Two Danny Meyer Restaurants Will Close by Late August | Eater NY

"A nine-year-resident pizzeria occupying the Redbury's lobby floor, Marta opened in 2014 when the hotel was the Martha Washington. The restaurant announced it will cease operations at the Redbury with its last night of service on Friday, August 25, explaining that housing asylum seekers has made hotel-related F&B operations — including event venues and the lobby bar — unavailable and undermined the viability of their business. The statement expressed admiration and respect for the Redbury's decision, said the restaurant remains supportive of the initiative, pledged to advocate for policy changes to expedite work permits for asylum seekers, and noted that Union Square Hospitality Group is committed to finding job placements for affected employees and new homes for the restaurants." - Melissa McCart

Although we had previously been to the Barter Theater across the street, this was our first time staying at The Martha Washington Inn. We had an exemplary time there. The room was nicely decorated with vintage furniture type pieces however with modern accommodations such as the climate control and shower area. Exploring the grounds is well worth the time and stop and talk to the people that work there. We spent awhile at breakfast with Karen (who had been there for well over 20 years and now only works 2 days a week in Sister's) after all the customers were gone, and had a remarkable time learning about the place and changes over the years!!! The location is perfect and there is many places to go within walking distance. Very friendly community and wonderful history.

We have been visiting The Martha for years and are so impressed with the upkeep. We love that we can drive up and leave the world behind. There’s no need to get back in the car until we leave - everything is at our finger tips, from three meals services (lunch service is new) to a fitness center, spa, indoor pool, boutique, outdoor (amazing) jacuzzi, putt putt, pickleball - not to mention many other food options, shopping, the creeper trail, and the Barter Theatre within walking distance. The management is exceptional as well, and will do all they can to ensure a great stay!

We ate at the Sisters Restaurant but we’re not staying at the Inn. The food was great, I ordered the burger and fries. Loved the burger, the fries not so much but everyone has their own favorite style of fries I guess. The restaurant was lovely and our server, Alicia, was fabulous. She was friendly and attentive and our orders were placed accurately. We enjoyed our visit to the Inn to eat dinner. Thanks Alicia!!

A bit pricy but worth it to get spoiled once in a while. Had a massage while here. Breakfast is basically an all you can eat!! Using an old building, elevators aren't always available so the have valet parking and staff to take your luggage to your room.

Great one night stay at the Martha Washington with my family (including our pups). The rooms were spacious, beautifully appointed, and comfortable. The staff were all extremely welcoming and helpful throughout the stay. The complimentary breakfast was superb and the restaurant for dinner, while the menu is limited, was excellent. We enjoyed using the mini golf course and walking through the town of Abingdon. Should our travels take us through Abingdon again, we will be sure to return!

My family of eight had dinner at Sisters at the Martha’s on Friday evening. We had a semi private room in the dining room. Our drinks and dinner were all delicious!|Marissa, our waitress, was awesome. Would definitely go there again!

The Martha Washington Inn is a beautiful establishment. The history is amazing. The amenities at the Inn are graet as well! The spa is a go to for us, the outdoor jacuzzi/hottub is amazing. Pickle ball and tennis courts are nice along with putt-putt and indoor pool. I think with so minor changes and some more attention to detail this would have been a 4.5 star review. My wife and I went for a weekend anniversary trip to enjoy the Inn and Spa along with the restaurant that is in the establishment. Upon check-in around 9:00 p.m. on a summer Friday night after driving 2 hours to get there we got into our room which was very nice and very historically restored however the temperature in our room was 79° due to the AC being turned off. I will say that after adjusting the AC the room did cool off to a comfortable 65. The mattresses we're very lumpy and uncomfortable to the point of us not being able to sleep well. The only other negative thing I would have to say is they need to spend a little bit of money on the items that are for use as far as tennis equipment and pickleball equipment as they were worn out and somewhat broken. I will say that they have a very convenient location to Bristol Tennessee and Bristol Virginia with just a short ride to shopping and the casino, also very close and convenient to Virginia's famous Creeper Trail.

Really cool place! Very welcoming and a great and friendly staff. Reasonable pricing decent food. Abingdon is a neat older town the retained a lot of charm. Facilties are pretty nice at the Martha with a decent gym, pool and Jacuzzi. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
The hotel room was mediocre, at best. The room was basically a poorly gentrified Motel 6. I was expecting something more colonial or historically accurate considering their history. EXTREMELY overpriced for what you get. -The Painted over peeling wallpaper says a lot. I wonder what's under it? -The comforter smelled like a gym locker room. So, definitely take it off before you bed down or bring your own. The Spa was nice and the restaurant was descent. And, please don't fall for that "haunted" Room 403 with the "phantom bloodstain". It's tourist nonsense. *NOTE: They DO NOT have any elevators or access for disabled or handicapped persons to use. So, if you're in a wheelchair/mobility scooter or have problems climbing stairs, you may wish to reconsider. Add photos

Yelp
This review is mainly focused on the staff members whom made our work meeting/retreat a seamless and enjoyable weekend, all of whom were incredible! During the planning process for our event, there were some employment transitions that initially made me concerned for the numerous requests our staff had made, however Tanya, Willie, Lisa and team all went above and beyond to ensure that our experience was great. We rented the ballroom for a meeting and numerous rooms, and everyone on our staff had nothing much good things to say about their weekend at the Martha. Breakfast was amazing both mornings I was able to enjoy it, and the complimentary evening port was a nice touch. I hope to come back and enjoy a stay without the work duty responsibilities- as I didn't get to partake in the spa, pool/jacuzzi or grounds. But next time!

