9 Hidden Gems Around Fort Lauderdale to Try Right Now

"Home cookin’ has reigned at this cozy joint since its opening in 2020. It’s a bit of a woody, wood-paneled vibe inside, with a small bar serving non-pretentious beer and wine. Beyond daily specials, its Monterey Jack-oozing southwest egg rolls and white gravy-topped country fried chicken have earned their places on the permanent menu." - Jesse Scott

Google
Great food and service. The Mason Jar Pub offers a fantastic casual atmosphere that's warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal. The food here is consistently great, with standout dishes like the Mahi fish fry that is perfectly cooked and flavorful. I also highly recommend their sweet potato fries and the fresh selection of salads, which complement the meals wonderfully. One unique touch is their drinks served in mason jars, adding to the cozy and fun vibe of the place. The service is attentive and friendly, making every visit enjoyable. A great spot for comfort food with excellent service

Google
Great place to hang out for a light bite, a drink and app at the bar, or a heavier delicious meal, whatever you choose. The wraps are great, the salmon and vegetables are delicious, and the sweet potato fries were cooked up perfectly. Our server, Grace, was excellent too! Even the outdoor seating area in the middle of a hot day wasn't so bad with several strong fans keeping us cool. Can't wait to go back.

Google
Had lunch here with some friends. It was my first time here and I was pleasantly surprised. Nice menu, our server/manager was lovely. We tried the chili, very good. One of the best burger 🍔 I have had in a long time. Cooked to perfection, along with French fries.

Google
Having been a big fan of the Mason Jar restaurant, I was looking forward to my trip to Mason Jar Cafe. I certainly was not disappointed. The Pub is equal to the restaurant and I was delighted to see the roasted Brussel Sprouts with pistachios on the menu. I enjoyed those with the salmon and added a sweet potato. If you're looking for a diverse offering of great homemade food, a laid back environment, and absolutely stellar service, this is the place. It will be difficult to choose at which of the two restaurants I'll choose for my next Mason Jar trip. But I know that I'll have a wonderful meal at either the restaurant or the pub.

Google
I love this place so much. The food is on point 100% of the time. The burgers are the best in the city and affordable. I have had most of the menu and every time is is exceptional. This Is my go to place now. I go to the one on Oakland Park. ( two locations) I love the staff and the atmosphere is always excellent. Time to get served is very fast as the wait staff is lightening speed. I have only had great experiences here. You can bring your dog and your partner and everyone has a great experience. Love this place! Highly recommend. Do get the onion rings- you’ll thank me. R

Google
I had been driving past this place for many years and today my friend Amy suggested we go for lunch. I was thrilled, but not that hungry since I had a late breakfast. My bad! The place is tiny but adorable. Clean, a great atmosphere & decor - quaint but not over crowded. The service was just astonishing, they really kept an eye on us. Unfortunately, I could only share a plate of wings and sweet potato fries. The wings were tasty and fresh. The sauce was perfect, although the blue cheese dip seemed more like ranch. The sweet potato fries were so tasty - big thick cuts so you could actually taste the sweet potato goodness. I'm sorry I wasn't hungrier but I look forward to going back when I am. OH, and the prices are very very very reasonable.

Yelp
As soon as we walk in the door, the place is very warm and cozy. Great selection of wines and beer. The waitresses helped us right away and we are big wing fans so we ordered three different kinds of wings and the Chef sent out a couple extras for us to taste and needless to say they did not disappoint. Everything was amazing. I highly recommend the chicken and the pasta The lemon pepper wings were my favorite. My husband loves a lot of sauce, but I'm more on the dry side, but everything was delicious ! The way were cooked to perfection because that is the most important beside the sauce If you're in this area, I would definitely give this place to go. It is so cute and quant , reminds me of my home back in Alabama and the chef definitely knows how to put all those delicious flavors together everything we had was to die for and we will Be back !

