Google
I was in town and this range came highly recommended, so I gave them a call for more information. The woman I spoke with was courteous, thorough, and answered all my questions. When I arrived, I was welcomed by genuinely kind staff and had no trouble getting a lane to practice. Afterward, an employee even took the time to check my sights at my request. Overall, a great experience—I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend giving them a try!

Google
just took the range safety class and it was exultant. The instructor was very down to earth and relatable. He corrected bad habits and improved my accuracy a great deal. he also got me out of my comfort zone and had me shooting off hand with confidence. The shop and range is very nice and the staff is down to earth

Google
Went on 8-21-25. Everyone was nice and helpful. Ventilation was good and cool. Hand cranking my target is better than making the range cold and waiting to walk out and change it. I don't know what the problem is with some or what they pay for electric. I will return.

Google
Went here for a gun lesson with my wife. Eric is our instructor. He was very knowledgeable about gun education and safety. He was very patient in teaching us especially that both of us are novices when it comes to gun handling as well as firing it. He went above and beyond in helping us gain confidence as well as be proficient and be a responsible gun owners. Also to add, I heard that some gun range instructors can be pushy to get you more training lessons in order for them to profit from you. Marksman does none of that. They are all professionals and I highly recommend them for your gun lesson needs or for your gun purchases in the future. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Google
"I recently completed three security classes at The Marksman in Newport News, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the experience. The instructors were exceptionally knowledgeable, professional, and engaging, making complex material easy to understand. The course content was thorough, well-structured, and highly relevant to real-world scenarios. The facility itself was clean, well-equipped, and provided a comfortable learning environment. I left each class feeling confident and well-prepared. I highly recommend The Marksman to anyone seeking top-notch security training. Five stars all the way!"

Google
Some of the staff were friendly and helpful, but the ladies there seemed to be mad at the world. Range fee was expensive and the actual range lanes were dated. The target carrier had to be manually sent out as the electronic option down (on all lanes). They tried to sell me 200 rounds of cheap 556 ammo for $300! Ended up shooting what I had with me and ran out of there. Even the pawn shop on Mercury is better than the Marksman!

Google

Google
Kind and very knowledgeable. Gunsmith in house is solid! Mega does great work. Sherry & Steve are great also. Always willing to help. Highly.

Yelp
The people there are friendly. The place needs to updated. The place looks like it was made in the 80s.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a bit of a smaller gun range than those that I'm used to but it is still a lot of fun still the stuaff were very polite and helpful and I was even able to get a Halloween target!! I really enjoyed being able to shoot the pumpkins a lot of the locations on the offer zombies lol This is closer to my house then a lot of the bigger ranges so I will definitely be coming back they do offer a family plan that seems like a good deal their daily rate well hourly rate was very reasonable and they also offer memberships or discounts
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
The people are knowledgeable and very helpful. The range could be better but is usable. Would recommend getting their early.
google avatar

Colette C.

Yelp
a great experience when using their range and learning the laws related to gun use. They take the time to educate you and the costs are reasonable. I walked away feeling confident and prepared if I ever need it.

Janet L.

Yelp
This place is unsafe. I've been here a few times and have regretted it. It's cheap, but not worth getting hurt. First bad instance--a ricochet--- came back at me from another shooter. Not sure if it was range equipment or not policing the shooter's ammo, but unsafe. Then today another shooter flagged me with his pistol. I called him on it, and he corrected, but very unsafe!

Nathan N.

Yelp
What a great place! Great little indoor range with everything you need. Walk in service. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jose R.

Yelp
Millitary friendly, very fair price on ammo, targets and range time. Only thing is that its small so if alot of people are there that day it gets hot and smokey pretty quick could do with upgrading the ventilation. On a day where there aren't as many people im sure it's perfectly fine. Manual handcrank pulley system for your targets so if you're short your gonna struggle overall 6/10
google avatar

Bee K.

