her to come over when we got there despite very few people being there. We had also gotten there during happy hour but when we were being rung out, we hadn't gotten the happy hour deal and my husband made a comment which was laughed off as when she happened to have rung it in and was not corrected. He was not impressed and didn't think it was very funny. Note due to apparent needed update: we arrived and were sat at 5:45 and the drink order was not taken until 5:55. The only other people there were 2-3 people at the bar.

Yelp
Although overlooking Bar Harbor's busy Main Street, its location on the second floor affords it a degree of calm, making it the perfect place to take a pause and chill. Despite having had dinner already, we were drawn to their selection of locally harvested oysters. So we ordered a platter plus a pound of Maine Stone Crab Claws to share. The oysters were excellent, briny with a clean fresh taste. What an interesting choice of condiments, mignonette sauces and ices to pair with the oysters. The fire ice delivered a fiery kick while the watermelon ice was refreshingly light and fruity. Here's our verdict on the oysters: Bar Harbor blonde - mid size, sweetest of the lot MDI (Mount Desert Island) - briniest of the lot Winter Point - large size with a firm meaty texture Taunton Bay- plump and juicy The chilled Maine Stone Crab Claws were awesome; sweet, juicy and very fresh. We enjoyed the oysters so much we returned the next day for another round. Although a raw bar, this restaurant also serves decent entrees. We sampled the Sushi Burrito (quite interesting), Pork Belly BLT Sandwich and the Fried Snapper with rice and vegetables. The Snapper was fried whole in a light batter, the crispy outer layer giving way to soft tender flesh underneath. All-in, a tasty dish, nicely seasoned, perfect with rice and pickled carrots. Last but not least, our servers Beth and Victor deserve a shout-out for their friendly and attentive service!

Yelp
3.5 stars We ordered a variety of food and drinks, the Crab Rangoon flatbread was an absolute standout! We also ordered the Garlic Crab fries (not pictured) but we were disappointed the mountain of garlic was raw! It was so strong and overpowered everything so it left the dish inedible. We also got the Oyster flight and they tasted so fresh but definitely had a bit of sand that could have been rinsed better. The service was fine and our waitress was polite.

Yelp
Great food and service. A lot of oyster options. Tried a flight to get 5 different locally sourced oysters. Absolutely delightful. It's got a great view of a cute little tourist spot. Love the art work on the walls. Lots of great sharable appetizers to enjoy. Wish I had gotten a volcano once I saw one:

Yelp
What went well? Everything This is a awesome spot with very interesting items and great staff

Yelp
We were at the Loft for dinner last night. Comparing to their next-door neighbor Testa's, our loft dining experience is borderline unpleasant due to the unprofessional behaviors of the server. While I understand it's the night before Hurricane Lee and everyone was acting a bit differently, the servers at Loft were all acting like it's an employee party with minimum attention to the only two tables of customers (we were one of the tables). The busboy ended up serving us, topping off our soda and brought out the food. The food tasted good, but my husband's entree came out a solid 15 minutes after mine, which is very unacceptable. If we had known it would be like this, we would have both ordered flatbread that came out in a timely manner. I wonder if Loft and Testa's belong to the same owner. You actually go through Testa's to enter Loft. Anyway, while our Testa's dinner was perfect, we left Loft unsatisfied and disappointed. But I would say Loft is beautifully decorated. If the service is better, it should be an ideal place for a date night.

Yelp
What a fun place and a great location. The flash fried snapper and pokey nachos were some of the best I've ever had. We will definitely be back again Marina made the night extra special with such great service.
google avatar

Elena M.

Yelp
We requested the patio table overlooking the street and the hostess was nice enough to get it cleaned off so we could sit there. The food was all pretty good and the service was good and quick also.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
We can only really speak to the seafood tower, which was incredible for the price. We got the middle size tower and it was more than enough for a full meal. We went for lunch on a Saturday and the place was pretty empty, which makes me think it's more a dinner spot. It's a really lovely space and worth checking out for fresh seafood!
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Pretty good experience! We wanted a late night snack after a long day of hiking but we wanted it togo. I gave them a call around 9pm and let them know all we wanted was their Volcano roll and they were happy to provide it for us. That was great cause we wanted to sit on the grass in the courtyard outside! The Volcano roll was AMAZING! Fresh ingredients and hot hot buttery crab on top was mouth watering. I would for sure recommend!
google avatar

Abigail L.

Yelp
First time we came here. We wanted to try something else asides from lobster roll. Definitely a place that we'll come back to. Everything we ordered was delicious. Order the sushi burrito. Staff were pleasant, service was quick. Restaurant is cute, a beach style.
google avatar

Caitlin M.

