The 6 Best Hostels in Melbourne in 2025

"Newly renovated and popular for its location in the artsy Northside, the highlight for me is that The Mansion sits inside the free tram zone around the CBD and is within easy reach of Queen Victoria Market, Federation Square, and Chinatown. I like the friendly staff, well-equipped kitchen, and the quieter vibe thanks to a no-noise rule after 11pm; beds are basic metal bunks but have really thick mattresses, lockers, plugs, lights, and privacy curtains for decent sleep, and there’s a bar, café, and a co-working space that I found very convenient for digital nomads." - Matthew Kepnes

I recently stayed here for a week and it was quite nice. The hostel’s common spaces, although quite small are very easy spots to meet people. I honestly was not in the meeting new ppl mood after living in another hostel for 5 months 🤣, but yet, always made a new friend every night. This is personally my fault, but I didn’t realize that this place was not super accessible in terms of the steps and all. I had a lot of stuff and lugging my stuff to the top floor and back down was a pain 😓 (no worries). If you have a lot of stuff, I would not stay here for depending on the kind of room you booked. Of course, they can move you, but the hostel was full when I arrived. (You’ll still have to lug your stuff up like 7 steps to the door anyway to get inside). I also wished the common areas were bigger. The kitchen is quite abysmally small, considering the amount of ppl living there. I do understand that the space they have is limited, but I just dislike how the stoves are in the corner and you feel so on top of each other while cooking in there. I do love to cook so that alone made me move. Also the one side where you can sit to eat has no plugs I know, its mainly for eating, but it would nice to have one socket just for casual work since the only side has 4 desk spots and fill up quickly depending on the time of day you go. That first floor area also needs better infestation cleanup. I did not see any mice, but I can smell esp in the study area mice droppings which made working there unpleasant. Also the curtains in the room can be better. The split curtain just isn’t working and feels awkward. Beds were very comfy tho and loved that the beds came with thicker blankets for the rooms are a bit chilly at night due to the old building 😜 But otherwise, bathrooms were fine, staff were really nice, work exchange volunteers were kind too and ran events everyday. No complaints in that dept. Would I stay here again? If I was just visiting the city and going out to eat everyday, yes, but for longterm? Prob not. 💗 If you’re looking for a homey hostel vibe in the CBD and get past these, I think you’ll love this hostel.

The receptionist was friendly and helpful. Some facility like the kitchen and showers could be better, but I guess it's worth the price. At least it was pretty quiet at night and comfy staying there. The other review was right. Somehow this dorm attracts kind people and I even made a new friend. There are also tram and bus stop nearby.

Renzo receptionist is nice and helpful. The hall and common areas smell weird like food, species and no air circulation. The fact that the floor is carpet in a hostel is disgusting for me, but maybe in Australia is common. The bed and sheets were comfortable. For 25 euro the night I can’t complain.

Absolutely loved staying at The Mansion. The staff was super nice and caring. I felt there is a huge attention to make sure there is respect for other guests so I was able to sleep really well. I felt it spacious and with solid systems in place to manage shared spaces. Internet was strong and stable. The historical building has a beautiful character. not sure if in full season of summer the kitchen might feel a bit too small but overall it was a very pleasant, comfortable and clean place to stay. also super close to the city centre. Price was incredibly good in my experience.

Spent just one night but it seemed pretty organised, with common spaces as dining area and bathrooms The building itself is quite gorgeous I would suggest to add privacy curtains to the dorm beds: that tiny existing one is a bit useless

I stayed here for two months from March - May 2025 and it was exactly what I needed. It's not a party hostel, and it's managed that way intentionally, so if you're looking to properly get on it and party every night, it isn't the place for you. I think that's what sets it apart and makes it special though - there are plenty of other hostels with a rowdy vibe, but this place has a lot of longer-termers and suits people looking for work and wanting to stay in a more chilled and respectful environment, on the edge of the CBD. It's situated between two beautiful parks, and although it isn't in the hustle and bustle of the city it's nestled in between the CBD and Brunswick Street, so it's really well located. The hostel still has a great, social, community vibe though, and they have a bar that's open on Friday nights until 11pm. The management are super nice and helpful, especially Ash, and overall I'd definitely recommend the place. I met some beautiful people here and loved my stay,

Location good. Service okay. Private room cold in winter even with the heater. The building is nice from outside and has potential from the inside but definitely needs a lot of refurbishment. Noisy from outside’s busy street which is not their fault but would need to invest in some better windows which you can barely close.

Friendly staff, warm welcome and a great feeling of community among the guests. Kitchen is well equipped, clean bathrooms, three working desks for remote work, a cinema room and a nice outdoor area to relax and eat. Room has been a bit noisy when windows were open due to its location on Victoria parade with a lot of car traffic. Nice parks nearby and good location to explore the city.
