"In a strip mall nestled between a grocery store and gas station lies the valley’s best (and only) taco shop. Vermont is not known for its Mexican food, but the Mad Taco stands out for anyone craving some spice. This casual local favourite has been pleasing hungry skiers and snowboarders since 2010, known for its tender smoked brisket and carnitas, slow-cooked in a smoker that sits in the parking lot. Diners can also enjoy an array of mouth-numbing salsas, filling burritos, and local beer on tap." - Heather Platt

Took my kids here for dinner on May 3 on our last day in VT. I got the chicken burrito bowl and my daughter got the beef tacos and we both devoured our food because it was so good. We will definitely be returning on our next trip.

We stopped in here this past winter while we were up in VT skiing at Sugarbush. The place was PACKED but we were lucky enough that everyone was super friendly and the wait wasn't too long. As soon as someone was done they offered their seats to the next group waiting. Food and sauces were excellent. Maybe would do take out next time to avoid the crowd but overall a great place to grab a bite to eat.

I can't say enough about the soup, I was expecting something warm. But, I got in my feels over this beautiful bowl of joy! Everything was delicious, the place was fun, the music made my soul happy, and the staff were a fun little bunch to listen to in the kitchen.

Every time we visit this area of Vermont we always stop here. The food is delicious and always so filling. The prices are amazing. I love that you can see the smoker working in the parking lot. The first time we came here I had the torta which was perfect. This time I ordered the Big Daddy Fatty I had no idea what to expect and I was blown away. Everyone around us asked what I had ordered because it looked that good. It tasted even better though! Their fajitas are also a favorite with my friend group! I can't wait to come up again and enjoy the food!

Google
Pretty good Taco place in the middle of town. They have a giant smoker/BBQ in the parking lot so they have good smoked pork. The belly was good, but the shoulder was very dry

Best smoked wings I’ve ever had. Staff was super friendly and made sure our dog had water on such a hot day. Great tap selection too.

We stopped by Mad Taco on a Sunday night during a long weekend, and the place was buzzing with energy. Despite how busy it was, the friendly employee behind the bar immediately set the tone with excellent service. Before we even ordered drinks, he kindly explained the wait time upfront, giving us the option to reconsider. His transparency and warm smile were much appreciated, and we assured him we were fine with the wait. He served us promptly, and we enjoyed two exceptional local beers while soaking in the electric vibe. Due to the crowds, we decided to switch our order to takeout, and the staff handled it effortlessly and without hesitation. A short time later, we were on our way back to our condo with our food in hand. The wings were cooked to perfection—crispy and seasoned just right. The tacos were absolutely loaded with fresh ingredients, and the proteins were cooked to perfection. Every bite was delicious! I can’t say enough great things about this place. From the friendly, efficient service to the fantastic food and beer, Mad Taco is a must-visit if you’re in the Mad River Valley. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a vibrant atmosphere, great drinks, and even better food.

Google
Perfect casual venue. Very helpful food order counter and so many dishes to try. Cubano sandwich, refried bean side #5 & #3 hot sauce and The Soup. The Soup was intense "as is". GET THE SOUP. The Cubano was solid. Robust. Not "pressed" and served. I kid you not. Full of flavor and thick. GET IT. Oh btw I (youngest of eight) and my parents sat twelve nightly at our dinner table. My family has dined in fourty-eight states, South America and Asia. I will be bringing my Wife, Child and self back to enjoy The Mad Taco again shortly. It is not perfect.....it is PERFECTION. We ♥️ Perfection.

Yelp
Mad Taco came to our rescue during our vacation when we needed a speedy takeout option, and boy, did they deliver! Their food was top-notch, bursting with flavor and made with fresh ingredients. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel welcome even though we were just passing through. If you're in need of a quick and delicious meal, Mad Taco is the place to go!

Ken L.

Yelp
Cute little place- would be four stars if it was a little less expensive or service was faster. The food is good but relatively small portions. The ambiance is funky, but we sat outside on one of the 4 benches. There are a few chairs as well, if you're just waiting to pick up a to-go order.

Shelby A.

