A Wine Novice’s Weekend Guide to the Walla Walla Valley - Eater Seattle

"Inside the hotel’s restaurant, they’re serving zero-kilometer farm-to-table fare made from inland ingredients, like hazelnut custard French toast or a vineyard breakfast sandwich (eggs, Beecher’s cheddar, bacon, and heirloom tomatoes on challah). On the way out, exit through the lobby and take a moment to absorb all the hotel’s restored Italian Renaissance details: the textiles, the carved beams, the lamps." - Meg van Huygen

I have been to some of the finest hotels in Europe and the United States. Yet, none offer the very special charms of the Marcus Whitman Hotel. What makes it so wonderful is a combination of how they preserve its original 1928 design with old style grand Hotel service and atmosphere and modern creature comforts. Their truly friendly Staff warmly welcomes you with an eager to please attitude. Their rooms are spacious, and comfortable with artistically and very tasteful decor, lots of natural light and all the extras that define excellent accommodations. The delicious crisp, clean beds with ample pillows are a dream. All of this comes with a good restaurant and several wine tasting rooms. Best still, the Marcus Whitman is pet friendly and actually affordable. I am here now for the second time, and I have been singing its praises to family and friends all over the US. I urge any travelers headed up Walla Walla way to treat themselves to a stay at this marvelous establishment. I love it so much, wish I could live here!

This was our first visit to Walla Walla, WA and The Marcus Whitman was suggested as part of our travel itinerary, so we decided to have our stay there. Gorgeous venue, great staff, excellent amenities and opportunities. ||||The room was surprisingly spacious and very comfortable. I wish we'd stayed longer. We'll definitely be coming back.

The Marcus Whitman is a fantastic hotel, offering us a warm welcome to Walla Walla and a great stay! The hotel's lobby showcases beautifully restored 1920s architecture. Our room was modern, spacious, well-appointed and comfortable. The hotel's central location made it easy to explore scenic Walla Walla, and offers a brief 10-minute walk to the campus of Whitman College. Kudos to the housekeeping team for making the room ready for our great (albeit all-too-brief) stay. Make sure to enjoy dinner at The Marc restaurant during your stay -- excellent cuisine, superb service, and a wine list that features outstanding wines from Walla Walla wine country!

Great place to rest for a couple nights. Walking distance to restaurants, nice perks for drinks or breakfast. Breakfast was good loved the "gold mashed potatoes" on breakfast plate. But be aware, French toast plate is very misleading as it says "bacon fat not bacon" so, 2 whammies: don't like bacon fat for cooked foods and a side of bacon is very pricey! So wait person did not bother to explain as I had already ordered an item that included a breakfast meat. Well , bottom line, out the door, our breakfast was over $50.00 plus tip! Don't make our mistake! To the establishment: wait staff should be more informative about orders!! Loved the fresh flowers in the lobby and in the dining room! Kudos to the lady/landscaper whom provided all those great flowers!

This is NOT a “premier luxury hotel”! The darkest dreariest hotel I have ever stayed in. The furniture is highly outdated. The carpets are stained. The mattresses are as firm as cardboard. The bathrooms should be renovated. Outdated sinks, showers, and toilets. The lobby is just an overload of old furniture and paint chipping off the ceiling. Housekeeping left our hotel room door ajar one entire afternoon. I feel like I stayed in a dark cave for 3 nights. Imagine staying in a room with charcoal grey ceilings and olive green walls. The only thing good about this hotel is its location. I do not recommend this old hotel and will not stay here next time we return to Walla Walla