Yelp
I had heard about this place and I am so glad I went. The place was busy when we arrived with all parking spaces taken in their private parking lot, so we had to park at another lot (the waitress was really good about telling us which spaces were OK to use). We got a table on the outside patio and it was really pleasant. The food was delicious....I had a blackened salmon with vegetables and I would get that again and again..... My husband got a grilled chicken Caesar salad which was also delicious and our friend Bob loved his Mojo Chicken. The service was prompt and the prices were very fair. The bill comes with pricing for cash and also for credit cards...they gladly do separate checks as well. A great spot for comfort food......although they do have many healthy choices....

Yelp
Been stopping by for years and never gave them props. A cute little place with outdoor and indoor seating. The best service without a doubt. Huge entree portions. Yummy soups and sammies. Tasty apps. I always try their soup of the day which today was shrimp & corn chowder. Decided to order the blackboard special: a spicy Thai chicken wrap. Fried chicken with a spicy slaw and lots of goodies. Mason Jar has the best sides. I chose steamed asparagus with bleu cheese. I could've eaten a plate of those for lunch. Dining companions had 1. bacon/cheddar burger 2. Waldorf salad. 3. salmon salad with beets and feta. A great lunch with good friends at Mason Jar Pub is a very nice day.

Yelp
We landed to Fort Lauderdale hungry and found this place on an Eater list less than a 30 min drive away. It was a quaint place where the waitresses knew their customers well. The menu looked American. We spot the southwestern egg rolls as they were advertised on the eater summary. It was very good accompanied by an elevating green sauce. My partner enjoyed his mahi sandwich with a cornbread side. I got the cobb salad which was huge with deliciously seasoned and grilled chicken, bacon bits and fresh avocado. I asked for light salad dressing which I'm happy I did as it was still on the heavy side. All in all, this was a great option by Fort Lauderdale (it says it's in Oakland).

Yelp
The Poblano Chicken Milanese sandwich at MJP is awesome. Here's the menu description of the sandwich: POBLANO CHICKEN MILANESE 14 on ciabatta with smashed beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado, Monterrey jack cheese and poblano mayo. They do need to update their website, as the sandwich now costs $15, bit still worth every penny. The coleslaw was nice and creamy with a little bit of sweetness to it as well. I'm definitely planning on a return visit soon to try some of their other items.

Yelp
This is a great little place for a quick , hardy lunch. The food was delicious. Had the BLT with avocado. This is the first time that I've ever had bacon perfectly cooked. The sandwich was large and they didn't skimp on anything. Everything was delicious, even the fries. Not fancy but a clean ,comfortable atmosphere with a very nice staff. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Unlike most folks, I'm not a big fan of their sister restaurant, the Mason Jar. I'd had a few not so good experiences there -- service and foodwise. So, I put off coming here thinking I'd be disappointed, as well. I can say wholeheartedly that this restaurant will now be one of my favorite places. We had a very good meal and service here. We came during the busy lunch hour. Almost every seat in the restaurant located on the south side of Oakland Park Boulevard was taken. Two seats opened at the counter, and we took them. This turned out to be a great vantage point to see all the different dishes coming out from the kitchen. Plus, we got to chat with our fellow diners and see what they were ordering and eating. We were greeted immediately and given menus. We ordered sodas and browsed the menus. My husband heard they had a meatloaf special and after getting a brief description ordered this. Meatloaf is one of his favorite dishes. A gal sitting next to me ordered their pork sandwich. It looked good on the menu, so I ordered this, as well. After ordering I found out that she'd never had this sandwich before, but that it had been recommended by the server. Our food came out fairly fast. His portion of meatloaf was large and came with two sides: his choice of mashed potatoes and gravy and corn bread. My sandwich came with my choice of one side: the corn bread. As the serving of meatloaf was quite big, I expected he'd eat half and take half home. He thoroughly enjoyed it. And ate every bit of everything on his plate. He said it was one of the best meatloaves he'd had. My sandwich was served on crusty bread. It was like an elevated Cuban sandwich. The copious amounts of chunky roast pork were fork tender. There was melted cheese and pickles on there, as well. The horseradish mustard was mild and moistened the sandwich. I might get the mustard on the side next time. The corn "bread" that we both got was amazing. It was a warm square that was more like corn pudding than bread. It was soft inside with lots of corn pieces. I should have taken an order of just this to go. One neighbor seated at the counter said I had to try their Brussels sprouts with pistachios next time. That's her favorite. They had a number of other daily specials on the board that also looked appealing. But the regular menu has lots of choices from soup and salads to wings and dinner entrees. Their fried chicken sandwich looked like it might have my name on it. We will definitely be returning back here. Great food and very good service. Can't wait to try more of their menu.

