My girlfriend and I have been meaning to try The Lucky Well for some time. Head Chef Chad Rosenthal recently Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network show with the same name so there has been much local buzz about this place. Although it has been a staple on Bulter Ave in Ambler for white some time, it is certainly harder to get in than it used to be. With that said, I was pleasantly surprised to see the continued local vibes that exist here.
We stopped in during restaurant week and they offered a fixed price menu fro $39 that offered generous portions of menu items and few seasonal specials. To start, you could either pick a Cucumber Gazpacho or Corn and Tomato Salad (unfortunately, I did not grab photos of these) but they were both really good. The Gazpacho was unique but the tomato salad was better. We also got an order of their fried green tomatoes.
The main course is a selection of their barbecue (we got a mix) and served with a huge piece of cornbread and a side (we all got Mac and cheese or collard greens). This is where the problems started however, because we were served four meals for a different table. Chad came over himself and told us to take a few things off these plates while they remade our food and was very apologetic. That said, our order was still not entirely correct when it comeback but it was nice for them to accommodate us. They also gave us a free round of drinks to compensate.
The barbecue was perfect though, I don't know that I have had better pulled pork or bbq wings in Pennsylvania. They were out of the restaurant week desserts so we got Watermelon and Pineapple gelato and a huge piece of peanut butter pie (that was likewise amazing).
I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was the Saturday of a restaurant week and they were just overwhelmed. But I can't give them 5 stars after the issues and shear amount of time spent at the restaurant. The food definitely gets the highest marks though.
Definitely stop here if you are craving barbecue.