I have been on temporary assignment in the tri-cities Washington area and decided to visit Walla Walla for its famous wine tastings. We booked a "tower room" in the Marcus Whitman Hotel. It was a bit pricey at $332/night and after a series of additional fees", we paid about $370. The room was OK, nothing to rave about and was otherwise unremarkable. What was billed as a "tower room" was a small room on the 5th floor that overlooked a Shell gas station with plenty of street noise in the evening. |Service was very good, including check-in and in the restaurant and bar. The martinis we tried in the bar were also good, but expect to pay $20 for a drink. Dinner in the restaurant was also good. |We gave this venue 4.5 starts for service, 4 stars for food, 3 stars for the room, and 2.5 stars for value. The building is iconic and I hope they can up their game a bit. Overall, the stay was nice but we just did not see the value, primarily in the room pricing, but also in the food and beverage pricing. Some suggestions for the food and beverage management team below. ||Suggestions: |Send your executive chef to Las Vegas, NV and have the eggs benedict at the Buchon which is a restaurant in the Venetian hotel . Their hollandaise is unmatched; perhaps you can follow their lead. |Send your beverage manager to Pismo Beach, Calif (close to San Luis Obispo). Visit Giuseppe's at 891 Price St. Get there right when they open at 4PM because they fill up fast. Sit at the bar and try two of their martinis: their classic vodka martini (use the well vodka), dry with a twist, and then try their flat-liner martini. Note the cost of these and serving provided.

First off, we didn’t expect much from Walla Walla as we were there on family business. What a delight. The town is charming, the food wonderful and the people nice. As to the hotel, everyone was friendly, the bed was roomy and comfortable. It was not overpriced.

This hotel is fine to excellent in every way, except one: Wi-fi and internet service is broken. It's a long-term problem that a neglectful or incompetent ownership refuses to fix. Staff is as helpful as they can be, and advised us that one has to bring their laptop to the lobby to get connected to the internet. The location is excellent and that is why we have stayed there twice. We recommend this hotel for the staff, the rooms, and the location, but would HIGHLY recommend it if upper management and or ownership would start paying attention to the internet service problem.

Yelp
I've always loved going to The Bar at The Marc and historically the food and drinks have been phenomenal. I went tonight planning on getting dinner. I got a lemon drop, that was okay, and fries that were undercooked. I opted not to order dinner.

Yelp
Cute older Hotel built in 1928. Staff is polite and helpful. The hotel itself is very old, but kept up for the most part. The elevators move slow and you can hear noise outside your room, but if you can deal with all of that, this has a great location to all the wineries walking distance and they take care of you.

Yelp
Location, location, location! The lobby is quite beautiful and I am sure the amenities are fine. But the newly renovated rooms are still very old. The fan from the heater kept going on and off all night and difficult to regulate. The bathroom is way too tiny and inadequate to be called a luxury hotel. Their clientele was so unfriendly and not very nice. The soap and shampoo on the wall reminded me of "cheap" motels. The elevator was very small and slow. On the positive end, staff were great and friendly and it was wonderful being able to walk to downtown. This was key for us. Glad we only slept there. 5 stars for service and one star for our overpriced room.

Emmy M.

Yelp
Had breakfast here on the way out of town. Not only was the setting refined but the food was delicious! The individual meals were also $4 on average less than other popular breakfast places we ate at in downtown Walla Walla. The only exception was the latte which was $2 more. The service was friendly and relaxed which was pleasant after the rush at some of the other places we went. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
We stayed there during Cayuse Weekend in April of '24 and had a great time. The building is old world beautiful. The restaurant is excellent. The wine tastings in the hotel are delicious. The staff was terrific. There were some issues caused by the combination of a new remodel, a very busy weekend and a staff shortage. In the end it all got worked out with their very cooperative staff. We plan to stay there again next year.

Yelp
Excellent hotel. The lobby is just incredible, you could just spend hours there reading a book, maybe catch a glimpse of a ghost! Right next to historic downtown. Rooms are well appointed, bathrooms huge, air conditioning just stellar. For a historic hotel, I was totally impressed and will return one day!

Yelp
I have been coming to this hotel for years. I have recommended this hotel to countless people of the years. However, at my last stay this last weekend, I felt like it had gone down hill a little. Some of it is beginning to look a little run down with overly worn carpets and stains. And the restaurant inside, The Mark, was also a small step down from what I remember. Nothing was bad. Its still a really solid hotel, but it may no longer be the 5 star hotel I fondly remember.