Yelp
How is it that I've been here a few times and yet I've never left a review? Shame on me. If you are familiar with The Mason Jar, located on Federal Highway, then this spot is like its little cousin. Here you will find some of the same favorites, especially as it relates to those amazing side dishes...to include the very much loved and adored brussels sprouts with pistachios. If you have never had the latter and you typically are not much of a fan of brussels sprouts, then please give this side dish a chance. If you still don't like these brussels sprouts, then you truly do not like brussels sprouts and that should settle that question. For lunch, you will find lots of sandwiches and wraps, along with a nice salad and soup selection. Be sure to check out the chalkboard on the back wall as it will list the soup and lunch specials of the day. Our server was efficient and friendly. Today, I enjoyed the blackened mahi sandwich. The fish was fresh and cooked well. We were able to be in and out quickly as we had a meeting to get to. Unlike its cousin on Federal highway, more than likely you will not have to wait for a table. At least that's been my experience when I have gone here for lunch. Inside, it's fairly small (quaint?) with some tables as well as stools along a lunch counter. The decor is homey and country-esque with cute little knickknacks on the walls. Outside, you'll find tables under a shaded canopy. There is a decent amount of parking here as well. This is a great little lunch spot and one I like to return to when in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Food and service always great. We take our visiting guests here and they always request to go back. A hidden gem!

Yelp
There is a part of me that doesn't want to write this review because i want to keep this place hidden, but it's too good! I've been 5 times in the last few months because it had been consistently delicious and the service is always impeccable . It's also the only place i know where you can still get 10 wings and fries for $10!! I stumbled upon this spot after driving down Oakland and wanted to give it a shot. Small little side of the road spot, but comes with lots of charm. 6-8 tables inside, a bar and 6 tables outside. We prefer to sit inside due to the spot being right on Oakland so the noise can be a little much. The first time i went, i got the wing special. 10 crispy, meaty, flavorful wings with a huge portion of fries for $10!!! What a deal! I went with hot, teriyaki, minced garlic (my go to triple threat) expecting an up charge for mixing flavors and/or minced garlic but nope! Just $10!! Another time, the special was a shrimp poboy. 5-6 jumbo shrimp, lightly breaded, crunchy and seasoned unbelievably well. Topped with fresh veggies, mayo and the bread couldn't have been better! Again, served with a PILE of fresh fries I'll also throw some love at their jalapeño poppers. Normally i expect a jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese/nacho cheese battered and fried. These are SO much better. It's almost like a piece of cheese with diced jalapeño in it, battered and fried. So crispy and then dunked in the ranch? YES PLEASE! I try and go back whenever I'm in the mood for wings or just want a good, solid meal. I'll be back as long as they are open!

Yelp
I was always a fan of Mason Jar Cafe. When I discovered Mason Jar Pub, which is a little closer and has a convenient drive thru, it became my go to place. The food is great, there's usually enough for two meals (unless I'm really hungry). I especially like the salmon (salad and entree), the mojo chicken, the steak sandwich, so many good things. The staff is amazing, very friendly. There is inside and outside seating. Stop by and check it out. You'll be glad you did!!
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Consistently good food. The shrimp chowder is one of my all time favorite soups. I love the drive through window for pick up - makes it our go to spot.
google avatar

Luis F.

Yelp
This little gem has great home style American eats. The chicken fried steak I ordered was huge, flavorful and great sides too. Everyone I was with loved everything. I heard the ribeye is next level! I have to try that next time. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Benjamin L.

Yelp
This little offshoot of the venerable Mason Jar serves less expensive, just as good versions of some of the Mama Bear's favorite dishes, like the excellent chicken fried chicken and the corn spoon bread that could be a dessert or a vegetable, it's so good. They do it with attentive service in a humbler setting, and offer lots of sandwiches and wraps and salads. Why can't more places be like this?
google avatar

Robert E.