Yelp
A must try if in the area! Has that small hole in the wall vibe but some of the best food in the area! Staff are extremely friendly and helpful! We ordered the carnitas and el pastor tacos and they were amazing! Each order is two very full tacos so be prepared to eat one and take the other home. You will not be disappointed by anything you order! If you're a hot sauce lover make sure to try their sauces. Be warned they do have a nice kick to them! We will definitely be back next season!

Gibson B.

Yelp
the food should be fed to the pigs the guy at the desk is rude and wouldn't give us cheese when we ordered it

Sarah H.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican food in a quaint atmosphere. Seating was limited but space opened up in the time it took for our food to be prepared. The house margarita was also delicious and not at all syrupy. Vegetarian seitan was a great option. The optional hot sauces are HOT! I like some spice but the one rated "5" out of 10 scale sauce was too spicy for me.

Beth J.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly and helpful. Small, hole in the wall with great food. It's a bit pricey, which we feel everything in Vermont has been. If you are expecting a clean, spacious restaurant, this is not the place for you. Definitely felt like walking in to a very old, dirty bar, cleanliness ... um, it's not here. But, the food is great. We tried the Slow Burn Tacos... I could have eaten a dozen of them! Very delicious! Kid had some type of Burrito and loved it . Definitely visit this place at least once, the food is good.

Ruby R.

Yelp
Nacho Mama's tacos & The best beer lineup in the world. five is perfect. Town is great. Food is good, especially if you're not too hungry although the rice "has stuff in it".

Jake G.

Yelp
Overpriced drinks and food for the type of service and presentation. Served over the counter at the bar with all our food in one pile in tinfoil and takeout containers. 15% gratuity automatically included for pretty much no service. I like to support local businesses but the pricing and the included gratuity is mendacious. Business owner proceeds to double down and lie... see response below.

Matthew O.

Yelp
The best tacos in Vermont But the chicken sandwich (?!?) is to absolutely die for. Take the kimchee home- it's that good

Ruth D.

Yelp
While visiting Warren, a friend recommended we come here for dinner. We didn't follow directions and came for a late breakfast. After spending far too much time deciding which of the options would be the best options to break our fast, we settled on chicken tacos and the yam tacos. There is outdoor seating, a small bar of seats by the ordering window for food, and more seats on the bar side of the establishment. It was a bit hot outside, so we sat under the covered walls across from the bar where it was much cooler. Good vibes, conversing locals, amazing food that came out fast. It's more than just a good taco place in Vermont! A water cooler of chilled water is near the bar for self service and you'll also find reusable flatware by the cooler.

Rita L.

Yelp
I stopped into their place as I was traveling around Vermont. The food was amazing! The place was pure hometown! And the service was great. Sean ( hope I spelled it the right way) was a great server/ bartender. He recommended a nice crisp Vt. Pilsner for this Jersey girl and even looked my map and gave me a few places to hit in the north east Kingdom (I didn't quite make it) Great place great ambiance nice road food thanks Sean and the woman who took over for you. Really sorry I forgot your name! Rita from NJ

Kiki B.

Yelp
Absolutely YES!!! What a great little place. Totally unpretentious. Big on flavor. The focus here is on the food! Best tacos this side of the Mississippi. We can't wait to go back and try more of the menu!

J B.

Yelp
Great food! Super friendly staff. Great fun ambiance. Pork and chicken are smoked right outside. Meat is so good and flavourful, not that fake liquid smoke taste. The taco sauces were great too! One thing I would do differently next time would be to order the guacamole on the side for my quesadilla. It was inside it and made it messy, and I don't like guacamole, so it wasn't for me. Definitely will be back!

Dennis M.

Yelp
Showed up 15 minutes before they were supposed to close. They stayed open, poured us beers, and the food came in a bit. The food was delicious and the beer perfect. Service was A++. If you need a bite to eat this is the place.

Brett F.

Yelp
Unique environment in Waitsfield, VT. A craft beer bar on one side and restaurant seating on the other. The food is on the "messy" street food side of Tex-Mex. We got a chorizo quesadilla, carnitas tacos, and a kids beef taco. The proportions were just not right. Everything was solid and you get a lot of food. A couple of things were a bit unexpected. We ordered chips and salsa. But we only got 4-5 5 inch "circle" chips that we had to break up when we got home. It didn't yield much. Typically you get a fair amount of chips at Tex mex places, but not here. Second, the kids tacos were literally overflowing with beef. So much so that I thought the cheese was forgotten, but I eventually saw it on the bottom, in negligent amounts. If I lived here, I would probably come to appreciate the sum of its parts, and would visit from time to time, but for a one-off visit, we were a bit disappointed.

