Yelp
I I've been to The Lot before for drinks and a nearby concert, but I'd never actually watched a movie there. To my surprise, the experience is very similar to the original location in La Jolla fancy vibes and all.
****TIP: The restaurant and the cinema are technically one... but also not really. The menus differ, so what you're craving will decide where you want to order. Both menus are on the smaller side, but you'll still find a little bit of everything (plus cocktails, of course). If you're into big, plush seats that recline like you're about to enter hypersleep--paired with restaurant service--this might become your new favorite way to catch a movie, especially around lunch or dinner.
Pros
1. Full service during the movie--yes, you can snack without ever standing up.
2. Large reclining seats with tables. Basically first-class, but for movies.
3. Some seats let you lift the armrest and turn two seats into a cuddle couch which came in clutch when the movie got scary and my niece needed backup.
4. Smaller theater = cozy, not chaotic.
5. Free parking! A rare and beautiful thing.
Cons
1. Servers walking around during the movie can be distracting--especially when I was brought someone else's food... four separate times.
2. Restaurant and theater are the same place, but the menus don't overlap, which is a little disappointing. One location, two worlds.
3. Parking can get tricky depending on nearby events and busy hours.
4. You'll want to arrive early to order food and drinks. The kitchen was struggling the day we visited--the guests next to us never got their order, and their beer arrived during the last five minutes of the movie (a true tragedy).
Despite all that, I genuinely had a wonderful experience watching Wicked. I did remove one star, though. The main reason: zero direction when you walk in. No staff guiding you to your auditorium or helping with tickets, which left us wandering a bit. I also pre-ordered food from The Lot restaurant so I could bring it into the movie, but one dish was missing. When I went back to ask, they fixed it, but not without giving me a bit of attitude about how they "don't deliver" and how the kitchens are separate--which is exactly why I ordered early! I did get my full order eventually, but the hassle definitely killed the vibe.
