A Critic Thinks Fulton Market’s Aba is the Hottest Restaurant of the Summer - Eater Chicago

"The Lunchroom, located inside Space 519, delivers a 'noteworthy' midday meal. Joanne Trestrail calls the asparagus soup 'lovely' and praises the salads for being 'thoughtfully composed, mixing flavors and textures in a way we wish more places would emulate.' The Bangkok Bowl is a 'substantial and boldly spicy mélange of chicken, fried shallots, soft-boiled egg and peanuts over jasmine rice' and among sandwiches, a mayo-less tuna melt 'keep[s] things interesting' with Kalamata tapenade, dill, and havarti cheese." - Jeffy Mai

It is a very nice place. For sure, you will not be disappointed when stopping there when walking around Chicago. You can find friendly team and good plates. Drinks are amazing and you can try great coffee.

My experience at The Lunchroom was elevated by the exceptional service provided by Drew M. From the moment we arrived, Drew’s warm demeanor and impeccable interpersonal skills set the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. His attention to detail, personalized recommendations, and genuine enthusiasm created a welcoming atmosphere. The Lunchroom itself is a unique gem, offering a blend of inviting ambiance and creative cuisine, but Drew’s outstanding customer service truly set it apart. He effortlessly balanced professionalism with a friendly touch, ensuring every aspect of our meal was perfect. It’s rare to encounter someone who genuinely enhances the dining experience, but Drew M. did exactly that. Highly recommend and will recommend to my friends!

I'm in town visiting Chicago for a conference and stopped by for a quick lunch. Kira and Saad were quick and helpful with service. I ordered the Gold Coast Tuna melt. The presentation was actually beautiful. The food didn't take too long and was delicious. There's also a small shopping space which has cute clothes and knick knacks while you wait or after you eat. Ill return and I Highly recommend!

I’m a regular here, but honestly I can’t give 5 stars. I have dined in and bought stuff from the bakery multiple times. The atmosphere is very chic and intimate yet still has a casual feeling. The cafe is within a boutique. You can feel the passion and effort the owner put in down to the little details, which I appreciate. The pastries are made fresh there everyday. I love their almond croissants. The food is expensive for what you get but it’s always well done and tasty and the setting is nice in a good location. It’s also good to support small, local businesses. However, I don’t like dining in because there were a number of times that I thought the waiters were a little snooty. For example, I dined in recently as a treat and asked a few questions at the end of my meal about a take-out container, the promotion, and payment. I’m a pretty low-key customer who just wants to eat and go and don’t like wasting people’s time. I didn’t think I asked that many questions and thought they were all reasonable. The waiter, who was a tall man with dark hair and glasses, politely answered them but because the setting was pretty small, I could hear him quietly complaining about me to his coworkers from across room even though multiple tables were filled. I felt extremely uncomfortable and was deeply offended. It pretty much ruined my whole morning. I almost left a $0 tip but still gave the standard 15%. If this was a one-off thing then I wouldn’t even mention it. However, I’ve had multiple lackluster dining experiences like this here. Just because I’m not an old rich lady with deep pockets doesn’t mean I’m a less valuable customer. I buy the same food, tip the same as everyone else, and leave relatively quickly compared to other people who take their time to sit around and converse. Waiters should expect to answer customers’ questions as part of the job and not look down on people. I’ll still get their pastries and coffee to-go but I wont dine in again nor recommend colleagues to come here.

Google
We found this recommendation through the NY Times, and I'm so glad we went! Despite the busy lunch hour, the staff accommodated us. They were so friendly and attentive, even providing us with directions to use the metra and find a museum we wanted to see. My salad and matcha latte were absolutely delicious. I could tell they use high quality ingredients. Thank you to the staff for going above and beyond!

Google
We spontaneously stopped in to this cute little hidden gem to kill some time, decided to have a small bite. We had been here a few times previously checking out the unusual gifts, and clothing, but never to eat. My husband and I each had a soup which was delicious and after reading through the menu, we will definitely be back for some thing other than just soup. I highly recommend. This might become our new little hidden, local hideout.