Yelp
Great hotel and lovely and friendly staff. The restaurant lounge was conveniently located. They had a great selection of wines and specialty drinks. Food was well prepared and fresh. We enjoyed a burger and salad and had a nice time there. Thankful for a nice visit and glad we found sweet accommodations. Beds and amenities were amazing. We will definitely stay there again. Great shops and wineries close by. You will enjoy this town and happy they have an airport close to venture to Seattle! Enjoy your visit!

Yelp
This was a go to recommendation to stay at for local wedding we had a Walla Walla, and we had a great experience! Convenience: unmatched! We got complimentary shuttles to and from the airport, even when our flight delayed was only getting on at midnight. Also the location was walking distance to all the restaurants downtown, and there were even a bunch of wineries on the same block Service: the staff was very helpful, even when we had to a change of plans and had to stay an extra night because of a flight cancellation Food: highly recommend the free breakfast! Vegetarian friendly. They had scrambled eggs, potatoes, and the usual continental breakfast items as well. Try the monkey bread! Huge compliments to the chef and staff here!

Yelp
This hotel was good but it wasn't great. Based on other reviews I had read I was expecting it to be a bit bitter. Our room was right next to the elevation which was very slow (it's for guests and staff) and loud. The service was ok but nothing special. I found the room to be very dark-not a lot of lights and the dark paint made it even darker. It was a fine experience but nothing special.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this historic gem in the center of Walla Walla. This building has undergone a remarkable restoration, and the quality of the rooms make any stay here a bargain. Four oof us dined at their restaurant named the "Mark" and found the food delicious and reasonably priced. Inside and surrounding the hotel are dozens of Wine tasting venues and the town is historic and very picturesque. This is the place to be in Walla Walla.

Yelp
We didn't stay here but had dinner twice in two days. I love everything on their menu but especially love the sweet French onion soup. (It's on the bar menu but you can order it from the restaurant too.)

Yelp
Money grubbers! I really have no idea why anyone would stay here. Way over price and the customer staying is not number one. They have no pool inside or out. They have no business area where you can access a computer, and they don't allow anyone on their network. Their internet blows big time. Nothing is complimentary a safeway bottle of water is 2 dollars. Front desk people are rude and unhelpful. Would not recommend this piece of crap property to anyone. would never ever stay here again!

Yelp
This hotel is a Historic Hotel. That is the important note when looking to stay here. Part of its charm is its history, classic decor, and old oddities. Honestly, at a price not much more than your local run of the mill hotel, like a Hampton Inn (no shame), you can get yourself a pretty good sized suite here in the tower. I would recommend staying in the tower at least once, and if that is not your style, stay in the annex which is the newer addition. Personally, I liked the vibes, old charm, and oddities that came with staying in the tower. It is the tallest building in Walla Walla, which to big city people may not mean much, but you can actually get some pretty good view from your room depending on which level you are on. The service is friendly and very informative about food, restaurants, and of course wineries. There are two wineries attached in the building, one of which we got a free tasting to. L'Ecole, located in the building too, has a tasting room there as well as to the West of town. So if you do not have the time or travel to get to the west side, then stop by here. Our room was clean. No complaints there. The bathroom is not as large as a "modern" hotel if you will. But most will be just fine! It is part of the charm! Looking at AirBnb prices in the area, which were the same or more for old dodgy homes, this was a no brainer. It is affordable. It is clean. It is safe. You can walk to a lot of cool spots right from the hotel. There are good restaurants nearby and great wineries within walking distance. We did not get the chance to check out the in house restaurant. Overall, would recommend as a good place to stay in Walla Walla for the weekend.

Melba B.