Yelp
At the restaurant, Sisters they served us undercooked chicken (sliced so they should've seen it was undercooked). Also, they lied and said they can't seat people. I made a reservation online in front of them and they immediately sat us. They told us they couldn't seat us, so I went online and made a reservation. They immediately sat me after I told them I just made a reservation. The wait staff was so nice.

Yelp
The Martha Washington Inn and Spa is a wonderful destination in the foothills of the mountains in Abingdon, VA. Built in 1832, for General Robert Preston and his wife Sarah, the house later became Martha Washington College in 1858; a college for young women. The War between the States took a great toll on the college as it was taken over and used as a hospital for both southern and northern troops. The college survived the war, but the great depression was an event from which it could not recover. In 1935, The Martha Washington opened as a hotel. It went through several ownership changes and in 1984, a group of businessmen bought the property realizing what an impact the historic structure had on the city of Abingdon. Today, The Martha is a fabulous enterprise featuring a hotel, restaurant, and spa. Guests enjoy the nearby Barter Theatre, many shops, restaurants, and galleries, and of course the beauty of nature that surrounds the town; including the Virginia Creeper Trail. We were cordially greeted when we arrived and our check-in was smooth and hassle free. We immediately went to our room and settled in before touring the hotel and grounds. There is an enclosed pool, a full service spa, an outdoor jacuzzi waterfall, fire pit, tennis and pickle ball courts, and an 18 hole miniature golf course. The price was very reasonable for the amenities that were included and for being right across the street from the Barter Theatre that was the reason for our trip. Follow me on Yelp for more places to stay, things to see, and the best eateries around.

Yelp
Horrible customer service and lack of communication. I accidentally left my corporate card in my room and was promised it would be mailed out the next day and the tracking number be emailed to me. I even left my personal credit card information to pay for the shipping. Since my job depends on being able to access this corporate account, it was important that this was time-sensitive matter. I left an email, left a voicemail, and called the property 5 different times. I was given the run-around, no one had answers for me, and no one apologized. I had to call back the 6th time to talk to the Bellman Manager. He finally went to UPS and they had never sent the package. This was 7 days later. I work in sales and hospitality and this was such a disappointment and a detriment to my job. I ended up paying the shipping fee myself since no one at the property offered to cover the cost for the hassles of the situation. After paying over $350 for the one night stay, the customer service was lacking to say the least. -I found out the sauna was out of order after the front desk staff told me it was an available amenity. Yelp
My wife and I recently stayed here for our anniversary and the previous guest had left an open box of condoms in the drawer beside the bed. The room was obviously not properly cleaned or inspected prior our stay. when I notified a young lady working the desk. she just said sorry and that she would report it. Well, since I just reported it, that task had been accomplished. I advised her. I didn't feel that was satisfactory. She truly acted like it was no big deal. I would expect this type of occurrence at a motel 8, but not at the Martha Washington Inn. Needless to say, we were disappointed. We had really looked forward to staying here. I feel like the situation warranted more than just someone telling me they would report it.

Yelp
Paid for the Presidential Suite. One of the faucets didn't work. Spa was not a great experience and felt like I didn't get moneys worth. Spa desk fine. Masseuse and aesthetician on the sullen side. I had to get the missed spots of the full body scrub, and a full body massage with no glutes? I don't like talking during my services, but I felt like I was putting them out. I still gave an $80 tip to each of them, however. Not terrible, but not great at all

Yelp
A grand hotel in a charming small town. We have stayed here many times and always love the service and amenities. The Sisters Grill is has always been a favorite and is delicious. I had Osso Bucco and it was incredible. So tender and tasty.

Yelp
This place is wonderful - loved it. This Inn could be a destination in itself. The hotel is historic and gorgeous; it's retained its original style but with modern amenities. The grounds are beautiful, as is the surrounding area - full of history and charm. Plan better than we did. Make an appointment at the spa - I regret that we didn't. Pack swimsuits and use the indoor saltwater pool and the outdoor hot tub. We didn't pack for this, and I regret it. We would have been the only ones there :-( There are also tennis courts, mini golf and a gym. We had a deluxe king room, which was super spacious, and the bed was comfortable. The only downside was that the hotel is close to a railroad track, so we did hear the trains. Not exactly My-Cousin-Vinny style, but if you're a light sleeper, you'll wake up.

Yelp
Ok people read the reviews and understand either you accept this great lady as she is or you do not. Many other reviewers have mentioned the Martha's many charms. It is wonderful to sit on the huge porch and to explore the halls and the grounds. The rooms are all different and there is so much to look at and learn about her past. Go stay in a Hampton Inn if you have to make coffee in your room and have a USB port to plug your kid's ipad into. For the rest of us, we can walk up creaky stairs in sweltering heat and find that the ice machine doesn't work and still be glad we came. Yeah it's expensive. And yeah the ice machine should work and our room AC was wonky. The sheets were worn etc. I still loved it's character and would gladly come again. Give it a try.

