I had been minimizing my carb intake for a few years so doughnuts were really not in the cards. However, during the pandemic, my diet has been a bit more relaxed and as a result, I have been meaning to return to Looney for a fritter or two. Unfortunately, with back-to-back meetings most mornings, that was not to be. On a day off recently, I dropped in early afternoon for a treat. I had not eaten all day. The space seemed different because pick-up and drive-through are the only options right now. Instead of seeing a line of shoppers in the shop, the line is at the drive-through. Instead of regulars perched at the counter enjoying the banter with their morning coffee, the stools were empty. And instead of seeing smiling faces, they were hidden behind masks.
The trays against the wall were half empty, holding glazed, filled, and coconut-covered varieties. I quickly spotted the Looney bread that I was interested in trying. If you've never tried it, it resembles a cinnamon roll, if the cinnamon roll is long, flat, and sliced. The Looney bread features cinnamon studded with lots and lots of plump raisins and chopped walnuts. The bread is glazed in confectioners' sugar. (See picture, below). It was terrific and well worth the wait.
The fritter was not as good as they usually are. They were crispy, oily, and sugary - all pluses. But they lacked flavor.
Service was, as always, friendly and helpful. I cannot wait to return.
