We'd just been to see Wayne Shorter at the Philharmonic Hall across the road and so by the time we came out we where pretty hungry.
We had already decided having taken a look at the menu that we'd go to The London Carriage Works.
Now to start with it was one of those, have you booked a table moments, you know when the place is half empty but they still look at you as if 'THIS is a place you should book for...' in that pretentious way. We hadn't. After confirming with the maitre de that they would be happy to take our money after all they preceded to leave us sat on the comfy enough sofa's for near on 30 maybe even 40 minutes (remember we were hungry!). When finally the guy came back over saying 'Haven't you received your drinks yet?' our reply was 'We haven't even had our drinks order taken...' Kinda bad but with the offer of complimentary drinks we perked up a bit. Bad service rectified, we moved to our table.
NOW WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT ACCEPT THE BREAD! Believe me, it was a tiny piece of bread, ok it was nice but not £5.50 nice!!
The meal itself was lovely, a strange little shot glass of soup to begin with which was interesting enough. The starter was ok but I ordered the wrong thing, my boyfriend loved his rabbit and foie gras parfait though. The steak was gorgeous, beautifully presented and the flavours where out of this world good.
So why only the three stars? Well there was the bread, £5.50, I know I've already said it and I'll say it again £5.50! It was probably about 1.5 x 5 x 8cm, teeny tiny little slice (well one each so two of them) But come on, what a con. And then remember those free complimentary drinks?? Well hadn't they just put them on the bill! And then you have that, should we mention it or just pay for them awkwardness, we mentioned it and they where very apologetic and took it off, but still shouldn't have happened.
I should be giving this place 4 if not 5 stars but the bad service, followed by the £5.50 (there it is again!) along with the drinks mix up just left us feeling rather cheated and awkward, so much so the tastiness of the food just wasn't what we came away talking about. It was move, why on earth did we leave a tip...