Google
Had reservations. Did paid-street parking a few blocks away. This is on the ground floor of the Seneca building. We had the Farm table Burrata, Bangkok bowl and coffee. Everything was delicious. Also loved the decor and plants. Well, then why is this not a 5 star? There is only about 12 tables in total, and we still had to wait about 15 mins for our server to come back, so we could ask for to-go boxes and the check.

Yelp
This is such a cool restaurant! The Lunchroom is located in the back of a boutique and is the perfect place to catch up with friends over a casual but sophisticated meal. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla with an oat milk latte. Both were exceptional but this may have been the best breakfast quesadilla I have ever had. The service was super friendly, didn't mind that our breakfast spanned a long time. Also, it was cool seeing all the neat items the store sold from our table. Overall, I highly recommend the Lunchroom and this will be added to my usual rotation for breakfast / lunch.

Yelp
SPACE519 is a cozy and stylish place--perfect for a relaxed lunch with friends or a solo salad-and-coffee kind of afternoon. The menu leans toward fresh and healthy, with salads and light plates that are satisfying, though not particularly mind-blowing. Still, everything tasted fine and the service was upbeat and attentive, which added to the overall vibe. What makes this spot stand out is the curated retail area attached to the café--think Neiman Marcus-style pieces, from fashion to gifts--which you can browse while waiting for your food. Great for a casual yet elevated daytime outing.

Yelp
So delicate classy place ! The waiters and hostess were friendly and warm . There weren't rushing you . The food was melting in our mouths! Loved the potato salad ! Didn't have room for desert but it looked delicious. The latte and tea with honey were perfect. There are stairs to go up into the resturant. The shop is really classic . They hang up your coats . Make a reservation . Charlie and Drew were great No sur charge tips gratuity on 5 or more

Yelp
Great food and service. Hostess and server were welcoming and accommodated my need to sit with my best friend and then bail for the airport with some food and good coffee!

Yelp
I recently stumbled upon a hidden gem that combines my favorite things - a cute cafe in an apothecary store. From the moment you step inside, you are welcomed with an apothecary with the modern appeal of a trendy café. I went there for a late brunch with a friend. And we ordered Avocado toast, Bangkok bowl, Cappuccino and Chaider tea. The tea has apple cider (which is quite healthy) but a bit too sweet for our taste and it was a part of a special menu. The star of the show, of course, is the Bangkok bowl. Even though on the menu it says SPICY. It wasn't spicy. Everything blended togther so well and nothing was overpowering. The chunky peanuts were adding it to the flavor. It was served with lime wedge which we didn't need to use as it was perfectly flavorful already. I can't help but sing praises for their avocado toast. The toast is perfectly toasted, with just the right amount of crunch, and the avocado spread is generously creamy, and they used the most perfectly ripen avocados. It was a bit on the expensive side as the cost was $20.95. But what truly sets this place apart is the apothecary element. The store boasts a wide range of herbs, teas, candles, skincare, stationary, and wellness products. Might add some therapeutic dimension to your visit. The service was overall satisfactory, with an attentive staff. Overall I will recommend The Lunchroom. Whether you're seeking a delicious brunch or natural remedies to enhance your well-being, this place offers the best of both worlds.

Yelp
This place is super chic inside and a great one-stop shop to browse the store, grab a coffee or bite, or sit down for a meal. The patio is lovely especially on a sunny day. But honestly it was a weird vibe at first. After we were seated outside, I noticed that the staff were spending more time at other tables explaining the menu and such but kind of being standoffish towards us. They also didn't offer water or anything for my tired, thirsty puppy, which is a first. It got the job done though.. I forgot about the weird vibes for a while when the food arrived though. I ordered the avocado toast club sandwich. It was on perfectly crusty bread with fresh chicken breast, bacon, avocado, Mayo, and tomato. It was yummy and filling, but I wish it had a more flavorful sauce like a Chipotle, aioli, or pesto though. I appreciated the flavorful watermelon salad on the side. My boyfriend ordered the multigrain pancakes, which were like homemade with the hint of cinnamon.