Yelp
Wonderful time with my family. Great service, wonderful building, tasty food. Will return when in town.

Yelp
I love this hotel. It has so much history to it. The rooms are lovely. There are pictures on the walls of the young women who lived there when it was a women's college. During the Civil war it became a hospital that tended to both Confederate and Union wounded soldiers. The pool is massive. It's gorgeous and should be in a movie. There is a Gazebo and garden outside that makes one feel as if you're back in time. The service is wonderful. The ladies at the receptionist desk are friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant on the premises which is very nice. They have a dress shop, spa and state of the art work out room. Highly recommended! You might bump into a famous actor because there's a well known theatre in Abington, VA where many actors go to work on their craft in plays.

Yelp
Nice stay! Here for 2 nights and everything is good. Front desk is friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nice in the Sisters restaurant. Was here for Valentine's Day and had dinner at sisters restaurant. Very very good!! Would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
Beautiful historic hotel packed with exquisite antique furniture and interesting artwork. My wife and I were visiting family in a couple nearby towns and my father-in-law surprised us by putting us up here in the President's Wing. We stayed in a Junior Suite Kind Bed room, which was large with a comfortable bed, a sitting area, and beautiful antique furnishings. The bathroom area was a bit tight, but that's what happens sometimes when modern amenities are shoehorned into historic buildings. The shower was a dual-head tile step-in shower with a warming light and upscale toiletries. Aside from the amazing room, the building and grounds are incredible. The restoration job on this property is impressive and the furnishings are top-notch. My wife and I spent time every day we were here just walking around. It's like staying in a museum. The Sisters Restaurant deserves special mention. We had drinks, late night apps and drinks, and a breakfast at the restaurant and all were excellent experiences. The wine list was nicely balanced and well curated. We were told that the restaurant usually is not open in January, but that they were trying it this year with a simplified menu. We were happy this was the case and enjoyed every second of it. The indoor salt water pool and heated outdoor salt water hot tub are things we wanted to try, but didn't have bathing suits with us or in any local stores, so we had to pass. My wife used their state-of-the-art gym one morning and loved it. The treadmills, ellipticals, bikes (including a Peloton that you can use even if you don't subscribe), free weights, and machines are all high-end, even by club standards (Lots of Life Fitness and True). We did not get a chance to partake of the spa facilities. Perhaps next time. If you're in the area and need a nice place to stay, I highly recommend the Martha Washington Inn and Spa.

Yelp
Beautiful decadent hotel. Peaceful, calm, clean and full of details. The service was amazing, courteous staff await your call and need. When the bar is closed the front desk will have wine to serve (and affordable too). Amenities are great. Salt water pool is 24 hours, with a lovely outdoor hot tub. Mini golf and tennis are fun additions. The gym is fully equipped with state of the art equipment, I only used it one day but it was nice to have a complete gym. The Spa is nice, although i personally think it should be open and available more hours of the day (if you suddenly feel like a treat after tennis). Make sure you book the restaurant early as it gets filled up quick, or you can hit the bar area. The whole restaurant/ bar is a beautiful lounge style place with very comfortable seats. Service was good as well. Decent cocktails. Limited but delicious food. Appetizers are not as good. Dessert was amazing, the bread pudding was perfect. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Very nice luscious beds. But the TV's are old and SD, so don't come for TV viewing, you'll be disappointed. The beds are comfortable, but I think they need new pillows, they were small and a little uncomfortable. Shower has strong water pressure with great smelling and smooth feeling soaps. Although I thought the bathroom was a little small. Hotel in general is very clean, doesn't have that musty smell from old houses. The attention to detail in the decor is superb. They have an elevator but I suggest taking the various stair cases as these are not your typical Hilton stair case. Every hallway, stair case, landing and area has art and history with even one modern painting hallway that offered inspiration to the eyes. Overall, excellent stay. I plan to come back.

Larry-Lyola Olds R.

Yelp
NOT a luxury hotel (room price/night $300) just an experience of staying in an historical Inn. The rooms were not freshened, had to retrieve fresh towels from the reception desk. Coffee not available in room, but had to go to lobby and make it. Had to get additional water bottles from reception desk. Two bottles of water in room without glass/paper cups from which to drink. Complimentary port wine served at reception desk in plastic cup similar to hospital pill cup (wine was good). Sisters Restaurant food was adequate, but napkins had holes in them. Restaurant staff were excellent, but had to verbally tell us that although the breakfast was complementary, their gratuity was not (really tacky-reminder should have been on a table tent). This was our 60th anniversary trip and was very disappointed with the hotel. Everything else in Abington was great!

Yelp
Very nice, historic hotel. Older place, but is has been meticulously kept up, inside and out. Staff was excellent, very professional and helpful. The rooms are well appointed, plenty of space. The beds are wonderful - slept great. Internet works well. My only grip comes from the restaurant - they "lost" our reservation. We did get promptly seated, but the service was painfully slow - 30 minute wait for a martini?