Yelp
We stayed here may 15 for 2 nights in the newer section. It was less money, but the rooms are awful. Small and dark. The bathroom is small as an outhouse. Pillows flat. They have a weird coffee set up. No filters in room. They also charge a amenity fee that covers wifi, parking, etc. A continental breakfast used to be complimentary, but now that the hotel was sold, none. The front desk was unorganized. Apparently, coffee and pastries are offered in am in main lobby, but we had asked on check in, and were told only breakfast for fee in restaurant was available. Our wifi did not work. We had no coffee. I will not stay here again. Go to any other hotel. Yes, the lobby is nice, but the rooms are not. The section we stayed in is very old, low ceilings, and uncomfortable. No lights in closet, so it is unusable.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. The lobby area is astonishing, beautiful patterns, very homey feeling. Staff are nice and the place is pretty quiet (which is good). Rooms are spacious and the beds are separated as well, queen size btw. Hotel is in the center of Walla Walla with many great grub spots blocks away. If you by some chance come to Walla Walla, stay here! Nuff said.

Yelp
I stayed at the Marcus Whitman Hotel as an attendee at the annual Wine Bloggers Conference before the pandemic (and I'm finally getting around to writing this review). The hotel provided comfortable, if somewhat dated, accommodations. The conference space was good, with plenty of room for all the social activities and learning sessions at my convention. The hotel is located in downtown Walla Walla, and is within easy walking distance to dozens of boutique wineries, shops, and restaurants. In fact, the hotel has five on-site tasting rooms right off the main lobby! It was so much fun after a day of sessions to hit the streets with some new friends and go taste more local wine. The hotel has a private parking lot that offered free parking, which was super nice, and there's an on-site restaurant that served a good breakfast. The staff was great, and check-in was a breeze. Complimentary wi-fi worked great, which is a must when on a business trip. You could tell the hotel has lots of experience hosting conferences of all sizes, as everything over the four days I was there hummed along perfectly. I booked a standard king room, and it was far from luxurious. Think an older Crowne Plaza type room and you won't be disappointed. The hotel opened in 1928, and it shows (ha ha). While clean, everything appeared drab and very dated, from the brown carpet and the vintage looking lampshades to the old school tile and toilet in the bathroom. The dark furniture add more gloominess to the room. With some new furniture and fixtures, this place could be easily updated. The television was the only modern thing in the room. Locals said the Marcus Whitman is known as one of the nicer properties in town, and I would probably agree. Just a tiny bit of interior design updates would make this a much more comfortable place to stay, but you can't beat the friendly service and excellent location.

Yelp
A historical and the tallest building in all of Walla Walla. The lobby is beautiful with rich woodwork and lots of seating. You could get your pick of any type of seating. A wingback chair by the fireplace, sure! How about a settee, yes mam! The receptionists are warm and helpful. They don't rush and are very considerate. Talk to them about the different wineries and you'll be in for some seasoned advice. The rooms are adequate for a weekend stay - clean, with all the amenities and come with a nice bed for a good night's sleep. The best value for your stay though comes from the complimentary continental breakfast. You will be spoilt for choices, you can tell a lot of effort and thought goes into this. You get to enjoy this breakfast in the main dining room and will be taken care of by hardworking waitresses. This hospitality reminded me of a time gone by. By far, the best complimentary breakfast I've had at any hotel.

Adelbert B.

Yelp
We finally stayed here after years of coming to Walla Walla to see our grandkids. Checkin was a breeze, Tom the desk person was very hospitable and friendly. The ambiance is awesome, although the lobby was a little loud, dogs barking and another family playing a loud game. All good. Room was very nice and very comfortable, very good bed. Had some light fare in the lounge which was open late. Food was very good, wine excellent, service (Stacie) and ambiance excellent. I would come back to the restaurant even if I wasn't staying at the hotel. Complimentary breakfast buffet was underwhelming. Again, service and ambiance were excellent, food was good but not a great selection and not hot.

