The Mason's Arms makes tiny village Clanfield a destination - Review - Cotswolds - The Infatuation

"The Mason’s Arms is less pub and more a warren. One occupied by a wine collector rabbit with classy William Morris wallpaper and the ability to make a mean black velvet. This sprawl of higgeldy-piggeldy, interconnecting rooms is The Double Red Duke’s sister spot. And it keeps an eye on its younger, more unruly sibling from right across the road in Clanfield—a tiny, charming village that, come evening, is filled with mud-splattered Land Rovers and Porsches pulled up on grassy verges. Trend-seekers and those at the end of long shifts flock to The Mason’s Arms for comforting British pub classics that have had serious glow-ups. You should do the same. photo credit: The Mason’s Arms You can book where you want to sit in this mini-labyrinth. And here’s the cheat code: pint-drinkers retreat to The Snug, sinking into leather armchairs beside roaring fireplaces. Families celebrating birthdays book out the semi-private Card Room and in the Dining Room, groups split plates of fatty locally cured charcuterie and hunks of Blake’s bread in wooden booths. photo credit: The Mason's Arms photo credit: The Mason's Arms photo credit: The Mason's Arms Pause Unmute When it comes to the food, expect typical British pub dishes—a plate of chipolatas, ham, egg, and chips, a cheeseburger. But at The Mason’s Arms that means a dollop of mustardy mayo with your meaty sausages, smoky ham thick enough to wedge open doors, and a cheeseburger so buttery and juicy it requires a stack of napkins. It’s tasty enough for special occasions but won’t alienate the grumbling family member who thinks a pub “should still be a pub”. Food Rundown Salt Pig Charcuterie, Cornichons & Bread This meaty spread doesn’t involve any cooking, but it proves that The Mason’s Arms is great at sourcing locally. We appreciate that Salt Pig’s salami is garlicky and peppery, and the cured, spiced loin has plenty of sweet, buttery, fatty bits. Blake’s sourdough is a great choice too. The crust is crunchy, the bread springy and soft, and there’s a pleasant but not overwhelming sourdough tang. photo credit: The Mason's Arms Chipolatas Perfectly tasty, but there’s nothing particularly memorable about these chipolatas. You only get four as well, so if you’re rolling with a group you’ll end up awkwardly splitting sausages. And nobody wants that. photo credit: The Mason’s Arms Cheeseburger A burger that should come with a life raft and a towel. It’s so juicy. There are two smashpatties with crispy edges, a pile of sweet, jammy onions, and a mayo with a pleasant bit of heat to it. The bun manages to hold up until the last bite—a minor miracle. Ham, Egg, & Chips The ham, egg, and chips is a regularly occurring special and if it’s on, you should get it. It’s the thickest slab of ham we’ve ever been served and has a nice smoky sweetness. The chips are perfect—with a good crunch but light, fluffy centres. photo credit: The Mason’s Arms Half A Roast Chicken, Onions & Bacon A dish that proves when chicken has golden, crispy skin, moist meat, and chunky bacon lardons scattered over it, there’s really nothing better. This comes in a skillet and we’d recommend a side of chips for gravy-mopping purposes. photo credit: The Mason’s Arms" - Sinéad Cranna

Tucked away in a tiny town, Mason's Arms—established in 1610—is a perfect rainy day escape. We didn’t expect much from the food, but we were very pleasantly surprised. The pub retains its centuries-old character: old fireplaces, simple wooden furniture, and a worn stone floor that all come together to create a warm, authentic atmosphere. It feels like stepping back in time—in the best way. We ordered the ribeye steak and chicken, and both dishes were outstanding. Full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and served with a side of fresh greens. A solid 10/10. If you find yourself nearby, don’t miss it. Highly recommended.

We happened on this by chance after walking the Thames Path on a wet Monday. Our first choice was not serving food. However we received a warm welcome at the Mason’s Arms for lunch. The food was exceptional and the service excellent. We could not find any fault. Truly a lovely experience. All tastes including vegetarians are well catered for.

A great lunch. Thank you! Delicious starters of classic prawn cocktail and freshly made taramasalata. Then (between 5 of us) we ordered the steak with a yummy green sauce, the burger and the fish & chips with a side of al dente broccoli. A slight wait for the main course to arrive but the food was excellent - so worth waiting for! No room for puddings, too full!

Our first visit to the Mason’s Arms, but certainly not our last. Food was fantastic; with a smaller menu the food was out quickly and cooked beautifully. The lamb fritters and half chicken were absolutely gorgeous, and the ham egg and chips was a slow cooked pork chop more like a thick gammon on the bone, delicious. Desserts were a choice of two and the tarte tatin was especially tasty. Service couldn’t have been more attentive with Danny and the waiters looking after us brilliantly. Can’t wait for our next meal there, highly recommended.

Had a really nice meal here with the family and the staff were very friendly. It was my birthday and the staff kindly brought out a dessert with a candle. I was quite shocked to notice after we’d paid and left that they had added this to the bill - we never asked for this food so it’s a bit cheeky to throw it onto the bill in my view!

A great dining experience in a beautiful old pub. Service was top tier, drinks were great and food was outstanding. Three of us had baked cod and it was cooked perfectly. Probably only two less than perfect elements were that parking was tricky (they can't really do much about that but it's worth keeping in mind for anyone planning to visit) and dessert options were limited to just two different ice-cream sundaes. The one we had (sticky toffee) was lovely but a dessert choice that doesn't include ice cream as the main element might be nice.

The Double Red Duke is our favourite pub by a country mile, so we were naturally eager to visit The Mason’s Arms and couldn’t be more pleased that we did! Stunning food in a wonderfully traditional setting - standouts for us were the hispi cabbage and sticky toffee sundae. Staff were more than accommodating to us running late and our newborn baby, will definitely be back soon 😌