Yelp
I was here for an out-of-town wedding from 3/28-3/30. 1) At The Sisters bar, Suzanne & Jen are THE BEST bartenders. On 3/28 Suzanne catered to my huge family with an upbeat attitude. I even asked for tea that night expecting a mug with some hot water and a teabag...instead I got a whole pot and a mug. Suzanne didn't seem to mind and brushed off my apologies for any inconvenience. Jen was my bartender on 3/29 and she was an absolute sweetheart. She was talking to my sister and I like we were old friends--but she didn't neglect any guests, she did her work efficiently! She also made me the greatest White Russian ever with Reese's infused vodka! I highly recommend you try that. 2) The food at the wedding was rather bland. I had a chicken dish that was not very warm and left much to be desired. The greenbeans as the veggie had more bacon on them than there were beans. I'd say the salad was the best part. 3) The free continental breakfast is kind of a joke. Considering the rate for our room was about $200/night, I was expecting a few options (I mean, at lesser chain hotels I've been offered bagels, muffins, even waffles, or other simple foods). Here it was a small container of one flavor of yogurt (which I am allergic to), mini muffins, or other petite pastries...the spread of options was on one dinner plate it seemed. Luckily you can also order breakfast. The french toast I had was delicious. 4) Overall I thought that the price of everything was pretty steep. At the wedding reception beer & wine were hosted, however a small glass (with a lot of ice) with well liquor was $7 and name liquor was $10. Maybe I'm just picky, but when I was thinking about the price they were going to end up getting per bottle for things the mark up kind of blew my mind. 5) The hotel itself is beautiful. Lots of history all around you. There's a library next to the front desk that you MUST check out. It looks like a library/parlor straight from a magazjne.

Yelp
Fantastic hotel! I brought my two out of control baby boys with me. And everyone here has been utterly gracious and kind to them and us. The hotel is absolutely stunning on its own but the staff has made it feel like home. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful, with a surprisingly modern menu. I was blown away arriving at this small historic town to find a hotel so welcoming.

Yelp
Such a charming hotel. Staff couldn't be nicer! Britt at the front desk couldn't be more accommodating! Welcomed with a glass of port wine and helped us with our bags. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Enjoyable evening out on the porch with fellow travelers and free wine. I LOVE. the library, pool and made to order breakfast. The Inn has a van ( Bicycle rentals too) that takes you to top of creeper trail so you can coast downhill. Make theatre reservations in advance

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary and her birthday in Abingdon, electing to stay at "The Martha." I had made pre-arrangements with the staff to have chocolate strawberries in the room when we got there. This did not happen. When I went to talk to the staff about the issue, I was told that, "well, at least you won't be charged for them." Obviously, the charge wasn't the point. Before making reservations, I had called a month and a half in advance to take advantage of their Barter Theater package. When I called, I was told that they did not have the January schedule yet and to call back on January 2nd. I confirmed that there wouldn't be any issues with waiting another two weeks to book and was told it would be fine. When I called back, I was told they do not do packages for the months of January and February and I would have to buy the tickets on my own. Now, since it is two weeks later, the best seats are long gone, I was lucky to get any. I also asked about the dinner for our stay and was told that I could make reservations for dinner once we arrived. Come to find out, the restaurant wasn't even open. I did inquire about their "VIP Tickets" listed with the package - all it is is Barter Theater's "Best Available" seats - nothing else. There was also no refrigerator in our room, which would have been very nice to know prior to our arrival; however, the staff was helpful in allowing us to use their refrigerator to keep the cake for our celebration. All in all, not worth the price or hassle. Very disappointed.

Matthew W.

Yelp
We loved our two-night visit. We so appreciate efforts to maintain the "old school" feel, without being fake, while accommodating modern conveniences like bathrooms and workout facilities-- so nice to find a hotel that invests in beautifully-tiled shower stalls! Exceptional landscaping with well-kept gardens and waterfalls. Tennis and pickle ball, saltwater pool, jacuzzi, and spa-- all right on site, and the rightly famous Virginia Creeper Trail is about three minutes away. No chance to try dinner at the restaurant as it was closed the nights we were there. If breakfast was an indicator, I'm sure it would have been delicious.

Yelp
Not impressed with this pedicure. no cuticles or scrub treatment. I'm a nurse and I need that in my life!!!

Yelp
My husband and I came for a couple of days to relax and see a play and wanted to try this historic inn. It is a very beautiful building and facility. The lobby was decorated spiritedly for Halloween-- very cute! No one offered to help us to our room, which we had difficulty finding. In fact, we had difficulty finding anything here. There are few directional signs, and it is quite a twisty turny place. One of the employees mentioned that the owner did not like signs. We had a king deluxe room overlooking the roof of another building and a parking area. There were not enough outlets -- we had to unplug unneeded things to plug in our electronics. The lightning was insufficient for reading, and the chairs were very uncomfortable. I tried reading in the lovely library downstairs, but it was much too warm in the room. I scheduled a 45 minute pedicure in the spa. I only received an express pedicure. When I said something to the receptionist, she said she would just change my bill. The express pedicure was not worth the money. She just trimmed my nails and slapped some polish on and told me to go down to the pool to let them dry (humidity in the pool area was about 100 percent). Breakfast is included in your price. They have a very limited menu. They basically have eggs and bacon, and I wanted something simple like a bagel and fruit. The scrambled eggs were over cooked and tasteless. I would rather pay and get something I want. This Inn is very expensive, and in my opinion not worth the price.