Yelp
Best place to stay in Walla Walla! Every staff member is friendly and knowledgeable and always willing to help. Another hotel overbooked and so we were sent to the Marcus Whitman and they accepted us with open arms. Our room was clean and well stocked. The hotel was very clean and they offer free breakfast on the weekends. It looks old fashion - but if feels like a cozy hotel. I prefer the dim lights and actual furniture you can sit on!

Yelp
We have stayed here many times, for many reasons. The cleanliness is top notch! I'm a stickler for clean hotel rooms. The beds are so comfortable! We always get a tower suite and once you do, you will always get one too! Location is amazing! So many tasting rooms and restaurants in walking distance. Several tasting rooms right on site! L'ecole, Locati and a few others, as well as a coffee bar w/ barista. The hotel restaurant for breakfast and dinner is great. The chefs table is fun & delicious, I highly recommend it! There is road noise, to be expected in the middle of town, also the garbage trucks start early Friday am, so don't sleep with your window open. A highly recommend this hotel!

Yelp
The Marcus Whitman hotel is the tallest building in Walla Walla so you can definitely use it as a landmark and a place point! We saw the place on our very first visit to Walla Walla and Steve made a vow on our next trip here we will stay here. I'm very glad we did! We stayed in a room not in the main building but in the smaller newer part of the hotel. We really enjoyed our room! I slept very good and that's saying something because the last ten years or so I don't sleep so well when traveling. Not only did I sleep well but we both impressed with amenities and what was here at the hotel. There is a gym you can use and a wonderful continental breakfast. It was the best continental breakfast I've had in many years. Also on location there is a quaint little walk up coffee shop off to the side of the main lobby as well as a wine tasting room for one of the many wineries in the area. We had a very good experience here and would love to come back whenever we overnight in Walla Walla again.

Yelp
We had such a great time here. Beautiful hotel. Beautiful room. Great location. Why did you have to ruin it on the last night? Went to the lounge for a nightcap. Busy but not overwhelming. We sat. And sat. And sat. Three wait staff walked past us multiple times. I finally went to the bar and the bartender completely put me off. "I'll come over to your table or I'll have someone serve you." He lied. So we sat. And we sat. And we sat. The family with four kids got served. How is it that kids are allowed in a bar??? Three other couples who came in after us got served. So finally I flagged down a waitress who said, "Would you like to start with something?" So we asked for our drinks. And we sat. And we sat. And we sat. So we left. Very out of character for the rest of our stay. Very confused. But BS.

Yelp
For the price, I'm unimpressed. 1. The room is fine, but the bathroom is very small. The doorways are very small, as is the elevator. If you have a luggage cart, there's barely enough room for you and it. 2. The locks are not solid or secure. Exhibit A: I checked in at 3. The room was not ready, so I waited for 30 minutes in the hallway. Since getting in my room, at least 4 people have attempted to get in and were successful enough to get a foot and head in the door. Enough to get the intruder lock open. I was in bed. In my pj's. Do you know how disconcerting and disturbing it is to have complete strangers try to barge into your room? I called down to the office twice. They said they made a mistake and apologized. It happened again. So, now I have jerry-rigged the lock with a hanger and moved the desk to prohibit further guests. However, I don't think I'll be sleeping very soundly tonight. 4. The parking situation is scarce. Will not stay here again, willingly. 5. The restaurant is really overpriced and not worth it. The locks are not secure enough to deter a strong, enthusiastic person with a key to get in. Bring a bat or a door jammer upon checkin. Don't bother with the restaurant. You're getting 5 star prices at Wendy's quality. To end on a positive note, it's clean, and the staff seem nice (though somewhat incompetent).

