Yelp
(Attended 11/30/17 TH @ 9:00pm): "Am I in" love with this place or what!?
It's been awhile since I last visited The Mayan Theatre in DTLA, a place I frequented during my college years for cheap nights of dancing, drinking, and music. On this fine evening, I was very excited to see one of my favorite bands, Stereophonics, since it too has been awhile since I last saw them in concert. Would this night of reaquaintance be a memorable one!?
PURCHASE
Tickets/Seats ($40.91): The base price was a steal at $30.50 but a horrendously high $10.41 in service fees. "Seating" was all General Admission/Standing, so I made a home in the pit as close to the stage (just off stage left) as comfortably as possible https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=hUCqJKA47R3zTqFMERUw8w&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Honestly, there were no bad areas in the house, and the only obstruction would be if someone tall stood in front of you. There were some seating areas available but were few and far between.
Concessions ($9.00): Because I was bored and apparently needed something in my hand even though I wasn't really thirsty, I saw enough of these Heineken 16 fl. oz. cans (which I liked) "roaming" around so I gave in. Heck...the other beer options were Modelo (also a favorite), Budweiser, Bud Light, and one other beer. There was a barely half-decent bar selection, too https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=znl1rcPdJ2twP8EMsKhGDA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
Merchandise ($30.00): I purchased a higher-priced generic band t-shirt. Sadly, they didn't have any tour-specific shirts for sale, but this will do since my other band shirt was so thin you saw right through it https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=QlMoLwWehaaxkvU-pWSKWA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
THE CONCERT
I've loved the Welsh band Stereophonics since their 1997 debut album "Word Gets Around". On this tour, they were supporting their latest release, "Scream Above The Sounds" in addition to the 20th anniversary of their debut album. With a balanced section of songs across all ten original releases, it was amazing how prolific they have been. A high-energy performance while the crowd sang to many of the lyrics showed the band how much they truly were loved here in L.A. I counted close to 25 songs during a nearly two-hour performance.
SERVICE
The online ticket purchase was seamless, the check-in line outside the venue went swiftly, there was no line when I bought my beer, and security was chill as heck. All was easy-peasy!
PARKING
(Varied; n/a this instance): I went Metro and took the Red Line from my hipsterhood to the 7th Street/Metro Station and walked about six blocks the rest of the way. Otherwise, nearby lots charged $10.00, or if you were lucky enough and nabbed any street parking since the time and meter limits had expired at this time.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
At roughly 1,500 capacity, the name of the theatre said it all as to what one could expect with its homage to the Mayan world as you were graced with the opulent façade of the building https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=qYvrkh4QqBuDhVI30rwYiQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw and the brightly-lit marquee and neon lights https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=s1Gj266bRURJgwkTLeJErw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Elements and motifs of this long-gone culture were used throughout the venue https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=FO2D5pU0tua6my_8kycXXg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. And since it was the holiday time, festive decorations were abound https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rx8FjQ_yte3EBSGDGnq0yw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. There were several bar locations to get your drink on with short lines, and an ATM in the lobby if you needed cash. From where I stood in the Main Floor/Pit area https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=HkYQ-vADB5RlJpW4y5UjBQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, the audio was wonderful as my ears buzzed during and long after the last chord was played. No natural lighting whatsoever, but the stage lighting was warm and vibrant. I didn't notice any monitors; however, background music played pre- and post-show.
ATTIRE
In general, it was a business casual affair with a buttoned-up shirt, jeans, and Doc Martens; the t-shirt, boardshorts and flip-flops stayed home.
OVERALL
The Mayan Theatre brought back some wonderful memories, and I've added another one with this concert still ringing in my ears. To L.A. transplants this "relic" from the 1920's may've seemed kitschy, but there was a long-standing history behind it which a born-and-raised Angeleno such as myself appreciated and defended. In any respect, the intimacy of this place should prove favorable to both patrons and performers. I found exceptionally good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total bill was around $80.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tips). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.5 STARS