Yelp
I haven't even had the pleasure yet of staying at the Inn. The reason I'm leaving such a review, is that the Manager of the Inn was so helpful with our cancelled reservations. My employer and I were planning to stay there, and unfortunately there was a family emergency that arose unexpectedly. I was so concerned about cancelling not only the rooms we had for several days, but also our spa appointments, since it was so last minute... I'm VERY grateful for them working with us, and we plan to reschedule for later in the month. Thanks so very much again! Your kindness in all this does not go unnoticed....

Yelp
Beautiful Hotel, but be cautious if booking a big event. The good: The food was consistent and delicious for a 230+ person wedding. Breakfast was delicious as well daily and was included with the rooms. The valet team was fantastic, friendly, and helpful. There were a handful of really helpful wait staff that were working hard to ensure we had a great stay and wedding reception as well. The overall cost of the event was not completely unreasonable. The event was beautiful and the guests had a fantastic time. We had the parlor, porch, backstage, and ballroom. The bad: The ballroom A/C could not keep up with the large group and read 78 degrees during the reception. There was considerable sweating. Additionally, the wedding coordinator and manager were not what you would expect from a high-end venue. I'll list details below of specific concerns to consider--communication was certainly the biggest challenge. I found the process of hosting a wedding for 230+ people to be unnecessarily stressful when reality did not meet what had been discussed at length in planning meetings. The draw for us to this venue was that we would not have to worry about the finer details, but this was not the case. Customer service and recovery skills fell short of what is seen in comparable hotels and venues. Communication was exceptionally poor. A few of the larger issues are as follows: 1. Room Blocks were not completed as we discussed and many wedding guests had to seek accommodations elsewhere due to the miscommunication. The block given was smaller than was discussed in initial meetings. 2. The bridal suite was described as having two large bathrooms for the wedding party to get ready in and was discussed at length during our first visit with Wendy, the wedding coordinator. Upon check in, we were placed in a lovely, but small suite with a single, dark bathroom with one sink. When the concern was raised, we were told that the hotel was completely full and no other rooms were available. This caused major concern and unfortunately turned out to be completely untrue. One of our groomsmen was placed in the wrong type of room when he checked in later that day and when he went back to the front desk, he was upgraded to beautiful king suite in the center of the hotel that we had been told did not exist. He called and traded with us immediately. Additionally, housekeeping stated the another suite was empty on the floor above us. Whether the event coordinator was working with poor information or not, the situation was exceptionally unfortunate. When you are spending the amount of money we spent on a large wedding at a high-end venue, the regretful decision not to rely upon basic service recovery in this situation was unacceptable. 3. We met and discussed the need for additional bars, bartenders and specific food and beverage options when we placed the deposit. When we received the detailed document, there were errors on every page as if we had not met at all. I honestly thought we had been sent someone else's paperwork. As the deadline was approaching I phoned a with the request for a return phone call to discuss details and to ask questions. Those calls were followed up via email from the coordinator with the promise of return phone calls that didn't come. This happened twice. As the deadline for final paperwork neared, I received an email request for us to sign the incorrect paperwork that was highly unprofessional. It was sent with demands in ALL CAPS and exclamation points on nearly every line of the message from the wedding coordinator. I phoned the hotel manager and shared my discomfort with the situation. Chris listened and stated that he hadn't heard of any issues before, but promised to speak with the coordinator and call me back later that week on Friday. That call never came. We were an out of town couple and had to take off work and drive over two hours from our home to complete the paperwork in person. While I really did enjoy the wedding itself and the gorgeous setting, a lot was left to be desired.

Yelp
If you need a place to stay in Abingdon , you could do a lot worse than staying at the Martha Washington Inn. It isn't modern. It isn't new but it this is place will show you what hospitality in Southwestern Virginia is all about. The Sisters Restaurant is always consistent and does great service. Of note - the creme brûlée was excellent. The sugar top was obviously not done with a blowtorch. I could have eaten 3 of these!!

Yelp
Didn't stay here but very nice hotel. We looked around and there is history throughout the main floor. The floors freak pretty good and it was interesting just to see the history within the place. Great looking pool and nice porch. Great library also. Did call about rooms but it was pricey.

Yelp
Dingy, dusty and haunted. Bed looked like it was never changed upon arrival. No booze served after 9. Go to The Bristol which is where we should have stayed.

