The Macallan and Roka Akor Will Open a Tasting Menu Restaurant Highlighting Scotch - Eater Chicago

"Roka Akor, the Japanese-style restaurant chain known for sushi and steak, has partnered with The Macallan – one of the world’s best-known Scotch distilleries – for an unusual dining and drinking experience in River North. The M Room is touted as The Macallan’s first permanent location, offering food and rare Scotch with a 10-course menu that cross pollinates executive chef Ce Bian’s Japanese culinary influences with the flavors and ingredients that are central to the whisky making process." - Naomi Waxman

The M Room's prefix 9-course totally exceeded our expectation. At our table we ordered both the regular and vegetarian versions, and both are equally good. The wine pairing was excellent (except personally I'm not a sake and port fan). The cocktails are all made very fancy with a lot of thought put into the design of ice cubes and their presentation. Highly recommend it! We would go as far as saying, it's better than the starred restaurant in the city. (The only downside for our experience was that the serving time was 4.5 hours due to being shorthanded in the kitchen that night, but the wait staff were very friendly and knowledgable regardless.)

I went closer to when they opened to celebrate a new promotion. The service was amazing. The team worked together to keep my and my SO taken care of, but the highlight for me was their knowledge of the drinks at the bar. I had a great time talking about the bottles and how they were acquired with the bartender. Also, when I went they didn't have a vegetarian menu listed, but the chef was happy to accomadate my dieter restrictions. He outdid himself and made sure both of us had a great time. I believe the same veg menu is now listed on the website. I had a lot of fun ordering the M flight as well, and being told I was the first to do so! Will definitely be returning soon!

Don't know where to start about our dining experience! The food, cocktails and wine are fantastic, each course just kept getting better and better. The pairings of cocktails and wine went perfectly with every course. Can't wait to go back, highly recommend!

I went to this place because the ad in FB. it’s 9 courses. I didn’t realize that it’s a Mccallan whiskey place. but it’s not bothering me at all. most dishes like sauce made from Mccallan. A couple first dishes are just ok, just a little disappointed but the art on it was great. I got spoiled a lot from another good restaurants maybe. The rest of the course it’s better and good. Cocktails are fancy and tasty. Our server is great but maybe a little too much on up selling drinks. the ice cream is really good.

My boyfriend and I did the 7-course tasting menu, and it was an incredible experience, from start to finish! Everything was presented flawlessly, and so delicious! Special thanks to the manager, William, and our server, Yura for taking such great care of us! Highly recommended getting their specialty cocktails, “Boulevardier I Do” and “Gold Rush Leads to Penicillin.” Looking forward to returning to The M Room soon!

Came here for my brother’s birthday and the host was very accommodating in our requests. The ambiance was great and the servers did a great job. Everyone at the table had the 7 course tasting menu and a few had the beverage pairings. After the amuse bouche and first course, we were given a family-style dish of tuna sashimi and wagyu tataki that was unfortunately miscounted. After informing the staff (as there were not 2 pieces a person, per item), the front of house manager told us we were wrong, and what the chef gave us was what we get. We (of course)let our phones eat first and showed them the evidence. The count was wrong and the kitchen refused to accommodate when the servers did their best to also help the table. The seafood dishes were fantastic (especially the scallop course!!) but the meal took a sour turn at the Wellington. The pastry was raw in the middle, and again after notifying the waiter, they informed us ”the chef states that the Wellington was in the oven for 25 min so it’s perfect.” I had to peel back the first layer of pastry to show a doughy, glistening mess. This is when the server chose to take it back and show the chef. After that not a peep came from the kitchen. I think the servers throughout the process were fantastic. The front of house manager in the grey suit needs to be fired. The kitchen needs better quality checks before sending food out. The mocktails were the best by far on the drink side, but the pairing was a more acquired taste. Some were quite heavy, but still very well done. Hope they can be better.

When you have only one reservation for 3 people and there are exactly 3 people showing up you don't offer to sit them at the bar. Some dishes were presented when not all people were at the table and even though they promised they will present again it never happened. In an empty restaurant it shows lack of care for guests who leave over 500 dollars at a table of 3.p Decent collaboration between roka akor and macallan.

An unforgettable experience for Macallan fans, or any whisky enthusiast. Only one of several M rooms in the world, boasting an impressive collection of rare Macalan bottlings, annual editions and regular line mainstays. Delicious and elegant food pairings from next-door Roca Acor, designed to pair with The Macallan. Bet friendly and knowledgeable staff, adding to the memorable experience.