Peter T.

Yelp
Incredible food! Atmosphere is really chill. It's mad expensive, but other than that I'm a frequenter! Let's gooo!

Clare Q.

Yelp
Came here with my family after watching the solar eclipse and loved it! Very casual spot with surprisingly great tacos. We all got different tacos, personally I can only speak to the shrimp tacos but my mom and sister loved their carnitas/pollo asado tacos. $16 for 2 tacos seemed expensive and we wondered if 2 tacos would be enough food, but it definitely was. The tacos were HUGE and had so many toppings, very generous and I did not even finish mine. The shrimp taco came with lots of pineapple and avocado salsa which I loved. They also have great homemade salsa on the side. It was very busy that day (to be expected) and the server let us know it would be a 25 minute wait which was accurate and we did not mind. Just keep in mind that it isn't a fast food spot but the tacos are worth the wait!

Jim D.

Yelp
I usually hive this place more stars ! But after last nites meal im saying they are terrible and the customer service sucks The was good i always get a slow burn with sauce never any issue. But last nites ( 1-24-24) was utterly terrible and way to spicey when i usually eat the whole thing . I couod only eat two and a half bites before succumbing to the excess spice some idiot cook put in there!!!!! I will never go there again after being up all in utter stomach pain thanks to this establishment!!!! I hope their management sees this !!!!! Cause im contacting an attorney and suing this place

L S.

Yelp
Love their tacos! Had the taco special with pork. Their meat is tender and full of flavor! $22 for 3 tacos that are filled with meat! 2 would have been enough! The taco bowl is filled with guac, fresh and usually you don't get that much in most places! Big portion full of meat! You would never think a small town would have great tacos, but you have to try it! They also have great drink options as outside seating. It's always crowded with locals several times I've been there. It's located in a strip mall, but ample parking and great view of the mountains. Friendly staff and they bring the meal packaged right to you so you can take your leftovers. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Nicole M.

Yelp
Came for some tacos after a day at the mountain. They hit the spot and were some of the best tacos I've had. My girlfriend got the fish and slow burn and as she states "They were overflowing with deliciousness. The perfect combination of sweet and spicy." I got the chorizo and carnitas. Both were packed with flavor. We've been to other mad tacos but this one definitely has been the best.

John O.

Yelp
This place is a staple. It's a must visit if it's your first time to the area. The prices have skyrocketed in the last year so I don't think it's a good value, but still worth a stop if only for nostalgia.

Matt S.

Yelp
Chaotic on winter Fridays (and most weekends these years) but the Big Daddy Fatty and a margarita are just about unbeatable. Burn off the calories with a walk all the way to the Canteen, too.

Lindsay E.

Yelp
10 out of 10, do not recommend. Right off the bat, the girl who was taking my order was super cold and unfriendly. Not willing to help answer my questions on protein offerings I was confused about. With the past experience of food taking a while to get, it took me 45 mins to get me food. I ended up finding it inside on the counter, went their working had brought out everyone else's orders. Annoyed, I went my car to eat a quick fajita. Opening up the food containers, I discovered I had gotten pork instead of my order of chicken. I went back to the restaurant, giving them the entire order I had to be fixed. 3 mins later I had arrived to my car and checked the order. They had given me a burrito instead of fajita wraps. For the second, I went back to the restaurant to fix the order. That's not it. The have me less than their usual serving of fajita wraps. At the point, I gave up. Foods good, but the service won't have me coming back at all. And it wasn't terribly busy.

Roger G.

Yelp
1st time in this part of VT. Stopped here for dinner on our first night . Atmosphere is amazing and workers are very nice and friendly! Got the burning pork tacos homemade they were phenomenal! My Wife got burrito and loved it! My my parents got the pork tacos and they also thought it was amazing and they live in Texas! Every thing is fresh, and it shows! Great selection of beers. A must stop and most likely will go her before I got back home.

Melissa K.