Yelp
I have been there at least 4 times now. The price to use a range is reasonable. Now onto the cons of it. Bad lighting: small fire stations ( tables ) : antiquated pulley system: no markings on the wall / Floor to know how far you are shooting: cold in the winter & hot in the summer: where you hang your targets is held onto the pulley system with zip ties: you use cloths pins to hold your target to a "small piece of cardboard ": your surroundings are small and pretty dark compared to other ranges. Taking all this into consideration, you can't beat the price if everything listed above doesn't bother you.

Sammie S.

Yelp
This business is stuck in the early 2000s. Terrible website and poor quality range. Do better!

Yelp
Recently held a pistol orientation at the Marksman and the event was an overwhelming success. I contacted the range and was connected with Juan who guided me through their requirements. They have their own certified instructors but allowed me to use the space since I was coming from another state to teach the course. Upon arrival, I was greeted and given a tour of the facility (classroom, bathrooms, etc). The classrooms were clean and organized which made it very easy to setup. I truly believe because of the seamless service I received that I was able to focus on the lessons and my students! Thanks again!

ZeAnna B.

Yelp
they're not respectful especially to active duty military ! they tried to call the cops on us and tried to give us a refund since we walked in ! they're terrible , I do not recommend going here!

Tristan E.

Yelp
I've gone here many times over the years. I took someone new to the area and brought them in with me today. Today will be my last. When I walked in there was a sign that said you could not shoot 45 Colt among other calibers, temporarily. I politely asked the person at the sales desk "what's the reason for not being allowed to shoot 45 Colt?". I expected to hear something along the lines of they were doing maintenance and if I was in their shoes I would have said when it was expected you could shoot 45 Colt again. Customer Service Skills 101. Instead the response from the person behind the counter was "Because I said so" in a very rude tone. This was a response from a person trying to get my money. I didn't want to ruin the experience for the person who was brand new to the area by just leaving after that rude response, but if I had been alone I would have left right there. After we got done shooting and were walking out to the parking lot the person I took expressed shock at how rude that gentleman behind the counter was. I would assume he was the owner, which is fine he can make rules because he said so. But I can also pick other shooting ranges and will do so in the future. What's hysterical is the guy I brought there to show him the Marksman as a place to shoot decided he would go elsewhere based on the owner's comments to me. I told another friend who shoots the story and he came to the same conclusion, he's done going there too. I intend to tell every single person in the shooting community in the area I know this story. My advice is if you want to go shooting in the area go to Freedom in Virginia Beach. It's a great store and my customer service experiences there have been great. You might have to wait some for freedom, but they run a good business and its popular for a reason. I don't have time anymore for rude people who want my money and won't ever give the marksman a chance again. I think the owner if he'd like to increase his business volume should take a serious hard review of his customer service skills.

Yelp
Nice selection of pistols and long guns for sale. The rental counter has many choices in brands and calibers. They offer training classes from novice to professional with armed security, unarmed security to police qualification training. Took my concealed carry class here and they were very thorough in theory to hands on training. I couldn't imagine just taking theory without hands on.

Yelp
I went into the Marksman indoor shooting range in Newport News, Va. I was immediately greeted by Mrs. Stepp who was very knowledgeable about the various types of handguns. I showed Mrs. Stepp my M&P 2.0 Shield 9mm and my M&P 2.0 full size. She then asked when did I purchase them and I stated last Saturday. She then stated if they were purchased brand new I may be able to get a $ 50.00 rebate. She then told me about the website and how to file the claim. I then signed the range waiver and went in and shot 100 rounds in both of my pistols. She made my experience there very pleasant and I definitely will be going back to this range to shoot because of her great personality, ease to talk to and knowledge base on various weapons. Mrs. Stepp you are awesome. Ray

Yelp
Nothing special about the place. Just somewhere to go and shoot my guns. Overall, the customer is good but not good enough for me to purchase a membership. The old man is crabby as heck but manageable. The other employees (the lady who works there and the younger guys) are friendlier. The ranges are okay at best. I agree with the previous post that markings on the floor indicating distance would be a big help. Add to that list the dividers between the lanes. Higher ones would make the shooter's experience safer. I recommend wearing a hat and a long-sleeved shirt because if someone is in the lane beside you, their spent shell cases will end up in your lane and on you. I've got the burn mark from a hot 40 caliber on my right arm to prove it. Asking for an exhaust fan would be too much so I wear a mask. Will I continue to do business with them? Yes, as long as the old man stays in his lane. There is better and I won't hesitate to take my money elsewhere so long as the old man stays in his place. Do I recommend the place? Yes.