Yelp
Valentine's Dinner at M Room! We walked out without saying anything to the manager because another wasted second of our evening would be over the top. The food was great. Our server was great. What was awful was the length of our meal. 7pm reservation, we left at 1115pm. 4 hour meal. It's probably the longest, most painful meal of my entire 58 yeatts of my life!!!! Guests came and left during g 4 hours. I said nothing because my husband made the reservation, and we were trying something new. We love aroka Akor and have been dining there for over 12 years. I didn't want to take away from. His effort, nor did I want a lame excuse or looking for any freebies! 4 hours for a prefixed menu is unacceptable! What is the last jab was the $16 dollar valet... we were charged $24 because we were there for over 4 hours. Oh, the irony!!!!

Yelp
Overall, the M Room suffers from amateurish execution and fails to live up to the standards set by competitors in its segment. I do not recommend them to anyone, nor do I plan to return. I went here with my wife towards the end of January to celebrate my birthday -- what could go wrong with a tasting menu crafted to reflect the process of making the (delicious) eponymous whisky? A lot, as it turns out, but let's begin with what went well: the cocktails! ...or their flavors, at least. We sprung for the cocktail pairings for $140pp, which buys you one half-portion cocktail for each of the 9 plates. The presentation, flavor and cohesion with the dishes with which they were served aligned with my expectations. Well south of, say, the Aviary or even Violet Hour, but better than your average Chicago steakhouse. I would order any of them as a solo drink and be happy with it. Unfortunately, the pairings and flavors were only acceptable in isolation, falling apart in the greater context of the entire 9 course meal. We found it impossible to drink them quickly enough before the next course arrived, slowly accumulating a table-filling pile of increasingly watery and out of context drinks that we could not down quickly enough. As far as the food is concerned, the M Room is a failure on every dimension. At this price point, you're competing with the likes of Oriole, Schwa, Next, Moody Tongue, etc. and you'd better be clearly better than, say, Sepia. Unfortunately for this restaurant, they're less of a legitimate competitor in this field and more of a delusional walk-on hopeful. The progression and pacing of the menu is nonsensical -- we'd receive a delicate seafood dish that can be consumed in seconds followed 10 minutes later by a savory dish that requires more time to eat, only to be interrupted by the next dish coming out before we could appropriately enjoy it. The Wellington, clearly intended to be the centerpiece of the menu, was improperly butchered. One end was about 70% of the width of the middle, resulting in an uneven temperature throughout. There was also a massive pile of duxelles rolled up on that end, but not enough in the middle. Again, this kind of amateur mistake simply does not happen at competing restaurants. Similar execution problems abound with the service. The restaurant fails to realize their goal of having servers float among sections to keep the process consistent. Instead, I felt suffocated by about two dozen unnecessary trips, one of which had the server -- without asking -- messing with the brightness of the (admittedly very cool) table light that I had just turned down. Their descriptions of the dishes, of all things, were among the worst I've ever seen for a complex tasting menu. Wrong and later corrected, unconfident, rushed and generally lacking in polish or professionalism. Fortunately, they did seem friendly and accommodating. A for effort; I still left a $200 tip. Overall, just save yourselves from the disappointment and avoid this failed experiment.

Yelp
The vibe of this place was very quiet and intimate. Had my first beef Wellington here! Wagyu beef at that! We also had short ribs which were to die for. Unfortunately I forgot to take a pic of the short ribs but I highly recommend!

Yelp
I am a huge fan of tasting menus and I love whisky. This spot combined the best of both worlds! I had the nine course tasting menu with The Macallan whisky pairing. Not only were the courses delicious but some of them provided some theatrics table side. Now this spot is expensive, but it's also sexy and is the perfect place to go for a special occasion. I love how they explained each dish and each whisky. Definitely an experience to remember.

Yelp
Old review, backing to last new years. I was doing a solo new years last year and decided to go on a beer and tapa frenzy. I randomly walked into here after going to green smoked meats for a beer, and this was so amazing. I wanted to reassess this dish bc I came in 8/10 belligerent, but I looked on their menu and I didn't see it. Some things aren't mean to last forever, they should be cherished in the moment I hope the day comes when it comes back, it was 10/10. Beer was standard. Workers were kind and friendly, they were making jokes w me. I'll give them a 4/5 star rating bc I liked the dish so much, but I need to come back to try the main entrees.

