Best downtown Detroit restaurants for the North American International Auto Show | Eater Detroit

"Expect a neatly edited drink menu of old-school bar classics like Pimm’s Cup and a Rob Roy, plus brief beer and wine menus. As for the food, expect English pub fare like bangers and mash and fish and chips. The space itself feels like a vintage pub, even though the build out was only just recently, and features a kitschy goat’s head (and butt) mounted to a column. Online ordering is also available." - Serena Maria Daniels

Detroit’s Best New Bars, Winter 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Detroit has a serious dearth of good old-fashioned pubs. Fortunately, the Lone Goat is stepping up to alleviate that problem. Inspired by the ancient English pubs, the Lone Goat is gorgeously decked out in dark wood and glowing amber walls, with a stunning curved wraparound balcony. Inside the lavishly restored Metropolitan Building, the pub serves traditional fish and chips and other pub fare with plenty of draft beer options, especially English and Scottish ales like Old Speckled Hen and Strongbow. There’s a solid gin and cocktail selection as well." - Mickey Lyons

Google
We had an awesome time at the Lone Goat drinking authentic Irish beers and watching the Tigers kick ass! Our bartender Julie was super friendly and attentive. We will be back!

We had the Haddock Chowder before the ballgame today. Nice spice heat. Great way to start our pre-game activities. Angie is attentive and a positive spirit. Not our first time here. Not our last.

Really cool spot to get a drink. Love the ambiance. The bar tenders were very helpful and nice. We just came for a drink but will be back next time to try the food as well!

We had a group of six, so kinda rough for seating. Small tables (really for 2), we picked 2 right inside the door that had bench seating across the back and brought up 3 other seats, seemed like the best option. Very calm night, a Wednesday, so not really any "vibe", not many visiting the place to really even people watch. Drinks that everyone ordered were fine, brews, wines and a cocktail. Menu of about 8 items, our group having either fish and chips or the shepherd's pie. Fish was an order of 2 good pieces, very crispy, a large portion of fries with that, but all our fries were just maybe warm, so disappointing. Shepherd's pie came in a cast skillet, full of tasty meat and a light layer of potatoes on top, beautifully browned. Darn, I forgot to take photos.

My friend & I tried out the Lone Goat (English style pub) the other day. We had their recommendations, and I was impressed by how light and clean the dishes were. Usually, when I have fish & chips or shepherd's pie, it's heavy in oil/fat, but not here. And the flavor profiles were spot on.

Very cool and causal vibe in a classic pub with a lot of character. Great for pregames. Solid cocktails and beer selection. The upstairs is very cool.

I've been to the Lone Goat a few times and always had a great experience, owing mostly to the excellent hospitality, atmosphere, and (mostly British) playlist. I've had the fish and chips and they are tasty, though I wish they had been that fluffy beer batter -- when I went, it was more of a breading and their chips are not the traditional thick cut chips but are skinny fries. I prefer fries so that's fine with me. I'm looking forward to trying other items on the menu, like the Welsh Rarebit. And they seem to have specials as well, like fried pickles, which I might have to get next time. Maybe someday, they will do a full carvery special...hey, an anglophile can dream, can't she? The drinks are excellent and they have a good selection spirits and beer. I always get the Gin Bramble because they are one of the few places in town that does one. As mentioned the staff is what really makes LG great. We noticed that a group came in wanting to watch the game and the bartender turned it on for them on the big TV which I thought was nice. So it's a good spot to catch a game, or meet up with friends. We also noticed that it's a popular spot for tourists which can be fun if you like meeting people from out of town. Cheers!

Google
Stumbled upon this place on a stroll through downtown Detroit. Second best shepherds pie from NYC to Minneapolis (and in at least 5 states) -Not a lot of cheese (which is great for me) -An almost a 1:1 ratio of mashed potatoes to meat. So it isn’t over-mashed or under… meated. -Flavorful -Hearty -10/10 would try it again

Yelp
Stopped here for a drink. Very cozy pub style, very comfortable seating. Surprisingly more spacious than I originally thought. Friendly staff, however when we were there only the bar part was open, no servers, so I'm not quite sure what their service hours are. I loved the different beer selection and that everything is on theme. The food menu looked fantastic so I would like to go back to try it. I've also have been wanting to try a traditional English breakfast so if they could do a brunch or something to add that in it would be a nice treat.