Yelp
My family and I stayed here over Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful experience. The rooms were spacious and the food delicious. Although the offerings for the continental breakfast were limited, they were also fresh -- freshly baked muffins and scones. There was the option to purchase a full hot breakfast. I do not understand the complaints in some other reviews about these two options. The complimentary port in the lobby was lovely. I stayed here once about 10 years ago, before the spa existed, and at that time there was a decanter of sherry in every room. This seems like a nice substitute. The cleaning staff was top notch. Really very gracious and polite. The outdoor hot tub and fire pit were blissful. The hot tub in the snow was an unparallelled treat. The indoor salt water pool was never crowded and was the perfect temperature. I loved that although the rooms are expensive, they do not nickel and dime you for wifi, bottled water, in-room snacks (there were many, candies and crackers, plus delicious fresh cookies and tea in the library downstairs, all complimentary) as so many higher end hotels inexplicably do. I agree with the reviewer who said his or her elderly relatives should not have been put on the fourth floor where the elevator doesn't reach. I would have pursued that further at the time of check-in, and asked for a manager -- it sounds like there was a young, inexperienced clerk manning the desk that day. That happens in small towns. The person who complained that no valet lept to help them with their bags must realize these valets are young folks, recent local high school graduates from Abingdon, and not the trained career professionals you will see at a high end hotel in New York City, where you will be paying for than three times as much to stay. If you wanted help with your bags, it would have been appropriate to ask. I found all the staff at the hotel to be responsive and polite. Overall, we could not have had a better stay.

Yelp
The inn itself is very nice, but they need a totally new restaurant. We ate lunch at Shoney's that day and dinner at The Martha that night before going over to the Barter. I felt the food at Shoney's was actually better. Need to step up your game.

Yelp
A good spa! Had an hour hot-stone massage with Betsy and she did an amazing job. Really nice lounging and shower area, robes and towels. 15% gratuity automatically added and lots of parking in the back. Bummer that the restaurant, Sisters, isn't open for lunch.

Yelp
Overall, it is a beautiful hotel with lovely gardens. Unfortunately, my room needed a refresh. The bed was worn out and not comfortable. They attempted to put a mattress cover on top, but it didn't help. The wallpaper near the air conditioner was peeling off. The AC was very loud and rattled. With this combination, I did not sleep that night. This was not worth the whomping price tag.

Yelp
This grand hotel used to have a fantastic reputation, and used to be just that - grand. It's still very pretty inside, but they are not easy to deal with and there is no room service. Or even coffee in the room. I was there for my wedding night and had high hopes. There was no room service for breakfast and not even a coffee machine in our room. We had to go down to the lobby to use their dysfunctional, tiny, keurig machine. And possibly have a disappointing "continental breakfast" in the restaurant, which consisted of shrink wrapped commercial pastries. We did not stay for that! So not what we expected from this place - especially for what we paid for our suite!! On top of that, some friends of ours had arranged for champagne, berries and a cheese board to be waiting for us in our room. My friend said she had to call numerous times because no one ever returned her call and she kept being passed around. The cheese board never showed up and she still has not been able to get anyone on the phone that could give her a credit for that. The front desk clerk is supremely unhelpful. So disappointing!!! We had thought we might come back for a night during the holidays, but I refuse to pay $500 a night again for what we got. Not worth your money!

Yelp
Went for the easter weekend to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail. This is a beautifully restored and enlarged antebellum home with huge rooms, lovingly tended. The staff was courteous and thoughtful. We had a spa package that included dinner one night in the hotels "Sisters" Restaurant. The meal was outstanding. The spa has recently been enlarged. There is a delightful perfectly heated indoor pool and two large comfortable jacuzzi tubs outside. Our only less than optimal experience was a problem with the facial treatment equipment. Another treatment was substituted and the balance pending was refunded. After dinner sherry in the library free for guests is a nice touch. The beds are comfortable. The place is spotless. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is incredible. I stayed here with my mother over a weekend for a wedding (whose reception was held at the Martha Washington) and I can't say enough good. Here's why you should stay here: 1) Extremely clean. Seriously, their housekeeping is the best of the best. Not only were the rooms completely spotless, but the hotel itself has this amazing smell to it (the fresh and clean smell which you can tell takes alot of work) 2) Staff. The staff was courteous and professional. They left us alone to wander the Inn, but were very friendly when we needed help with something. 3) The layout of the rooms. First off, I love the decor of the rooms. They kept them historical, while adding modern amenities like these amazing walk in showers. I really liked the lighting in the rooms, between the gorgeous natural light and the soft light of the various lamps. 4) The bedding. Besides the bedding being extremely clean (i'm a stickler on that), the beds were some of the best I've ever slept in. If I could take one home, I would. 5) The store inside the hotel was great. It was nice, yet affordable. Great taste. The only two little things I would point out is that our bathroom didn't have a vanity, which made it extremely difficult to do hair and makeup. Also, the valets could use better training. We weren't greeting when coming or leaving, sometimes they were no where to be found, and just didn't give off that welcome vibe. However, those are relatively unimportant things and don't affect my view of the Inn at all. STAY HERE!!

Yelp
Was a super nice place! Loved the history on the walls and reading things from the past. Was nice sitting in the library and just relaxing with a book. Highly recommend it! If you are catching a show at Barter theater don't hesitate to stay here or at least eat at the restaurant.

Yelp
Lovely old hotel in a cute town. We were there a few days after they reopened. Very nice staff. Restaurant was great and were very nice to let us eat outside on the big front porch. Special thanks to Britt at the front desk.