Yelp
Perfect place for lunch! Service was good and the food came out fast. The avocado toast sandwich was great! The restaurant itself was cute and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the mag mile.

Yelp
Food (5/5): - We ordered the Carolina bbq chicken flatbread and the avocado toast club. I also ordered an iced latte with oat milk - Carolina bbq chicken flatbread was delicious and generously portioned. I loved the tangy flavor of the bbq sauce, especially when paired with the cheese and red onions sprinkled on top. I would say it is shareable between two people. - Avocado toast club sandwich was also really delicious and refreshing. The avocado was so nicely creamy and refreshing. The bacon, chicken, and tomatoes complemented the avocado well. In terms of portioning, I would say it is best suited for only one person. - Iced latte was pretty standard. Nothing too special but I did enjoy the creaminess of it Service (5/5): - It seemed that they were a bit understaffed but our server did his best and seemed apologetic when mistakes occurred. Overall, I have no complaints and thought they did a great job Ambiance (5/5): - Very aesthetic restaurant. They have an store right next to the dining area where you can buy a bunch of special food items - Great for brunch with friends - I don't think I would bring a date here as it doesn't feel as intimate. It is very aesthetic though

Yelp
Cute breakfast spot right in the middle of a shop! This is in the Streeterville/ Gold Coast area. A little pricey (for breakfast) but very tasty. Recommend the pastry sampler as your starter! You can shop when you've finished your meal. Service is great and attentive. Recommend you put in a reservation #chicago #breakfast #brunch

Yelp
Went out for a Friday lunch with friends to the Lunchroom. The space is very cute with the clothing area on the side, so I thought it was a fun, interesting concept- almost like a hidden gem in the area. I can't say I ordered too much, just one dish which was the Fall special. A brie and apple butter sandwich with brussel sprouts on the side. I would never get this dish again- I thought it lacked so much flavor and the side too was not tasty. I think it'd be better with actual apples and one extra cheese. I also noticed how steep the prices were on the menu for some very simple items. I likely wouldn't return here given this experience, but recommend others check it out to see for themselves!

Yelp
Clean and bright space invites you in to dine on cafe style dishes. Avocado toast club was delicious and service was good. Did not try any sweets, but they looked good. While slightly pricey, it may not be an everyday lunch spot, but it's a nice treat yourself spot!

Christin G.

Yelp
I had the mushroom and wild rice soup and it was amazing! I also ordered the Asian salad and a vanilla latte. Delicious. The staff here are so friendly and quirky. I really enjoyed this brunch and the shop is gorgeous too!

Yelp
Written to "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" by Belinda Carlisle Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth? Ooh, The Lunchroom is a space on Earth They say for brunch, grub comes first We'll take two French 75's to quench our thirst Ooh, I can't believe what I've unearthed! When the temps drop down I need something warm to wrap around At Space 319, I've arrived With an astounding curation of things inside When you walk into the room Sit right down, and peruse the food Breakfast Quesadilla or Tuna melt? I can't decide, a feud ensued Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth? Ooh, The Lunchroom is a retreat on Earth

Yelp
Love it here! Great ambience, amazing clothing, the cafe has the best breakfast pastries and coffee. Love living next to space 519

Yelp
We stopped in to get a few to go items. After we purchased we thought about sitting in the dining area and was told by slightly pretentious cashier in the front that the restaurant doesn't allow this. While I understand the theory behind this I think exceptions need to be made. We were there at a non busy time. There were plenty of seats open upstairs and our purchase was almost $40. The cinnamon rolls cream cheese frosting was good but the roll itself was extremely dry. The zucchini and kale muffin was the best item out of the 6 different items we tried. I was also told they do not serve decaf espresso

Kathy L W.

Yelp
The avocado toast was absolute perfection. I would like to praise two very important people at this establishment for the exceptional service I received from both Lily and Charlie. I will certainly return many times just because of their very engaging and awesome personalities. The ambiance is exceptional if you want great food and want to also shop for delightful items that dare to be different. Thank you for a lovely brunch and shopping experience.