Yelp
We stopped by during happy hour and sat on the patio with our 2 dogs and our baby. It was peaceful sitting outside enjoying the night watching the crowds below. We ordered a cocktail that was good. For food we ordered the crab flatbread, oysters, ahi tuna, sushi burrito, and ceviche. I would highly recommend the tuna! The food came out really quickly. It's fun - they even have a dog menu for furry friends.
google avatar

Tori S.

Yelp
Great happy hour deals - $5 drinks and sushi burrito is half off. Service was good too. Nice ambiance, but nothing extraordinary. The sushi burrito was average, but I would definitely get it again for the happy hour price.
google avatar

Robin N.

Yelp
Lovely ambiance. The cleanliness and decor is nice. We just stopped for a quick bite. I like the offerings and the oysters were great.
google avatar

Linda D.

Yelp
This restaurant has got to be one of the top places to have lunch. We had a dozen Cadillac oysters that were sweet and very fresh. Cedric the chef made homemade Guacamole that was fantastic along with a beet salad that was to die for.
google avatar

Cyndi D.

Yelp
YOU HAVE TO GET THE GUAC AND CHIPS. Both are homemade and fantastic. Stopped her for a cocktail and a snack and were super impressed! My husband loved his "Painkiller" served in a pineapple glass.
google avatar

Ariel L.

Yelp
Fun ambiance but in my opinion it was over priced and our server forgot our order, so we were waiting for a while close to 45 mins before she realized and had to take our order again. I'd recommend somewhere else for dinner. Nice raw bar.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
We stopped in for a drink and appetizer. My wife chose the sharable ""Volcano"" sushi plate. It was awesome! We should have taken a picture before digging in as the presentation was a work of art. We noticed a few other items coming out from the kitchen and they all looked great as well. Wait staff were very pleasant and conversational. I would highly recommend this establishment.
google avatar

Kim A.

Yelp
Great location overlooking the street & overlooking the bay area from upstairs. Server was very helpful. We tried the Parmesan french fries, little different take & we were not disappointed trying new things!

Alan R.

Yelp
I don't like to leave bad reviews but will make an exception here. Picked this place based on reviews. A big mistake for us. Truly bad evening. Incompetent bar, bad food and very poor service. Enough said.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Oysters were amazing. Scallop ceviche was awesome. The staff were very helpful. We enjoyed the visit.

Vira S.

Yelp
If I could I will eat there every day. Oysters are always fresh. Tuna tartar and tuna nachos are the best. They have very good sushi rolls. Supper friendly staff.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday at 430 and it was dead empty.... Which I saw another review that said it was empty on a Friday night but my husband said they had a happy hour posted on their website and since I don't eat oysters I was happy to go for a few beers while he had his oyster fix. Empty place should've been a red flag. The server told us there was no happy hour during the week (what place only has a weekend happy hour). I told her what it said online but didn't feel like arguing because she tried to say oh that's referring to lunch from 12-1 (also that's called lunch not happy hour). I also found it weird there's a huge sign in the kitchen about happy hour though I couldn't read it. Again- didn't feel like arguing today since the server was dodging my few comments about it pretty hard. There's a lot of pluses here aside from the happy hour debacle..... it's clean, modern, cute and has a great view if you sit by the window. I loved the atmosphere despite it being empty. Music was upbeat. Staff was nice and attentive the rest of our time here. I loved sitting by the window and drinking a beer. My husband loved the oysters which were $3 a pop but you can create your own platter from 5 local choices; there is a minimum of 3 when purchasing oyster. He also raves about the sauces. He had the fire ice and the blueberry mignette. He loved both of them. We would come here again. Just not for happy hour ;)
google avatar

Josie T.

Yelp
The entrance to the restaurant is a little strange but the food is great! We love our server too. We will come back again.
google avatar

Kendra W.

Yelp
Same owners as Testa's. Located upstairs (elevator) available if needed. Indoor or outdoor seating. Lots of local raw oysters available, seafood towers, yummy apps and drinks. We had the Wonton Poke nachos, Crab Rangoon Flatbread and Fantasy Flight with Scallop Ceviche, Hamachi Crudo and Ahi Poke. All were super yummy!!! Items were presented as photographed on menu. Edible flowers, orchid garnishes, black salt, etc. As with Testa's Dog friendly on the inside as well.
google avatar

Soula P.

Yelp
Fresh oysters, ceviche, and seafood dishes. We got to try a bunch of different things with interesting flavor combinations. Jane took care of us and service was fantastic!

Aman B.

Yelp
Food was really good and delicious. We tried the tuna stack, risotto, sushi burrito, and ahi tuna. Everything was really good but the tuna stack was simply amazing. Ambience is really nice as well. Perfect for a nice dinner after a good hiking day. It's open until late so that helps too. Only issue is that their knowledge about gluten free is limited. First day we were told that tuna stack is gluten free. Since we loved it so much we went back again. Second day they told us that it's not gluten free as fish is marinated in soy sauce which I did enquire the first day. And they assured me it's ok. Other than that we had great experience. Regular food 5 stars Gluten free 3 stars as I'm not sure i can trust them fully

Yelp
1. The beehive - ok but a bit expensive 2. Oysters flight3. Surf and turf blt's - very good! Scallop and pork belly made a mini burger; sweet sauce 4. Parmesan Garlic Crab Fries - interesting; fries are good. I thought it's like crab finger but

Jenny E.