Yelp
Got all my DCJS classes done here. Very great great staff and teacher. Juan is the best

Yelp
The most unprofessional business I've ever been to. They scream discounts for military service but I warn you for the service member only!!! Not you spouse or kids. Terrible prices on ammo. Make you shoot their cheap 5.56 ammo through your rifle that's probably worth more than the building. Very dirty and very cramped shooting stalls. If you like shooting in a dark leaky basement this is your place!!!! If you want to go somewhere with incredible customer service class clean facility and great pricing and honor our military veterans I suggest making the trip to Richmond to colonial shooting Academy or green top shooting range.

Yelp
HEALTH HAZARD!!! The ventilation in the range area was terrible. Couldn't breathe at all. The employees enter the range area with masks on. That tells you they know something is not right. On top of that - $35 for 50 rounds of frangible 223 rounds with cheap powder that burns your eyes and lungs. Would never come back.

Yelp
Excellent shooting range and training center. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. I've had great experiences and customer service here.

Yelp
I enjoyed my experience here. I signed up for a private lesson and my instructor was Steve. I have only shot one my husband's guns, a few rounds out in the mountain, a few years ago. His collection of firearms continues to grow and I felt it would be necessary to learn some basics since they're in my house. While my husband is a more than capable instructor, I wanted someone who doesn't know me and therefore, will not give me the benefit of the doubt about anything, to teach me what I wanted to know. Steve took his time making sure I was comfortable and going over all beginning aspects of guns and shooting. It was perfect for a first timer like me, but also not too overwhelming. He was perfect with me when we finally got to the shooting portion of my private lesson and while I felt a little overwhelmed being at the range for the first time, he was calm and patient while giving me simple and repetitive reminders when I was shooting. Speaking of the range, a lot of previous reviews mentioned the poor ventilation... I'm not sure if anything has changed since their review compared to mine, but I didn't experience the issues the other reviews mentioned. I'm highly asthmatic and was also dealing with severe seasonal allergies on the day of my class (making my asthma act up even before I got there) and I didn't feel like ventilation was an issue. My lungs and eyes didn't burn afterwards, my asthma was no more of an issue at the range as it had been before heading over there that day. I felt welcomed by the rest of the staff working that day as well, and while I had no idea what to expect and was very nervous, I felt very comfortable and incredibly happy with my experience by the end of my visit. Plus, with these guys being about 5 minutes from my house as an extra selling point, I will definitely come back.

Thomas B.

Yelp
The owner of this facility thinks insulting his clientele is funny. I will not be doing any more firearms transfers here. Tacticool's staff in Newport News, VA is much nicer. They also only charge $25 for a firearm transfer. They are a much better crowd.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
The storefront isn't anything to really brag about. There's not much of a selection of guns or accessories. I found the staff to be friendly and hospitable. The shooting range is it's best asset. It features eight lanes. The range is well lit and long. The wait to enter wasn't bad. I came in on a Saturday and was told I'd have a 45 min wait. I actually ended up waiting 10-15 min. Nice thing about an eight lane shooting range is the line moves pretty quick. The people that come here are usually regulars that enjoy shooting, so please don't be nervous, just respectful of your weapon and the people around you.

Yelp
This is a fairly accessible range not too far from Ft. Eustis. Depending on who you deal with, the customer service ranges from good to really great. They are very military-friendly and they offer free range access to military and law enforcement on the 1st and the 15th of every month (funny how that coincides with military payday). The range itself is not very hi-tech but very practical if all you want to do is practice your marksmanship. You are only allowed to shoot handguns here so no AR-15 practice allowed! Sometimes, there is a wait depending on the time of day/week. I went a few times during the summer and the ventilation was pretty awful. You will definitely have to blow your nose once you're done to get rid of all the gun powder residue. This place does the job though if you're itching to shoot.