Yelp
The Mason Jar is a few blocks from my office. With only 1 hour for lunch I was able to sit down order my ice tea with refills and my favorite salad, The Waldorf Chicken Salad. The salad was full of fruits and vegetables, with an awesome mixed-in salad dressing. The waitresses were cordial and attentive. I had a delicious lunch with plenty of time to get back to the office on time.
google avatar

Juliet F.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by "pub" in thinking you're getting typical low quality pub food. The food is outstanding! Delicious sandwiches, out of this world sweet potato fries and one of my favorites their steak quesadillas. This is a hidden gem in Oakland Park. I'm fortunate to live walking distance. It is now a staple in our weekly routine. My husband loves walking over, grabbing a seat at their small bar while we waits to pick up our food.
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
As a new resident of Oakland Park, this was the first local restaurant we tried and it was awesome! We had a smorgasbord of appetizers and all of them were better than the last. The jalapeño poppers and the wings really stood out; with the homemade ranch and blue cheese dressings. So good! We didn't come for dinner but the entire menu looked great Next time I come here I'll make sure to get some pictures! We were so excited that we forgot to take some. Service was quick and our waitress was so funny! This restaurant is small and they close pretty early, 8pm I think, so make sure you come early. You won't regret it!

Gus E.

Yelp
OMG My Mahi fish sandwich was fantastic ! A big portion with avacado lettuce and tomato... The best price as well $15.00 Get the sidewinder fries , yummy Will be back soon ....muchas gracias
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
As a big fan of the Mason Jar Cafe, checking out the pub has been on my want list for the longest time. I'm so pleased that the food is of the same high quality, while the atmosphere is so different - a relaxed pub environment compared to the adorable cafe I know so well. Which one I'll go to will be entirely down to mood at the time, and the company I'm with. Service was pleasant and efficient, it wasn't a super busy afternoon and we didn't have to wait long for anything. As a Brit, I always opt for fish and chips when I see it on the menu to see what their take is. Today was a very tasty combination of small mahi fillets with steak cut fries and a good helping of tartar sauce to compliment. At $15, I couldn't complain and it filled me up perfectly. Draft beer prices were very reasonable too. "Why did it take us so long to come here?" was the main topic of conversation between my girlfriend and myself, knowing we'll not let it go too long until a second visit.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
It's a pretty place, cozy and quiet and the food was delicious both times I dined there. Portions are good and the pricing is good.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Went for dinner with friends on their recommendation, and when we arrived, we wondered why they picked this location. Nothing was fancy, but as the night unfolded service was fantastic and the food was really delicious, big surprise. I had the chicken Parmesan, and my buddy had the pork chops and both were truly delicious. Wives had salmon and a second chicken dish and they said there's was delicious. For dessert we had Keylime pie, which is possibly the best pie I have ever had.. this place should have a line out the door every night because it's inexpensive and delicious with large portions. Was really exceptional
google avatar

Keith S.

Yelp
The service is really good. Everyone is very friendly and the food comes out quick. The menu is a bit disappointing. I was expecting a few southern or soul food options since the place is called Mason Jar. It's mostly bar food and sandwiches which are just ok. Also, the space is a bit cramped and there's not much room between guests.

Mike O.

Yelp
Had there chicken wings , was very overcooked and did not sit well with my stomach. Average food at best I would say

Alan J.

Yelp
So good! Small place , but menu was great. Could get crowded, limited number of tables. They change menu frequently.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Emily, our great server, added to our wonderful dining experience. The soup special of the day was white bean, and kale soup it was very flavorful, I also had a really good burger with blue cheese, sautéed onions, mushrooms, and bacon. Cousin Sue and I shared a very tasty Caesar salad. The table shared a slice of cream brûlée cheesecake (wow), chocolate cake, and key lime pie, T M J P is a great little restaurant, should give it a try...
google avatar

Gordy S.