Yelp
We enjoyed our entire experience at The Loft! Our waitress Sofia was lovely. She was super friendly and extremely helpful. She suggested we do the flight of oysters and the fire ice and blueberry jalapeño mignonette! They were amazing! We snacked on fantasy flight before moving on, again Sofia suggested the surf and turf BLT. Omg!!! Unbelievable!! We enjoyed our experience so much we came back another night!! Go to The Loft!!!

Alan M.

Yelp
We found the most place at a time when most places were closing or closed. The staff was friendly and effective. We had the shrimp coctail, margarita flatbread, guacamole ,and lobster stack.all were delicious and had generous portions.what a find!!

Nathan B.

Yelp
This was a cool place that feels modern and updated. We got the oysters and crab claws and we loved them. This would be a great place for dates without kids.

Michael S.

Yelp
Very fresh Tuna poke bowl! Sophia are server was excellent and very knowledgeable about local oysters. can't wait to go back!

Richard I.

Yelp
Great food and different than most other restaurants in town. Elevated and with an Asian twist.

Anette I.

Yelp
The oysters were good but their "fun" selection of mignonette left much to be desired. Blueberry jalapeño sounded so good but when it arrived it was everyone's least favorite. Sushi burrito was decent. Flatbreads could be skipped. If you're coming here come for the raw seafood tower and skip the rest.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
We were on a tour to try the best oysters in Bar Harbor and we sure found them here. They offer a menu of different oysters from around the area and wow! They were delicious and fresh (of course, some are sources 200 yards away). They offer very unique accoutrements and I recommend trying the red onion ice, it's so unique. It was not busy when we came and it was later in the evening, so you can easy grab a bite if you're out late.

Cheryl F.

Yelp
Waited 7 minutes at a table before I was acknowledged. Was brought a menu and water as I requested. Waited another 10 minutes before I asked a server to find my server. Waited another 10 minutes then left. I could understand if it was busy, but it wasn't busy. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
Came here during hurricane lee and was NOT disappointed! Sat at the bar. Staff was friendly. Got oysters, a flatbread and nachos. Everything was great. Perfect spot to wait out the storm!
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
This place is great! They have some outdoor tables but I would recommend eating inside. It has a great eclectic vibe with vibrant colors. Staff is friendly and efficient! They check in on you regularly without being intrusive. Lots of options on the menu! I got the Fantasy Flight and the Seacuterie. Both excellent (although a bit more food than I expected.....but I'll take that over skimpy portions)! They have a spicy cucumber margarita that is very good. I'm not a fan of cucumber in my drinks but the spiciness of the jalapeño balance out the blah of the cucumber. I ordered a second one! Over all, and excellent place to relax and enjoy some seafood. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Upstairs off Main Street. Went @4:30. No happy hour. It's from 12-3. Weird. Anyway had the scallop ceviche and a glass of rose. Great service as there was only 2 others there. Maybe it's a late night spot

Greg B.

Yelp
My family loves oysters and we try to get them whenever and wherever we can. The quality and selection here was best we've had. Very fresh and the oyster prep was top notch with a great variety. We spent 2 days in Bar Harbor and came here twice.
google avatar

Kaitlin H.

Yelp
We come here every year for these Ahi nachos! So so good. Don't let the place being dead scare you away, off season is a big factor around here. Service is great and they stay open a bit longer than most businesses. Would recommend!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Do not get the frutti di mare. Appetizer size entree was so disappointing. The 3 bites I was given AS AN ENTREE were very tasty but I left hungry and ended up getting pizza. Ill pay for delicious food and decent portions but this was ridiculous.
google avatar

Rebeka M.

Yelp
Really good raw seafood among many other things. We had an early dinner here on a Monday night. We went at 5pm, no wait at all with plenty of seating. They have a great happy hour from 4-6pm - half off flat breads and 5 local oysters for $12. We ended up ordering 14 oysters because they were so fresh and delicious. The bruschetta flat bread was fresh, crispy, and had this wonderful balsamic vinegar reduction that they drizzled over it. For entrees we ordered the frutti di mare with bucatini, shrimp, scallops, mussels, and lobster (very savory - 5 stars) and the scallop risotto (scallops were great but too much rice and it was a little bland - would give 3 stars). They had a nice beer and wine selection. The interior of the restaurant is really nice, with a mixture of booths, tables, and club chairs with tables. There is a nice view of Main Street and the harbor. The staff were really sweet, friendly and gave good suggestions on menu items. Great place to grab an early dinner.
