The Lugger Hotel (Truro, Devon) 4 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Tucked away in a hidden cove on the Cornish coast, the Lugger won’t be mistaken for one of England’s new crop of splashy, fashin-conscious country boutiques. This is no criticism, either. The Lugger, once a seventeenth-century smugglers’ inn, is the kind of quiet and remote hotel where you go to make a getaway, rather than an entrance." - Tablet Hotels

The Lugger Hotel | Best places to stay in Truro

"This charming 17th-century inn in the south-coast fishing village of Portloe was once a favourite haunt of French brandy smugglers; one landlord, Black Dunstan, ended up on the gallows. It’s now a much brighter prospect: a 22-bedroom hideaway in white paint and bleached woods, with a sunny terrace serving crab and lobster fresh off the boat, and bijou spa offering aromatherapy, reflexology and Reiki treatments. There’s also a delightful Cottage Suite – housed in a little fisherman’s cottage up the path from the main building, with a log burner, kitchen and ocean views from its own patio. There’s easy access to the sub-tropical gardens and salty creeks of the lovely Roseland Peninsula, and the South West Coast Path is right in front of you, with pretty Megavissey to the east and upscale St Mawes to the west. An amazing location, full of Cornish charm. We stayed here for our anniversary in the beach cottage with a view of the stunning little beach. Restaurant served a lovely vegetarian meal for us and more than enough choice for breakfast. Accommodation very clean and comfortable with views to die for - even from the lovely rolled top freestanding bath. Perfect for a romantic holiday. All the staff are super friendly and willing help with anything . There are some beautiful coastal path walks from the beach and easy access to local attactions to complete your stay. We had an amazing time and its a memory we will cherish. We highly recommend this hotel and we will visit again.

Well what can i say about this beaut little place ? First of all I'd like to thank the staff ( the lovely Alison to be more specific) as you'll be hard pressed to meet a nicer person as nothing was too much trouble for her , the venue is situated in a working harbour all be it a very QUIET working harbour with free guest parking , the food was beautiful and well served in a spotlessly clean dining room the chef must have been bob on also as the care with which the food had obviously been prepared and cooked with was telling in its taste ( first class ) in my opinion, all around this location is located in a safe , peaceful and QUIET setting our only regret is that we could only stay for the one night as work curtailed our visit , oh and BTW your pet would enjoy the break as this is a pet friendly establishment . We'll definitely be staying longer on our next visit .

Excellent hotel in amazing location. Very dog friendly as evidenced by treats in the room and dog bowls also provided. Dog wash outside which helped remove most of the coast path from our cockapoo. Drying room for boots and gear another plus. Best mussels I’ve had in a long time in the restaurant. Very friendly staff. Easy to rate as excellent as they really go the extra mile.

The last time we ate here the portions were so small, we actually came away hungry and I gave a one star review. This time the portions were much better and the quality was amazing. What an improvement. It’s a shame there’s a service charge, but when we asked the waiter to remove it, he was understanding and discreetly removed it without any fuss whatsoever. (We like to give a cash tip separately, the amount decided by us, not the restaurant).

Really lovely weekend stay in this pretty, perfectly located little hotel. Loved the whitewashed look and the views so much, and being able to swim in the harbour was a luxury! The staff were totally charming and big thanks to Alison and the fab gents behind the bar for making our stay so comfortable.||Very dog friendly!

We went today 16/11/25 for Sunday lunch, they don’t offer Sunday lunch, we ordered from the menu, soup carrots and coriander, very bland, we left it, my wife ordered crab linguine, huge plate, no imagination, no tomatoes , no chili, no taste just bland, I had the mussels, chunky and delicious, the juice was nothing no taste, I did complain and the soup and lingerie was removed from the bill, this is such a shame, a beautiful location, wonderful hotel, but in need of a good chef. The service was ok, but the younger waitress had no idea what a Pinot Grigio was, blame the hotel management for this, need to provide training. A special day was spoilt, we are now in a pub having roast potatoes ax too late for lunch. Disappointing..

A real gem right on the water’s edge! We stopped in for lunch and the fish finger sandwiches were absolutely delicious — perfectly crisp fish with fresh, tasty sides. The mocktail was refreshing and the view from our table over the cove was just breathtaking. Friendly service and a beautiful setting made this a special experience. Can’t wait to return!

Stopped for one night walking the Coast Path. Absolutely excellent hotel in a great location. Very large, lovely, very clean room. Absolutely first class food both in the evening and breakfast. Expensive but worth it. Dog friendly, which is nice for this type of hotel.

Yelp
Cute hotel in a small town. Their heart is in the right place but execution is rough around the edges. Housekeeping was notably bad (towels purposely left on ground were re-hung rather than replaced, etc.). The reception and dining room staff were all friendly and helpful, although one staff member in particular was a bit of a klutz and overly excitable... there were frequent clashes and bangs from him rushing around and dropping silverware. The food was great!

Yelp
We loved our stay at the Lugger! Cute little marina in Portloe and a fun trip down narrow roads to get there! Definitely quiet and secluded. We enjoyed the included breakfasts and also the additional dinners. Great menu, with some changed entres the 2nd night. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We also enjoyed hiking around the hotel on the cliffs and paths! The room was comfortable with nice amenities. There was a small tv, but we never even turned it on. Too much to do outside! Complimentary hit chocolate in the evenings was a nice touch, too! We'll be back!