Yelp
Probably one of the nicer and more organized civillian ranges on the Peninsula. I used to have membership here for a while and would practice almost every Sunday with my service pistol. The location is a nice size, they sell guns like rifles, pistols and revolvers. Theey also sell some other LE stuff and shooting accesories. I've been here for some of the DCJS classes years ago and I gotta say this place probably has the better instructors that wont put you to sleep, although the instructor at the time was kinda cocky...but he's an oldtimer so I'll let him slide I suppose. It's clean inside and doesn't look awfully run down like some places I've been to in Hampton and Va Beach. This place as others have said really caters to the military and LE folks which is always great. The staff is cool, I've never had a problem with any of them. You can also ship your firearms here as well if you don't wanna use QM off Denbigh. This is an indoor range which is decently lit and you should probably bring sweater since it gets kind of cold. On the website it says only 1 shooter per lane but that bs, I guess that just depends on how busy it is which if you go on the 1st or 15th, good luck since its free for LE and Military. The membership ranges anywhere from 125 to 175, which is a good bargain if you are a weekend shooter like me. I suggest you bring your own hearing and eye protection because the rentals are cleaned but not thoroughly enough. Overall, its a good place to go if you wanna shot your handgun for leisure not so much for a practical qualification standpoint because you aren't suppose to kneel and do things like that when you shoot.

Yelp
I drove there from Williamsburg but didn't get to shoot. Friday March 23, got there at 3pm and they said the range will be closing in 15mins for maintenance. I asked how much would it be for 15mins....it was still full price. It was very off putting to see a small business treat a customer like that. I always hated range elitists and wannabe tacticool noobs thinking their sh*t don't stink. "You wanna shoot here? Oh too bad for zero notice about the range closing early on a Friday. Still full price for you. Like it or leave it." I will never support small business! Budsgunshop and Costco all the way!

Yelp
Health hazard, severe ventilation issues. Still coughing from leaving the range. Can still taste the cordite in the back of my throat. Do not think about going if you have respiratory issues.

Steven L.

Yelp
Acceptable range but a combination of some safety concerns and our love for rifle shooting will keep us driving further next time. If you visit - make sure to bring your own PPE and include a face mask to compensate for the poor ventilation. We visited the Marksman on a Saturday morning for my mother in law to breakin her new glock 19. The $14 fee for a concealed holder and the proximity drew us in. Store impression: The store was clean, they processed people onto the range quickly and seemed ok on gun knowledge. We had some confusion since we brought our own targets and stapler (you never know) but they insisted we use one of their big targets and put our targets over it. Odd but their house, their rules. Range impression: The shooting facility is a bit dated. Ventilation is old, the target system is hand cranked with enough slack keeping the targets low and the lighting is dim. No RSO was present on the range during our hour but I assume they watch on cameras. The guys who came in before us must have been doing something, were paged off the line and not seen again. While we had a good time- two things will keep us from visiting again on our pistol only days. 1.) Inadequate ventilation - Exposure to lead dust is no joke. While uncasing my firearms another shooter turned on a wall mounted fan behind us. My mouth dropped at seeing the air clear as a huge visible cloud of smoke formed and drifted down range. Still when we got home- we were blowing black snot out of our noses and my wife said we reaked. I shoot at a lot of ranges and I can't recall seeing ventilation not keeping up with even a crowded fast shooting room. If I visit again, I'll be wearing a particulate mask or a filtered regulator. 2.) We kept getting hit by bullet fragments from other shooters missing the backstop. The slack in the target system wires led to many targets hanging low. Three groups weren't minding one of the four gun rules "Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It" and were routinely aiming for points near the bottom of their targets and hitting the floor.

Scott F.

Yelp
This is the most pathtic excuse of a gun shop ever seen. The customer service is horrible, over the phone and in the store. The guys behind the counter are so old they cant even stand up...much less strap on a gun. I ordered a gun online and they couldnt tell me what I ordered and when it was ordered. They have to look at my recept on phone bc they had no record of my order. It was like the gang that couldnt shoot straight. They straight up suck...
google avatar

Koichi E.