Yelp
Amazing service provided by Jae! He served each course with wonderful knowledge of each dish and also provided great cocktail recommendations (M goes with T is our favorite). The dining room had a great atmosphere and ambiance. Highlight of the dinner would have to be the roasted chilean sea bass and wagyu tataki. As I bite into a cut-up piece of the sea bass, it let out all this flavorful juices that was savory. For the wagyu tataki, the wagyu was flavorful by itself and was complemented by the truffle. Overall, I would highly recommend this place! Great for a date night, and the courses start off light but gets heavier later so expect to be full by the end of it.

Yelp
Great experince! Service is unmatched. The whole team really cares about your experience. The quality of the fish and the beef that was provided was top notch. Very innovative with all dishes incorporating Macallan in some way! Every course creates some excitement and the beverage pairings put together with so much attention to detail, including a story being attached to it. Wagyu filet tartare with rice tuile was seasoned so well without overpowering what is expected from the beef to deliver, toro and wagyu side by side was very entertaining with yeast and barley, and the seabass was out of this world with the ginger charred cask oil. M Room is setting the bar high, one of the best meals I had in Chicago for a while. Can't wait to return and not hesitating to recommending it to anyone looking for a wonderful experince!

Yelp
I would like to tell you of one of the finest evenings I've had in my life! I'm a big Macallan fan, and have been most of my life. The idea of having a meal specifically crafted to be paired with Macallan and Macallan based cocktails was something I was very interested in. I decided to have my 60th birthday at the M room with 2 other couples just before Christmas. I used to work in Chicago 10 years ago and this was great way to have a celebration with my dear friends. I email ahead of time to let the M Room know that I needed a few substitutions for the seafood courses, and the team handled this with no problem. The menu and pairings are likely to change, so I'm not going to go course by course, but will share some of the highlights: My single best bite was the Wagyu Tataki with Black Truffles. It was 2 bites actually, but amazing in subtle complexity. The best cocktail was the "Gold Rush leads to Penicillin", who would have thought that Macallan 15, Mezcal, Sherry and Lemon and would go so well together. My wife said all the seafood was good, but particularly liked the Toro Sashimi and the Seared Scallops. I enjoyed all the beef dishes, the Wagyu Filet Tartar was fabulous as was the final course of the American Wagyu Filet Wellington. Two non-Macallan highlights to the beverages included the 2018 Domaine Weinbach Cuvee Ste. Catherine Pinot Gris and the Daiginjo Sake. The best Macallan neat that I had was in addition to the pairing and was a Macallan Edition #1. While I had some of the other Editions previously, I had never had Edition #1 which is now quite a rare find. Edition No. 1 is matured in 8 unique European and American oak cask styles and sizes, each contributing their own distinct characteristics. Of those eight casks, seven are sherry and only one is American oak. It was a fantastic dram and a very rare opportunity to try a scotch this rare. The service at the M Room was impeccable, each course and pairing were nicely explained and at the end of the meal we got a copy of the menu of the courses that we had. A wonderful food and Macallan centric spirits experience that I recommend to anyone that has the ability to visit the M Room.

Yelp
This place is unreal! For some reason I did not expect the food and drink to knock it out of the park but this is just next level. Get your reservation* while you can because this place is going to get busy. FAST! *Highly recommend getting the whiskey pairing. You will not be disappointed

Yelp
Amazing experience and a must have for any serious wine and spirits aficionado! The wine pairings were lovely, but the spirits pairings were a true revelation! M Room is a great experience for food wine and service - an A List stop in Chicago.

Yelp
Excellent, well thought out menu. A scotch/whiskey lovers dream. We had the 9 course meal with cocktails pairing. The cocktails were stunning, delicious and complimentary to each dish. Our server was very kind and timed out everything nicely. Absolutely enjoTed start to finish. I cannot get back there soon enough. The room felt private and closed off to the loud Roka energy, making if feel energetic but loungy and relaxed. Go and treat yourself!!

Yelp
I had a wonderful experience at The M Room. The bartender Jason, manager and the servers made me feel like a VIP. While sitting at the bar I had the foie gras toast and scallop dish which were paired perfectly with Macallan highlighted cocktails. Although pricey, it would be a great place for a special occasion. I look forward to dining there again.

Yelp
Service is outstanding. We had the 9 course tasting menu and food was remarkable. It's a lovely restaurant, it's peaceful and you're set up to really have time to enjoy the food and scotch.

Yelp
There aren't enough good things to say about The M Room. Every detail was thought out so perfectly and seeing this concept come to love was exciting and equally as delicious. Our servers were great and their excitement for M Room was apparent throughout the service. Definitely looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
The experience was nothing short of exceptional. The service was perfection. The food and cocktail pairing is defiantly a "wow" experience. I would highly recommend checking this out, you will not be disappointed.