Yelp
Place was great! They have a take out side & an eat in side! Menus on the walls (food & drink) We stepped up, ordered, payed, got our drinks, found a place to sit, 10 minutes later we hear them calling our name! Burrito was delicious. Big daddy fatty was equally awesome!! Paper towels on the table, get your own silverware from the bin. Clean up your mess & your good! Place was pretty busy for a Sunday night!

David C.

Yelp
This place was great. Great service. Everyone was helpful. Community atmosphere. Food was spot on. Grabbed a table quickly. Ordered food and it came out quickly. Wings order feels huge and delicious. The star are the tacos.

Eleni M.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with my family after a day of skiing and we enjoyed this place. The fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and chips/guac are amazing and they have a great selection of other items as well. It has a very fun vibe to it with cool decorations, a variety of seating, and great service. They also have ice cream pints and a variety of beverages (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic) including a free water station. It's a great place to come with family/friends and I would definitely recommend coming here.

Moira S.

Yelp
Very generous-sized delicious tacos. The kimchi smoked pork was . This is a must-eat in the Mad River Valley.

Caitie B.

Yelp
Been coming here for years but didn't appreciate being hounded for tips on the phone for a pick up order I was placing. I understand it's COVID times, but it's hard times on everyone. 20% tips on pick up orders? Also big disappointment when first bite of the burrito is a big old piece of chicken bone. I was shocked. We will be taking a break from Mad Taco until the quality we have come know over the years returns.

Will M.

Yelp
Vacationing in Waitsfield with family and friends, how could we possibly resist a place with a name like this! Nestled in a small shopping plaza replete with meat smokers out front, the Mad Taco did not disappoint. Our party was enormous, with 11 people. Despite this fact, all the food came out promptly and was utterly delicious. If you find yourself in scenic Waitsfield Vermont, make haste to avail yourself of this deliciousness!

Ian L.

Yelp
The pork belly tacos and quesadillas were absolutely outstanding. Margaritas were above average. Service was great.

Anthony K.

Yelp
You have to come here if you're in the area. I'd give them 6 stars if possible. Casual atmosphere, good bar options, delicious tacos, and lucky enough to have tamales tonight. Keep up the great work Mad Taco team! Thank you

Dave J.

Yelp
Excellent tacos and burritos in Vermont- who knew? The giant smoker in the parking lot guides you to this tasty takeout, bar and patio spot. Go for Christmas on the sauce to maximize and plate

Diane M.

Yelp
Lovely hole in the wall. The pork belly taco was amazing. I normally don't like sweet with savory but we got the Pastor taco at the cashier's recommendation and it was really good. The pineapples were fresh tasting and paired well with the pork. Also, finally a place that has hot sauces that are really spicy! Both habanero sauces were great. Would go again if we're in the area.

Mark A.

Yelp
I ordered a pork belly burrito. About 10 people who ordered after me got their orders before I did. When I got my burrito, it was a refried bean burrito, no pork belly. It was fine, but the incongruous wait time and wrong order was disappointing.

Graham P.

Yelp
Honestly wasn't expecting this to live up to the local hype. Lived in LA for many years, and this is legit Mexican food in the green mountains! Fun hot sauces and really great ingredients, I liked the smoked chicken fajitas

Kristin V.

Yelp
Very dive-y. The staff was nice but the cleanliness of the restaurant did not inspire confidence. I saw a young woman walking in and out without any shoes at all and nothing was said to her. EXTREMELY overpriced for what you get -- which is overall mediocre. Seems like they have ok beer offerings, but it ends there. I got a chicken enchilada which was tiny. The beans were ice cold and the rice was soggy. Not worth it.

Maureen D.

Yelp
Everything we tried was excellent! Tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and margaritas! The kids really enjoyed the big chips, loved cracking them! We'll go back on next visit! Tacos and Lawson's!

J T.

Yelp
The best! Great staff, wonderful food. The pms e to go after skiing Loved this place!

Tracey T.