Yelp
This is a no-nonsense shooting range with very little amenities. My girl and I went to shoot because we were sitting in our vacation resort during a hot day wanting to do an indoor activity. Plus our trigger finger was getting itchy for some range time. We went in to the range after renting a Walther 9 mm and we were disappointed to find a hand crank target retriever. The heat was oppressive in the range at around 91 degrees according to the staff. Imagine that, a sauna and shooting range all in one. I lost a few pounds and shot a few hundred rounds to get my shooting time in.

Kevin M.

Yelp
I wish I could give it zero stars. This place has so many stupid rules like no head shots. If you want to shoot a 5.56 there, you must buy the ammo from them. They won't let you shoot lead ammo in any gun. I will never go back there!

Stephen H.

Yelp
Let me start this review stating the facts about my very limited yet eventful visits to the marksman.I want to be clear that I have never had the marksman handle a FFL transfer for me as I randomly picked them from a list of FFL dealers through a website I have used many times to order weapons from in the past. From the moment I walked through the door to the end of my visit I had this overwhelming sense of perceived bias from one of the older customer service reps working both days i visited this store. I filled out all of the information on the paperwork as I have done many times before without incident being sure to include my social security number to ensure a thorough background check. After entering my information the customer service rep informed me that my background check had been delayed and could take anywhere from 5 minutes-the maximum allotted number of days. As I was waiting I informed the customer service rep that I have purchased weapons in the past and have been delayed before so It was no problem if I have to come back another day to pickup my weapon. As I am explaining this I can hear the older man snarling and making gestures any normal person would perceive as disrespectful and unwelcoming at best. After spending an additional 30 minutes in the store I decided it would be best to return another day after I was sure the background check was complete. Within 1 hour I received a call from the young man who helped me with my transfer saying that my background check was complete and I could come pickup my weapon anytime. Upon returning several days later I entered the marksman to yet another unwelcoming atmosphere thanks to the same older man who was snarling at me last time I entered the store. I explained to him that I was here to pick up my weapon that I had already payed for and was approved for. After several minutes he retrieved my weapon along with the background check information and had a second separate associate from the original young man who helped me look over my paperwork that had already been entered and checked through the system. After having this person question me on irrelevant information on the background check like whether or not the Virginia hunting/fishing combo permit I used as a second piece of identification was legitimate or not(Obviously it was, I was approved through the background check system!) I was finally on my way. Worst experience ever. If more people would take the time to write reviews I would have never come to this business. Save yourself the headache, The Marksman is not offering any service you can't find somewhere else!

C S.

Yelp
Don't go there! Customer service sucks! We had bought a groupon to use. Didn't use it. Walked away after 25 minutes of being lectured why my personal gun didn't need three safety features. The older gentleman thought I needed a revolver. Don't like revolvers. We got lectured on gun ownership and children. They were going to fail me and not let us shoot at all testing me on a .38 that I had never used. I had asked for a .22. They said they didn't have any then pulled out a .22 a few minutes later. They were only going to give three of us one gun to share. That was not the terms of the groupon. Very condescending. Not female friendly. Will NEVER recommend this place to anyone.

Jason H.

Yelp
Lots of knowledgable staff on hand for questions my only concern was it was very busy when we went there and it seemed there was no direction for people who wanted to shoot or if they wanted to buy a gun or just get some info. I don't think that this would be a problem on a less busy day but maybe if they put up a sign for a shooting line it might make it easier. The other thing was, and this is a personal issue, but in the range itself the dividers don't go all the way to the ceiling. If you're not all the way to the left of everybody then sometimes brass from the shooter next to you can fly over the wall and hit you. Not a huge deal but just little things here and there. That being said I would absolutely come back!

Olivia M.

Yelp
Poor ventilation, poor lighting, antiquated control system. Would not recommend this range.

Brian M.