Yelp
The LoneGoat has been open a couple months but recently began serving food. We stopped in for dinner last night and were VERY impressed with the level of service. The bartenders are super friendly. The menu is small - which might be why it's so good! We had the fish and chips and the shepherds pie. Both outstanding!! They do offer lunch and happy hour. Highly recommend

Yelp
Sorry this place didn't hit for me. I was pretty excited and I've been planning making the trip downtown to The Loan Goat. The day we picked was boxing Day the day after Christmas beautiful British celebration Day, and was excited to see The Lone Goat had a boxing Day special a Saugatuck draft beer and fish and chips for 15 bucks, Yes please that sounds good. Shortly after arriving the excitement faded, stepping in the place looked good but finding a good table proved to be a little tricky there's no service at the tables seat yourself and go to the bar and order your food and drinks. The layout inside kind of made it hard to find a table but we found one upstairs by the dart board it was kind of cold and I wouldn't say that the atmosphere was the best. But that's okay I'll head down to the bar for beer then order the fish and chips special and the saugatuck, as I wait at the bar for what seems a long time, jonesing for that beer l get service that wasn't that friendly, ordered a beer tried to get a smithwicks they were out of then got rushed to order another beer and picked something I didn't like. That's okay maybe next time it'll work out better. Drink my beer step back up to the bar, get snuffed again, ask about ordering the special, female bartender says she has no idea what I'm talking about they don't run specials. Stand there confused and then another bartender steps up informs her of the special, she comes back over and seems mad now, so I asked for the saugatuck but they don't have the saugatuck tells me it never came in and to pick something else, at this point the beer choices were not my favorite and I ended up with something else I'm not even sure what I got. As far as the food goes I did get the fish and chips and the wife got the Welsh Rarebit (one of the few vegetarian items) I would say neither dish was that good, the fish was pretty snotty, small pieces the batter was okay but kind of soggy and overall a fail in comparison to true British fish. The biggest fail was the Welsh rarebit bread was almost totally burnt what little bit of cheese stuff they put on top was dried up and disintegrated the wife did not enjoy. The food came out to our table that was okay and the place looked good but overall I didn't like the atmosphere. The food was a fail and the beer struck out. Trust me British is who I am. I'll be back hopefully next time it will be better.

Yelp
Everything was AMAZiNG! Food, drinks, atmosphere, our bartender, Tara. We randomly walked and had a wonderful evening. Our new favorite place in Detroit.

Yelp
Came in. Music is chill. There's 12 people here and lots of staff without things to do. Opened two weeks ago. Still trying to get their kitchen open and approved with the city of Detroit. The manger didn't greet me. However, I was served right away. I ordered a dirty martini, the glasses were all dirty, so I waited, the drink is good. Not filled all the way and my glass was soaked when handed to me. I was offered nuts in a plastic glass. The bartender is very sweet and kept his eye on me. I did come alone so I appreciated this. No outside space. There is an upstairs. Full bar, some craft beer and cocktail menu offered. Four more people walked in. So I hope this turns into a happening spot! It's right next to Sid's and across from The Brakeman. No parking. Street parking or lot. No reservation I think needed here. At least until the kitchen opens. Come with friends. It's pretty low key. Not a dive bar at all. More upscale. The manager seems to only talk to one girl. He's on his phone and picked up some glasses. He's been cleaning. Inside is pretty cool. Old photos of boats and stuff. The bar is pretty. I laughed at the old boat comment. But it's true. Old clippers. I've been here for maybe 10 minutes and more people have come in. Mix of old and young. The vibe is pretty cool. Check it out. I wouldn't rate my experience a five by any means. Just another local bar, which hopefully stays around for a while. 3.8 stars Doris approved.

Yelp
We were downtown celebrating and were excited to check this new spot out. This is an English style pub. Having never been to England I couldn't really say if it was close to authentic, but my date assured me it was. We absolutely loved the atmosphere! I didn't go upstairs but I really should have. I wish they had more tvs because this would be an ideal spot for watching some Futbol! The service was fast and polite and the cocktails were delicious and unique. We definitely plan on coming back!

Yelp
Cool new spot to the Detroit Scene. I've been waiting for this spot to open for several years! I love the English pub style vibe. Being newly open, they offer a variety of cocktails, beer and wine. I can't wait until they serve food.

Yelp
Remember this: Terra makes the best drink. It's absolutely delicious. It's called the Wibble, but it should really be called TERRA because it matches her hair color. She's a stunning redhead, incredibly charismatic, and a beautiful woman. This drink isn't on the menu, but it's an absolute must-try. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Didn't get a photo of the food. Vibe is pub in a modern/chill way. Fish & Chips were worth it. Shepards Pie was a little heavy on the thyme. Good choice before the game.