Yelp
I'm always down for a good taco in a new city! I was in Warren, VT for a girls trip and my friend recommended this place to us. When you walk in it's a little hectic as we were thinking we would get seated and then have our order taken. It didn't work like that. You stand in line, place your food and drink order, pay, get your silverware, napkins, sauces and head to the other side to find somewhere to sit. It was very crowded this night as this is one of the local hangouts. We found seats at the bar and enjoyed our drinks until the food came out. About the food ... we ordered guacamole and chips, beef tacos and chili for 2 of us. The other two ladies ordered guacamole and chips and their choice of tacos. The guacamole was very salty. I almost felt like they prepared it but forgot to mix it all together because once I stirred it up it wasn't as salty. I still think they could go a little easier on the salt. The beef tacos were delicious and I had no complaints there. The chili was not good at all. Way too many black beans and the taste was just weird. My other friends loved their tacos. The bartender was awesome and we had a lot of fun with him. He even photobombed our group picture which was hilarious!! Would I revisit this place ... of course I would. For the 3 stars I give this place, I would like to see if changes are made to the salt level of the guacamole and the chili needs work but we came for the tacos and they were fabulous!!! It's a great local hangout and stays packed but the tacos are definitely worth it.

Martha B.

Yelp
Have had Mad Toco many times over the years but never in their brick and mortar shop! So glad to finally find it and enjoy the experience!

Scott S.

Yelp
I landed in Burlington and headed south to meet up with the work group near Roxbury. It was cold and rainy so I decided to breakup the drive and grab some lunch. When I pulled up and saw the smoker in the parking lot I got a good feeling. I went with a slow burn burrito hold the cilantro. The burrito was a little on the lukewarm side but it tasted really good. I was pretty hungry so the temperature probably kept me from burning my mouth but still. I know I got the slow burn so it was a little extra but $20 for a burrito and a bottle of root beer seemed a little steep. There aren't many options in the area. Next time I'm around I'll give them another shot.

Ronny J.

Yelp
Loved the Cuban sandwich!!! There are two smokers outside. You can't miss it! Delicious!!!!!

Peter W.

Yelp
Always fun to go there. Always great ambience. Always great Mexican food. Always great Margaritas. Always kind and interesting people.

Chris K.

Yelp
Friendly staff and really great Mexican. They have a variety of delicious homemade sauces that you can't pass up on. So grab a margarita at the bar while you wait for your delicious meal.

Ben M.

Yelp
Well yes, first review here. Encouraged to review because the experience I had was so shocking that it's like therapy. Mostly, it's about one person there, didn't get his name but I can't imagine the owner or manager wants him to be the representative for the business. First, we ordered at 535p. At 7p, my two friends starting receiving their food. Fine, it's that time of year. We get it. I started waiting and looking (the person who ordered In front of me got their food 20 Minutes before me!). I asked and then looked in the back. Not a good idea. When my food came out finally the guy who brought my food said "thanks for watching us cook, it's one of two restaurants in the valley" as if it were a privilege to eat there and then I walked out and the door didn't shut all the way and he "thanks I got the door too" said in a rude way. After that rude treatment I asked him what his problem was, and he acted like he did nothing, basically pussed out. Got to my place and turns out I'm missing an order - had to go back to get it and then there was zero empathy. After over an hour and a half and they still didn't get it right!. Been here multiple times, get the need for the wait, but treated like this? Also, tipped well, zero appreciation. Why would I come back? So pissed that I decided to sit down on my vacation to write this review. For the manager, the guy who was the jerk was about 5'7" beard dark hair. That said, the food was good and the drinks were great per usual. Addition to my review: owner got back to me, hopefully going to address it. Changed to 3 stars from 1.

Katy C.

Yelp
Overpriced but pretty good. Not-so-friendly bar staff but yummy drinks. Great guac for $1k LOL - please post "market" pricing, especially since definitely a tourist spot. We devoured the fish tacos and burrito.

Michelle W.

Yelp
Prices are high, but the tacos are very good here and they were generous with the meat. We tried the carnitas, good flavor, moist and pretty filling. The reviewers are right about the place needing to be cleaner.

Bonnie H.

Yelp
The Smokey carnitas tacos were great. It would be great if they'd better monitor the salsa area. The salsa bottles with salsa left in them were the real spicy ones. Ate there twice and the same thing. Friendly staff. Worth a stop

Z D.

Yelp
Those are some delicious tacos! It was a little pricey for tacos, and expect long lines (it's very popular and small) but it was definitely not a disappointment and very tasty. Thanks y'all!