Yelp
Having lunch with a local friend at this restaurant I ordered a Waldorf Salad...which it was not! The greens seemed undressed and waitress brought an oil based reddish dressing. Waldorf (Named after the Waldorf Hotel in NYC) has a white creamy ( Mayo?) dressing and sliced grapes. Here their's had neither!
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
This place has been in business for several years. We finally stopped in one weeknight to try. I assumed, due to its tenure, that it would be great. I really wanted this place to be great. The entire place, inside, looked like it needed a good scrubbing. It was dingy and the smell was something like a bathroom exhaust fan. It was not good. Equally unimpressive was the food. I had the Mahi sandwich and it was fine, the bread was very fresh but I am pretty sure it was a frozen fish patty. Nothing worth going back for. My husband and son had wings. They said they tasted like frozen wings that were just deep fried upon order. Not fresh. We did see a lot of the chicken fried chicken. It was HUGE. Looked and smelled good. So maybe this is just the kind of place that you have to know what to order? Our service was excellent--nothing to improve upon there. Unfortunately, the service alone is not enough to get us back in the doors when there are so many other places to go that can offer more. I know this is a local hub, but as a local, I just can't subscribe.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
We love The Mason Jar Pub! I think among our friends and my husband and me, we have grazed through the entire menu. It is hard to point out the tastiest items because this place does not disappoint on any level. The chicken fried chicken with two sides is off the chart yummy comfort food. We also go on most Friday nights for the fish fry special which is quite delicious. The staff is attentive and friendly, and we always look for Michele who is such a fun, bright light server who greatly contributes to a memorable dining experience.

Dan O.

Yelp
My Wife and I have been coming here 4-5 times a week! Great food...service and hospitality!
google avatar

Yelp
Best salmon ever!!! I get it with yellow rice and julienne veggies!! Highly recommended!!

Yelp
Always have a great meal, menu is not overwhelming but whatever they serve is good! All the staff makes you feel welcome and appreciated!

Yelp
I always liked the Mason Jar but I think I prefer their Mason Jar Pub even more. It has a good location along Oakland Park Boulevard offering both indoor and patio outdoor dining. Unfortunately, the outdoor patio faces right on Oakland Park which is akin to sitting next to a noisy exhaust fuming racetrack, and with Florida idiot drivers, a bit too dangerous for me. The patio has already been hit once with a lot of damage but, as no one was there, no injuries. The interior dining area is spotlessly clean with an eye pleasing décor and having a certain comfy ambience about it. My server was totally professional and polite. As a tip, read the board menu on the right back wall, I didn't and missed out on one of my favorites, soft shell crab. For my order I had a Heineken beer and their "Twin Pork Chops" with sun-dried cherry sauce, which sauce perfectly paired with the tasty pork. And I must say, those two pork chops were of thick cut, juicy, moist and some of the biggest I've ever been served in a restaurant. The rest of their menu is really good too, being most complete with 10 sandwiches, s ranging from short rib to mahi mahi, 7 entrée choices, varying appetizers, wraps, salads, wings and desserts including Crème Brule Cheesecake and Key Lime Pie.
google avatar

Jeff A.

Yelp
Good food...covered outdoor seating. Service was quick and friendly. I'd definitely go again. It looks like they also serve dinner.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
The food is very consistent and very wholesome. The staff have always been welcoming. It's a nice place to take a date or someone special.

Lori H.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and taste amazing. Service is always great . The Ambiance is pretty and nicely decorated.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Been here to eat many times the food is really good. But as I tried to walk in the door tonight, I was greeted by the older waitress who told me, Oh I'm sorry sir we are closed. Except I've been here many times at 8 pm. The time was 8:10, the patio was full and several tables inside. I asked when did the hours change and she said it's been that way since she's been there. So I look on Yelp and sure enough the hours say they don't close till 8:30. Not a good way to treat your customers. If you don't want to work your full shift maybe it's time retire? Or IF your hours DID change then update your profile please!