Yelp
We made a lunch reservation for restaurant week. Upon being seated we were greeted by a waiter that was clearly so uncomfortable interacting with people. I must admit I was relieved when a different, more confident & clear speaking, person came to the table. This person informed us that all 3 of us dining had to order from the restaurant week menu or none of us could order off that menu. When we quietly & politely objected they said that all restaurant week places do that. We disagree and have been to numerous restaurants during RW that allow fewer than the entire party to order off the RW menu. My 94 year old mother asked if she should go sit at her own table because she wanted to order off the regular menu while my husband and I wanted the RW selections. This person then reluctantly allowed our request. My mother noticed that this person as well as other staff were unsmiling, scowling, and in general unfriendly. All of our choices tasted good but were wildly overpriced.

Sam M.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the Gold Coast, very unassuming as you walk by. I was greeted with the best personality ever. happened to get a little bit of everything a few croissants some quiche and a sandwich. I I could list all sorts of adjectives describing this great place at the point is you should go. Great food great people.

Yelp
Great place for a tasty quick bite! Highly recommend the shrimp and grits. Reservations recommended if you want to dine outside

Yelp
Service was amazing!! We all loved our food. That said I loved the watermelon gazpacho My friend less so. But we both loved our shared salad nicoise. Two of our friends had the Bangkok bowl and loved it. And other friend had tuna sandwich which was a hit. Only open at lunch but truly great to take advantage of.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with a girlfriend . This is next door to the Seneca hotel , they have a cute gift shop and clothing as well . They have vegetarian and vegan friendly items on the menu . The matcha green tea latte with oat milk is delicious !

Dinesh R.

Yelp
The flatbread was average but the tofu rice dish was tasty (could use more vegan options).

Pat N.

Yelp
Several options (omelettes, pastries, pancake, French toast) were flavorful and prepared with the freshest ingredients. Cozy setting in a unique boutique; attentive service from the host and staff.

Yelp
I enjoyed an al fresco birthday lunch for my daughter in law at The Lunchroom. It was my family's first visit and my second. I have been to the boutique several times and hand lunch twice. Even if you aren't hungry while shopping, you can always have a coffee or glass of wine. On this occasion, we dined during the weekend brunch. The sidewalk cafe was bustling and our server was quite busy. As a true professional, she was super friendly and very attentive. She was warm and gracious and overheard we were celebrating a birthday. She brought over peach almond pie for the birthday girl. It was a very nice gesture. The lattes are rich and creamy. We also had French Toast, Avocado Toast and a salad. We loved everything. My salad was dressed with Caper Vinaigrette. My son's French Toast had peanut butter and Nutella. My daughter in law's Avocado Toast was fresh with a ton of avocado. The black and white striped cushions and umbrellas give a mid century modern vibe. It was fantastic to sit and people watch. The Magnificent Mile neighborhood tucked away behind Water Tower Place is filled with fun characters. Space 519 The Lunchroom is the perfect place for a latte, coffee, quick meal or a special occasion stop. It feels a bit unique because of the neighborhood and boutique location.

M. C.

Yelp
I have been a customer since day one and have welcomed them to the neighborhood. I also met one of the owners who was very enthusiastic about opening the business here. This is the first time I have written a review about this place. So it's a combination of today's and my past experiences . It's the only place left in this part of the Steeterville neighborhood that has patio dining post- Pandemic lockdown. I was a reliable take out order customer during the lockdown. Although things have always been a bit on the pricy side, they have never made the quality suffer. Everything has always been fresh and tasty. Today I stopped in around 1:30 pm and sat at the patio while enjoying the Chicken tortilla soup and side kale salad. I have to agree with another reviewer, the times I sat inside, I felt cramped and conversation volumes can get pretty loud. Another thing I noticed, and this was even before the Pandemic is that the staff although very polite, always seem frazzled, like maybe always there has not been enough staff or too many calling in to say they can't work? My server today seemed very frazzled and probably had too many guests to take care of. He was polite and I gave him a good tip. No chit-chat with me or any of the other customers for that matter, just take the order, bring the food, and bring the check, period! Overall, it's a nice place that has been able to maintain qualty. You should give it a try.