Yelp
Beautiful historic property with lush grounds. The salt water pool and outdoor spa are fantastic. The dining room was closed for dinner however the breakfast was delicious. The hotel staff were welcoming and very accommodating. If I had to complain about something I would say that some maintenance issues need attention..peeling wallpaper, aging carpet and drapery etc. We will visit again.

Yelp
We've stayed in top hotels around the world and staying in a boutique hotel is a different sort of experience but our stay at The Martha was an exceptional experience. My wife and I discussed or trip afterwards and we both had the same observation. Every single interaction we had at the hotel and in Abingdon was characterized by a friendly, personal interaction. From each of the desk clerks, to our waitresses in Sisters, to manager of the Barter Theater who took the time to give us a tour, to the older couple we helped install an America flag on their porch, to the guy walking his dogs and hailed us from across the street, to lady who ran an ice cream/tea store, etc. Every single one. We ate four meals in Sisters and they provide an excellent complimentary breakfast to each guest which was a surprise. The dinner fare was only so-so though. The hotel provides complimentary port wine in the evening. The library in the hotel is beautiful and we very much enjoyed our family discussions over a few ports after dinner. A big thank you to the staff for making our stay enjoyable.

Yelp
This is a wonderful old fashioned styled hotel with a modern amenities, and I believe to be the best place in town. The rooms brings back the charm, as does all of the hotel, of yesteryear. In the evenings there is complementary Port Wine in the library and in the mornings complementary continental breakfast in Sister's (the hotel's restaurant) for those not wanting a full meal. The exercise-fitness room, pool and spa are top-notch. You won't be disappointed. We especially enjoyed the way the look of the hot tub blended in with the environment giving it the appearance of a pond with a small waterfall, nice touch. Sister's restaurant is wonderful. The layout of the dinning area with four semi closed booth spaces accommodating parties up to 8 that line the wall are elegantly done and add to the ambiance. The food was equally as good. My only complaint would be a larger menu because this chef can cook! Overall: I've been here twice. Stayed once in a standard room and other in a suite both are equally comfortable. The size being the only major difference, which means every guest is treated fantastic..I know everyone that I traveled with would attest to that. I can't see myself staying anywhere else when visiting the area, 5 Stars!

Yelp
Tonight I stayed at this hotel. At 950 pm I had to a make because it was very loud with guests. The operator was as rude as can be. I stay in hotels very night. Lifetime at Hilton so know. Unacceptable. Now second complaint telling me they didnt hear anything and was out door with all noise and called them out on it.

Yelp
We stayed two nights in June and we were very disappointed. The rates were outlandish for the service we received. The room we were given was okay, but it needed updating and it had a funny odor The floors squeak all over the hotel, like a creaky old haunted house.. My wife had her hair done by Janna and it was cut shorter on one side than the other - quite noticeably so! Janna kept cutting and cutting despite my wife telling her she didn't want much cut, just a trim because she was letting it grow out. It's short now so it will take a while to grow out. Oh, boy. Never again! The salon is dirty around the corners and the staff are not pleasant and do not greet you. The cashier had the nerve to ask how much gratuity we wanted to add! She put us on the spot, so my wife added gratuity, begrudgingly. The dining room is dingy and dirty and the decor is very worn and tatty. Fortunately, there are many good spots to eat around the local area. We won't be back.

Yelp
$315 per night? Really not worth that. Nice hotel with lots of history but mediocre rooms with very predictable "art prints" and furnishings of the kind often seen in more inexpensive lodgings. Layout of room was sort of silly, with the closet larger than the bathroom. TV reception very poor. No newspapers. "Free" morning coffe not set up for early birds. Staff was green, didn't follow through with requests for a basic room needs (when asked later, they said they were overwhelmed by the theatre crowd and "forgot.") The room was adequate, but for the money, not even close to what it should have been. If one is there for an overnight, the putt putt golf , swimming pool, and closed-on-Sunday spa add no value. We felt sort of duped. Ritz prices without a commensurate level of attention to detail. A captive audience does not justify lowered standards.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel and nicely appointed. We stayed Oct 28, 2014. Staff was unbelievably lazy and untrained...will stand and watch 90 yr old guests struggle with suit cases in the rain and then tell you they would have helped if you asked. Night clerk put my 2 aunts ( one 90 an one 86 ) on 4th floor where they had to walk up stairs..clerk told us she'd get in trouble for giving them a room on a lower floor with elevator. No signs showing where to check in and no one to meet us at driveway at 5pm arrival. Continental breakfast was lacking..not half as nice as Hampton Inn or Best Western. Dinner was expensive. ..Suggest eating out. Port in lobby was nice touch but the $10 resort fee was explained as a fee to cover amenities in room including in room coffee! This place is a joke. I do not suggest bringing elderly people here.