Yelp
This hotel is probably one of the main reasons why our stay at Walla Walla wasn't that boring! I paid a total of $410 from a Saturday - Monday on grad weekend for a Double Room with 2 queen beds. It is sooo beautiful and I loved their robes and the fancy built in shampoo/conditioner dispensers in the room! All the staff that I came in contact with were friendly! Bed was comfortable. Parking is free. I was told that the hotel was fully booked for the weekend that was I staying (which makes sense bc it was graduation weekend for WWU) but not once did I feel like the hotel was crowded or loud. The only thing that I was sad about is that I didn't get a chance to check out the terrace. See what had happened was....... The very nice young gentleman at the front desk on Saturday night notified me that we were able to take our wine glasses from the Wine Lounge upstairs to the terrace and enjoy the beautiful sunset there. So up we went with our glasses of Riesling. And let's just say, we went to a wrong location... AND stayed there for a couple of hours thinking we were at the right place. It wasn't until the next day when I spoke to another employee Therese that I realized that we went to a completely wrong location, tbh I think we weren't even supposed to be at that small terrace that we found and had mistaken for real thing so I won't even say where it's located lol But we checked out early morning bc we had to drive back to Portland. I received our receipt and found some extra charges that wasn't supposed to be on there and Therese took care of it promptly! All in all, beautiful hotel and great service!

Yelp
We were gobsmacked at the beauty of this old hotel. Very classy, clean and elegant. We were able to check in a bit early. Unfortunately we were at an event in Dayton and didn't get to spend a ton of time at the hotel but we will definitely be back!

Yelp
Overall: 4 Stars Décor: 4 Stars (Classic styling) Bed Comfort: 2 Stars (Lacking - springs) Linens: 3 Stars (A bit worn) Onsite Dining: 4 Stars Park Price: 5 Stars (free) Neighborhood: 4 Stars (shopping, wine tasting and dining all within walking) The Marcus Whitman evokes an a feeling of a bygone era. An era of travel that was a bit more refined, elegant, and slower paced. Is this a modern hotel with all the amenities - absolutely not - but it is well appointed, centrally located and worth the time to come and stay in the historical tower for a few days when you are in two for wine drinking and enjoying the greater Walla Walla area. Two options - historic tower and the annex (think traditional motel) - if you are going to stay here, definitely stay in the tower. Rooms are large and comfortable. Furniture evokes something out of the 40's. Club chairs are a nice touch in many of the rooms. Beds need help - not super comfortable, but manageable. Bonus for the location - solid restaurant and bar and the morning breakfast is ample with all your traditional favorites. And - two wineries have tasting rooms off the lobby - how can you say no to that. Enjoy!

Joan T.

Yelp
Is it horrible? No. I've stayed in worse. Is it nice? Not even close. "Motel" is the best way to describe it. It's old, and not in a good way. I am all for the classic character of a place, but when will properties realize that this is no longer "cool" and needs to be updated. 2 stars for the staff, who were amazing. Otherwise, stay somewhere else.

Yelp
Loved the staff, and Jonathan especially! Really warm and inviting, answered a ton of questions for us prior to our arrival as well as once we were here. Room was lovely and spacious. Great location right in the middle of the old downtown. Overall a great experience for our four night getaway celebrating my wife's birthday.

Teresa K.

Yelp
A classic historic hotel with the most beautiful lobby! Rooms are wonderful, with, get this---glass glasses and ceramic coffee cups! The staff could not have been more helpful. We wanted to walk around the historic homes neighborhood and the young lady at the desk did some research and told us where to go!!

Kerrie F.

Yelp
Be aware, had a reservation several months out, as I was coming into town for a wedding. Just had a message left on my voicemail that they are needing to close due to something with the fire marshal, but "don't worry, they will waive my cancellation fees". I have to admit, I have a bit of a problem feeling appreciative of you "waiving" my fees on my non refundable stay, that I didn't want cancelled. I now have no where to stay for my incoming date, which is this week. I understand unavoidable situations, but sure think you would have been scrambling for better solutions for your incoming customers. You have lost my vote of confidence and my support. Unless you feel comfortable with the potential of being left high and dry, I would look for another option who might provide at a minimum, a better customer experience.
google avatar

Allison P.