Yelp
Outstanding staff, superb food! Such a unique, beautiful and comfortable place you always want to come back to.

Shiho C.

Yelp
I was impressed by the freshness of the ingredients. I ordered Avocado BLT, and my husband had the avocado toast. They served generous amounts of avocado, and the tomato was sweet and delicious. It is a little expensive side for breakfast, but I think the quality is worth it.
google avatar

Nadia V.

Yelp
Super cute neighborhood spot!! The Paloma was delish but the food was also very good. The tortilla soup is the bomb and it even has pozole which is a nice addition. The avocado toast was also excellent. Come here for brunch, just within walking distance of the lake and off Michigan Ave.
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
My friend brought me to this little gem of a spot. It's part cafe, part boutique. I appreciate when simple things are done really well. And this place accomplishes that. Lots of great healthy options and the Turkish coffee was sooo good.
google avatar

Nabil A.

Yelp
I know some may consider this place to be on the pricey side. But their eggs and grits southwest style are to die for. They typically have it with bacon, but I substitute avocado instead. The bed of grits are phenomenal, the runny yolk with sauce is exquisite, and the toasted bread with butter and jam is the perfect combination. It's one of those meals you want to last forever. I also love the cappuccino, one of the best in town IMHO. The owner is also quite kind and the newly hired staff are quite amazing! Hands down, my favorite breakfast meal in Chicago (and I'm known to be the foodie in my circles). Bon Appetit!

Yelp
Discovered The Lunchroom for a lunch deal for Chicago Restaurant Week. It was a cafe located within the shop. Service was great. I got Green and White salad, beach Baja taco, and one of each dessert. Salad vinaigrette said zesty citrus. If you like the flavor, you'd like the salad. The pumpkin seeds, apple splices, shaved Brussels sprouts was so delicious! Then came my entree. I was a bit disappointed with the Baja beach taco, but the salsa has a nice kick to it, but it was ok. I wish I ordered The Good Karma Fried Chicken Sandwich because 2 of my dining mates and it... and no joke so good! Pimento biscuit, honey drizzle, buttermilk braised.. wow. It was so good! As far as the dessert, between the 3 of us, we ordered 1 of each: mini cookie ice cream duo, guilt free parfait, and salted caramel brownie tart. I really enjoyed my ice cream cookie. I'd return even without Chicago restaurant week deal. And talk about that coffee mart. Matcha latte was so good & pretty!

Elise K.

Yelp
This truly is the best lunch spot in the city. BEST SALAD with the MOST FRESH ingredients wow. Definitely try Space you will love it!!

Chris L.

Yelp
We've been here at least a dozen times time--boy do they serve up some great food and provide casual yet attentive service. Took a few friends for brunch/lunch, everyone loved their meal. We shared the burrata and the queso, amazing. I had my favorite, the apple and brie toast and cheese with the Brussels sprout hash. Did a little holiday shopping while there too! Don't miss their great retail wine selection! #perfection

Yelp
AMAZING spot!! One of the best boutiques anywhere in the world. The owner is always there which ensures an exceptional experience. The vibe is markedly inclusive and warm. The clothing, decor, and food are truly unparalleled. Be sure to grab a nosh at the Lunchroom too!

Yelp
7 degrees out and my friend needed to be outside. Waiter was so nice accommodating. Cleaned the table and gave us 2 heat lamps. Food was delicious and hippy waiter gave us the best service. If I lived right by this place I would go every week.

Yelp
This place is the perfect brunch spot ever. Staff were fabulous, fast and friendly and the food was fuego. A bit pricey for us working class folks, but if you're into treating yourself and those you love, Space 519 is a safe bet. Mahi Tacos And Avacado Toast are an excellent choice, if you're in need of a recommendation.

DD R.

Yelp
Super cute place for eating outside. Fast prep for take out in my experience. Really enjoyed the menu- kale and cote salads both very fresh, I don't even enjoy raisins but didn't mind then in the kale salad. Tacos were decent, well cooked fish (not over), and comes with sides that are actually worth eating. In general, cooking was not too heavy on salt and oils. As far as restaurant food goes this is a healthy option that I could eat at multiple days in a row.