Yelp
Ok I'm slightly biased because I absolutely LOVE their sister restaurant Mason Jar Cafe. This is their more casual place which just opened during CV19 pandemic, and I love it too. The food is a bargain and I HIGHLY recommend this place. It's the same Southern-food-inspired menu, and the first place I tried sit-down service after restaurants were allowed to re-open. It's a good bit more casual than the parent cafe, both in ambience and food. The location has been a few different eateries in the past, and as a result even has a drive-through window. There's an outdoor deck but they're not using that just yet. That would be the "pub" part of the name... We had ridden our bikes for a long ride up from Miami on the day we went in, but far from being hesitant to serve two very sweaty bicyclists, the host said "come on inside into the air conditioning boys"...it's even better hospitality and service here than at the main restaurant and they're extremely nice at the original. The service was terrific once we sat down too. Friendly service fits with the classy vibe and terrific soul food-inspired menu. They have almost the same menu as lunchtime at the main restaurant. The prices are slightly less expensive than the MJ Cafe. My absolute favorites from the other restaurant are made here too, with the same terrific results. Waldorf salad has amazingly flavorful chicken salad, nuts, raisins, apples, oranges, etc and is out-of-this-world. Sweet potato fries and crispy Brussels sprouts with peanuts are stellar too. For a limited time, they're also giving a free order of 10 wings to each table.

Kathryn B.

Yelp
I drive down for Boca Raton regularly to meet friends for lunch here. The food is outstanding. Staff so friendly. Never feel rushed. Outside sitting in the nice weather. Cute decor and nice location.
google avatar

Iflysky J.

Yelp
This is a great little eatery in Oakland Park. I never knew it was there till recently. The staff is very friendly and good with recommendations. I had the country fried chicken, the portion was huge. Atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. Indoor and outdoor dining. Menu is too the point with a variety of options. I'll definitely be eating here again.

Vladimir S.

Yelp
Once again this place Never miss! Excellent customer service and quality food with very fast service. I come here once or twice a week! Can't get enough and the decor and Vibe for outside dining is amazing! Number #1 in Broward hands down

Yelp
New favorite lunch spot. Great wraps, sandwiches and salads. Sweet potato fries are excellent. They have awesome daily specials. I absolutely love the drive through for pick up! You should go!

Yelp
Cute hole Wall. Excellent food. Burgers huge. Fried .green tamatos great. Will return

Afonso B.

Yelp
I'm sorry but this is my second time that I try to eat at Mason Jar Pub and when I arriving 45 minutes before they close (9:00pm as it says here), they tell me that they are "closing earlier tonight". So if you guys want to go home earlier for some reason, you should update your hours on your profile. Don't make people drive 30 minutes to have the door closed on their faces.
google avatar

China N.

Yelp
The carnitas burritos are excellent!! The service is really good too even when it's really busy! I'll be back!!
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
If you love comfort food such as fried chicken in white gravy this is your place. What will took me about this place was size of the portions. Most of the main dishes like the chicken fried steak and the pork chops were presented with such generous portions a single dish really could make two meals. Based on some of the tables around me I believe many were taking the second portion "to go". While it was comfort food, it was done right. The chicken was crispy, not greasy and had a pleasant crunch. The Mason Jar offers some real vegetables beyond the fried and empty nutrient sides you often order (although they have those too) such as broccoli. There is outside seating, the only downside is that it is steps from Oakland Park Blvd which is a major thoroughfare so you will be eating with revved engines and gas exhaust. Severs were super nice which made tipping a pleasure.

Mark D.

Yelp
Great specials everyday Service was exceptional Went here 3 days in a row for lunch Iced tea is great and draft beers for my wife Really great wraps and salads
google avatar

Brian Z.

Yelp
First time visiting. Cute, relaxed atmosphere. Incredibly friendly staff. Good food, nice sized portions at a very reasonable prices.

Conrad L.

Yelp
this is a hidden gem the drive thru kinda makes you think of fast food- but this is far above that level FOOD-i've tried many items from the menu and all good. they also accommodate substitutions/changes SERVICE- very professional-above expectations (Especially Grace, who has a great capacity for remembering what folks frequently order) AMBIANCE- kinda basic. indoor seating as well as an outdoor covered patio (on oakland park) The space is intimate / functional This restaurant is one of my go-to places where I always leave happy that I went
google avatar

Yelp
Has to be the best take out restaurant in all of Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. They have a drive up window! Most delicious food!!