Yelp
Booked a Stay & Play package but it was snowing the day before & the greens looked rough. Upon check in, the male at the desk was very nice & said canceling golf would not be a problem. In fact, HE brought up the idea of canceling due to the bad weather. The following morning, spoke with Andrea (the manager, apparently) & she made me feel so ridiculous. I was treated as if it was a hassle to cancel, she was sighing & very obviously annoyed. We are a younger couple, maybe not taken seriously or worthy of better treatment? Although we have both worked in the service industry for over 15 years & financially stable. It wouldn't be her place to judge us on that, anyway.. but definitely felt judged. Upon checkout, I wanted to say something regarding the treatment but felt slighted & didn't really know what it would accomplish. She truly gave the impression she could care less. Rooms in the west tower are smaller; could barely have the bathroom door open without touching the toilet. Our shower didn't drain at ALL & we had to buy a wine key. They were quiet, though which is always nice. Breakfast was good, but make sure you pay attention to the times; they vary between weekend & weekdays. The lobby is beautiful. Loved the wine tasting rooms that are right there on site.. easily accessible. Close to downtown; we walked everywhere! Although the MW is beautiful, we will probably save our $$ at $200/night & try somewhere else. Andrea was just RUDE & left a bad taste in my mouth.

Yelp
We stayed in room 417 on 8/17. Really disappointed in the average or below average room. Very sparse, like missing furniture in an empty corner of the room. Small bath, below average mattress, cheap vinyl wood looking vinyl through the room, noisy A/C. Have stayed there many times in past years , which is why we booked it. Maybe because our booking was through Expedia, we were assigned to a less than standard room. Great breakfast buffet in the morning however! Just expected more out of a classic hotel.

Gumba C.

Yelp
A great old style hotel with gorgeous sitting areas with beautiful chandeliers. Service was outstanding. Therese at the front desk was a joy to work with. She said good morning calling us by name. Very helpful and generous. All staff we encountered were polite and hospitable . Food and drinks were fantastic and the topper is the hotel is located in easy walking distance to Main Street shops tasting rooms and dining. Will definitely return soon. If you go and Therese is working the front desk tell her hi

Yelp
Lovely suite in the old tower. Wonderful staff, great dinner in the restaurant. Walking distance to tasting rooms. Will definitely return ASAP.

Yelp
The hotel is delightful and well-appointed. Do not expect a pool or concierge; but if you want a classic, cozy old hotel in the heart of downtown Walla Walla, then this is the place for you. The take-and-go breakfast was disappointing. While the restaurant was open for lunch and dinner, for some reason the breakfast buffet advertised in room rate on website was not operating because of COVID. They could have done better than what was offered (think 7-11 fare).

Yelp
If you're visiting Walla Walla, there's really only one place you should be staying. The Marcus Whitman is the absolute best. I've stayed here a few times and been totally satisfied each time. The historic tower is really cool and has great views of the city. The other newer part of the hotel is just dandy as well. The lobby is to die for with its antique furnishings and fancy rugs, and omg the drinks they provide are just wonderful. The "continental" breakfast they serve is so amazing, it's worth getting up early and suffering through your wine tasting hangover just to get some of the extensive buffet. Easy to get to from the highway, and super close to the Main Street where all the tasting rooms and adorable shops and restaurants are.

Yelp
I have stayed in both the new section of the hotel and the original section of the hotel and recommend the original. The rooms are quieter. The location of the hotel couldn't be better! It's an easy walk to restaurants, stores and wineries. Breakfast is pretty typical, staff is friendly and helpful and the restaurant stays open long enough for a late night snack or dessert.

Yelp
Change in ownership has taken a negative toll on Marcus Whitman. It's sad but true. Even the staff has moved elsewhere, for good reason. Can't come back here with current conditions.