Yelp
Obviously, "The Martha" is not everyone's cup of tea. But as for us, The Martha IS the focal point of wonderful experiences in the Abingdon area. At the top of the list is getting "The Barter Theatre Package" (for 2) offered by the inn AND including a performance at the fine professional theatre just across the street! This DEAL also includes a THREE COURSE DINNER at Sisters Restaurant at The Martha... and the continental breakfast the next morning. We have been enjoying this excellent deal regularly for many years! The Barter Theatre is the STATE THEATRE of VIRGINIA... a professional theatre with a long colorful history of fine performances to appeal to many tastes and all ages. I encourage everyone to visit its website and explore offerings of this wonderful cultural treasure: bartertheatre.com. I realize that some people do not recognize the difference between a "continental" breakfast and the "complimentary" breakfast served in variations at some hotel chains. FWIW, continental has always meant some sweet rolls, cereal, juice, coffee, and maybe fruit and/or yogurt. As for the complimentary breakfast at MOST motel chains... eggs&meat on par with fast food breakfasts plus "continental" inclusions. Yes, Sisters has burgers on the menu... but it is more than a burger joint. There is a full menu of great entrée offerings (maybe a bit pricey for Abingdon, but on par with fine dining in the big city of Charlotte, NC). Our Sisters dining experience this trip was excellent. Our reservation was for 6PM, and we told our server we were going to the Barter for a 7:30PM performance. She thanked us for telling her AND proceeded to serve us attentively and efficiently so we were able to fully enjoy our 3-course meal unhurried and yet depart for the theatre by 7:15PM! Appetizer (chosen by both of us): Fried Green Tomatoes (stack of 4 slices) done nicely and as good as I've had anywhere... a bit different, too. The green tomato slices were stacked on top of thin layers of sauteed baby spinach in a light sauce... both seasoned perfectly. The FGT were also topped with crumbled goat cheese which added a nice tartness and was complimented by a sweet port wine reduction drizzled on the serving plate before plating. ALL GONE X2. Wedge Salad (wife's choice): A very generous salad with blue cheese and crisp bacon bits. It must have been delicious because my wife finished nearly all of it knowing that her entrée was yet to come. Crab Bisque (my choice): I was hesitant to order this INLAND, and I do love crab soups which I judge by my expectations set by Charleston, SC, restaurants. As I told the waitress after finishing it: "Compliments to the chef. This crab bisque was excellent! As good as I've had anywhere at the coast." Entrée (chosen by both): The filet mignon, prepared to order... served atop a browned potato cake, topped by a blue cheese cream sauce, and a 3-inch high stack of crispy thin onion strings. Grilled zucchini and yellow squash on the side. Amazing... generous 8-oz fillet cooked perfectly, very fine blue cheese cream sauce, and you won't find better crispy onion strings anywhere. As I said earlier, the a la carte prices might seem pricey to some, BUT this meal alone would have cost us just about as much as the listed menu prices if eaten in Charlotte or Charleston. Definitely a $90-100 dining experience & worth it! So let's get the full picture of the Barter package: one of the comfy clean well-furnished rooms at the historic inn for the night, 4PM port in the library, two 3-course meals, two tickets to the Barter Theatre (excellent seats according to lady who seated us), two continental breakfasts the next morning, any snack/water/ice requests delivered to the room (no charge), plus Keurig coffee & tea in room. Quaint creaky floors, library resources, historic artifacts, front porch comforts, and other inn amenities included. A special experience where old George Washington himself slept... for about $250! Valet service IS always available in turn! Or I could have stayed cheaper for $100-130 out by the interstate, paid $80 for Barter tickets I got myself, got breakfast at Mickey's for $10, paid about $50 or so for dinner for two elsewhere in Abingdon, done without the port in the library (and porch rocker)... and paid $240-$270 total without any historical charm, with a drive and parking search for the theatre, and had a room that would not have had the comfort and convenience of The Martha. I have not used the pool or spa at the inn, but I have friends who have and did not have the same poor experiences some have mentioned. Perhaps those amenities are not consistently good OR bad. There is a miniature golf course on the property, and assistance to enjoy the Virginia Creeper Trail by bike if you choose. Thanksgiving at the Martha is FABULOUS... the meal is memorable! Shopping art and antiques in Abingdon is worthwhile fun. Check into the Highlands Festival in early August, too.

Yelp
The hotel and the location is very charming. Even though I had no option, but I'm glad the company that I came for 2 days to see reserved my stay here. My only gripe, which probably is common in a small town, there was no late night food service or a snack shop anywhere for me to get food. Unfortunately I arrived at 12:30 A.M. due to missing my flight, there was nothing around for me to go eat, so I put my alarm on at 7:00 A.M. to not miss the continental breakfast, I was starving. Needless to say, the continental breakfast was a joke. 1 tier of either a muffin or a lemon pound cake. Not even bagels, toast, just yogurt and your choice of 2 muffins. I asked if they had eggs and bacon and they said, I would be able to order from the menu, which I did and it cost me $12.00. I had no choice, I was already dying from hunger. The room was comfy and the amenities were great, a Kurig coffee maker and Aveda body products. They really need to add a snack kiosk somewhere just for last minute, late night munchies!

Yelp
Don't visit the hair salon. I just recently had my hair cut and colored at the Martha for the first time. A stylist named Jenna did my hair. WORST COLOR AND CUT OF MY LIFE!! I have streaks and stripes all over my head where she messed up AND she chopped my hair all to pieces when I told her I did not want layers. I have cursed her name every day since when I'm trying to fix my hair. Can't believe I paid $145 for this horrible mess. Will NEVER go back there.