Mrs. F.

Yelp
Having been at Space 519 several times, I finally decided to write a review. The food is below average in terms of quality, presentation, and quantity. For example, the flatbread is hard and stale, and the toppings are stingy and poorly coordinated. Salads are expensive and over-dressed. Chairs are too close together and uncomfortable because they are cheap. The wait staff loves regular customers, but not others. It's a pretentious place, with arrogant staff and sky-high prices. Go to Francesca's or Cafecito, enjoy the food and relax.
google avatar

Liz H.

Yelp
I went to the Lunchroom because I had received a gift card. There is outside dining but on a weekend afternoon the wait is long. At the cashier's stand their was a basket of French baguettes so I became very excited. I love fresh bread. However, the sandwiches are pre-made. I ordered the egg salad on white. I was hoping for French white but I got Wonderbread white. The sandwich was okay. I'm not an egg salad aficionado as I have only had it three times. I can say, it was not as good as the second time. I would on go back for a baguette or a dessert.
google avatar

Bitty B.

Yelp
My tuna melt was delicious albeit a little small for $19, but the service was bad. Ordered cocktails & got food before drinks, plus food took a long time. My friend had too much dressing on her salad too. Our waiter just wasn't attentive.
google avatar

Vicky M.

Yelp
I came in for a late lunch one Sunday to dine in and do a little shopping since I live around the nieghborhood. The Lunchroom was so tiny and I felt too squeezed in with very little space between the other table. I ordered the California Kale salad and seasonal soup but Kale tasted withered and old and the soup came out cold. I was very disappointed. I also asked if the food was non gmo and organic considering the prices but the server couldn't answer. I then went to shop. The whole place was overpriced and dated. Not one piece of clothing stood out to me and the clothes had an aroma of burrata cheese. I was very put off. I will not be back.
google avatar

Rachelle W.

Yelp
Garbage. Over priced, doesn't split checks, they're $20 dip was literally just cheese and ground beef. I'm blown away that this business is able to stay open. Trash, limited menu, as well as one of our party members getting food poisoning. Save your money.
google avatar

Yelp
Phenomenal atmosphere, excellent food, and great service. Can you really ask for more? I was staying around the corner and was on my way to get my car from the self parking garage when I stumbled upon this great little place! The Avocado Toast Club was a great way to kick off my afternoon, the bread was amazing, Nueske's bacon is one of my favorite things ever, and the avocado spread was perfect. This dish was complimented by a great watermelon, mint, and feta salad, which was so refreshing and perfect for the warm summer day. Finally, I can't resist bread pudding on a dessert menu (and calories don't count on vacation, right?), so I gave their Croissant Bread Pudding a shot and boy was I happy. It comes in a mini-skillet, piping hot, smothered in bourbon caramel sauce, and topped with a pad of fresh butter. Needless to say, I didn't feel a need to eat for the rest of the day! Service was great, Doug was great to talk to, and he gave me some pointers about other restaurants in the area for dinner which I truly appreciated. I'll be back for sure!

Yelp
One of the nicest experiences- top service - love the curated design shop / restaurant concept. Our Brunch was top notch!

Yelp
A great place in the neighborhood for coffee or lunch during the week, and brunch over the weekend. The ambience is refreshing, and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend paying these guys a visit if in the area!

Yelp
I really had a generally nice experience this afternoon. The young guy with the glasses was very nice despite being rather busy pouring wine and rushing in and out. The place was very busy, but the time to get my meal was quick. No complaints there. I had the Bangkok bowl. It was fine. I can't say almost $30.00 nice however. I live a block away and I wish it wasn't so pricey. I would come all the time in a second. I just want something quick and reasonably priced sometimes. So many other options within a few blocks in that general price range that do it better. It would be nice if they had a descent 10-12 dollar meal.

Yelp
Quaint place with amazing coffees (Turkish coffee was delightful), and their avocado toast was the best I've had whilst traveling.