Yelp
Will not come to this range again. For ar-15 you have to buy their ammo to shoot on the range. Also the range has horrible ventilation and they have no range officers to regulate safty rules. I had a guy flag me with a gun a few times. I just packed up and left. I would recommend colonial shooting academy. They have a safer shooting environment. The prices for firearms at colonial shooting academy are 50-100 bucks cheaper than marksman. In all only public range I would recommend is C2 or colonial shooting academy. Stay away from this place.
google avatar

Ashly T.

Yelp
The staff was very friendly and for that I'd come back. However the range itself is falling apart. My automatic target was broken which I had to manually crank the target where I wanted it and just didn't seem like it was well taken care of. The price is good. 14$ and I had brought ear and eye protection and ammo, so not bad. The rules are typical beside no head shots. Which a range with not being able to do a head is not really a range. I like to practice how I work. I'm gonna look for another range but until I find another this one will do.

Steve D.

Yelp
Had a private lesson for my girlfriend and myself with steve. He was excellent. Explained saftey in basic terms and helped these first time shooters feel comfortable. He was firm enough to let us know these are deadly weapons and he is the boss but caring enough not to make us nervous. Perfect. Couldn't have asked for a better instructor or first experience. Next time in Virginia will definitely visit again. Staff was helpful as well looking up N.Y. Law for purchasing pepper spray.

Shanell S.

Yelp
horrible horrible horrible experience from the time we enter this place! customer service horrible! range is super hot! no ventilation! and unsafe!

Jim T.

Yelp
The Marksman is OUTSTANDING. Wonderful and friendly staff. Nice indoor range. I'm a retired law enforcement officer (34 years of service). I have been to numerous gun shops and firearms ranges. I HIGHLY recommend The Marksman.

Bill C.

Yelp
If you have not been to the Marksman recently go there and try the simulator they just installed. There is a separate room they constructed for the simulator equipment. It is an experience I have not had before and I do a lot of shooting. The live fire range has also been completely updated in the past month, including the lighting and all lanes are newly painted. They have done a nice job.

Matthew S.

Yelp
Dangerous range, I would not go there again if paid to do so. I had a year membership at this establishment but I chose not to renew it after being struck several times bye bullet fragments. When these events occurred I notified the range personnel and was usually just blown off and told it was "Normal" for an indoor range. After my year membership expired I decided to visit this range again a year later because its close to my residence and my wife and I had not been out in a while. I expressed my concern about being hit by bullet fragments to the staff before we were assigned a lane and said that i did not want a wall lane. There was only my spouse and myself on lane 4 "wall lane" and father/son group on lane 2. About 15min into shooting my wife steps up to shoot and before she can insert the magazine she is struck in the forehead by a bullet fragment from lane 2. She now has a large raised bruise on her forehead. There was one female staff member that went to check on her and offered her a "tissue". After notifying the staff, about 5 min later someone came out to look around the ground for the round that struck her. His response was "thats strange" and after 30sec of looking walked away without so much as an explanation or an apology. Pretty much got the i dont care attitude. Now I understand that an indoor range has some risks but to be repeatably "thumped" by rounds is unsatisfactory and dangerous. I can understand being hit by casings every now and then jumping over the lane partitions but to have rounds bouncing back this regularly shows they do not maintain there backstops. Overall there staff was not helpful and there range is extremely dangerous. I would highly urge anyone to find another place to shoot.

Yelp
I have been to a lot of shooting ranges all over the country- indoor and outdoor. This is by far, the WORST shooting range I have ever seen. It is small, poorly maintained, and the equipment doesn't work. You are so close to other people, you've got hot brass hitting you in the face constantly. I have been shooting weapons for over 15 years and this is the first time I actually felt afraid and wanted to leave. People in Virginia are retarded in the first place; when you put them close together and give them guns... just a bad idea. To top it off, the customer service was poor and it was expensive. $65 for the two minutes I spent on the range. Further, there was no one actually monitoring the range! They just had cameras going from the storefront to the range; so if something happened there is no way it could have been corrected immediately. The ammo was garbage (you can only shoot steel-any other type would tear up their little set up), and over priced as well. This place was a serious disappointment!
