Best Restaurants in Tooting: Where to Eat Near Tooting Broadway | Eater London

"Christopher Smith’s market stall serves a homestyle Jamaican cuisine of fried fish escovitch; oysters fanged with either Scotch bonnet and lime, or garlic and pepper sauces; patties; and city dishes like salt beef on coco bread with Jamaican hot sauce. He’s also developed a new line in crepes in recent months, and is partial to delivering weekend specials of dumplings, jerk chicken, or smoked mackerel fritters." - Russell Burke

The Power Landlords Have Over Restaurants Right Now | Eater

"A Caribbean food stall operating in Tooting Market that received an eviction notice and fell outside available pandemic protections, exemplifying how market managers and landlords have sought to alter the tenant mix in markets and food spaces, leaving small-scale vendors vulnerable to displacement despite wider moratoriums tied to COVID-related revenue loss." - Ellie Krupnick

Tooting Market Restaurant The Lone Fisherman Will Not Be Evicted | Eater London

"After being threatened with eviction following police raids and search warrants, the stall’s eviction notice was rescinded and a new lease offered after constructive dialogue mediated by Tooting MP Dr Rosena Allin‑Khan; management apologised for acting hastily and chef-owner Christopher Smith will continue to trade. The threat provoked extensive local protests and social‑media backlash and prompted allegations of racial profiling by Smith and fellow targeted stallholder Hughie Crawford. The owner says he wants to move on and focus on the homestyle Jamaican food that made the stall popular—particularly fried fish escovitch; oysters served with either Scotch bonnet and lime or garlic-and-pepper sauces; patties; and city dishes like salt beef on coco bread with Jamaican hot sauce—while calling for community healing." - James Hansen

Tooting Market Restaurant The Lone Fisherman Evicted After Police Raid | Eater London

"A long-standing stall run by chef-owner Christopher Smith serving homestyle Jamaican dishes — notably fried fish escovitch, oysters with Scotch bonnet and lime, garlic-and-pepper sauces, patties, and city-style salt beef on coco bread with Jamaican hot sauce. The business says it was the subject of a Misuse of Drugs Act search warrant issued on 5 September and, despite no public evidence that drugs were found or that any crime had been committed, management handed the stall a three-day eviction letter; the owner has stated he was told to vacate even though he has been ‘found innocent’. The stall has paid rent through the pandemic and had operated in SW17 for nine years, has opened a GoFundMe to relocate, and has attracted community support — including a petition with thousands of signatures and protests — amid allegations that the rapid eviction amounted to racial profiling." - James Hansen

Food was super tasty! I ordered the fish dish. My vegetarian friend looked a little uncomfortable seeing the fish eyes so I asked the staff member to cut the head. And also asked for some gravy. They were more than happy to do so. Staff were really nice and friendly. They serve the food in proper plates, it feels so homely. The atmosphere of the market is buzzing! It’s a great place to stop over before we went and did the Great British Bake of experience. Would highly recommend coming here for lunch!

Chris is an exceptional chef. His services are the best in the whole of south west London. His food has Jamaican flavours and most importantly there's a variety. For both vegetarians and meat lovers. Please ensure you visit and try the best Caribbean cuisine in London.

I’ve eaten at The Lone Fisherman a few times now, and it never disappoints. The food is always delicious, fresh, and super filling you can really taste the quality in every bite. On top of that, the customer service is top tier. The owner is genuinely kind and welcoming, and he’s even given me a free drink on a few occasions, just out of the kindness of his heart. It’s that kind of personal touch that keeps me coming back. Highly recommend!

We got the jerk chicken and it was a big portion with amazing taste. Comes with salad, plantain , and rice, and it was probably the best I’ve had in London. There is space to sit too. The service was 10/10 too , extremely friendly chef . If you’re in the area, take the plunge and give it a go. You don’t regret it.

Arrived having never tried the cafe before and noticed locals hanging out there, always a good sign. I asked the owner so what am I having? He smiled said Oxtail. And so it was, rich tasty on rice with salad. Not posh, just superb. Check it out.

Food was great, the jerk chicken is spicy. No chicken gravy on the day but it was nice nonetheless. Lamb patty was also tasty and the rum punch is nice on a hot day.

Nice little surprise in Tooting market. The owner was very helpful and the service was good. He makes his own pepper sauce which was a nice touch. The mutton and potato curry was tender and flavourful. Decent sized portions. There are tables to eat in the market or you can get takeaway.