Yelp
My first visit to Walla Walla and the historic Marcus Whitman seemed like the only hotel in the region that was nicer than a La Quinta Inn. Booked a luxury suite in the historic tower and loved having 2 rooms to relax in (especially because we weren't doing a whole lot due to the COVID pandemic). The price was very reasonable for the experience. I felt the safety precautions were being taken seriously by staff. Loved the free parking. Had some great food from the Vineyard Lounge. Staff were professional, helpful, and courteous. When I decide to return to Walla Walla I don't think I will even consider staying anywhere else.

Yelp
This was a great place to stay but unfortunately they were not enforcing the COVID mask mandate and multiple guests were not wearing masks.

Yelp
Every single member of the staff showed exemplary service, from Chad at reservations until the moment we checked out. The old girl is showing her age a bit, though. The carpet was buckling in the hallways on the floor on which we stayed, and the elevator lurches at every stop. My husband teased that we should bend our knees as the stop approached, and one man joked that those who had brought coffee into the elevator were very brave indeed. The heating fan was a little loud, and the breakfast not quite up to earlier standards. Our ice machine was out. The sofa in our suite had permanently squished in pillows and were sun faded. The bedding was crisp and fresh. Still, she's a beloved old auntie, centrally-located, and we will be back!

Yelp
We spent just one night there in January. Very friendly staff. Motel was very nice. The room was comfortable and clean. Also enjoyed a great breakfast in the morning there with a decent assortment to choose from.

Yelp
Like a once great wine left in the cellar too long, the former grandeur of this hotel is past. The faded, scratched and mismatched furniture that clutter the lobby and historic rooms betray any illusion that the current management cares or can afford to bring this property back to life. Sadly, this grape has withered on the vine.

Yelp
This historical hotel is stunning, elegant and a world-class (yet a small town, friendly) experience. Jonathan (Front Desk) provided exemplary customer service and made us feel welcome. Experiencing the charm and old world elegance was a special treat. The "dog friendly" room we stayed in was wonderful and the beds extremely comfortable. The 2nd floor art collection (that tells the historical story) was a true treasure. We also appreciated the complimentary breakfast and well-equipped workout facility. Thank you for making our stay an outstanding one and for taking extensive precautions in keeping the hotel clean and adhering to your strict COVID-19 policies. Sincerely, Kt and Family

Yelp
The hotel is located in the heart of town. Shops and restaurants are a short walk. No need to drive. Our room was a Deluxe King # 220 in the West Wing. The room was clean and nicely decorated. A mini refrigerator was included . The bathroom was small with not much room to maneuver but had enough counter space. The complementary full hot and cold breakfast was a great amenity. Complementary parking is included. The hotel and restaurant staff was friendly and helpful. Check in and out was smooth. The restaurant and lounge are in the tower building which has a rich history back to 1928. There is a lot of dark wood paneling in the ornate lobby and restaurant..The lobby's terrazzo floors have been beautifully restored.

Yelp
Nice classic hotel. Front desk people were very welcoming and friendly. The hotel itself is very beautiful and vintage. Location is great and close to most downtown needs. Elevator was a shame, wait times were long and stairs weren't an option as there was no re-entry from stairwell for some odd reason. The Vineyard Lounge has a good bartender, decent food and lots of Washington wines and whiskeys selections. Breakfast was decent, just above a Best Western breakfast but fresh fruit wasn't great and coffee was weak. Some of the cereals were outdated.

Yelp
Needs a refresh makeover. The staff is outstanding and seems to do the best they can. The restaurant food compared to others in walking distance is well... embarrassing. The bar is ok but go to any other place if you want a real Walla Walla fresh high end food and wine experience. It's a great location so stay here but don't eat here.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, professional and friendly staff. Nice rooms with a lot of those small touches that make your stay extra pleasant: Wine glasses, real coffee cups instead of paper, lighted make up mirror, your own personal pouf for shower gel etcetera. The curtains didn't close so we couldn't block out the streetlights. The heating unit was so loud it woke me up every time it turned on. The bathrooms are extremely small, and toilet louder than an industrial toilet at a rest stop. I should mention that we were staying in the newer wing and not the tower.