Yelp
Angie the bartender was amazing with her knowledge of beers. Ciders and wines. She also gave excellent suggestions on appetizers. The ambiance of the old world pub is very much like an English pub. We would recommend to friends and family or anyone looking for an excellent lunch, casual dinning or just drinks. We had a good time for all on our party visiting Detroit for the first time.

Yelp
Unfortunately we did not have a four star experience either. Stopped in before a concert at Ford Field. Really like the concept. Order everything at the bar and have a seat. Ordered a beer, a cocktail and an appetizer. Grabbed a small table in the corner of the bar and waited for our app. Pub cheese and crackers mind you. After 40 minutes we left. Never received the food while all the tables around us received their full meals. I guess now I know why they have you pay for everything in advance. If you get fed up and leave, they have your food to give to someone else and they can also charge someone else for it.

Yelp
Unfortunately I did not have the same experience as the 4 star ratings. The Fish and Chips were at one point frozen. And not even good quality product frozen. Fries were limp, fish was nicely battered but one bite and I knew it was not fresh. Service could have been better. Much better in fact. Nice selection of beer, I'll give them that. They spent a lot of money putting this place together and it looks nice, but there are too many good places opening around town, to settle for mediocre.

Yelp
This place is very cool inside; however, the employees are not at all friendly or helpful. The day we were there they would not even make eye contact with anyone to get a drink or order food! Ordered fish and chips finally and was given a napkin and a knife. I really wanted to like this place, but they honestly do not know how to make people feel welcomed.

Mindy G.

Yelp
Fish and chips r amazing! Whenever downtown it's a must stop and have a pint and some yummy food!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and WOW. The bartenders were amazing, plenty of places to sit, and an open area feel with the 2nd floor open above. We ordered the pub cheese, which is made in house, as well as the burger and fish and chips. The food was hot and delicious. The fish and chips were crisp, tasty, and plenty of fish versus being mostly breading. They also have a weekday burger special for lunch and happy hour drinks M-F from 4-6pm. We will absolutely be back.

Yelp
Hubby and I stopped here for a quick drink before a show at the Detroit Opera House. Sat at the bar, which indeed had televisions showing a Tiger game and Michigan football. We were promptly greeted by Terra. The bar sitters to my right ordered food. The fish & chips looked amazing! The bar sitters to my left declared they had the fish & chips and they indeed are incredible. I must return!!

David T.

Yelp
Stopped in for a beer and some apps and really enjoyed it. And the service was fantastic. The bartender heard it was our anniversary and she gave us an apple spiced champagne on the house. Will be going back.

Yelp
Terrific service and the food was great! Our group had just gotten back from London and the fish and chips were just as good - if not better - than anything we had there! We actually gave the chef a round of applause!!

Yelp
Welcoming, friendly, and attentive bartenders. Great English style pub aesthetic that's different from any place I've been in Detroit. The place has a great vibe as they say nowadays. This place utilizes a more laid back bartender led dining experience meaning they don't use the typical hostess/server service model. You place your food and drink orders with one of the amazing bartenders, they promptly pour your beer or build you a delicious refreshing cocktail like a Pimms Cup or a Bramble Float, then you get to choose any available seat or table in the house that you prefer, and a food runner brings your silverware and delivers your food order to your table. I recommend sitting at the bar or upstairs by the front window for a birds eye view of the street and some great people watching. The Fish and Chips and the London Bridge Burger were both perfectly cooked & delicious, portions are very nice and the prices are very reasonable for downtown Detroit. This might be my new favorite spot in Detroit before a Tigers or Lions game. Everyone reading this should give it a go and check it out.

David R.

Yelp
The Lone Goat has, as expected, the atmosphere of an English Pub. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar. You take your drinks back to your table, but food is brought to you. The upstairs had tables near the windows overlooking the street, making it a good spot to watch the world go by. Some aspects were positive, but there were a few shortcomings. My wife and I had the traditional fish and chips, which were excellent, not just good. My son had bangers and mash, which he said was very good. The atmosphere is upscale, and the servers were both friendly and efficient. My major criticism is the seating. Small tables typically had a bench seating one or two awkwardly, with two backless seats (stools?), making it not entirely comfortably for groups of more than two. Folks sitting at the bar seemed to be comfortable, though. Food was reasonably priced, although drinks were on the high side, 6 to 8 dollars for a beer, with emphasis on British/Irish beer, Guinness, Boddington Ale, and Brown Castle.
